good evening. thanks for joining us. tonight, you could call it a baby sweepstakes. a controversial contest in las vegas. couples vying for the chance to win an expensive round of in vitro fertilization, or ivf. something often financially out of reach. which is why these couples are willing to go public with their very private struggles to have a baby. >> daddy found some more. >> reporter: for the johnsons these moments of happy family life almost didn't happen. now their days are packed with cartoons, toys, and the occasional temper tantrum. >> okay, we're going to go buckle in. >> reporter: but to raise their 2-year-old daughter mckenna, the child they always wanted, brian and ann had to travel a long road, overcoming seemingly impossible odds. >> i was all in. whatever we had to do to get to our family was just trying to figure out what's the best way to get to our family. >> reporter: like one in every

ten couples, they struggled with infertility, enduring years of disappointment and tragedy. >> it was hard. >> i don't know how we made it through. >> reporter: but then in 2013 a hail mary. they hear about the i believe competition. sher ivf, a fertility clinic in las vegas, offering a free round of in vitro fertilization to the winner. valued at $20,000. people like the johnsons post heartfelt videos pleading their case for why they should win. >> i'd love a chance. >> reporter: the controversial contest the brainchild of this man, dr. jeffrey sher. >> there's a self-serving objective obviously that was our objective as well, to make them aware of what we have to offer. over the years of doing so we've seen a lot of women have babies as a consequence. but what it's done, which is far more important, is drawn attention to the area. >> reporter: an estimated 7.5 million women struggle to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term. statistics show that ivf is

anything but a sure bet, with each costly round there's only between a 30% and 40% success rate in most cases. and as a woman ages her odds of having a baby decrease. >> about 30% to 40% of ivf is covered by insurance. which is a travesty because we shouldn't need contests. >> december 20th. changing. >> reporter: the competition along with ann and brian's journey to become parents chronicled in the new documentary "vegas baby." >> she's so broken. and it was a very raw moment. but yeah, i feel concerned for her. >> reporter: the director, amanda mckaley, and her husband were in the middle of their own struggle with infertility when she began filming. >> it's an absurd distillation of this bizarre world of reproductive medicine that i had found myself, and this is sort of this cockamamie health care slash reality tv solution. >> double quarter pounder with cheese meal. >> reporter: morgan spurlock, best known for his documentary "super size me" -- >> look at how big that thing

is. >> reporter: -- is the executive producer. >> this is one of those things that we don't talk about, that you kind of whisper about between friends but nobody kind of openly has conversations about it because we're ashamed. >> reporter: early on in their marriage the johnsons mortgaged their house to pay for a round of ivf. >> ivf costs 20,000 for the fresh cycle, and then each additional frozen cycle is an additional $5,000 to $6,000. >> reporter: they were thrilled when ann got pregnant with twins. but in her second trimester, tragedy. >> almost 20 weeks my water bro broke. we rushed to the hospital, and they tried to stop my contractions but they couldn't. so i ended up delivering my son. >> reporter: he died shortly after birth. doctors hoped ann could continue the pregnancy with the other twin and put her on bed rest. >> almost a month later my water broke again early in the

morning. and i ended up delivering her. she passed away a couple hours after she was born. so at that time we could -- they wouldn't do any measures to save her. >> reporter: the loss of the twins almost destroyed ann and brian's marriage. >> there's a part of me inside of me that feels like it would be best for us just to start over, be in a different relationship with should not someone sxels have your family with someone else. >> there are plenty of adoption and foster care advocates out there who would say why not adopt, why not foster? >> the way people often say it is why don't you just adopt? what's wrong with you? why don't you just adopt? which is very hurtful in a sense because it's dismissive of what you're going through and implies that somehow adoption is easy. >> reporter: there's a perception in hollywood that anyone can have a baby at any age. but celebrities like brooke shields, courteney cox, and celine dion have all openedly shared their family struggles with infertility and ivf.

in 2015 celebrities chrissy teeingen and tyra banks famously went public with their struggles to have a child on the "fab life." >> we've seen fertility doctors. >> why don't you have kids? why don't you have kids? you don't know. you don't know what i'm going through. >> reporter: after years of trying to have a family ann and brian's house was in foreclosure. >> it really is now or never for us. our house is in the foreclosure process. we still technically own it, but not for much longer. >> reporter: there was no more money for any more rounds of ivf. >> do we have a system in which only rich people can write the check and have ivf? >> yeah. i think we live in this world right now between have and have not all the time. >> dr. sher's contest was the last chance. >> you guys are the winners. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: and they hilt the jackpot. but others weren't so lucky. >> the wait is over. >> i hear voices, you know, from family and stuff.

god has a plan. and i could only say i certainly hope so. >> ladies and gentlemen, welcome to las vegas. >> reporter: ann and brian travel to las vegas and undergo ivf with dr. sher. >> i loaded a single beautiful-looking embryo for ann johnson. are you ann johnson, ma'am? >> yes. >> that spark there, that's a bubble of fluid which contains the embryo. you can't see the embryo. it's only the size of a grain of sand. >> hello. >> hi. >> good news. >> i can tell by your face. you gave it away. >> i gave it away. great result here for you. i'm not lying. here it is. >> reporter: after a heartbreaking early miscarria miscarriage -- >> the measurement of the fetus unfortunately has not changed. i don't see a heartbeat. >> reporter: -- dr. sher does one more embryo transfer. this time a heartbeat. >> do you see that, honey? >> oh, my gosh. i do. i do. >> reporter: mckenna lutzia

johnson was born by c section at 23 weeks. barely viable. >> weighed one pound three ounces. >> she was in the nicu for probably around 146 days. >> this is mckenna's first diaper when she was born. this is her diaper now. so it's like how far she's come. >> reporter: the sher institute no longer holds a contest, but the johnsons' daughter is a living legacy. a miracle baby in every sense. now 2 years old. >> i would do everything all over again to get to her. she is my world. she's -- she's so worth everything. >> "vegas baby" is streaming on netflix. up next, the plus-size model who fought back against what she called body shaming, filming the dramatic confrontation with her

the size of my body. >> yeah. >> reporter: listen in as plus-size model natalie hage confronts the man she says body-shamed her on a recent flight. >> my body is loss none of your business. so you have no idea what i can or can't do with it. >> fair enough. >> reporter: the ordeal start when'd natalie boarded an american airlines plane headed from dallas to los angeles. >> i sat down, started getting, you know -- i put my stuff away. i noticed immediately that the man to my left at the window was huffing and sighing incredibly loud. >> reporter: that's when natalie says the man took out his cell phone and started sending disparaging text messages. >> i'm already a very nervous flyer. so i'm overly like observant of what's happening around me. so i look over and he's got his phone plain as day, and without having to like look hard at all i see he's talking about me. >> reporter: allegedly texting jokes about her weight. >> the person he talked to said it looks -- hopefully she hasn't had any mexican food. and then he says, well, it looks like she's eaten a whole

mexican. >> reporter: hage started snapping images of the texts and sharing them with her over 100,000 social media followers. three hours later on the runway at l.a.x. she worked up the courage to confront the man, recording the whole thing. >> i couldn't help but notice that before we took off you were sending really horrible text messages about me to somebody. >> i wasn't. >> i have photos. yes, you were. i saw the whole thing. >> i apologize. i was drinking and i apologize. >> yeah, just -- you have no idea who you hurt with those kind of things. >> i apologize. you got me 37 and i was drinking and i apologize. >> reporter: but that apology quickly turns accusatory. >> you probably shouldn't be sitting in an exit row seat. when they ask you are you willing and capable to assist people in getting off the airplane in an emergency do you honestly think that you are? >> wait a minute, the drunk man is telling me that i'm not capable of helping people? okay. >> reporter: natalie says while she was open about recording the conversation she purposely did not film the man's face. >> i didn't want to start any kind of like shame circle.

i just did not want this to be about bashing this guy's looks, anything like that. >> don't ever treat somebody like that again. >> you're right. >> you don't know anything about me. >> you're absolutely right. >> reporter: the video went viral, with over 1.6 million views, and hage writes on instagram, "this is a fat person's daily reality and not just on a plane." hage certainly isn't alone. ♪ most recently "work" singer rihanna drew fire after these images snapped in new york appeared to show the star's weight gain. a writer for barstool sports posted the blog headline "is rihanna going to make being fat the new trend?" the publication later apologized and took down the blog. ♪ what doesn't kill you makes you stronger ♪ and "stronger" singer and "american idol" winner kelly clarkson was very publicly body shamed in 2015. >> it is the fabulous kelly clarkson. ♪ this is my heartbeat song ♪ and i'm gonna play it after the birth of her daughter clarkson debuted her single

heartbeat song on the uk show "graham norton live." british tv personality katie hopkins tweeted in response "what happened to kelly clarkson? did she eat all of her backing singer?" hopkins later doubled down on her comments on "entertainment tonight." >> she needs to get out there with her stroller and do some pushing and get some of that weight off. >> reporter: clarkson responded, saying to "heat" magazine, "i'm awesome. it doesn't bother me." >> i feel like i'm on a speedboat. >> reporter: and last year comedian amy schumer spoke candidly to "glamour" about being criticized about her weight, saying i have a belly, i have cellulite and i still deserve love. recently shonda rhimes, the tv titan behind mega hits like "scandal" and "grey's anatomy" -- >> every day is like this. every day there's a crisis. >> reporter: has said she's been treated differently since shedding 150 pounds, writing in her shondaland newsletter, "these days i feel like a chunky spy in a thinner world. strangers tell fat jokes in front of me, jokes not meant for me but completely for the woman i used to be 150 pounds ago.
