making news in america this morning, happening now, violent protests breaking out at the high-stakes international summit in germany. president trump and russia's vladimir putin now just hours from a face-to-face meeting. we're live in hamburg, germany, with the latest. new protests taking place at senate offices from coast to coast. demonstrators being arrested while making their case for keeping obamacare. details live from washington. breaking overnight a sfrietenning flight with hundreds on board forced down when a passenger allegedly attacks the flight attendants. that man, now under arrest. and look out, dangerous distraction blowing onto the road at the tour de france.

a good friday morning to you. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm nick watt in for kendis gibson. that crucial meeting for president trump prumg to sit down with vladimir putin. >> the two leaders set to meet behind closed doors at the g20 summit in germany for 30 minutes. outside protesters are gathering again after a day of violent clashes with police. officers used water cannons a short time ago to try to clear a group of protesters. abc's karen travers has the latest from hamburg. karen, what are you seeing? >> reporter: good morning, diane and nick. president trump will sit down with nearly a dozen world leaders at the g20 summit but his meeting in just a couple of hours with russian president vladimir putin, his most critical diplomatic test, and, nick and diane, the white house strategy seem tos downplay expectations. fiery scenes overnight as thousands of protesters clash with german police who unleashed powerful water cannons and pepper spray. one banner summing up the

atmosphere. g20, welcome 2 hell. authorities were prepared expecting around 100,000 demonstrators on the streets. officials say the crowd size thursday was only about 8,000 and president trump and russian president vladimir putin in just a few hours sitting down for their first face-to-face meeting. tensions between the u.s. and russia, the highest since the end of the cold war. president trump is expected to push putin on russia's involvement in ukraine and syria. but one topic he will not likely raise, russia's meddling in last year's presidential election. the president was asked about that during his visit to poland yesterday. >> i think it could very well have been russia but i think it could well have been other country. >> do we see president trump who wants to be loved even by vladimir putin or do you see the president trump who wants to be seen as a tough negotiator? >> reporter: president trump has already had his first meeting with his host german chancellor angela merkel. the two shaking hands, something they didn't do during their first meeting in the oval office

a few months ago. and, diane and nick, a similar scene we'll see when reporters are brought in for the beginning of his meeting with president putin. no word from the white house whether they'll make remarks but, nick, diane, you can bet there will be a lot of questions shouted at them. >> sounds like a pretty small group allowed in that room. i'm wondering how the president is preparing for all of this. >> reporter: just the two world leaders will be in that meeting. the secretary of state, the russian foreign minister and two translators, diane. a very small group, just six people in that room. the president is not known for being a meticulous planning. president putin is known for being a meticulous planner and a white house official tells us the president is going into this not poring over briefing books or materials to bring to the table. they say he's more comfortable just going in and being himself. but, diane, you'll remember back in may when the president sat down with the russian foreign minister and the russian ambassador to the united states,

later we found out he went off script bragging about firing james comey and he also talked about highly sensitive information, intelligence that was given to the u.s. by the israelis. diane and nick, it certainly seems as if there wasn't a lesson learned from that by letting the president go into a meeting with senior russian officials and winging it. >> abc's karen travers in hamburg, thanks very much. and president trump also addressed the crisis with north korea promising the u.s. will confront that threat, quote, very seriously. one extreme option would be a preemptive military strike but defense secretary james mattis says that could lead to a catastrophic war making it the least likely solution. instead he says the trump administration's priority is to resolve the crisis using less severe means. >> i do not believe this capability in itself brings us closer to war because we are leading with diplomatic and

economic efforts. >> south korea's president prefers diplomacy with all issues on the table including north korea's nuclear program. back at home republican senators can't seem to avoid the anger created by their health care bill. >> constituents are making every effort to find those lawmakers who opted not to schedule a town hall meeting on the measure. abc's emily rau joins us with more from washington. emily, apparently they didn't want to discuss this but that's not really working for them. >> reporter: right, exactly, diane and nick. plenty of senate republicans are getting an earful from voters who are demanding that they oppose the repealing and replacing the affordable care act. at the office of arizona republican jeff flake, protesters chanting "where's jeff flake. several of them arrested, two charged with making threats and in austin, texas, there were arrests outside the office of senator john cornyn considered a

key vote and a group of protesters made it to the door of senator tom cotton's office. some taking cotton to tank for the bill's projected cuts to the veterans administration pointing out the senator himself is a vet and protesters in senator cory gardner's office in denver did get to speak to him by phone. >> there are many people who agree with you. on the points you made. there are many who don't agree with you on the points you made but i appreciate your willingness to come to the office and share those viewpoints. >> senators will get back to work debating the bill next week. as of now there are ten senators who say they cannot support the current republican bill. nick, diane. >> that's abc's emily rau for us from washington. thanks. congressman steve scalise remains in intensive care after undergoing surgery for an infection. scalise has been hospitalized since he was shot on a baseball field last month by a man targeting republican lawmakers. doctors say the procedure went

very well. scalise is still listed in serious condition. and the relationship rules for the trump administration's partial travel ban will stay in place. the ban affecting citizens of six mostly muslim nations exempts travelers with close relatives in the u.s. overnight a federal judge denied a motion asking to clarify bona fide relationships, hawaii's attorney general wants those with grandparent, aunts and uncles living here to be except. the government's ethics director is resigning. walter shaub repeatedly challenged the administration. the ethics program needs to be stronger, he says. the white house said a successor will be nominated soon. now for a look at your weather. these funnel clouds in central ohio are the beginning of some

severe storms moving into the ohio valley and eastern great lakes today. in the northeast there will be heavy rain for the morning commute from new york to philadelphia. some of the rain could be very heavy and urban areas could even see flash flooding. high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity are helping fuel 34 large wildfires in 11 western states. this one is in washington and burned thousands of acres. one said it spread with a vengeance. still ahead a frightening incident aboard a delta flightover night. some of the nuclear plants are the target of hackers. what's being done to protect them? the big sale going on at

you are looking at live pictures from hamburg, germany, where another day of protests is under way following violent clashes with police and president trump is also there at the g20 summit just hours away from stepping into his big meeting with russian president vladimir putin. >> breaking overnight a flight from seattle to beijing had to turn back because of a problem with a passenger. a 23-year-old florida man allegedly assaulted a flight attendant about 45 minutes after takeoff. other passengers restrained that man until the flight landed and he was arrested. the flight attendant and another passenger were injured and taken to the hospital. now, flight is now on its way to beijing. seven hours behind schedule. and the latest derailment in new york city's penn station is not only affecting trains in and out of new york city overnight but slowing or stopping service for amtrak's entire northeast corridor. many of the problems are a

result of overdue maintenance at the station which is owned by amtrak. and a major warning from the intelligence community about a hack into the nation's power systems. homeland security and the fbi say hackers have targeted nuclear and other facilities since may. some officials suspect the hack may have had origins in russia but authorities are still working to determine the motive and the source. operations at the facilities were not compromised. and bill cosby has a new trial date. the retrial on sexual assault charges is scheduled for november 6th. jurors were unable to reach a verdict in the first trial. the same judge is presiding over the second trial. well, if you paid $5 to the faa to register your drone you may be eligible for a refund. the u.s. court of appeals says requiring registration violates federal law. >> the faa is not allowed to make rules regarding model aircraft. the agency must also delete any data you provided. all right, when we come back

american airlines 767. as passengers tried to evacuate some were blown around by the exhaust of the plane's only working engine. now, everyone survived but the confusion could bring some changes. >> we'll learn something about how to evacuate airplanes better. we'll learn about emergency procedures on airplanes so there's always good lessons to be learned. >> you can see the video the second slide nearly blowing away. the ntsb said it took 90 seconds for the second engine to be shut off. 20 people were hurt. now, the pilots did follow proper procedures here. speaking of proper procedures, organizers of the largest youth soccer league in south carolina are cracking down on sideline shenanigans of parents who take cheering and jeering to extreme and sometimes violent levels. >> well, they're now requiring those spectators including parents to be quiet as their kids play. abc's t.j. holmes has the details. >> reporter: a youth soccer league is telling parents to

tweeting about the meeting. let's check back in with karen travers live for us from hamburg, germany. what is the president saying? >> reporter: good morning, diane. the president is tweeting he's looking forward to all his meetings with world leaders including that one with vladimir putin and as he says in his tweet, much to discuss. and here's what we know about what he's bringing to the table the president is prepared to talk about ukraine and syria and might talk about the broader issue of russia's cyberactivity, but, diane and nick, it's not clear if he's going to get specifically into russia's election interference last year. that's something that might not go over well back home in washington. lawmakers from both parties are urging the president to get tough on russia. senate democrats actually told him yesterday if he doesn't bring up that election interference it would be a severe dereliction of duty. >> and, karen, i assume out on the streets the police are gearing up for new protests? >> reporter: you can probably hear the helicopters hovering

over the city, nick, as the police and law enforcement officials get ready for another day of what could be pretty sizable protests, but, nick, i should say the police here were very prepared for ting crowds o about 100,000 demonstrate attorneys take to the streets. yesterday they said it was only about 8,000 and for the most part the vast majority were peaceful. some people were here, of course, to cause trouble but the police will be ready for that again today and i should also note that this is a protest that we see at all of these types of summits, anti-globalism, an tall capitalism not necessarily directed at president trump. >> i know many topics to discuss, only a few people in the room but they're expected to cover syria, ukraine, may even touch okorea and, of course, the big question as you mentioned whether or not election meddling will be discussed. we'll have to wait and see and so appreciate you covering it for us live. karen travers from hamburg, germany. thanks, karen. >> and that is what's making news in america this morning.
