5:06 pm
seen close to 300 lightning strikes and they are intention if iing as they move in. the national weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of bucks montgomery and northeast philadelphia and the northwest corner of burlington county until 5:30 tonight because some of these storms have the potential for damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and the possibility of some small hail. we are zoomed in on this cluster. this sparked the warning right over langhorne and essentially riding east along i-276 moving at 30 miles per hour. willow grove and crossing 611 and moving quickly with heavy rain, this is complicating the evening commute and we have a severe thunderstorm warning for western berks county and as we zoom in this has died off. 57 lightning strikes in this view alone north of wolmersdorf it's weakening to it's east and
5:07 pm
moving at 30 miles per hour. we have the possibility of more severe thunderstorms until 9:00, most of the possibility of a storms will be kind of like the northern two-thirds of our viewing area and extreme southern new jersey and delaware you are not in the severe thunderstorm watch and tomorrow it could get stormy as the front sinks to the south and we'll talk more about that and relief from the heat but not for long. we'll check back in later. thank you. >> the heat and humidity were inescapable. especially if you have to spend extended time outside. jeanette reyes spoke with folks around center city to stay cool. the humidity and heat got off to a start today and temperatures climbed from bad to worse. >> right now it's a little muggy of course, humid, i guess you could say all the way out and cloudy. >> and right now not too bad but it's going to get hot.
5:08 pm
the usual important advice on hydration was dished out by everyone at the olney transportation sentner logan. >> right now comfortable but getting extremely hot today. so lets try to drink a lot of water and fluids and make sure you stay on the air. >> landscaper kevin brown was under the scorching sun in logan scare. >> we have another job to do to. >> a man was guying out food and water to the homeless and parents found a way to keep the kids busy and cooled off. >> when you think of it being boiling hot it's the city. and then of course you have the sprinklers over there she can run back and forth to and keep me busy running after her. >> and the gentlemen is doing something wonderful and and important and checking on the developnerable and elderly and
5:09 pm
young. jeanette reyes, channel 6 "action news." >> refreshing. time for a check of the "action news" traffic report. >> matt pellman is back and has the latest in the traffic center. matt, how are you? >> good, we have backups second accident in the afternoon in this spot causing the northbound delays, it's here northbound between cotman and academy an ambulance and fire crews are on the scene and the right lane is out of commission as a result of this accident giving us speeds in the 30s northbound in the great northeast. a crash on the schuylkill eastbound by the blue route cleared and still slowing as you go eastbound from 202 to gladwyne. now a crash on the pennsylvania turnpike, the westbound direction just beyond bensalem where the left lane is blocked and slowing off route 1, and off the turnpike in fort washington it's wet and heavy showers when through 309 at the turnpike and nearby a crash along escape back
5:10 pm
pike along joshua road and slowing with speeds of 11 miles per hour. and collegeville a crash at specs drive-in approaching ridge pike, single digit speeds as you pass it's area. a crash along doe run at buck run. >> thank you. we got word that there is a tornado warning in the area. and go to cecily for the latest. >> we got it in now, a tornado warning for berks county. until 5:30, we have it now. this is a the same cell that did spark the severe thunderstorm warning earlier and intensifying. if we look at this, you see if you live in the reading area if you live in berks county what you want to do is seek shelter immediately. when we have a tornado warninging you want to get as many layers between you and the
5:11 pm
outside of your house, if you have a basements get into the basement. or an interior bathroom is a good idea and as many layers from you and the outside. the biggest problem with tornado warnings is debris that could be picked up with a potential for tornadoes or very strong wins. we have stormtracker 6 live double scan live and i'm show you this complex of storms, we have 82 lightning strikes in the last 15 minutes and as this continues it generally pushes to the east-southeast and moving quickly. we have been seeing storms moving at 30 miles per hour, and i think if we can put in -- there we go. this is the area that we are looking at. reading and boyer town just to the west of pottstown. that tornado is posted until 5:30. again seek shelter immediately this system is moving quickly and we are looking at the potential for wind gusts up to
5:12 pm
about 70 miles per hour. we can be look agent vicious straight line winds. we flipped over our radar to relative velocity. it shows the direct of the winds, when you have the green polyg polygon, that is the wind toward the radar site and the red is away. and this is called gate to gate sheer. the wind is going in one direction and another one and then that is what can be kind of flipping up a quick tornado. so right now it's moving to the east very quickly, mount pleasant, lees port, if you live there seek shelter immediately. if you have friend as long route 61 and temple and tuckerton. very bright with the bright green that is the gate to gate shear and that shows a spin if the atmosphere and that is
5:13 pm
triggering the tornadoes. thank you chris. we have new hill road, that is where the potential tornado is passing through, and fairview drive in the track. and also along route 61 if you know people that may be traveling up here, you want to give them a call. it's just to the north of blue marsh. lets see if we cylinders with this? >> the tornado warninging moving east at 30 miles per hour and we have been seeing this potential gate to gate shear again the potential for a spin if the atmosphere and go back to regular storm tracker and go ahead and try to see if we can track that storm. i'm putting it in here. sorry. this is live. we are working on the fly here
5:14 pm
lets go to storm tracker, tornado warning until 5:30, this is pretty large section of berks county. reading, boyer town just to the east of wolmersdorf, stormtracker 6 live double scan shows the storm as we are tracking it. 79 lightning strikes the past 15 minutes, why don't we track the cell, what you look at with the radar for the potential for tornadoes you want to look for a hook echo. when you get damaging straight line winds it's a bow echo. when we have the potential for tornado you see right here, there is a little bit of a hook developing so what this means the rain is wrapping around the center of the storm and you get the lift and updraft and that doesn't have the rain and we see the hook. these are the communities in the path of this potential tornado. river view park, berkeley tuckerton and temple at 5:19 and
5:15 pm
crossing 30 miles per hour crossing route 61 and why don't we go ahead and advance that a little bit more as we look at the potential for a tornado. we see severe thunderstorms with winds up to 70 miles per hour and hail as well. that tornado warning is in effect for berks county until 5:30 tonight. i don't know if we have live pictures? >> not now. tell people on social media. in this area. >> get inside shelter of course. >> if you see anything once the storm passes you can get out there and grab some photos, if you are hearing anything or seeing anything. hit us up on the main action "action news" page and personal pages as well. the warning continues until 5:30, it's in the heart here of berks county near reading and west of boyer town and it borders parts of chester county and montgomery county. as we look at the latest radar,
5:16 pm
where cecily was mentioning that hook was, is just to the east of blue marsh and south of tuckerton and temple. the hook happens where you don't have the heaviest rain or the most lightning all of that is to the the north of where the possible twist is in the southern areas, this is the track moving to the east-southeast at 30 miles per hour in berks county. the latest towns and times, river view park at 5:18 and wyomissing and west reading as well at 5:22 and if there was indication of spin if the storm you would see the cylinder on the radar, that doesn't mean it's not there, but we don't see the circulation that is a good sign. in berks county in reading in any of these towns or live near
5:17 pm
one of these towns, what you want to do is get into the lowest level of your home an void the windows and if are you in a high rise, people ask we that. get on the first level of that high rise away from the windows, best place interior hall or bathroom without windows or a basements, the best place to be. until 5:30 p.m. seek shelter in and around reading and north of downtown reading and boyer town the far eastern part of this storm and here is the latest radar, you see this almost upside down u here that is where the wins come in and funnel with the heaviest storm to the north. the winds wrap in this with storm and you start to see the relative velocity. and if we can zoom in a tiny bit
5:18 pm
and put the velocity. you want to see the gate to gate shear. take a look we are not seeing the green. >> higher up, north -- right there. it's up here. okay i'm looking down at reading here. mount pleasant you see the gate to gate shear. the dark reds and greens going into different directions. the red is going away from the radar and that creates it's spin. if you are near mount pleasant this is where the dangerous part of the storm is, you start to see the greens and reds coming together. almost looks like legos here at home this is what we look at in the meteorology world. far better than the actual radar itself. taking the winds outs of the
5:19 pm
storm where it's moving and only sees it's wind in the storm. this is where we are watching north of blue marsh and mount pleasant and down the pike a bit here. tuckerton and tem people getting a tremendous amount of lightning, 71 lightning strikes in the last 15 minutes just in this vantage point alone. you hear a constant roar of thunder and constant flashes of lightning. many people say if you get a torn on the ground you get the resemble of a freight train but it could be hard to hear that because of of the constant thunder and lightning. here is reading and blue marsh where we see the circulation and moving into downtown read and north reading at the present time south of tuckerton. you see the purples and reds and heaviest rain. river road take shelter here and along 222, getting into it's
5:20 pm
rush hour people are leaving work. if you are at home and someone is about to leave work, you may want to give them a quick call and stay put if they are in this region. 5:30 is when the warning is until. high park 5:23 and reading 5:25, and a five minute warning into downtown reading here and the storm packing quite a punch. cecily over there at the big board with more on 3-d. >> i'm look agent more information and we are focusing on berks coins but wind damage reports in chester and west brandywine township at 291 lafayette road. we are on 3-d storm tracker and showing you the tornado warning in effect for a large section of berks coins until 5:30 tonight this is the complex of storms we are tracking as we head towards
5:21 pm
reading. it's just to the north and west right now, moving very quickly and this is all associated with the cold front that is putting an end to the heat wave. we have such high heat right now. high dew point this is fueling the storm. we are close upright now on this particular cell on 3-d and you can see reading and the roads affected. people in this area really want to seek shelter immediately. west windsor street north 16th and mot can street and brennan street. what we are looking athat is why the national weather put up
5:22 pm
the warning at 5:30 tonight. a tornado warninging in effect for bergs county and we typically see some short duration tornadoes and they are usually low on the enhanced scale, ef 0 or ef 1 but they can do a lot of damage. you can get darthing straight line winds and we have seen that in chester county already. tracking now 5:21 now it's in ben horn. and college heights and ridge wood and mount penn by 5:32, this is the most dangerous part of a storm. just to the north of the center of reading. downtown reading right now and this is where we see the potential for the wrapping winds also our indications are there could be quite a bit of hail not in the senter of the storm but east of the storm.
5:23 pm
we see the purple that is where we see the hail: lighten up and zoom out to label roads. the severe thunderstorm warning that was earlier this evening, in effect until 5:30 it was actually upgraded to a tornado warning, this means that the radar is indicating that there is a potential for damaging winds that could cause a torn. we don't have reports from eyewitnesss of any funnel clouds but the classic radar signature of that hook that indicates the potential for tornadoes, lightning strikes 38 and heading towards hampton boulevard and north 11th street as it races to the east and is again for most of berks county be as we go back to the graphic. this is the area if you live in this area you need to seek shelter immediately and now shifted just to the north and east of reading and includes
5:24 pm
boyer town and includes just west of pottstown. if you live in pottstown it doesn't look like you get the tornado but likely damaging winds. if you live within that polygon you want to go ahead and turn up your tv and take your device and go to the basements if you can and if you don't have a basement go to an interior room or closet. something away from windows, we get the rotating winds, the big evidence problem is the debris that it can toss your way. you want to get inside if you know of anyone heading towards the reading area and tell them to wait out the storm as it pushes to the east and it's definitely a dangerous storm. tornado safety. nice to talk about this every now and then because we don't see a lot of tornadoes. avoid windows and go to the lowest floor in your house if you don't have a basements
5:25 pm
interior hall or bathroom put as many layers between you and the outside of the house as possible. this cell is triggered by the thunderstorms that are coming from a cold front and that will end our heat wave and as we continue to move on show you the storm we do have some radar echos in allentown can we put the 3 in motion and show you how we are looking at the storms earlier. everything was farther unto the north and as that cold front gets closer it's beginning to sink and we are actually seeing -- we see all the lightning strikes. 150 lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes that is why the tornado warning is posted and a severe thunderstorm warning until 9:00. you'll notice areas across south jersey and delaware they are not under the severe thunderstorm watch because the front is to
5:26 pm
the north but what happens tomorrow the fronts continues to sink down to the south and that will also put an end to the heat wave and this is the heat wave so far. 91 degrees tuesday and wednesday and today 94 degrees, all at tense right now on berks county frmg what i want to do is pull up our 3-d. chris lets get this out of this mode and see if we can flatten it out to see the radar echos and see if we can see any of the cylinders, what our radar can do in addition to seeing it's signature hook echo we can see a spin in the atmosphere withc cylind cylinders. we are not picking this up and that is it good news. the yellow circle indicates rotation in the atmosphere and a red circle indicates rotation down to the surface, we are not
5:27 pm
picking this up and could be say sign that the cell is weakening and we are seeing a lot of lightning strikes. actually chris, there we go. this is the cell we are looking at north of reading right now and i am talking about other areas of wind damage, this is another cell that is moving through chester county right now philadelphia, we are just getting rain and doylestown heavy rain and thunderstorms as well. 105 lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes and that is the cluster that we are watching moving through berks county. you see we have it tilted but this is where the most intense part of the storm is north of reading and moving into eastern berks county and moving east at 30 miles per hour. we do anti reports of eyewitnesss and checking social media accounts if you can safely take pictures send them to us.
5:28 pm
are you looking at that? we got an extension. it's now extended out of berks county until 5:30 but extended farther. here is where it was in berks county and this was until 5:30, now it's extended to 6:15, for another 45 minutes extending it now into northern chester county and montgomery county and royersford and pottstown, the storm is still in berks county if you are anywhere south of green lane near royersford and 422 and pottstown you want to start to seek shelter get into that place right now. also, bring your phone so you have an app and see the radar and watch us live on your phone. then we can warn you when you can get away from that interior room or go back to safety of the upstairs of the home and go about your day but athis point
5:29 pm
get into place in this area in montgomery county and chester county and berks county until 6:15 or until you can watch us on your phone, to let you know when the storm passes. i want to show you the pagoda in reading a live camera at the pagoda, brightening to the west and passing downtown reading, if you look on the other side it's dark here as the storm continues to push to the east and south of reading right now. i want to go to the radar and chris if we can widen out and see where we are here. there is reading as it is now just to the east of reading we confirm that on the live camera it's clear of the actual heart of that storm that could be producing the twist or tornado. it's funneled here in the worst part of the storm and the dangerous lightning and rain
5:30 pm
north of the possible circulation and with we are not picking up the cylinder but the echo has it's classic look. it continues to move east five points here beavers mill at 5:36 down the road here yellow shs house as well as earlville. in the path of this possible tornado and olney line at 5:38. lets put on the velocity. storm relative velocity. take away the radar mode it shows the heavy rain but take a look at the winds. you almost have to dissect this florida storm. the boxes i'll explain, we are looking inside of the storm with stormtracker 6 live double scan because we have the dual pole that mean a vertical scan and
5:31 pm
horizontal scan, we can see in the storm not only taking away the winds but it's winds within the storm. you have the red boxes, the deeper reds our radar is far to the east of this in southern parts of bucks county and winds are reds moving away from the radar and the green is winds moving toward the radar and winds moving in different directions calling them gate to gate sheer and that creates a tumble that wind flow that wraps around one another and towards five points but yellow house get a heads up. keep this particular image on here but widen out more a warning farther down the the line where this storm is moving. there is boyer town and man tony just to the north of the circulation so take shelter. boyerstown we want to watch as well. and birdsboro take shelter at
5:32 pm
this time. browns mills 5:33 and talking about yellow house in the direct path of this circulation at 5:36 and spangsville and weaver town at 5:36. this is where we see the wrapping so to speak in this storm relative velocity mode. what you want to do, this we can't tell you enough. we want to tell you over and over again. avoid the windows, i know that partses of berks county and downtown residenting there are a lot of high rises get in the lowest level. condominium or business get to the lowest level of that particular building interior hall or bathroom away from the windows, if we look inside of the home not good near the exterior walls or window, a closet or bathroom that doesn't have the windows, most of the injuries is debris that flies into people's homes smashing
5:33 pm
it's windows that is something we continue to follow. here is 3-d. here is stormtracker 6 live double scan. chris sowers is manning the radars. give us the advantage of 3-d, many times there is a lot of circulation you get the cylinder that comes out of the base of the storm. that we are not seeing is with this storm, it's amount of lightning that continues to be pulled out of the storm that is a dangerous element to the storm even away from a possible tornado is the amount of lightning, this particular one extremely dangerous with that tornado warning. southern parts of berks county because of the storm with the possible circulation continues to wrap into southern parts of berks county but ins now extends
5:34 pm
into points county northern chester county and along 422 between pottstown and royersford. the national weather service started it in berks county near wolmersdorf and continues it here and very rarely in our area, because tornadoes can spin up so quickly, and dissipate quickly. very rarely do you see them extended beyond the original tornado warninging, this is something they are definitely watching here. we see this class imhook echo and this is why the national weather service posted the warning and extends it. this is the most dangerous part of the storm here heading over
5:35 pm
boyerstown pike and pine land and meeting house road and what you see when you see the classic hook it's it's winds that are wrapping around the updraft of a thunderstorm. and really the northeast quadrant is the most intense as far as the winds, and the rain and the potential for hail and we are seeing that north. that is moving right now east-southeast at 30 miles per hour. and it's moving quickly and pine land road now crossing, it will be heading towards earlville and chris why don't we widen out and do a storm track on this to show you the communities this is heading towards. this is radar indicated so the national weather service is monitoring this particular cell and we have another severe thunderstorm warning but this one in particular we see the signature hook echo and that indicates the potential for tornadic activity. you can see we are drawing that
5:36 pm
line east-southeast at 30 miles per hour. that is the most intense part of the storm and will be passing through earlville at 5:43, threw yellow house at 5:40 and wood chopper town at 5:45 and amitiville at 5:45. and is the storm that has the potential for tornic ac tists moving east quickly and will be passing likely north of the airport as well up there. we do have that tornado warninging in effect, they extended it, it was first posted at 5:30 and it has been extended until 6:15 and extends towards the east. this is the polygon, we are not familiar with tornado warning that much in this area and look at this and think do i live in this area? if you live south of boyertown or pottstown or royersford these
5:37 pm
are the areas you want to seek shelter immediately. with the potential of tornadoes we have the possibility of that debris. we are looking at and seeing the gate to gate sheer what that means is when you have a bright red and a bright green, rights next to each other it shows it's wind is moving in opposites directions, typically with a thunderstorm you get winds in the same direction but they are not next to each other that is a good sign. but that being said even if it's weakening this is still a dangerous storm and has it's potential for wind gusts up to 60-70 miles per hour. and again tornado safety if you live within that polygon, if you live in parts of berks or montgomery county you want to seek shelter immediately. avoid windows, that is the main
5:38 pm
thing go to the lower floors in your house and go to the basements. if you do not have a basements go to an interior hall or bathroom, put as many lairs between you and the outside. the biggest problem with not just tornadoes but straight line winds are trees and debris getsing tossed. get inside as quickly as possible. this is the 3-d we are focusing on berks and montgomery county but we have pocketses of heavy rain with flash flood warnings. high dew points and temperatures any storms we get will drop a lots of rain in a short period of time. this is the cell we are tracking that has promptsed the tornado warning. it's moving east-northeast at 30 miles per hour. and other cell producing heavy rain towards philadelphia and
5:39 pm
another cell at doylestown and trenton and this is an active time period and tomorrow will be very stormy but really is the focus is on the potential for tornadoes. a severe thunderstorm watch is posted until 9:00 for most of our viewing area and the potential of 70 miles per hour winds. this is storm tracker showing it's center of the storm with the potential for the torn tornadic activity yellow house or earlville, you want to seek shelter immediately that is the center of this particular storm. and that could create the tornadoes with the winds wrapping around the storm you see the hook and the red. that is the rain being wrapped around the center of a thunderstorm. the updraft doesn't typically have a lot of rain and that continues to push to the east. why don't we go ahead and widen this out chris again. and show you all the towns that
5:40 pm
are in the path of the storms, a little more, little more, the tornado warning is in effect until 6:15, a lot of times the national weather service sees it's storm weakening they will lift the warning but it's in effect until 6:15, as we show you the track it is heading towards pottstown and these are the areas in the path of the storm. weaver town and yellow house it's over you now and earlville and amitiville and lets go wider and show the larger communities. there are a lot of small communities in berks county and some areas are in the path of this potential tornado. you see now it will be heading just to the north of pottstown, north of phoenixville if it stays together heading towards worchester and landsdale as well. as it continues to push to the east and a lot of lightning strikes as well.
5:41 pm
wherever you hear the thunder and lightning get inside immediately even if the storm is not on top of you. thunder you hear before you get the lightning and you can get lightning that actually strikes about 10 miles ahead of a storm so you want to get inside immediately. there is that hook that prompted the tornado warning and what is the most intense part of the storm. north of pottstown as it continues to move east at 30 miles per hour. we have a shot right now, a live shot taking a look. at reading from the pagoda and you can see it's dark and stormy but really it looks like the worst of the storm is continuing to push to the east, and actually holding over pretty well as it does. moving at 30 miles per hour. adam joseph do you have new information? >> i was looking we have this page where we can have a communication with the national weather service and trying to look at the feed to see what
5:42 pm
they are thinking and at this point they continue the tornado warning. okay so at this point tornado warning until 6:15 but back to rick and monica at the desk. northern chester and montgomery county and berks county seek shelter as we continue. we are turning away because of significant developments in the missing men investigation in bucks county. officials say that cosmo dinardo, the person of interest in the case has confessed. lets go to sara bloomquist with the shocking details. >> reporter: yes, an extraly development in the last few minutes, cosmo dinardo's attorney comes out from the courthouse saying his klein has given a full confession in it's commission or participating in all four murders.
5:43 pm
this is attorney paul lang moments ago. >> he confessed to his participation or commission in the murders of the four young men. in exchange for that confession, mr. dinardo was promised by the district attorney that he will spare his life by not invoking the death penalty. >> that was attorney paul lang a defense attorney for cosmo dinardo, a full confession no death penalty in return. attorney lang says that dinardo has deep remorse and we saw him coming outs of the building a short time ago he told reporters he was sorry and his attorney
5:44 pm
would not say if others were involved and that dinardo told the district attorney of all the bodies. we expect an update from the da later on this evening. live in doylestown sara bloomquist, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you sara. we have been watching this story of course. thank you. for five days now from solebury township bucks county and what is the deaths of jimmy patrick, mark sturgis and thomas meo and those are the names of the four victims and we want to express our sympathies to their families. >> we want to go back to the weather sporty a tornado warning in parts of our area. what is the latest? >> the tornado warning continues and that tornado warning for berks county just to the south of reading until 6:15 south of
5:45 pm
boyertown and royersford the path of the possible storm with rotation with it. until 6:15. they just cut it back a lit. they took it way from north of reading but continues into boyertown and pottstown as well as royersford is passing through three counties. torn safety if you are just joining us if are you in a home get to the lowest level of that home. basement first floor. if just a first floor find an intour you're hallway away from the windows or office building or condominium gets on it's first floor of that particular building and interior room away from the windows. that is where it there were strong winds most injuries occur because of flying debris that comes into homes. as we look at the storm on radar, down to 10 lightning
5:46 pm
strikes this was more than 70 lightning strikes passing downtown reading, the good news here is weakening but still dangerous the warning is still up as the national weather service still looking at the radar as well. heading now to the north of pottstown, and limerick in the path of this 422 the very busy road. iron stone 547 where you can expect the possible circulation of that storm to pass through. cold brookdale at 5:49 and stowe at 5:49 and if we can flip that radar over to storm relative velocity we can look to see gate to gate sheer in the storm and we are sewing you that element of stormtracker 6 live double scan to see if there is any spin the atmosphere.
5:47 pm
are you looking for any green color a dark green backing up and touching a red on the radar, it's wins moving away from the radar and green like down here is moving towards the radar, it's opposite forces in the at most engineer and we don't zerotation and those two colors are pretty far apart and that is a good sign that they are not next to one another, we are not seeing the classic look on the velocity mode but that doesn't mean that something small can spin up because in our area it's ef 0's and 1's, they spin up and hit the ground quickly and go back up into the clouds here but douglas drive and glenville drive is where that possible hook is. you get the winds to wrap into the radar and you at only can look at this and say it looks
5:48 pm
funky with a hook to it. also in berks county is where this storm is passing through where there could be circulation. widen out just a tad here we can look again love to give warning down the road here, and here is the county border right here as it is passing out of berks county and moving into parts of montgomery county boyerstown and gilbert and here are the updated teems and brookdale 5:52 and upper glass grew at 5:53. this is berks county and this is montgomery county and starting to move into populated areas. where this possible rotation is,
5:49 pm
but the one good thing we continue to see on the radar is that the lightning strikes now down to 5 in this vantage point the storm is weakening but as a look that would be credited dangerous and it's hook in the radar as well. >> i am looking at the national weather service as well. five minutes ago they issued a statement that they continue the tornado warning. we see an indication -- it was a severe thunderstorm warning first and actually looks like it was weakening and we got the signature hook echo and they extended it. >> this until 6:15 and you see how it is extending now the warning in chester county and parts of montgomery county as well. as it continues to push quickly at 30 miles per hour. so if you do live in these communes, we don't have a lot of practice warnings but if you live within these polygons what
5:50 pm
you want to do right now you do want to seek shelter immediately. obviously anyone outside has to get inside and get pretty far inside. avoid any windows and go to the lowest floor of your home. if you have a basements go in there right away. when we get tornado warning and severe thunderstorm warning observe the problem is that there is debris being pushed along. this has prompted the tornado warning, when you see a radar signature like that, you see what looks like a hook. the winds wrapping around a storm. and in a thunderstorm you get a strong updraft and the center of the storm doesn't have rain and heavy rain wrapping around and
5:51 pm
this shows the towns we are looking at just to the west of new hanover. west moyer road and snyder road and shank road and locust road and winding road these are the areas that are getting hit the hardest. chris, lets go ahead and zoom out wide. give a heads up in the communities in the path of this storm. a severe thunderstorm is stretching from pottstown to boyertown north and west of lick rick. it's moving quickly. avenue storm we see is moving east-southeast at about 30 miles per hour. so that means you have filtered sunshine one moment and then the next moment it gets dark quickly and the intense storms. there is not a lot of warning
5:52 pm
with that. so 5:52 washington hill and kennel worth 5:53 and 5:56 saratoga and 5:57 fricks lock. and it's tracking north of limerick, if you lived there for a while. limerick has had a torn in the past and heading toward worchester and people are driving, up toward the blue route toward worchester call them and say stay put longer until this cell passes this is potentially dangerous. this is the 3-d, the training effect the path is moving east-southeast and with the lightning strikes there is an indication that the lightning
5:53 pm
strikes are going down that is good, that storm is weakening but we still have the severe thunderstorm warning and again i'm talking about the fact that we have the severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9:00. s going to be a stormy evening for the northern two-thirds of you viewing area and we have a combination of heat and humidity and approaching cold front. that is triggering strong storms and the triple point low developing along that. what that is doing is creating the potential of what is called wind shear, wrapping around a storm. you get winds going in different directions in the atmosphere that can spin up a brief tornado. again, if you are just joining us we have a tornado warning in effect until 6:15 for parts of berks county and parts of montgomery county and pottstown
5:54 pm
and royersford and moving quickly east-southeast at 30 miles per hour. and can you probably go -- >> there are some storm reports coming in north amity gardens train spotter has trees snapped and up rooted. and that is the only report coming in but that tornado warning continues and you and i have been here over 10 years we see when tornado warnings are extended like this and continue for this long it means the national weather service is really seeing something. >> there is a threat there. >> yes a threat they spin up and then kind of go away quickly but -- look behind you. speaking of how long they continue to extend it. >> the tornado warning has expired on the radar we have seen it as been weaken as it has been passing through and the
5:55 pm
classic hook signature has gone away at this point. we didn't have the gate to gate anymore. >> but what we want to stress is we have dangerous storms out there. we have flash flooding and lightning. >> i'm going through the graphics quickly i loaded one with the severe thunderstorm warning. you can see these boxes in the orange are severe thunderstorm warnings. go back one. because we have one still to the west so basically in montgomery county. where you have a tornado warning we have the severe thunderstorm warning and now we can see it's stormy weather and it extends into south jersey right now and you can see north of mown holly and new egypt and parts of mercer county and towards it's shore severe thunderstorm warnings, reports of wind damage
5:56 pm
with the thunderstorms and reports of some localized flooding witness storms and a lot of lightning strikes. chris, lets zoom out since we are off the tornado warning, we really have been focusing on berks county and chester county and montgomery county where we had the tornado warning that is canceled but you see a lot of storms firing up and draw your attention to what is happening to it's north and east of philadelphia. philadelphia right now there is not a lot going on but landsdale heavy rain from the same cell near trenton now thunder and lightning and heavy rain and lightning strikes 128 in the past 15 minutes. you can see how they are drifting to the east, jock sonville now over i-95 we have heavy rain. chris lets zoom in on the one in trenton because not only a lot
5:57 pm
of lightning but it's fact that the humidity is basically through the roof. we have dew points notice 70s. there is so much moisture with the storms it's like a sponge that is loaded with moisture and you touch it and it comes right out. this is what we are looking at the potential for flash flooding and just north of trenton crossing route 31 we have not only a lot of lightning strikes but heavy downpours sots evening commute this is going to be tough. this cell continues to move to the east, they are moving quickly. why don't we go to the east, east and south and see it's other cell. that continues to track through burlington county and also causing some very heavy downpours and jacksonville heading towards the shore and belmar as well. this 10 the lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes. stormtracker 6 live double scan is lighting up and if you don't like the stormy weather, with a cold front moving in it won't
5:58 pm
pass until tomorrow, we have more stormy weather tonight and more tomorrow, and the heat wave is ending. we'll keep you posted when "action news" continues after this.
