country. the tips you can do right now to keep your home cool without burning a hole in your wallet. and good evening. it's great to have you with us on this saturday. i'm tom llamas. we begin tonight with president trump, exploding over the multitude of issues clouding his administration. less than 24 hours after the stunning shake-up at the white house, the president ferociously unloading on twitter. his tirade about leaks, the russia investigation and the new bombshell report about attorney general jeff sessions and the campaign. the new white house communications director digging in on his first full day, explaining why he's deleting his old tweets criticizing then-candidate president trump. abc's david wright starts us off. >> reporter: today, the president's flamboyant new communications director -- >> thank you. >> reporter: -- sought to kiss off any and all harsh words he's

had in the past about his new boss. tweeting, full transparency, i'm deleting old tweets. past views evolved and shouldn't be a distraction. former wall street executive anthony scaramucci was already at pains to explain how in 2015 he called donald trump a hack. >> that's another hack politician. >> you called donald trump a hack? >> he's a hack politician -- >> he brings it up every 15 seconds, okay? one of the biggest mistakes i made, because i was an inexperienced person in the world of politics. i was supporting another candidate. >> reporter: today, scaramucci scrubbed his twitter account of old messages praising hillary clinton as "incredibly competent." denouncing the trump campaign as "a spectacle" and questioning newt gingrich's judgement for joining the team. scaramucci isn't the only administration official to be haunted by his own words, preserved in the digital record. today, "the washington post" reports that u.s. intelligence agencies intercepted phone calls from the russian ambassador that directly contradict attorney

general jeff sessions' claim that he never met with russians on behalf of the trump campaign. >> i never had meetings with russian operatives or russian intermediaries about the trump campaign. >> reporter: but "the post" reports the russian ambassador told his bosses in moscow the two discussed the campaign and policy issues. today, the president appeared to confirm "the post" report by condemning it as an "intelligence leak." quote, these illegal leaks, like comey's, must stop! one of a frenzy of early morning tweets. today the president commissioned the "uss gerald ford," the most advanced aircraft carrier ever built. a classic presidential photo-op projecting strength as commander in chief. >> this ship also ensures that if a fight does come it will always end the same way -- we will win, win, win.

we will never lose. >> reporter: today, outgoing press secretary sean spicer, who abandoned ship just yesterday, spotted by "the daily mail" sporting a "navy" t-shirt, walking his dog. last night, spicer told sean hannity he didn't appreciate being the butt of so many jokes on "saturday night live." >> i think that there were funny, but there's a lot of it that was over the line. it wasn't funny. it was stupid, or silly, or malicious, but there are times it goes from funny to mean. >> david, today, at the other end of pennsylvania avenue, congress struck a deal on russian sanctions. that could really tie the president's hands. >> that's right. house and senate negotiators have agreed any effort to ease sanctions on russia would have to approved by them. this is something that the white house has lobbied hard against. the senate appears to have a veto-proof majority, the vote set for tuesday. >> david wright, thank you.

>> we've been doing this for about a week and half and we're done. >> reporter: residents wading through floodwater to clear storm drains, others stacking sandbags to save their homes. this bridge in fayette county, iowa, gone. a state of emergency in parts of wisconsin after flood water washed out roads in vernon county. meanwhile, the east coast sizzling in the midst of a heat wave. humidity magnifying making it feel like 106 in virginia beach, 112 in st. louis. after days of oppressive heat here in new york, we're finally getting some relief. but parts of the heartland, still hot, feeling like more than 100 degrees. tom. >> that heat wave really taking over. all right, adrienne, thank you. let's get to meteorologist kate parker in for rob marciano tonight.

those storms are now on the move? >> reporter: yeah, tom, the hail and damaging wind have been the primary threat with these storms. but overnight, a flood risk as these march off toward the east coast. on sunday from the ohio valley, mid-atlantic, we're looking at the possibility of downbursts. damaging winds on the table. as far as the heat goes, we're not getting a break on sunday. by the time we get to monday, we'll see some changes. wichita, 101. 103 in raleigh. in central park, in the 90s today. but on monday, some good news here it will struggle to get out of the 70s. a little cooldown for july, tom. >> we'll take it. a lot of triple digits on that board. kait, thank you. one more head line about the weather. in charlotte, north carolina. crews forced to work in shifts because of the dangerous heat wave. several were treated for heat-related problems. the 101-year-old mill still smoking 24 hours later, fire officials say it could take a

>> reporter: tonight the louisiana mystery deepening. first the wife of a fire chief found dead inside their home. burned to the ground. 49-year-old beloved and retired schoolteacher. >> she was wonderful, compassionate, sweet. >> reporter: members of the community gathering friday near new orleans for the woman they thought died in a tragic fire. but in the middle of the memorial service, a bombshell, the autopsy revealing she suffered a gunshot wound. >> we're disappointing at the timing of the information. >> reporter: overwhelmed at the news. >> maybe the family would have been notified prior to the release. >> reporter: the chief reportedly at work when the fire call came in for his own home. the sheriff's office not calling the incident a homicide or

even saying if there are any suspects. >> i can't imagine it. i can't fathom it. >> reporter: tom, we reached out to the family but no response. the state fire marshal are working to determine the cause of that house fire. overseas now, the pentagon confirming a deadly bombing mistake in afghanistan. the police chief said at least a dozen national police officers were killed in a u.s. air strike. the attack was supposed to target taliban fighters. the police chief believes the officers were not in uniform and were mistaken for the taliban. and back here at home, news tonight about senator john mccain's condition. senator mccain, revealing he's been treated for brain cancer following surgery to remove a blood clot above his eye. his daughter, meghan, posting this photo of them after a like in arizona today. next tonight, the american parents accusing a hospital in mexico of holding their newborn son hostage in a battle over medical bills. the baby due in october, born

early while they were on vacation. the family claims when they tried to take the baby home the hospital refused, hitting them with a bill for thousands of dollars. here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: tonight, baby beckham ralph is home in indiana after a fight. not just for the preemie's life, but his family says, to get him released from the mexican hospital where he was born. >> it was health hostage -- hospital hostage. >> reporter: beckham's parents on vacation in cancun tuesday when mom michaela went into labor nearly 12 weeks before her due date. the family claims the hospital there refused to take her until they paid $3,000 upfront. and the family says the expenses kept piling up -- >> we want $4,000. we want $7,000. we want $8,000. >> reporter: charges for an emergency c-section and nicu care for little three-pound bekham, but also the family says, unexplainable fees including one for $4,000, just for the parents to see their son. >> we realized the gouging that was being done. >> reporter: the family says the hospital refused to take their health insurance and threatened

to stop treating beckham, unless the bills totalling about $30,000 were paid out of pocket in full. >> they were threatening to put him literally on the streets, a baby that's in an incubator. it was complete strong-arm tactics. >> reporter: the hospital denies the family's claims. saying they never threat enenedt to care for the baby. quote, we didn't care about the money, we provided them with everything. >> the family says with a lot of help, they scraped together the $30,000, plus $18,000 for a medevac flight to hospital in indiana. tom. >> a scary time for those new parents. marci, thank you. and a passing to note tonight, actor john heard has died, perhaps best known for playing the father in the "home alone" movies. he also appeared in "big" with tom hanks. he was found dead in a hotel in palo alto, california, after undergoing back surgery earlier

now to an incredible act of heroism caught on camera. walked into starbucks in fresno demanding money from a cashier, pulling a gun that turned out to be a toy, but a real knife. the customer slams in the back with a chair. the two start wrestling. both suffering stab wounds. the injuries weren't serious. that alleged robber ran off but was later caught. now to a police vehicle that could become the latest tool in the border battle. take a look, ford outfitting its f-150 pickup truck into a police pursuit vehicle. the police responder is rated for speeds up to 100 miles per hour. it is being developed only for agencies such as the u.s. border patrol. in michigan, investigators say a video contradicts what what worker said. surveillance video shows a janitor knocking over a gas tank in a car dealer's garage. sparking the fire. he told 911 operators he didn't know how the gas got on the floor.

memories, including the time he saved a baby from a disturbed man with a gun. >> i said if you just put the gun down on the seat i'll come up and we can talk face to face. but when that happened, i stepped up, grabbed the gun -- stepped back. holler at the other troopers, i have the gun and they had the baby. i didn't -- i didn't have his name or an address or anything to work from. >> reporter: that baby was 19 month-old john govia jr. who grew up wondering about the trooper to save his life. so years after searching, finally an archived article popped up on his screen. >> it was a eureka moment. i was blown away, after 30 years i finally found at least one of state troopers that saved me. >> reporter: he didn't stop there. he located charlie and wanted to thank him in person. but on the drive from chicago to iowa, john's car broke down. he called charlie and asked him to save him. again.
