and, vacation dangers. an american college student drowns while drinking at a mexican resort. tonight, the shocking stat about some of the alcohol served in that country. good evening. it's great to have you with us on this sunday. i'm tom llamas. we begin with the carnage in san antonio. a tractor-trailer loaded with immigrants, in the sweltering heat. police finding 38 people packed inside. nine have died. the grisly discovery in a walmart parking lot. 30 people rushed to the hospital. the horror revealed after someone from inside the truck approached a worker, asking for water. that worker calling for police.

now investigators saying there may have been as many as 100 people in the truck. and tonight, the driver is in custody. here's kenneth moton. >> reporter: tonight, a horrific and deadly case of human smuggling in san antonio. federal investigators say 38 immigrants inside this tractor trailer suffocating in excruciating heat. >> folks were literally baking in the heat, and did not have access to water. >> reporter: just after midnight, officials making the discovery. the trailer in a walmart parking lot with no air conditioning. eight dead, 30 more rushed to the hospital. 20 in critical condition. suffering from traumatic brain injuries from heat stroke and dehydration. most of them adults in their 20s and 30s but at least two are young children. tonight, one more dying at the hospital, bringing the death toll to at least nine. the u.s./mexico border just 50 miles away. the victims could have been in that truck for hours. temperatures inside, as hot as

140 degrees. police say video shows survivors jumped out of the truck before being discovered. an employee called 911 when he spotted a man who was desperate for water. prosecutors say the driver, james matthew bradley, has been taken into custody. >> it was a mass casualty situation. we treat it just like an airline crash. or any kind of incidents. >> kenneth, joining us live from one of the hospitals treating the victims. authorities saying there may have been up to 100 people crammed into the truck? >> reporter: yes, as many as 100 people were in the back of the truck. right now, agents are looking for the survivors who ran. some jumped into waiting cars. all of this as undocumented immigrants fight for their life in the hospital. >> kenneth, thank you.

let's move now to washington. the russia investigation kicking into a new gear. one member of president trump's inner circle, jasred kushner, will testify monday. and there are mixed messages from the white house about whether the president is discussing pardons, and the ability to pardon anyone, even himself. here's david wright. >> reporter: the president tweeted this weekend, all agree the u.s. president has the complete power to pardon. >> i'm in the oval office with the president, we're talking. he said he brought it up. but he said he doesn't have to be pardoned. there's no one around him that has to be pardoned. he was just making the statement about the power of pardon. >> reporter: the constitution gives the president broad powers

to pardon, but a president has never pardoned himself. president trump's personal lawyer says there has been no mention of pardons. >> the legal team is not researching the issue, because that is not on the table. there's nothing to pardon from. >> reporter: today, the new white house communications team was on the offensive. >> listen, there's obviously a communications problem. >> reporter: trying to change the talking points. >> the top three issues americans care about are health care, immigration, and jobs. the top three issues the media cares about are russia, russia, and russia. >> somebody said to me yesterday, i won't tell you who, if the russians hacked this situation, and spilled out the e-mails, you would have never seen it. >> reporter: when pressed about his source? >> how about, it was the president. he called me from air force one, he said, maybe they did it, maybe they didn't do it.

frontlines in syria. the u.s.-led coalition is looking for a knockdown punch against isis. pushing them out of their head janua headquarters in the city of raqqa. here's ian pannell. >> reporter: tonight, driving into the heartland of isis. going forward with american-backed forces. until recently, the militants controlled this land. >> going to the front lines with the christian fighters who are taking on the militants. the fighters take us to a makeshift mosque set up by isis. this is the flag of isis here. we find evidence of drug abuse. you can see the needle there. a sign of the pressure the militants now face. america is sending vehicles and guns to local forces. foreign volunteers have joined the fight against isis from america to europe.

[ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: she's says she's fighting to protect and liberate the people. but she's worried her troops don't have the guns or protection they need. this is the enemy. isis in raqqa, standing and fighting to the death as shown in their own propaganda film. we've come up to one of the front line positions. the fighters are holding this ground, trying to protect the other fighters trying to move forward.

in kentucky, homes broken or washed away. the search for a man missing. and a power line catching fire after being brought down by fallen trees. here's adrienne bankert. >> reporter: tonight, destruction across the midwest. powerful floodwaters ravaging entire towns and the storm is not over yet. this home carried two football fields away from its foundation in kentucky. look at it, teetering on the end of a river. >> we looked around, seen the outside neighbor's house and our neighbor's house was turned and we just got out. >> reporter: dozens more, rescued from the raging waters. >> be advised, woman in her car the water is up to her knees. >> reporter: tonight, the desperate search for one man, missing after his house was swept away. up to half a foot of rain, overwhelming streets, piling up cars. others now left stranded. >> this is epic for us. we've never had anything like this. >> reporter: nearly the entire town of fairbank, iowa desperately filling sandbags, trying to barricade their homes.

a similar scene in illinois. the galena river still rising. >> there's a storm coming, and lightning is on its way. and in indianapolis, race officials temporarily suspending the brickyard 400 after lightning was reported in the area. the storms moving east. in new york, we're under a flash flood watch. in the midwest, a painstaking wait for the waters to recede. tom? >> adrienne, thank you. we want to get more from kait parker, in for rob marciano. >> reporter: the flood watches aren't just for new york city. extending into d.c., baltimore. we're still looking at a risk of severe weather. the clouds have kept a lot of the severe weather at bay. but overnight, from d.c. to buffalo, we could see strong storms that could have hail and damaging winds.

"if i'd known that was the last time i'd speak to my mother, the things i would have said to her. looking back on it now, it is incredibly hard." >> there's not many days that go by that i don't think of her. her 20th anniversary year feels like a good time to remember, you know, all the good things about her and hopefully provide maybe a different side to her that others haven't seen before. >> reporter: william also says he thinks diana would have loved being a grandmother.

tourists traveling to mexico. after an american college student drowned after drinking at a resort bar. now, a shocking stat about some of the alcohol served in mexico. here's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: tonight, the death of a young wisconsin woman triggering new concerns about the cocktails at some popular resorts in mexico. 20-year-old abbey connor died in january during a family vacation at a five-star all-inclusive resort in playa del carmen. her family suspects her drinks were somehow tainted and they're not alone in their concerns. are 2015 report finding 43% consumed in mexico is produced illegally. officials there seizing nearly a million and a half gallons of bootleg liquor from hotels and bars. they say could be infused with grain alcohol or methanol. >> is someone putting alcohol in the drinks or is it tainted? i'm not sure. is it a combination of two? >> reporter: after her son

time now for our "index." and a massive fire destroying a five-building apartment complex outside of boston. the eight-alarm blaze, drawing firefighters from several towns. explosions and high winds complicating the fight. a nearby senior citizen home was evacuated. the apartment buildings, which were nearly complete, reduced to a smoldering pile of debris. the cause remains under investigation. and a manhunt is under way inside a north carolina national forest. police say 38-year-old phillip michael stroop is armed and dangerous somewhere in the pisgah national forest after fleeing authorities in a car chase, then stealing a bicycle at gunpoint and pedaling into the woods. he was spotted today by a camper. part of the forest is closed for the search. stroop has a history of violence. a new jersey man is $8 million richer, and has a deuce of hearts to thank. scott blumsteen, a 25-year-old with a degree in accounting, won the final hand at the world series of poker with a pair of twos.

finally tonight, the comeback. the olympic high jumper, paralyzed in an accident, making a promise to his bride to be. that's olympian jamie nieto soaring to new heights. but a freak accident recently crushed his dreams -- and his neck. >> i'd definitely like to thank god that i'm still alive. >> reporter: from his hospital bed just days after his surgery, jamie described what happened. >> i hit my head doing a flip. and my disc in my neck slipped and hit the nerve and paralyzed me. >> reporter: making things even worse, he was about to get married. >> a lot of things come into perspective when something like this happens. >> reporter: jamie vowing to his fiancee he we would walk down the aisle with her. >> i think i had a little anxiety because i wanted to walk the best i could walk. >> reporter: so jamie started intense physical therapy, learning to walk again. building back his muscles to

show his wife he wouldn't break his promise. and on their wedding day jamie started out on a walker to preserve his strength as he put on his tuxedo. then came that moment, after the new couple said i do. this home video is shaky, but you can see jamie slowly taking the first steps with his new wife. >> it's really a special day to see him walk down that aisle and to have him there on my arm. >> reporter: jamie's life has changed so much and though he can't compete against other olympians, he's taking that same drive to fuel his personal comeback. >> you just keep pushing and fighting and every time you fall you get back up and try it again. so tonight we salute jamie. and we thank you for watching.
