"action news" reporter vernon odom is live in wilmington tonight with more on the investigation and the outcry from the community. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, rick. wilmington's new police chief has been implementing tactics he learned in stops in new york city and in chicago. he says there has been progress made since he's been here since april, this wild weekend however of gunfire is not going to knock his department off its course. the makeshift memorial for homicide victim david bailey aged 23. he was gunned down friday afternoon in the 700 block of south van buren. his grieving cousin held a vigil at the murder scene today. >> that's how this city is, man. you can't really bring somebody back from that. but i love you bro'. it's only us. >> reporter: the bailey murder touched off a staggering string of shootings all across wilmington over the weekend. by 11:59 last night, a total of nine shootings spread out here in a total of six

separate incidents. craft men were replacing the bullet riddled glass on the door after it was hit with bullets last night at the landmark community center. the center was not the target. a motorist sitting the the stop sign last night on about we are street was hit in the arm way stray bullet. this community center is an all purpose agency that has served this area for more than 70 years. >> the access to guns, the use of social media to stir confrontation, it's just -- i think the access is there and it's just some -- it's unfortunate. >> this weekend was very disappointing. what happened we were going down, we were starting to go in the right direction but all these plans are for the long run and we have to sustain them and when these things happen we got to make sure they don't continue we get on top of them so there's no retaliatory shooting. >> reporter: many are horrified by the violence that shows no sign of stopping. >> it's disheartening because

it's senseless. it has no meaning. they're not getting anything out of it. >> reporter: chief tracy says they're going to stay on top of these things. he says tonight one arrest appears to be imminent as his detectives continue their manhunts, plural. live at police headquarters in wilmington, i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news." rick. >> all right, vernon thank you. now to breaking news. a search for a mother who allegedly left her child in a motel room. her mother neglected to check out at the front desk. >> walter perez live near that hotel in bensalem with the details for us. walter. >> reporter: hey, guys. as you mentioned this story started as a missing person case but moments ago we have confirmed through bensalem police that the suspect in this case, 34-year-old erica lopez of philadelphia has been found. authorities found her at einstein hospital in philadelphia undergoing some

kind of medical procedure. at this point we don't know what that procedure is. but this whole story started on saturday afternoon when surveillance video captured erica lopez allegedly captured her walking away from her hotel room and then walking barefoot down southbound route one never to return here to the hotel. nearly 24 hours later on sunday afternoon, cleaning crews went into that room to find her seven month old baby inside along with drug paraphernalia crack and heroin. at this point we're told the baby was saint to saint mary's medical center in langhorne and is in protective custody. the baby was not injured but at this point erica lopez does face several very serious charges including endangering the welfare of a child. much more on this story coming up on "action news" starting at 6:00 reporting live from bensalem walter perez channel6 "action news." monica. >> all right, thank you, walter. notorious outdoor drug market is being cleaned up this week in the kensington section of philadelphia.

officials believe up to a million syringes have been dumped on this property owned by conrail near trenton and lehigh. the railroad company reached an agreement last month with the city to remove the trash. crews are now moving in heavy equipment to start the cleaning process but officials say this is just the beginning >> this journey is about the people that are trapped in here, who live in the neighborhood in a working class, poor working class neighborhood who deserve safe streets. this is about the folks who come here who think it is okay to come to kensington to buy drugs. >> in addition to the cleanup there will also be a temporary social services hub where addicts can get help. >> right now tropical storm emily is hammering parts of florida with rain and wind. emily made landfall this morning just south of tampa bay and is moving east across the central part of the state. many areas were expected to get between two and 4-inches of rain with some communities seeing nearly a foot. nearly half of florida is that

passengers have on commercial planes. after advocacy group fliers rights challenged the faa saying cramped planes planes are a safety hazard and the government needs to do something about it. >> it does not appear that people can get out with the smaller seats. most recently there was an evacuation for a burning engine in an aircraft and it took about five minutes instead of 90 seconds. >> reporter: according to fliers rights, seat widths have decreased about an inch and a half since the early 2000's measuring up to 17-inches. the space between seats has also decreased going from an average of 35-inches to about 31 with some bargain airlines having just 28-inches of leg room. >> that's almost inhumane. it ought to change. the new evidence of safety gives the faa the opportunity to look into this. >> reporter: comfort is something the faa does not look at but they say they do consider it when testing and

painkillers in america. nearly 40 percent of adults say they took a prescription opioid in the year 2015. that is 92 million americans. and more than 11 million admitted misusing them such as taking them without a prescription or getting them from friends or relatives. 2 million said they have a drug use disorder. but some experts say those numbers may be even higher now. weight should not be a major factor in deciding whether you should have knee repair surgery. a team at ohio state university followed more than 400 patients who had a torn meniscus surgically repaired. some surgeons feel being overweight lowers the chance of success but there was no difference whether they had a bmi under 25 or up to 35. in fact, repairing it makes sense for controlling future weight. >> trying to save the meniscus save that cushion prevent some of the arthritic changes down the road within their knee can be very beneficial for them. >> the ohio state doctors hope

dewpoints tomorrow will stay in the 50's but then the rest of the week they'll be up in the 60's and actually i wouldn't be surprised if thursday and friday dewpoints are in the upper 60's instead of the mid 60's and also temperatures will be rising into the 90's. right now philadelphia 88 degrees. the same in allentown and reading. wilmington 88 degrees. cape may 81. and trenton currently 87. satellite and action radar showing blue skies and sunshine. there is one little pop-up storm i'm watching near scranton and that could clip the poconos during the evening hours. but generally it's mostly clear, it's pleasant overnight, 65 degrees in the cooler suburbs, about 70 degrees for center city and tomorrow more sunshine and we begin to heat things up. philadelphia 91 degrees, likely the start of our sixth heat wave of the year. allentown 88. trenton 90 and wilmington 89 degrees. today we had tropical storm emily form. it made landfall in florida and now it's really weakening

director anthony scaramucci is out. a murder mystery in southwest philadelphia when a man is found shot to death inside his car in the middle of a parking lot. >> ♪ >> and now to our developing story. a major staff shakeup at the white house tonight. communications director anthony scaramucci is out after only 11 days in his post. the announcement was made just hours after new white house chief of staff general john kelly was sworn in to his position. still not clear weather scaramucci voluntarily resigned or was asked to leave but again another shakeup at the white house tonight. abc's megan hughes is live with more on today's announcement. megan, good evening. >> reporter: the retired marine four star general just took over as white house chief of staff at 9:30 this morning. hours later, scaramucci was out. general john kelly immediately shaking up the white house hours after being sworn in. the white house announcing anthony scaramucci on his way out as communications director after just 10 days.

that happen ." last week the chairman of the joint chiefs said no changes will be made to the current policy until an official directive is received. world news tonight with david muir will have much more on today's major shakeup at the white house as well as the other top stories from around the world much watch it tonight at 6:30 following "action news" at 6:00. back here a 41-year-old man was shot to death inside a car in southwest philadelphia this afternoon. police officers found him along the 7900 block of lindbergh boulevard just before 3:30. still not clear why the man was targeted or if detectives have any leads in the case. >> a worker made a gruesome discovery along a stretch of road in pottstown montgomery county this morning. a body in the grass. officers responded to the western end of keystone boulevard about 7:30 a.m., that's where they did that find a body under a tree. the coroner was called to remove it and identify it. no word how the person died. in lehigh county a motorcycle passenger was killed in a crash along route 222 in upper macungie

township. authorities say the 51-year-old woman was thrown from the bike when the driver went over two raised traffic islands near mill creek road. the driver was also hurt but will recover. the woman's name is not being released at this time. >> a 24-year-old man was shot to death on the front steps of a home in north philadelphia. happened along the 2900 block of north fourth street just before 1:30 a.m. police rushed in and found the man shot in the head. officers took him to the hospital but he died a short time later. detectives do not have a motive and no arrests have been made yet. a substitute teacher in upper darby charged with assaulting two students will go to trial in september. 74-year-old james loftus is accused of hitting or poking one child with a cane and grab, the other by the neck causing the child to gasp for air. the alleged assault happened earlier this year at west park elementary school. loftus has been free on $20,000 bail. >> a pennsylvania man arrested last year outside new york

allegedly with a vehicle full of guns pleaded good to the guilty to weapons charges. he said he was going to the city to rescue a teenaged girl from a drug den. john cramsey. the girl they were going to help died of an overdose. authorities say he became an antidrug crusader after his own daughter died of an overdose. a trial date has been set for delaware county teen charged with tricking other young boys into sending him naked pictures. investigators say 18-year-old derek jones posed as a girl online and sent sexually explicit photos of himself supposedly to the boys asking for pictures of them in return. jones was a student at bonner pendergast high school. his trial is set to begin september 6th. >> a child's event in franklin square was disrupted by a protest over a deadly police-involved shooting. >> say david jones. >> say his name.

>> david jones. >> say his name. >> members of black lives matter began shouting at former pennsylvania governor ed rendell as he spoke at a celebration of franklin square's 11th birthday. the demonstrators vowed to continue disrupting public events until a grand jury looks at david jones' case. >> we want justice for david jones immediately. and if we don't get no justice, this city will get no peace. >> they have the right to be here. it is a public park and they have a right to say what they want to say. i wouldn't have disrupted a ceremony that was basically for children but that's their call. >> surveillance video captured jones being shot in the back while running from the scene of a traffic stop in hunting park last month. >> time for a check of the "action news" traffic report monday night. >> matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center and a lot going on for a monday, hm, matt. >> yeah, several things we're protesting that's for sure. we had an earlier vehicle fire on the vine street expressway rick and monica got us off to a bad start this morning. we're never really recovered.

you can see the vine east of the schuylkill eastbound side still a solid line. westbound's also backing up headed toward i-76. and of course i don't need to tell you but i will anyway the vine will close tonight and the next four nights starting at 11 o'clock for overnight construction. that's a different view of the vine street expressway there but i want to tell you, too, the ben franklin bridge is jammed coming into town getting reports of an accident as you head in towards center city. if you're coming into philadelphia, i think the walt whitman bridge would be the better bet. heading into new jersey, ben franklin bridge would be the way to go instead. watching a crash in upper dublin montgomery county this afternoon along susquehanna road at tennis avenue. there's also one in middletown township delaware county on the backside of what used to be the granite run mall along 352 ativan here road that. sounds like a pretty serious one. watch out for the emergency crews responding there. they're on the route one media bypass and baltimore pike just 13 miles per hour on the northbound side as you head toward 352 in that accident scene. over here in south jersey watching a crash along

>> niagara falls got a bit of a black eye over the weekend. a foul smelling discharge from a wastewater plant turned the base of the falls black. tourists and boaters were surrounded by this blackwater. local leaders obviously not happy. the black water has already dissipated. firefighters rescued a man and his dog from an suv trapped by flooding in colorado. the entire drama played out in what was a dried up creek bed. heavy rain though sparked this flash flooding turning the creek bed into a raging waterway. well, as the water rose up over the suv, firefighters you see used a ladder to save the driver and the dog. by the way, the man told them the pull out and save his dog first. >> wow. all right. time for sports. jeff here and the phillies were somewhat active before the trade deadline today weren't they. >> very active again today. by the way, they are no longer the worst team in baseball.

we're still sitting there in philadelphia. 88 in wilmington, 86 in millville at the shore 79 for long beach island, 81 for cape may and up in the lehigh valley, matching wilmington and philadelphia at 88. so, as you go through the evening here, again, just a few cirrus clouds at times and then we'll lose the clouds after sunset under a clear sky. it will be warm and very quiet, 86 at 7 o'clock, 84 degrees at 8 o'clock and then we drop into the upper 70's between about 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. high pressure is in control and we can see that on the satellite and radar here in the eastern half of the country. very quiet. the only thing that is really firing up is some downpours in the mountainous terrains of west virginia and even parts of here in pennsylvania up in the poconos, a couple of downpours popping in the last hour and that is where they'll be concentrated through most of this week. you have to get that kind of terrain difference of the air mass with the higher mountains and then those valleys and when you get that mixing going on sometimes you can pop storms and that will be the case this week.

but as you look to the west a little unsettled weather in the midsection of the country and we have tropical depression emily down in florida. temperatures tonight dropping into the mid 60's for the lehigh valley, 67 in trenton, 65 millville. upper 60's dover as well as cape may under a clear sky, remaining still on the comfy side. but that changes just a tad tomorrow. humidity comes up just a little bit. not all that oppressive out there but you'll feel the humidity a little more than today under that full sunshine through much of the day. once again, upper 80's into the lower 90's for some locations as our jet stream heads way off to our north and west here pumping in that southerly wind. what will become tropical storm emily again, will head out to sea but could bring some large swells or rip currents in the middle of the week for the jersey shore and the delaware beaches and then this trough comes in over the weekend and that's our cooldown to kick everything away. but until then, it's slightly humid at the shore tomorrow, mid 80's for highs, low risk for rip currents as we go into our tuesday.

ocean is really warm at 75 degrees. 85 in sea isle city with that sunny sky and 86 for the beaches in delaware and the ocean even a little warmer there at 76 with that east wind you're pulling in some of that gulf stream warm water. as we look at the exclusive accuweather 7-day. forecast you can see a string of low 90's so another heat wave on the way and it will be a minimal heat wave since temperatures won't go all that high into the 90's and the humidity will stay on the slightly humid side here as we get into wednesday, thursday, friday. most areas stay dry but watch for some pop-ups lehigh valley or poconos in the afternoon and then as we get into the weekend, that trough comes in so an early morning and showers saturday. returning sun late 84. there you can see that drop-off into the low 80's on sunday and monday with the low humidity coming in and sun and clouds so a big change to come in in time for our weekend. >> okay. >> thank you sir. >> thank you adam. welcome back. stay on top of the weather with our 6abc app. with the hourly and seven-day forecasts just a tap away and
