humid summer night. philadelphia didn't receive a drop of rain. but northeast philadelphia kind of got 2.5" and i love this photo that is posted on my facebook page because it literally shows how lightning can strike out of the blue. we have blue skies, we have a rainbow and we also have a pretty vivid cloud-to-ground lightning strike over northeast philadelphia at 6:00 and what we had today pop up air mass thunderstorms pretty common in the summer the reason we get them part of the reason at least the trigger is the sun. the sun heats the ground, you get the rising parcel of air, we have the warmth, we have the humidity and with the uneven heating on the ground this is when we got pop up thunderstorms, hard to tell exactly where they will happen but they usually happen late in the afternoon during the heating of the day and we do have a chance of more of these as we head through the week, about 30% chance tomorrow and thursday, friday ahead of a cold front
