eroded part of the track. overnight in chicago severe storms forcing the lollapalooza music festival to evacuate. the show attended by 100,000 shutting down an hour early. singer lorde at the beginning of her set when officials decided the crowd needed to get out. in new jersey flooded roads causing a nightmare for drivers. in baltimore, severe storms sending a tree crashing onto a car. one of the passengers, a 14-year-old girl, pronounced dead at the scene. and if you're waking up right now in new york city give it about 20 minutes or so, lightning about to blow through brooklyn and queens too. look at this, severe weather moving east with that low and the associated cold front, the timing and the impact will really be late afternoon and evening. you can see a couple of lines of storms within these clusters, there could be damaging winds, again, 60 to 70 miles per hour and doesn't end there. the cold front instigates enough saturday morning 9:00 a.m. new york city up through albany down through the shore, the jersey shore, southern, you could see more of these storms.

a whole lot more coming up in a couple of moments. >> we can hear the rumbling outside the window. overnight the president holding a rally in west virginia attacking the russia investigation as we now learn special counsel robert mueller is now working with the grand jury on this. the president also facing more leaks from the white house in washington. "the washington post" publishing transcripts of his actual calls with world leaders. attorney general jeff sessions will speak later this morning about a crackdown now on the leakers and this afternoon president trump will start his first vacation since taking office. he'll spend it at his golf club in bedminster, new jersey. first though we want to get to new details about the russia investigation, this grand jury and our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega back with us from the white house. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: a lot of news to get here, david. good morning to you. this investigation has entered an entirely new phase. this grand jury means it will likely stretch on for months but president trump is on the offensive. he calls this russia story a total fabrication. president trump on a swing to

west virginia overnight turning his megarally for supporters into a full-throated assault on the russia allegations. >> the russia story is a total fabrication. it's just an excuse for the greatest loss in the history of american politics. that's all it is. >> reporter: one hit after the next. >> most people know there were no russians in our campaign. there never were. we didn't win because of russia. we won because of you. >> reporter: and the crowd loved it. >> what the prosecutors should be looking at are hillary clinton's 33,000 deleted e-mails. >> reporter: now joining the inquiry into possible collusion between the president and his team and russia, a grand jury convened by special counsel robert mueller. abc news has learned that grand jury has been secretly working for weeks, reuters reporting the

panel has issued subpoenas in connection with that trump tower meeting where donald trump jr. was promised dirt on hillary clinton. the president's personal lawyer says there is no indication the president himself is a target. >> with respect to the impaneling of the grand jury, we have no reason to believe that the president's under investigation here. >> reporter: but the news seemed to catch the top white house lawyer dealing with the investigation by surprise. special counsel to the president ty cobb said the white house favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of his work fairly. the white house is committed to fully cooperating with mr. mueller. with that investigation now entering new terrain, the president remained defiant and his supporters right behind him. >> have you seen any russians in west virginia or ohio or pennsylvania? are there any russians here tonight, any russians? >> reporter: that crowd was eating that up. no surprise that the white house

would not have known about this grand jury because grand juries operate in secret. president trump is up early and tweeting this morning. take a look at this electoral map that he retweeted, a sea of red there. you can see it. it says we won. move on, david, on his radar once again that 2016 election. >> all right, back to the electoral map. cecilia, thank you. let's bring in dan abrams who is with us here this morning. you heard cecilia mention there they do their work in secret, obviously, these grand juries. it's a signal this case is intensifying but what does it tell you. >> well, first of all it says now they have the power to subpoena witnesses. they can subpoena documents, et cetera. but all this really says to us is that this investigation isn't going away. those who thought and hoped, ah, things will just begin and they'll drop it, et cetera, all this means is, this investigation is serious, indictments could come as a result of it and now they have the power of a grand jury behind them. >> what specifically can this special counsel robert mueller do that he couldn't do before. >> it's a subpoena power in

particular. it's the ability to get witnesses to come in and testify under oath. it's the ability to get documents. it's the ability to get financial records. those things can all now be subpoenaed via the grand jury as part of this investigation. so people talk about grand juries, sometimes there are investigative grand juries which are really just used to subpoena documents and witnesses but more often grand juries are used ultimately to seek dimes. and that's the danger. for not just donald trump but anyone who is the subject of this possible investigation. >> you know, dan, i took note of what the president's personal attorney said about this reacting late yesterday saying we have no reason to believe the president is under investigation here. but do we really know. >> i don't know what that means. the fact we have no reason to believe, yeah, you mean there hasn't been a leak that says the president is specifically under investigation. i don't think there's any question that the president is part of this investigation. does that mean he's going to get indicted? absolutely not. but the notion that there's no

reason to believe that the president is part of this just doesn't make any sense. so we'll have to see as this continues. >> and as you say, the biggest signal is it's not going away. >> that's right. >> dan, thanks as always. amy. >> now more on those leaked transcripts of president trump's private conversations with foreign leaders. the white house furious and now this morning the department of justice is taking action against those leakers. abc's mary bruce has all the details now from washington. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, amy. well, for weeks president trump has railed against the leaks coming from within this building calling them damaging, illegal and vowing to crack down and now this morning after yet another controversial leak, this administration is finally poised to act. for months the trump white house has been getting drowned by leaks. >> we're going to find the leakers. they're going to pay a big price for leaking. >> reporter: and this morning the trump administration is set to announce their plan to plug the holes. on capitol hill, top republicans are fed up too. >> these people should be fired.

they should be out of government. they're disloyal to our government and i hope that that's what's going to happen. >> reporter: members of both parties are reeling after "the washington post" published leaked transcripts revealing contentious conversations between president trump and foreign leaders. just days after he took office, the first with mexican president enrique pena nieto about trump's signature campaign promise to build that wall. >> who is going to pay for the wall? [ chanting "mexico" ] >> who is going to pay for the wall? >> reporter: on the phone pena nieto says the idea mexico will pay up is completely unacceptable. president trump explains, i have to have mexico pay for the wall. i have to. i have been talking about it for a two-year period. adding, this is the least important thing that we are talking about, but politically this might be the most important. when pena nieto still insists mexico will not pay, trump implores, you cannot say that to the press. the press is going to go with

that, and i cannot live with that. trump argues they need a wall to stop drugs from flowing across the border noting i won new hampshire because new hampshire is a drug-infested den. that did not sit well with new hampshire senator maggie hassan. >> what an outrageous statement. >> reporter: now in just a few hours the attorney general and the director of national intelligence will brief reporters here in washington about why they feel these leaks threaten national security and, david, what they plan to do to put an end to all this. >> all right, mary bruce with us from washington as well. thank you. president trump as we mentioned tweeting already this morning perhaps trying to turn the page from the russia investigation, the leaks, he's now praising a deal announced overnight by toyota and mazda to build a $1.6 billion assembly plant right here in the u.s. and expect to create 4,000 jobs and the president calling it a great investment in american manufacturing. we turn now to that massive fire overseas we've been tracking all night. flames consuming dubai's torch tower as residents slept in the

skyscraper stretching more than a thousand feet tall and abc's james longman has the latest on the investigation. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, david. yes, this morning investigators try to work out just how that 82-story skyscraper in dubai managed to catch fire. take a look at these dramatic pictures, fire ripping up the side of the torch tower, one of the tallest residential buildings in the wore, it burned for two hours across 40 floors. >> james, we know residents were trying to get out as alarms were going off but we also have learned this is not the first time there's been a fire inside that building. >> reporter: that's right. unbelievably just two years ago there was a fire in this building and people then pointed to some of the building materials and it's all about this cladding, the cladding around the outside, does it make the fire spread quicker and it reminds us, of course, of those pictures of againfield tower in london that killed 80.

fortunately no one died and everyone got out safely but concerns are still extremely -- people are really thinking about this now. >> we're glad everyone got out this time. horrific photos from overnight. james longman with us, james, thanks so much. michael. >> thank you, david. now to that nationwide manhunt for northwestern professor and an oxford employee on the run and considered armed and dangerous. abc's adrienne bankert has the details and good morning, adrienne. >> reporter: good morning to you too, michael. it's a twisting, shocking story. police doing all they can to catch up with these two men with strong ties to academia, now prime suspects in a most gruesome crime. this morning, u.s. marshals joined law enforcement for a professor and employee of two of the most prestigious colleges in the world. the pair wanted for first degree murder. >> both subjects considered armed and dangerous. >> reporter: that's 42-year-old wyndham lathem, former microbiology professor at northwestern university.

police believe he and andrew warren, a treasury employee at oxford are guilty of stabbing 26-year-old trenton cornell-duranleau to death in lathem's luxurious chicago apartment. police arriving on scene last thursday at 8:30 p.m. after an anonymous source called 911 telling them a crime had been committed on the tenth floor. >> this place is very safe most of the time i i've been here 14 years. >> reporter: while a motive is unknown police believe lathem had a relationship with cornell-duranleau. northwestern telling abc news he's been placed on administrative leave currently banned from entering any of their campuses. >> i had him give a talk to some students about his research and he just seemed like a perfectly normal guy. >> reporter: and oxford university officials are also in touch with investigators. police say the two are no longer in illinois and are using social media to speak directly to the suspects and hopefully for a

peaceful surrender. >> we sure hope it's going to be peaceful. >> they flagged their passport. hopefully they're not getting too far. >> all right, adrienne, thanks so much. now to new developments in that hbo cyberattack. the hackers are now revealing their plan for that stolen material and their motive for taking it in the first place. abc's diane macedo is here with all of those details. good morning. >> reporter: amy, good morning. more bad news for hbo today. the hackers are announcing via e-mail they'll release the leak gradually every week with the next release to come this sunday morning and could include material related to the hbo prize franchise "game of thrones." now, according to "the hollywood reporter" someone claiming to be the hacker sent them an e-mail revealing the motive behind the attack is money adding we have weeks of negotiations with hbo officials, but they broke their promise and want to play with us. the e-mail also claims that they have access to hbo's e-mails. the alleged hackers sign off hbo is falling. the fbi and top security firms are investigating this data breach.

but it's still not known what kind of material the hackers actually got ahold of. they have already released, though, unaired episodes of the rock show "ballers" and are the room 104" and 1.5 terabytes is a lot, equaling 500 hours of video so for now this latest news is keeping hbo underscanably on edge. >> understandably indeed, diane, thanks so much. a big relief this morning for people in the outer banks of north carolina. tourists are now being allowed to return to two popular islands today, the power is back on after a week-long outage forced 60,000 visitors to evacuate cutting their vacation short after a construction crew struck an underground cable. officials had feared the repairs would take much longer. still this was a major blow to the region's economy and as you might imagine, three class action lawsuits have already been filed over there. michael. >> all right. thank you, amy and have you ever had a chance to wait out the rain at a baseball game? that delay, well that, could be

in a massachusetts courtroom. >> ms. carter, guilty finding having entered on the indictment charging you with the involuntary manslaughter of conrad roy iii. now sentences you to 2 1/2 years in the bristol county house of correction, 15 months of said sentence shall be deemed a committed sentence. >> reporter: on thursday afternoon 20-year-old michelle carter sentenced for her role in the death of her boyfriend conrad roy iii. in june the surprising verdict. >> this court having reviewed the evidence and applied the law thereto now finds you guilty. >> reporter: guilty of involuntary manslaughter. her weapon, text messages urgine through carbon monoxide poisoning inside his pickup truck. carter then 17 firing off messages like, if you want it as bad as you say you do it's time to do it today even telling him to get back in the truck when he gets nervous. >> she manipulated and deceived his family into believing she tried her hardest to save him.

she lied to the police about her role in his death. >> reporter: on thursday, during the sentencing conrad's sister speaking through tears. >> not a day goes by without him being my first thought waking up and my last thought going to bed. throughout those 13 years with him i've had countless amazing memories. they'll always be with me. >> reporter: his dad taking aim at carter. >> michelle carter exploited my son's weaknesses and used him as a pawn in her own well-being. she has not shown any remorse. >> reporter: but in a surprise turn, the judge granting the defense request for carter to remain free while the state court of appeals determines whether or not to reverse the conviction. >> the conviction may be reversal, but the time spent in prison is not. >> reporter: and in an abc news exclusive, roy's family speaking out post sentencing sharing their anguish. >> should have been escorted out of that courtroom in

i know this has been a tremendous loss for you and your family and yesterday was yet another difficult day. i want to ask you, makenna, when the judge sentenced michelle carter to 2 1/2 years saying she would serve 15 months of it but saying she could remain free while she appeals this, what was your reaction? >> i was just sick. just sick to my stomach the fact that she can just be free and my cousin, he's not here 2 1/2 years isn't enough. it's not enough. she should be behind bars. >> in the end she was convicted on involuntary manslaughter. the judge determining that words, that text messages do matter. was there any justice here for you? >> just a little bit. not enough. it's not enough. she should be in jail. it's just -- it's just i don't understand how someone can be free knowing that she deliberately told him to get back in the car and she gets to sleep in her own bed tonight. she gets to eat breakfast. she gets to wake up with her family. meanwhile, where is conrad?

where is conrad? he's watching us. from up above. he's not going to be here anymore. >> we know that your cousin conrad did struggle like many teenagers do, your family said he battled depression. what message do you hope to send to other teenagers out there suffering like your cousin did? >> that there's always an open door. there's so much more to live for. i mean you guys can call me and talk to me. there's so much more -- no one should have to struggle with social anxiety and depression and everyone should love themselves, you it's just so hard and things always get better. there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, always. >> and makenna, i know that while you want justice, while you'd like to see some remorse in this case, you have also said that you believe michelle carter needs help. >> she does. no normal human being who doesn't have problems would tell someone to get back in the truck. it was a toxic needs help and

bad, lazy, stupid, worthless, these are obviously incredibly hurtful. very hard to hear and they're medically very wrong. >> ually have some tweets. some of our viewers tweeted experiences. claudia said i weighed 168 pounds i'm 5'8" and the doctor wrote i was an obese native female. that was ten years ago and i have never forgotten. and theoctor told them they could, quote, stand to lose a little more weight. they left and took the walk of shame. the importance of the patient/doctor relationship. how it impacts people emotionally can impact them physically. >> the bottom line is that not all health care providers are good communicators. they're not all considerate. not all sensitive and, yeah, you run the risk of obscuring any positive clinical or medical or therapeutic interaction there by the negative. that's all someone is going to hear and they might not come back for screening tests or follow-up but i think it's also

important to realize that ideally there should be a two-way street. doctors need to be better communicators in every way. but patients also need to try to be receptive and when someone says, especially a health care provider, i'm concerned about your weight, hopefully they hear that as a medical observation, not a social judgment. so we need to do a lot of work on this. >> certainly there is a way to say the same thing to have the message but have it be heard -- >> constructively or in a kind way. >> what's your advice. >> when i got board certified in obesity medicine we learned the facts. we don't understand completely what causes it. it's not caused by laziness or by a lack of commitment so i think the tips here for doctors, you should ask the patient permission to discuss their weight. ask them first. you should explain the health concerns that exist that we know from medical data and literature and set realistic goals not i'd like you to lose 100 pounds because i'm pulling that number out but this is what we need to
