dangerous flash floods. and the burst of rain turning some roads into rivers. the system now moving into the northeast, with millions still in the path. we begin with rob marciano. >> reporter: tonight tulsa is a wasteland of debris. the view from above showing the windows of this 30-story high-rise blown out. the windows of this high rise blown out, an entire strip mall reduced to rubble, at least 30 people injured, 6 at this tgi friday's. >> it's pretty extensive. you can see where the storm came through. >> reporter: late today, officials confirming it was an ef-2 tornado with winds of at least 110 miles per hour. the twister developing so quickly, some areas didn't have time to activate sirens. lightning tearing through the sky. in this severe nighttime strike. up to 14,000 left without power. of the 30 injured, none considered life threatening.

in kansas city, torrential rain thrashing on windshields and flooding roadways. water rescues required for some stranded motorists. this submerged car abandoned, lights flickering. and in new orleans, up to ten inches of rain drowning the big easy. >> it was a nightmare navigating those streets. >> reporter: roadways swamped, cars abandoned. this neighborhood inundated. >> it's crazy. you can't go out your front door. >> reporter: restaurant owners flooded for a second time, bringing back memories of the city's worst disaster. >> it's like katrina all over again. >> reporter: people fleeing their homes however they can. >> strong statement. let's get an update on new orleans and where the storms are headed now. hey, rob. >> a bit of a break across new orleans. a smattering of storms on this boundary. the midsouth, midatlantic, during the day, rounds of heavy rain developing. a flash flood watch posted for

this is not a vacation -- meetings and calls!" he has ground to make up. trump's agenda held hostage by the relentless focus on russia. >> the president has said the entire investigation is fabricated. that this is a conclusion in search of evidence. they've come up with nothing. >> we know now what has come up in just the last few weeks is that don jr. responded to an e-mail saying that he was going to get russian government information on hillary clinton. that was not out during the campaign. that was revealed just in the last several weeks. >> right. but what came of that meeting? nothing. >> reporter: today kellyanne conway admitted that trump is now starting to lose some of his core group of supporters. >> his approval rating among republicans and conservatives and trump voters is down slightly. it needs to go up. they are telling him, just enact your program.

>> reporter: today the deputy attorney general who appointed special counsel robert mueller warned there are limits to the scope of his investigation. >> the special counsel is subject to the rules and regulations of the department of justice. we don't engage in fishing expeditions. >> reporter: george stephanopoulos pressed kellyanne conway. >> does the president commit to not firing robert mueller? >> he's not discussing that. >> but will he commit not to fire him? >> he's not even discussing firing bob mueller. >> that's not what i'm asking. >> reporter: just in case the president is thinking of firing mueller, a bipartisan group of senators is drafting a bill to ensure trump can't do so on a whim. republican tom tillis is one of the sponsors. >> we don't want to restrict the administration's authority or the department of justice from removing a counsel, we just want to make sure to the american people they can be convinced it was done for the right reasons. >> let's get to david wright,

joining us live. given the president's current predicament, a growing number of republicans are already testing the waters for a possible presidential run in 2020. and the vice president is shooting down reports he's one of them. >> reporter: that's right. the vice president went so far as to release a statement saying he's 100% focused on the president's agenda and on the president's re-election. saying reports that suggest otherwise are both laughable and absurd. tom? >> david, thank you. next to the nationwide manhunt expanding for an accused rapist who made an escape. the suspect overpowering a deputy while shackled during a van transport, stealing the deputy's gun. here's ron claiborne with reports the fbi has joined the search. >> reporter: tonight, a desperate manhunt in ohio and beyond for an escaped inmate armed with a deputy's gun. >> we've yet to find him.

has possession of a firearm, up to 30 rounds of ammunition. he has to be getting cold and hungry. >> reporter: brandon powell, accused of rape, escaped friday while being transferred from a hospital near toledo after being treated there for injuries from a suicide attempt while in jail. these hospital security images show powell as he was being led to the police vehicle by the officer. he's in handcuffs, attached to a belt. his legs were shackled. while sitting in the back of the transport vehicle powell somehow put the deputy in a headlock, the car crashed and he took the officer's weapon. the inmate then forced the officer to undo his shackles before handcuffing him to the steering wheel. powell then took the deputy's cell phone, wallet and ammunition and disabled his radio and car. powell fled on foot. >> you don't take a pistol from one of my deputies and threaten him with it. he's going to be held accountable for that when he's located. >> reporter: tonight, u.s.

its final approach, it crashed into the waters. investigators suspending the search and rescue operation for three missing service members, now calling it a recovery mission. the osprey flies like an airplane, but lands like a helicopter. but a has a controversial history. during its development, 23 people died during 22 test flights. among those missing tonight, 26-year-old first lieutenant benjamin cross. his brother tells us he joined the marines because he loved challenges, and loved to fly. >> he would sacrifice himself in a minute to make sure his fellow service members were safe. it falls right in line with his character. >> reporter: pentagon officials tell me it could be months before the osprey and its data recorder are recovered, along with the missing marines. tom?

>> stephanie, thank you. now to a shocking kidnap overseas. involving a model allegedly drugged and stuffed inside of a bag. the suspected abductor behind bars. authorities say he was trying to auction the woman on the web. here's jennifer eccleston. >> reporter: tonight, italian police investigating a bizarre kidnapping case involving a british model allegedly drugged, bound and stuffed inside a suitcase. 20-year-old chloe ayling telling italian broadcaster rai that she was terrified and feared for her life. according to police, men posing as photographers lured her to italy and doped the young model with a powerful sedative, ketamine. then moving her from that suitcase, into a car trunk, to a remote cabin near the french border. handcuffing her to furniture in this house for six days. the abductors allegedly using encrypted accounts, asking the model's agent for more than

$300,000 to stop them from selling her as a sex slave. police in the cabin where the model was allegedly held recovering a flyer advertising an online criminal network, operating from an encrypted part of the web inaccessible through standard browsers. tonight, a polish man with alleged links to online sex trafficking in custody. "he was dangerous and working for an organization on the deep web." police saying after the captive was free they nabbed the suspect who they say admitted being with the model but has a "different perspective" of the incident. tonight, an investigation is under way here in britain and in italy where they are still looking for other suspects. tom? >> jennifer, thank you. now to florida, where the sinkhole emergency keeps getting worse and worse. two more homes condemned today, and authorities facing the

question, can they save that neighborhood? here's adrienne bankert. >> reporter: it's the supersize sinkhole that keeps swallowing more of this florida block. tonight, another two homes deemed unsafe, more homeowners displaced. in all, six homes have been destroyed or condemned on ocean pines drive in land-o-lakes, florida. plagued by a depression the size of a large pond that appeared july 14th, growing to 225 feet in just a few hours. this weekend, drone video shows the sinkhole has now expanded to 260 feet at its widest point. more than three quarters the length of a football field. and 50 feet deep. residents nearby remain on the edge. >> i think that the surrounding area can't help but feel questionable and unsafe because there is no guarantee. >> reporter: demolition crews say they expected to see some erosion as they worked. a 10 by 80-foot-long section of earth collapsing saturday. but new cave-ins proved so dangerous, crews had to leave. returning to work from inside

and the terror scare at a popular tourist destination. policemen scuffling with a man at the eiffel tower. a counterterror investigation has been launch into the matter. in california, a dangerous chemical leak. officials reporting a hazmat incident involving a large container ship leaking an unidentified substance. at least a dozen people hurt, many of them ship workers. the fire department says precautionary measures have been taken to keep it from spreading. and a major development in the story of the ride accident. kmg, the maker of the fireball saying tonight its investigation found excessive corrosion led to the ride's catastrophic failure last month. the manufacturer says corrosion inside a support beam weakened the 18-year-old ride. the company says it is working with safety experts to develop an inspection protocol. and if you're afraid of heights, don't watch this one.

the lobstermen hauling the catch of their life. a real national treasure. in acadia national park in maine, there are majestic sights but two lobstermen recently saw something they couldn't believe. in the open water, just yards from their boat, a bald eagle struggling to stay afloat. >> i've never experienced anything like it. i've been on the water since i was a little kid with my father and my grandfather. and i've never seen nothing like it before. >> john saw something floating in the water, flopping around. pulls up next to it, and it turns out to be an american bald eagle trying to take flight. but he was waterlogged. >> reporter: the two men jumped into action, turning a piece of wood into a tiny life boat. the eagle hopped on and the lobstermen pulled it in. >> he climbed right up on the board and i was holding onto the board and he was looking at me and i was looking at him, and then figuring what are we going to do with him now. >> reporter: the eagle got up on the stern, waiting for its wings to dry.
