bob. >> reporter: brian and sharrie, a neighbor who you are about to seesaw something wrong going on, she picked up the phone and called 911 and she is the one who saved the day. chopper6 shows us the moment it ended. two suspects come out of the home police say they intended to rob in plymouth meeting their hands up. s.w.a.t. teams had guns pointed at their backs. it was these four men from philadelphia. they have previous criminal records. detectives say their goal come to cambridge road and steal from a random home. >> a group of four people bored got in their truck and drove up to the suburbs of philadelphia. >> reporter: the home they picked is owned by a man who lives alone in his 70's. he was inside. police say when the suspects went in they almost killed the homeowner. >> the first two went in and placed a gun in his mouth and threatened to kill him. >> reporter: carol bergman were you home and looking outside around 8:30 a.m. when the crooks showed up. >> all of a sudden i saw this

black truck come up and a guy jumped out and he had a hoodie on. >> reporter: she immediately called police when she says they knocked on all the doors and then climbed through a window. >> took the screen off and he opened up the window jumped in. >> reporter: in minutes a sharp shooter posted up in one of her bedrooms. >> he's with all his heavy stuff and his rifle and i thought, ohing okay. >> reporter: we're told the homeowner was able to escape when that police first arrived. that's when the two teens jason hunt and madis tried to run and they were catch. the other two barricaded themselves inside of the. >> additional officers responded and approached the house and were confronted by a marked male who pointed a and handgun at the officers. the male ran back inside the home and barricaded the door. >> reporter: after a three hour stan caused they came out. they were surrounded with nowhere to go. >> that is the home where these four suspects went into the house that has the screen

door opened. as for that homeowner we're told he is banged up pretty bad but expected to make a recover regent the lesson learned today, though, is if you see something suspicious going on in your neighborhood even if you don't think it's much give the police a call. reporting live in plymouth meeting bob brooks channel6 "action news". >> we've got some breaking news right now. president trump has just issued a response to north korea as tensions with that country escalate once again. one day after north korea suggested it might use its nuclear weapons against the united states, the president said this. >> north korea best not make any more threats to the united states. they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. he has been very threatening beyond a normal statement and as i said, they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this

world has never seen before. >> that comment issued minutes ago is generating widespread reaction right now and prompting questions about what might come next if north korea as it's prone to do threatens once again. we'll have a live report for the very latest on this including reaction from lawmakers tonight on "action news" at 5:00. >> a long running neighborhood dispute in west goshen chester county has turned deadly. clayton carter is accused of killing his neighbor brooks jennings early this morning. investigators say carter shot and killed jennings on the 300 block of box elder drive early this morning. it was late this afternoon carter was charged with homicide in what police describe as a senseless crime. "action news" reporter john rawlins will have much more on this story coming up in a live report at 4:30. >> authorities are investigating if a fire that demolished a two story row home in philadelphia's kensington section was an act of arson. and the investigation is not just centered on what sparked

the fire in the first place. once firefighters extinguished the blaze they found a body inside. this happened overnight on the 1800 block of east clementine street. authorities initially came for the fire and they found the body. a 28-year-old man on the second floor. fire officials say another person escaped the flames by jumping from the second floor as well. neighbors say the building's vacant and it's often used by squatters. the person who jumped and one firefighter were both taken to the hospital. they are listed in stable condition this afternoon. and as authorities work to determine the cause of the fire, we're also still awaiting officials to identify the victim. sharrie. >> all right, alicia. now to the latest on the police shooting in north philadelphia. we first told you about this story last night as breaking the news. police say the suspect josé gonzalez opened fire on them first. that's when officers fired their guns critically injuring him. odom covering the story for us live at police headquarters with the latest in the investigation. vernon. >> reporter: sharrie, good evening. the suspect identified by police at 30-year-old josé gonzalez remains at temple university hospital tonight still listed in critical condition. he's got a long rap sheet from his hometown camden, new jersey and he was apparently looking for nothing but trouble here across the river. this man josé gonzalez aged 30 remains in critical condition tonight struggling to recover from multiple bullet wounds. he's the man who shot out police yesterday afternoon on north fairhill street. [gunfire] >> reporter: neighbors on the street ran for cover. the gunfire erupted when police responded to a call of a man with a gun. police say they ordered the suspect to drop it but he suddenly opened fire. police brought him down with several shots. gonzalez, however, was down but not out. >> they had to piece of mind and wherewithal to say -- run

over and actually kick that gun away 'cause he was trying to get it again which is actually very scary. tremendous restraint on their part. >> reporter: no officers were hit nor were any innocent bystanders but they say gonzalez's wildfire sent a bullet directly into the home of this fairhill street resident. she had children inside and outside on the sidewalk. >> we were laying in the bed watching tv and then we heard the bullet go through the window and she started screaming and i immediately got up because the kids were outside playing. it was scary. >> the way we live now, crazy. >> reporter: gonzalez who lives in camden is no stranger to law enforcement. 13 arrests in new jersey for drugs assault kidnapping and stalking. in philadelphia he just got out of the city jail. he's charged here with an august 3rd car theft. when he recovers, he'll go right back to jail here to face charges of assault weapons offenses and attempting to murder police officers.

again, brian, gonzalez will be formally arraigned charged and his mug shot taken again when he's officially recovers for an arraignment at the hospital. it was lucky, however, no one was injured or killed in this matterness yesterday in north philadelphia. i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news" at police headquarters in center city. >> all right, vernon, thank you. police in cherry hill are investigating a jewelry store theft. around this time yesterday a man walked into jared jewelers at the town place at garden state park shopping center. at some point he demanded a worker hand over jewels after being inside for about 25 minutes. he left with stolen merchandise and was last seen getting into a gray suv driving toward haddonfield road. investigators have not released any further details just yet but if you recognize this man, you're asked to contact police. a follow-up now to story we first told you about right here last week. philadelphia police say they found four cars stolen from avis car car rentals. the thieves are still on the

run. they stole the cars early friday morning from the avis at philadelphia international airport after punching the gate guard in the face. >> time now for a check of the accuweather forecast. >> quite a difference from yesterday and we mean that in a good way. meteorologist adam joseph outside with the first word. >> yeah, we're much drier here this afternoon and it was expected, took a little long to get some of that sunshine to break through that cloud cover but it is doing that at this hour and the question is where is august? 'cause it hasn't felt like it with rain or without rain. saturday 79 degrees. sunday with that sun and clouds, 78 degrees. yesterday's wet day of 72 and today just 78 so far for a high when our normal should be at 86 degrees t right now there is an 80 or two from millville down to wilmington and the lehigh valley trying to break towards that 80-degree mark and at the shore temperatures there in the mid 70's with the ocean temperature of 73. satellite and radar you can see that stream of high clouds and mid clouds coming in from the south and west but the

leading edge of the clear sky is now puncturing into lancaster county berks county and will continue to move through the area this evening so we'll see those clouds continue to collapse here this evening and also that star cover really taking over after 9 o'clock, temperatures sliding from the mid 70's into the upper 60's already by 11:00 dropping to 63 for a low in center city. in that fact, 50's in the suburbs. we will chat about warmer temperatures more humid air and also the return of rain before the weekend. all those details coming up brian and sharrie in full accuweather forecast. >> adam thank you. the rain that you mentioned yesterday it caused another huge moat to form in margate. the standing water is once again blocking access to some beaches there. residents blame a controversial dunes project which is meant to protect the coast in the wake of super storm sandy. a judge recently ordered the army corps of engineers to temporarily stop the work until they can come up with a.m. better plan. both sides are due back in

court tomorrow when a judge is expected to decide the project's fate. >> well, a tractor-trailer driver is being cited for a crash in newark, delaware. the truck overturned on the ramp from i-95 south to south college avenue around 6:30 this morning. crews had to close the ramp to get the truck upright. 28-year-old corey saunders from baltimore was cited for inattentive driving. police say he took the turn too fast causing the truck to topple over. he was not injured. the roadway finally reopened shortly afternoon today. >> on that note it's time now for a first check of the "action news" traffic report today. >> let's go live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center today. hi matt. >> slowing along at schuylkill expressway. as we look live here in west conshohocken westbound come the headlights, eastbound go the taillights towards the conshohocken curve and it's building volume in both directions here and uneven lanes still as they continue the milling and paving work

during the overnights. some are paved, some are not paved. kind of depends on which lane you're in so watch out for the height differential as you travel along the schuylkill expressway. just starting to see slowing on the eastbound side of the pennsylvania turnpike coming away from norristown out to fort washington. speeds aren't too bad yet still in the low 50's. in dresher watching a crash along susquehanna road near fitzwatertown road. a water main break this afternoon in south philadelphia. it's along south broad at geary and that's just south of the schuylkill expressway, 76, there by the cvs as you head towards the sports complex. you can expect restrictions. construction restrictions on the walt whitman bridge headed into south philadelphia so you're get something slowing there and how about this spot? our good buddy ben, the ben franklin bridge, all westbound lanes are opened this afternoon but eastbound the right lane is out of commission headed into camden. also watching a crash in new castle county, 95 southbound near 295, so some slowing there that's spilling back onto 495 and 295 itself. let's grab the ipad do the

of miles hill. investigators believe he was in the van for more than 11 hours after an employee who was supposed to drop him off at the center in the morning didn't realize he was still inside. when miles never returned home, family called 911 and rushed to the day care. >> man, my niece called and said that she was here and that's who looked in the van and saw him and she says auntie, miles is dead. >> miles would have turned four years old on august 22nd this month. this is an absolute tragedy which could have been prevented. >> the police chief has not yet said what charges the worker will face but he did mention that she has been cooperating. state inspections show the day-care center was not in compliance last month but a rule about logging the pickups and drop-offs of children. >> taylor swift was in court today as a colorado jury heard from the radio dj that she accused of groping her.

david muller took the witness stand in denver. he denies grabbing swift on her backside before a 2013 concert. muller claims in a lawsuit that he was falsely accused. swift counter sued claiming she was sexually assaulted. she is seeking a verdict that awards her one dollar to make an example out of muller. >> a strong earthquake that rocked china this morning has killed at least five people and injured dozens more. video showed chandeliers swinging as people dove for cover under tables. the magnitude 6.5 quake struck near a national park in the south western part of china. the five people killed were all tourists. emergency responders are still surveying the extent of the damage. >> now here's a look at today's closing numbers from wall street. the day ending on a down note for all of the indexes today after having many gains during the day. the dow actually snapping a 10-day winning streak. the dow down more than 30 points, the nasdaq down more

than 13, the s & p 500 down nearly six. this following a stark and sharp message from president trump today in regards to north korea. >> recently dined at the wendy's restaurant in ridley park and you ordered a soda you might want to check your receipt. a software glitch caused the cash registers to add a beverage tax to customer's bills. here's one making the rounds on social media and if you look closely you can see that 45 cents has been added to this check. the problem here is that the surcharge should only be applied in the philadelphia and this wendy's is in delaware county. we heard from the folks at that ridley park wendy's today. they say there was in fact an issue for several hours yesterday. a programming error caused it and has since been corrected. to make good on the mistake the chain is donating the funds to the local boys and girls club. if you have a receipt like this with a beverage surcharge, they will give you

a refund and they will give you a free drink so you guys, it was just a mistake. but it does apply if you live within the city of philadelphia. not in delaware county, though. >> always pays to double-check that receipt. alicia thanks. time for a check of the accuweather forecast. meteorologist adam joseph here. nice change from yesterday. >> yeah and our numbers really below average for this time of the year. kind of a nice break towards the end of the summer season. as we take a look at the weather center and as we look outside live on sky6 over the ben franklin bridge we have some of the high clouds still mixing with some of the cumulus clouds out there but far better than we were yesterday when we had all of that rain. we have dried out and now that sunshine trying to poke back out as well. right now 78 degrees in philadelphia. 79 in allentown, millville 80, wilmington also 80. mid 70's at the shore so all numbers despite even if you're at 80 well below normal. if you're heading up to the steel sacks up into the bethlehem area in parts of the lehigh valley, we got aloe

blacc there at musikfest this evening, mostly clear at 7 o'clock. 73 degrees and really comfy at 10:00 you may want to bring a light jacket with temperatures falling to around 65 degrees. as we look at satellite and radar, that clearing line continues to march in from the north and west here. all the rain being suppressed down to the south and now moving out to sea so we have a really nice setup on the way starting tonight but that clear sky out there and a taste of fall, notice the 50's in the suburbs in fact 55 reading, 57 degrees in lancaster, 60 in wilmington. even in the shore points temperatures around 64 by the time we wake up tomorrow morning. as we go into the day tomorrow, temperatures are going to be very comfortable for this time of year. in fact, 64 degrees to start in the morning and notice this from 7:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. not even a cloud. sunny, beautiful, low humidity and topping off around 82 to 83 degrees between 3 o'clock and 5 o'clock. so, we are now entering a very quiet pattern for tuesday,

wednesday, thursday, sole this is the perfect opportunity to remind you of a pretty unique astronomical event that's going to happen in less than two weeks. that is a total solar eclipse. it's on monday august 20's first. it's going to pass through 12 states from oregon right through south carolina. it will only take 90 minutes to cross the united states and the last time this happened back in 1979. it's basically the orbits of the earth moon and sun. the moon will pull itself right between the direct path of the sun and the earth blocking the sunshine and there's that path of totality from portland through the nation's heartland saint louis through south carolina but here in philadelphia that moon is going to block 80 percent of the sun around 2:30 in the afternoon. and much more on 6abc.com to learn about it. as we look at the four day at 4:00 forecast, 83 tomorrow, the pick of the week, low humidity. still not bad with a few clouds thursday, 85 and then more humid and unsettled late friday going into saturday with some downpours and storms

>> ♪ >> philadelphia city council president darrell clarke and wal-mart are teaming up to help folks stay cool this summer. they handed out free fans to seniors at five locations across the city today. the action cam was at martin luther king older adult center in north philadelphia as donations were handed out there. this is the 12 and consecutive year that clark and wal-mart have teamed up to hold this event. in all, more than 6,000 fans have been donated. >> well, they are the hottest baseball team in south jersey and now the young teenagers are off to play for a spot in the championship game. the atlantic shore team gathered this morning at philadelphia international airport. they're en route to arkansas for the babe ruth 13-year-old world series. the first game is friday against ohio haley. the team is made up of young boys from jersey shore communities and just last week, they clinched the title of midatlantic regional

john. >> reporter: right, this is the 300 block of box elder avenue. a long simmering situation became deadly overnight. police say the victim was shot once, he fell to the ground the defendant allegedly stood over the victim at that point shot him a second time in the head in full view of the victim's wife. many people along this block are grieving tonight. >> you see this on tv all the time but here it's probably -- he was the nicest best guy i ever met in my whole life. >> reporter: brian dougherty is talking about neighbor and friend 51-year-old brooks jennings. authorities say this man, clayton carter another neighbor gunned down jennings at 1:00 a.m. as the two men stood at their shared property line. neighbors say the 51-year-old carter seen here following his arraignment was a quarrel some argumentative man. court records say carter had a history of disputes with multiple neighbors. hi front yard crowded with cars at times and hand lettered anti-trump signs but

the disputes along the block not political but personal. neighbors say fueled apparently by some unknown anger inside carter's head. >> we steered clear of him. we were frightened of him because he's so unpredictable. >> reporter: friends say jennings tried to reach out to carter years ago. >> lived next do tour him. >> at first he would invite him to things and everything. >> that's not his nature to let a feud -- like to him it's like hey, why can't we just get along, you know, and unfortunately he met someone who didn't feel the same way. >> reporter: but jennings friends say carter rebuffed the olive branch. to date carter says the shooting was self-defense. >> my client said he was under attack by a knife wielding assailant. >> reporter: he says mr. jennings had a knife. >> that's correct. >> reporter: well, the prosecution rejects the idea that this was in any way justified. carter is charged with a number of crimes including first degree murder because of that charge, he is not

eligible for bail in pennsylvania. live in west goshen township, john rawlins channel6 "action news." brian. >> all right, john, thank you. it took police and firefighters roughly 30 minutes to free a person trapped upside down in a retention pond. officials say the car went off the 600 block of east basin road in new castle delaware around 2 o'clock this afternoon. fortunately there was very little water in the pond allowing rescuers to get to the driver quickly. once free, the person was rushed to christiana hospital by medical helicopter. we're still waiting to hear what made the driver lose control and how they're doing. >> federal state and local agencies have converged on a small street in gloucester county all because of some type of hazmat situation. chopper6 hd was over berkeley road in mantua today. police have been in that area since 1:30 this afternoon investigating some type of hazardous material inside a home there. officials won't reveal what it is but they did confirm there are no injuries.

berkeley road remains closed between bridgeton pike and harrison avenue. well, bucks county prosecutors have filed a slew of new charges against hulmeville funeral director david frost. police say the 52-year-old stole a total of $297,000 from 54 different clients who paid him in advance for that prearranged funerals. faust allegedly forged one woman's death certificate so he could spend the $8,700 that she gave him to cover her future arrangements. authorities say that woman is actually still alive. she and others contacted faust funeral home to check the status of their accounts after his first arrest on fraud charges back in april. >> people living in one atlantic county apartment complex can breathe easier now that a rather stinky problem has been dealt with. this was the scene along the 100 block of exton avenue in somers point last night. a garbage truck had dumped

mounds of trash in the parking lot of mystic apartments leaving a stench behind. this morning though a different story. waste management hired an environmental cleanup crew to pick up all that garbage. this time the only thing that was left behind was the substance that soaks up any remaining odors there. >> residents must be happy about that. >> thrilled i'd say. >> let's also hope they're happy about how the weather is going today. >> meteorologist adam joseph joining us with the accuweather word. hopefully it's a good one. >> nothing too stinky. the pick of the week coming here tomorrow but for today we've been dealing with that sunshine trying to return, the clouds early this morning but all that rain from yesterday is long gone. so as we look at the current temperatures right now in philadelphia, our temperatures coming in in the upper 70's. that is it right now. 79 degrees or so in philadelphia. live on sky6 over the platt bridge, you can see there as folks continue to work towards the city and away from i-95. some sunshine breaking out here and if you're heading westbound in the next hour or two, you may have some sun

glare that you're dealing with. temperature-wise 78 right now in the city of philadelphia. that's well below the normal of 86 degrees. raleigh just 69. chicago 83. 80 cincinnati so even as you look to the west, the pacific as well as the northern plains as well as the deep south, we're not looking at any widespread or even one 90-degree mark on that board so we are going to stay below normal as we go through the next seven days but as i talked about some really nice weather the next two days. and we'll chat about that but then it does turn unsettled as we head towards the weekend sharrie. we'll have all those changes with the seven day coming up in just a little bit. >> adam thank you. there was a major show of support today for philadelphia families in law enforcement who suffered the ultimate loss. the philadelphia fraternal order of police received more than $24,000. it was awarded during the special check presentation at the chickie's and pete's in south philadelphia. the money was raised during the crab fries for heroes eve

70 july and that set a new record. the funds will be used specifically to assist families of fallen philadelphia police officers. a south jersey mother stands accused of a terrible crime allegedly taking her son out to the woods and leaving him to fend for himself. >> ♪ >> london police appealing to the public for help in finding the man behind a shocking assault. this is video of the incident. watch the top of your screen here. you can see the jogger push a woman into the path of an oncoming bus. investigators say it appears that that act was deliberate as the man can be seen pushing the woman with both arms. incredibly the bus driver reacted very quickly swerving around her. she was not injured. police say this happened three months ago but they haven't found the man so they're releasing the video with hopes that someone will recognize him.

>> cleanup is under way in salisbury maryland after a small tornado swept through there yesterday. surveillance video from a bar shows the storm's violent winds tossing a car around like a toy. from another angle you can see debris rain down on that very same parking lot. a number of buildings, homes and cars were also damaged but no one was hurt. the national weather service says the tornado was an ef1 with 105 miles per hour winds. a powerful surge of flash fh flooding was caught on camera in utah. a family was just wrapping up their vacation when they saw the water rushing down a mountain after recent heavy rains. police had to close a nearby state highway after it was torn apart by a debris flow full of rocks and mud. authorities say the conditions have been made worse by a massive wildfire that burned through the area last month. >> ♪ >> on health check at 4 o'clock today, young people who regularly drink those energy drinks could be setting themselves up for future

substance abuse. more than a thousand college freshmen were tracked for three years as sophomores and juniors energy drink user consumed more alcohol and were more like to have used drugs or abused prescription drugs. studies with animals have shown that highly caffeinated drinks prime teenaged brains for later drug use. well, the key to getting kids to eat more veggies is how you serve them. so say researchers at beacon university in australia. they found little ones were more likely to eat a whole carrot versus a little of a diced one. they say that's in line with past research showing that larger unit sizes increase consumption. most kids only eat a fraction of the veggies they should get every day. >> all about control right. big talkers now and air bnb is now canceling reservations and deactivating accounts for some people making reservations in one town in virginia. you see, this is a flier that has been circulating on social

cheetos puns this afternoon. good afternoon brian and sharrie. couple vehicles went crunch here unfortunately along the schuylkill expressway westbound between montgomery drive and the roosevelt boulevard. that vehicle is actually facing sideways. you can see police and penndot on the scene and we actually had a couple fire trucks a little bit ago but it looks like they have pulled away. small fuel spill there on the roadway so they've thrown some sand down. bottom line is right lane is out of commission as you come westbound out of center city on the schuylkill so you're seeing some slowing heading toward the boulevard. i think i'd use the mlk drive instead. kelly drive had reports of a minor crash so i think mlk west river is the way to go for your ride home this afternoon. had a water main break in south philadelphia earlier along south broad at geary. that's their by the cvs just off the schuylkill expressway so watch out for the restrictions there. but our crash in dresher montgomery county along susquehanna near fitzwatertown has cleared out and we have one in the lehigh valley on 22 eastbound. sounds like that's gone too which is good news if you're heading over to musikfest.
