making news in america this morning, tensions between the u.s. and north korea hit a new level. hear president trump's stern warning to the north and the country's response threatening a missile strike on a u.s. territory. we have at reaction from around the world coming in throughout the night. the threat of north korean missiles puts american missile defense systems to the test. some high-tech weaponry on alert right now. we have team coverage of this new crisis including a look at what the pentagon has at the ready. breaking overnight a technology issue is being blamed for significant delays at one of the country's busiest airports. southwest airlines is working through the night on that problem. >> those security chips on your credit cards, they seem like a good idea but what if they were to fall off and fall into the wrong hands? a new warning this morning.

a good wednesday morning to you all. we begin with breaking news. reaction from around the world after president trump's explosive warning to north korea. >> the president vowed to unleash fire and fury in the face of more threats. hours later north korea threatened to take aim at the u.s. territory of guam. the war of words escalating following reports that kim jong-un can now fit a nuclear warhead in a long-range missile. >> we have team coverage with abc's arlette saenz but we'll start with off abc's erielle reshef in washington. erielle. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. the president mincing no words. his warning coming as intelligence officials learn the north koreans may have crossed a dangerous line. president trump lashing out at north korea. >> north korea best not make any more threats to the united states. they will be met with fire and

fury like the world has never seen. >> reporter: an unprecedented war of words with the rogue nation. >> fury and, frankly, power. >> reporter: as the north promises fierce retaliation for crippling u.n. security council sanctions. kim jong-un contemplating medium and long-range ballistic missile strikes on guam threatening enveloping fire on the yours territory home to several key military installations. the governor there urging this message overnight attempting to reassure constituents. >> i'm working with homeland security, the rear admiral and the united states to ensure our safety. >> reporter: and world leaders reacting swiftly. the japanese and south korean government standing with the u.s. saying all options remain on the table. the escalating tensions made all the more alarming amid new revelations about north korea's nuclear capability. abc news confirming u.s. intelligence analysts believe the north can now produce a

miniaturized nuclear warhead. >> this is the most momentous day in his nuclear program. >> reporter: the news coming days after north korea test-fired a long-range ballistic missile capable of hitting the u.s. mainland. and u.s. intelligence officials now believe north korea may have as many as 60 nuclear weapons, far more than once thought. diane, kendis. >> an alarming thick for many in the u.s. thank you. senator john mccain was critical of the president's threats saying he overstates things. >> mccain was interviewed by a radio station in phoenix where he's still undergoing chemotherapy for brain cancer and suggested the president's response could have been worse but advised that great leaders don't make threats unless they're ready to act. >> i take exception to the president's comments because you got to be sure that you can do what you say you're going to do. >> no reaction from secretary of state rex tillerson or u.n.

ambassador nikki haley both working to ease tensions diplomatically while turning up the pressure on north korea. >> residents of guam 2,000 miles away from north korea appear to be a little rattled by the threat but officials there say they're well protected. >> as kim jong-un works to perfect more far reach reaching weapons. abc's arlette saenz has more on this. arlette, how worried do we need to be? >> reporter: good morning. north korea's production of a miniature nuclear warhead is another sign of how quickly the regime's nuclear program is accelerating. the question now, how can the u.s. stop a north korean missile from hitting the country? north korea's successful production of a miniaturized warhead to fit atop one of its missiles shows another sign the regime's nuclear program is moving faster than predicted. intelligence analysts have determined a north korean missile could reach at least the west coast but may be capable of going as far as new york and washington, d.c.

one option to interrupt a missile heading towards the u.s., something called a ground-based interceptor. the u.s. currently has 36 of these in place at bases in alaska and california. if u.s. radars were able to detect a missile launch by kim jong-un, missiles could be fired off into space and collide with the nuclear warhead. it's essentially like a bullet hitting a bullet and would stop it from strikes the u.s. back in may the u.s. successfully intercepted an intercontinental ballistic missile during a test of a ground-based intercept system in california. the success rate for those interceptors is around 50% but it's still one of the military's top options to prevent a missile from striking the u.s. diane and kendis. >> all right, arlette saenz, thank you. president trump is also taking on a tough battle here at home vowing to fight the deadlyopioid epidemic. the president held a briefing along with health secretary tom price promising to step up drug prosecutions, but he did not declare a national emergency over the opioid crisis despite a

recommendation to do so from a commission he created. meanwhile, the trump campaign has turned over thousands of documents to the senate committee investigating russian election meddling and possible collusion. negotiations for donald trump jr. and paul manafort to testify in public are ongoing. following breaking news from overseas where a manhunt is under way in france after a car struck several french soldiers. at least six soldiers were hit by the vehicle in a paris suburb where they patrolled. the injuries are not life-threatening. the mayor of that suburb moments ago calling this incident a deliberate attack. france is still under a state of emergency due to recent terror attacks. we'll have the very latest on "good morning america." also breaking overnight rescuers are searching for survivors after a deadly earthquake in southwestern china. cameras captured the moment the quake struck. at least 13 people were killed and nearly 200 injured in the 6.5 quake. search and rescue efforts made difficult by a lack of power and

phone networks in that area. now, several tourists are among those victim, earlier this morning another earthquake rattled china. it was a 6.3 quake that struck the northwest region. this one near kazakhstan. at least three injuries reported. back here at home a united airlines flight made an emergency landing in newark, new jersey. the flight headed from paris or to paris from chicago was reportedly diverted due to a shattered cockpit window. and there's no word yet on what caused that window to break. other airline news, this time out of l.a.x. a computer issue causing flight delays on southwest airline flights in los angeles where the airline operates more than 130 daily flights. dozens of passengers were complaining overnight about the delays on social media. southwest is blaming it on a technology issue and apologized to passengers in a new statement. now let's take a look at your weather.

torrential rain as cross the south dumped up to 8 inches of rain on houston triggering flash flooding and dramatic water rescues including a father and two sons pushed and pulled to safety by some good samaritans. further south hurricane warnings have been posted for parts of eastern mexico now that tropical storm franklin has passed over the yucatan peninsula. franklin could strengthen into a hurricane before making a second landfall early tomorrow morning. well, still ahead right here potential problems with those new credit card security systems. plus, one of the most well-known hotels in the world is now facing some shocking allegations. we have new details from inside the plaza. inside the house where the president grew up. now you can stay

well, cell phone store owner and his son are getting some props this morning after fighting back during an armed robbery at their shop in texas. when one suspect jumped over the counter the son grabbed the man and then his dad helped. they even used that robber to shield themselves from the other. luckily in this incident no one hurt. of course, police do not advise fighting back. >> absolutely not. both of them had guns and they fought back. they're lucky. to missouri now and the hunt for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a rookie cop. it is now over. ian mccarthy was arrested after seen walking down a highway. he is charged with murder in the death of officer gary michael during a traffic stop over the weekend. >> an iconic new york hotel is facing accusations of endorsing a so-called rape culture. six current and former staffers have filed a lawsuit against the

plaza hotel saying they've been subjected to sexual harassment and assault and accuse the hotel for punishing them for complaining. the hotel denies the charges and says such behavior would never be tolerated. new high-tech chips on credit and debit cards that were supposed to make them more secure. >> experts say they're causing a brand-new hazard. here's abc's gio benitez. >> reporter: chip transactions are meant to make our cards more secure and in most kays they do. what if that tiny piece of technology goes missing. experts warn it can fall out. this happened to reporter jason knowles of our abc station wls. >> i didn't realize for days because i was still allowed to use my card at many places with the magnetic stripe. when i called chase they told me i had to get a brand-new card with an entirely new number. they said if someone found the chip on the ground, they could use it on another card. >> reporter: when it comes to losing your chip chase says it

talking about the picture? who is connecting with the jury? >> mueller is suing swift for $3 million blaming her for getting him fired from his job and blackballed from the industry. utility as cross the country are taking steps to avoid power grid problems during the upcoming solar eclipse. that is going to cast a 70-mile-wide shadow of the moon across the country from oregon to south carolina. experts say that will cause a massive loss of solar power production and huge surge once the shadow passes. many are planning to unplug their solar rays and go with natural gas power during the eclipse. u.s. airlines are bumping passengers at a lower rate in at least two decades. a new report finds that just one in every 19,000 passengers was kicked off an overbooked flight in the first six months of this year. that, by the way, the lowest rate since the government
