we begin with the new threat from north korea to launch rockets near a u.s. territory. >> take a look at one of three american military bases on guam located roughly 2100 miles from the korean peninsula there. now, the north in a bold statement says it's working on an attack plan for the waters near in island. >> but japan's defense minister today said his country could shoot down any missiles fired toward the u.s. territory. >> abc's erielle reshef joins us now from washington with more on north korea's latest threat. erielle, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and diane. north korea now putting a time line on its threats warning it could strike guam by the middle of this month. president trump's tough talk on north korea echoing around the world. >> north korea best not make any more threats to the united states. they will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. >> reporter: abc news learning those statements caught even some of the president's own inner circle off guard. the language not vetted by his

national security team. >> fury and, frankly, power. >> reporter: overnight pyongyang calling it a load of nonsense. the korean army saying sound dialogue is not possible with a guy bereft of reason and only absolute force can work on him doubling down on its previous threat to attack guam adding it could strike as early as mid-august. the u.s. territory home to critical military bases and 160,000 americans just 2,000 miles from the mainland. >> we encourage everyone to go through their lives and live them like you would do any other day. >> reporter: american allies like australia condemning the north's aggressive threats. >> our collective strategy has not changed and that is to bring pressure to bear on north korea through diplomatic and economic means, to force it to change its behavior. >> reporter: but some world leaders urging president trump to dial it back. >> look, i think the comments

are not helpful in an environment that's very tense. >> reporter: secretary of state rex tillerson trying to tamp down tensions trying to explain that president trump was only trying to use language that the north korean regime would understand. >> rex tillerson made a critical stop in guam yesterday. erielle, thank you. one question on many people's minds this morning, continues to be whether the verbal conflict could lead to actual military action. >> abc's martha raddatz reports the military has necessary plans in place. >> reporter: it is important to say war is the last thing anyone at the pentagon wants to see happen but pacific command has been doing updated war planning and they're certainly focusing on defensive measures as well but if those tough sanctions imposed on north korea do not work. if kim jong-un continues to make progress on a nuclear tipped missile, a senior official told me that in 6 to 12 months the administration will have to decide whether some sort of preemptive strike or some other

measure should be undertaken to stop kim. >> and martha will have much more on "good morning america" on the north korean tensions a little later on today. a spokesman for paul manafort confirms the home of the former trump campaign chairman was raided by the fbi. a source tells abc news manafort was woken up by armed fbi agents executing a search warrant at his home in virginia. they were seizing documents and other materials as part of the special counsel's investigation into russian election meddling. manafort's spokesman said mr. manafort has consistently cooperated with law enforcement and other serious inquiries and did so on this occasion, as well. also from the d.c. area an unarmed russian air force jet like this one has flown over several u.s. government sites that are usually closed to air traffic. it flew over the pentagon, the capitol, cia headquarters as well yesterday before then flying to bedminster, new jersey, where president trump is on his working vacation. the flight was in accordance

with a 15-year-old treaty in which the russian and american militaries are allowed to observe sites in the other's country. american diplomats in cuba seemed to have been targeted with some kind of sound weapon. they suffered unexplained hearing losses that are being attributed to covert sonic devices apparently secretly deployed. this happened at the u.s. embassy as well as other america evacuate american facilities in havana. the u.s. in the meantime, has expelled two cuban diplomats from the u.s. in retaliation. french president emmanuel macron is urging vigilance after an ambush outside paris that's under investigation as a possible terror attack. one man is in custody after police say he deliberately slammed his bmw into a group of soldiers injuring six of them and then sped away. the driver led police on a five-hour chase which ended when they cornered him and opened fire. in this end of the world hurricane franklin made landfall in the gulf coast of mexico. franklin slammed into the coastline as a category 1damage

damaging winds and torrential rain expected to trigger widespread flooding and landslides. now, for a closer look at thursday's forecast. good morning, after make its second landfall early on this morning, franklin later on this morning will be weakening but still producing some very heavy rainfall. we are concerned about flash flooding, epipen here throughout central portions of veracruz where wind damage will be a possibility toward the coastline. it will be coming down throughout the day but could see over a foot of rainfall. mudslides again possible. i'm justin povick with your accuweather forecast. a protester took a creative approach to trying to get a message to president trump just

president trump is facing his first lawsuit for that tweet announcing transgender people would be barred from serving in the military. five active duty transgender service members claim the ban is unconstitutional and violates their rights. they're asking that the ban not be enforced and so far the pentagon has not made any changes to military policy. republican senator ron johnson has apologized to colleague john mccain for a comment regarding mccain's health care vote. johnson was giving a radio interview when he was asked about mccain's thumb's down vote which spelled the end of the republican efforts to repeal and replace obamacare. >> he has a brain tumor right now. that vote occurred at 1:30 in the morning. some of that might have factored in. >> really? >> that was the radio host reacting there. mccain's spokesman responded saying it is bizarre and deeply unfortunate that senator johnson would question the judgment of a colleague and friend. senator mccain has been very open and clear about the his

corbett. the father and daughter each sentenced to the maximum 20 to 25 years. martins and his daughter had always maintained they acted in self-defense. as the defense claimed investigators missed key evidence that they say showed a fight for survival. investigators testifying that the physical evidence specifically, the blood spatter, proved corbett suffered fatal blows to the head after he was already down. the weapons, a baseball bat and a brick. linzie janis, abc news, lexington, north carolina. and cameras in nevada caught a heated moment at a city council meeting. not that kind of heated moment. that's a woman's purse erupt nothing flames while it was on her lap. people started screaming. you see the woman jump up. fortunately, the city's top firefighter was at the meeting and put out that fire.
