"action news" reporter jeff chirico has the full story. >> reporter: shattered car windows and shell casings mark the spot where gunfire erupted outside the target on bustleton avenue. chopper6 over the scene. choppers inside heard arguing just before several shots were fired. >> they were yelling at each other at first and then the security guard, as soon as he went outside that's when we heard the shots. >> we looked up and seen all these people started running towards us and all the workers came by and were like everybody to the back of the store. as we got to the back of the store i walked over and we seen the door and all you seen was the guy who got shocked -- shot and he fell to the knees. >> reporter: police dispatched the s.w.a.t. team to evacuate the store. police say the shooter had fled. >> s.w.a.t. officers go in and clear the target. we don't know if anyone ran in

or out. detectives will be looking at video and things like that. >> reporter: after waiting for an hour outside employees were allowed back into the store and shoppers were individually questioned before being allowed to return to their cars. meanwhile police are asking for the public's help in finding the shooter. >> we got red hyundai sonata 2009 make of the vehicle black male black shirt with a white emblem on it gold chain blue jeans height about five-seven to five-eight. >> and there is breaking news. another shooting in north philadelphia. in this case we know officers opened fire. this happened just about an hour ago. chopper6 was over the scene along the 3100 block of darien street. police are still trying to sort out the details but we know that one person was shot. it is not clear at this point if the gunfire came from a police officer's gun. we do know no officers were injured. we'll continue to monitor this situation and bring you an update as soon as we can.

firefighters quickly got the upper hand on a blaze that consumed an auto repair shop in the crescentville section of philadelphia. chopper6 was over the scene as flames shot out of the vema auto care gist after just after 3:30 this afternoon. the shop is on the 5500 block of tabor avenue. the fire reached two alarms before firefighters were able to get the blaze under control. fortunately no injuries were reported. with the start of the school year less than a month away a philadelphia charter school seems to be in survival mode. the question it is fair to ask the question will the khepera charter school be able to open when the bell rings. "action news" reporter vernon odom is live outside school district headquarters in spring garden. vernon, what about that, you've got the story. >> reporter: maybe a brief answer for you, jim. indeed that charter school may open up next month but the question is, and will be for how long.

this is the ninth and sedgley building when the khepera charter school grades k through eight has called home for years but now the landlord wants to evict them as the charter key 88d in 2004 continues to drown in more than a million dollars in red ink owing to multiple vendors. all classes were shut down a week early in june without warning or ceremony. teachers tell me they resigned en masse and found new teaching posts elsewhere. the khepera charter school is running three paychecks behind. we're shielding the identities of the teachers. >> i was supposed to be evicted a couple weeks ago. i almost lost my new car. my daughter also taught here so that's two of us in the same home with no income for the same amount of time. i went to get my medication and found out i didn't have any medical coverage. >> as far as like me and other teachers who have been struggling to put groceries on the table. getting evicted, cars, we have to like call our car companies 'cause we're late on payments. >> reporter: we were unable

to contact anyone on the khepera board of trustees or its administration today for comment. charter schools here are funded by taxpayers' money funneled through the school district but the school district has relatively little control under their management. under way now are public hearings designed to revoke khepera's charter on grounds to make payments to employee retirement funds and poor overall classroom stores. >> 140 out of 140. >> still enrolling students knowing there's a chance they won't complete the school year which is really unfair. >> reporter: or start the school year. >> they say that they are. >> reporter: jim, these public hearings will be running through early september. then it will be up to the keeley form commission to vote up or down on whether khepera keeps its charter or they have to close down i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news." outside school district headquarters on north broad. >> vernon thank you. at least one person was

severely injured in a crash in south harrison township gloucester county. multiple cars were caught up in the accident near the intersection of monroeville and commissioner's roads. this happened at noon today. first responders closed the road to the investigation. the preliminary hearing in the case of the deadly hazing at penn state continued today with defense attorneys now targeting the fraternity's adviser. they're asking a judge top call kim breen to testify. they want to know what bream a football trainer who lived in the house knew about the alcohol fueled night that led to the death of 19-year-old timothy piazza. the prosecutors say the tactic is a smoke screen. today's hearing for 16 former fraternity brothers will determine if there is enough evidence to send the case to trial. heavy machinery remained parked in a margate today despite a federal court ruling yesterday that the controversial dunes project

could resume. the army corps of engineers says that work should pick up again next week. margate officials took the issue to state court today asking a judge to order engineers to delay the project until after labor day. the judge only ordered new jersey officials to ask the feds for that delay. the city says the project is damaging the shore line and causing ponding of polluted storm water. a driver stopped at a traffic light, was shot multiple times by another driver in the summerdale section of philadelphia. the shooting happened at 11:30 last night. it happened at the intersection of summerdale and east cheltenham avenues. witnesses tell police they saw a vehicle pull up to the 24-year-old victim's volvo and fire into the car. the gunman got away with a white vehicle, possibly a buick. right now police don't have a motive. a delaware valley motorist got an unintended paint job

this morning as he drove over the walt whitman bridge. and he says he can't be the only one. "action news" reporter bob brooks is live on the new jersey side of the bridge. bob, what's the problem here? >> reporter: well, jim, there is a paint job going on at the walt whitman bridge. behind me you can clearly see it. case in point you see the suspension cables there in white. they are priming this. well, the man says that primer got on his car. we spoke with officials they acknowledged the problem and they say they're ready to fix it. let's take a look. the owner of this black lexus says he drove to work today and his car became covered with speckles of white paint. needless to say he wasn't happy. he wants to remain anonymous but called "action news" to get the word out about where he says it happened. that was costing the walt whitman bridge -- crossing the walt whitman bridge around 10:00 a.m. this morning. >> noticed they were spray painting open air spray painting on the bridge. >> reporter: there is in fact a priming project going on. the delaware river port authority says crews are spray painting the suspension cables. you can clearly see that happening.

before the problem gets worst owner of the lexus says he doesn't want this happening to anyone else. >> that was my main concern that the general public is aware that their car may have been damaged. >> reporter: we were able to speak with the ceo of the port authority john hanson by phone. he acknowledges the fact there might have been some overspray and some paint might have missed the mark. the reason for that. >> somehow the containment was breached not sure how probably strong gust of wind. >> reporter: but says there's good news. this won't create long term damage for anyone's vehicle that might have come into contact with the paint. >> the paint that's being used is an acrylic dry drop paint. by the time it goes eight to 10 feet it is essentially specs of paint dust. >> reporter: he knows this is an inconvenience and wants to apologize and guarantee the port authority will rectify anyone impacted. >> if they contact us we will make sure that they're eatery imbursted if they have it done on their own or that somebody

will come out to wherever they are and detail it and remove in dust for them. >> reporter: another live look at the walt whitman bridge. again, the port authority says they're ready to rectify any situation. the owner of that black lexus says he's been dealing with them throughout the day and he is satisfied with that. for now reporting live in gloucester city, bob brooks, channel6 "action news." jim. >> bob, thank you. this morning they held a ceremonial groundbreaking on an improvement project at the trenton area soup kitchen or task. the $1.6 million plan includes renovations to the existing building and a 3600 square foot addition. official work will start in september. task has reached 60 percent of its fundraising goal. everybody happy about that. aside from providing food to the community task offers adult education, life skills classes and arts programs. coming up on "action news" tonight the eagles acquire a much needed cornerback giving up receiver jordan matthews in the process.

germantown. this carries an important message. the students created pieces that explored diversity and inclusiveness. for example, a colorful bench is made without a separation in the middle so anybody who needs a place to sleep can just lie down and get some rest. philadelphia city councilman kenyatta johnson helped cut the ribbon this afternoon on new basketball courts at smith playground in south philadelphia. the my courts are made possible by the make the world better foundation which was founded by former philadelphia eagle connor barwin. this is all part of a project to spruce up local parks and rec centers through the city. >> ♪ and new at 6:00 tonight new jersey correspondent nora muchanic has the story of a young boy who is so happy to be a big cheese with the wildwoods city fire department. in fact it may be the happiest experience of his young life. here's nora's report. >> reporter: it was a dream come true for four-year-old jackson mitchell who has been

sworn in as an honorary chief of the wildwood city fire department. he's always wanted to be a firefighter. doesn't it scare you to maybe be a firefighter? no? >> 'cause i love firefighters. >> reporter: jackson who is autistic and has a number of health problems suffers from hereditary disease that will soon rob him of his eyesight. >> if his eyesight stays where it is now he'll never be able to be a firefighter. >> reporter: jackson is wood's first class of fire cadets. he learned about the equipment and skills firefighters need to have including water rescue >> he's been doing everything. nothing has slowed him down. whatever medically he has he does not let that slow him down. >> jackson is legally blind and in little more than a year he will lose all of his sight. his parents are hoping experiences like this will live in his mind's eye. >> let him experience as much as he can so he knows what

this move surprised a lot of people because of who the birds are giving up but they have depth at receiver. you have to give up something to get something. ronald darby fits the bill from the bills. the corner has a ton of upside. he's young only in his third year out of florida state started 29 games for buffalo since they drafted him in the second round in 2015. his rookie season he was even named the defensive rookie of the year by one publication. the birds give up jordan matthews and a third round pick in next year's draft. jordan the eagles top receiver the past two years but his role would have decreased with the addition of torrey smith and alshon jeff frees. what the team will probably miss the most he was a class act. great locker room guy. here's what gm howie rosen said about pulling the trigger. >> this isn't one where, you know, you're feeling like you're celebrating and doing a dance because you're giving up a good player and a good pick but in this league you're not going to be able to get anything unless you give something but it hurts when people you care about leave. i mean, the hardest part about

packers score last night. derek barnett was very impressive in his debut registering two sacks. here's big news in the nfc east. the cowboys losing their running back ezekial elliott suspended for six games. the nfl lead rusher last year handed the suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy after an investigation that began more than a year ago. it's a domestic violence against one of his exgirlfriends. the attorney didn't press charges because of conflicting information. elliott is planning to appeal. eagles do not play the cowboys until after he will be reinstated. phillies and mets play game two of a four game set on emoji t-shirt night. last night's game would have been the sad emoji. they were shut out 10 to zip. is there anything markelle fultz cannot do? look at the sixers rookie during a basketball card promo shoot today. it's not a trick. it's real. what are you talking about.

>> weekend accuweather forecast looks pretty good. >> second half of the weekend looks good its a 50-50 split. if you like the rain you're going to like tomorrow. listen, let's take a look. let's go to the weather center here. dark ominous clouds overhead here, the ben franklin bridge. the humidity is coming up. some areas already starting to see the rainfall especially up towards the lehigh valley but things will be changing again the second half of the weekend but right now as we take a look at storm tracker6 live double scan, you can see some of that heavy rainfall that is now lifting north of allentown, also easton and bethlehem. the rain is just about to end there for musikfest. you got the band perry playing at 7:00 p.m. should be mainly dry once this lifts out. doesn't mean another downpour could pop up but at least the heaviest steadiest is heading up north and east of the poconos and moving away from the area.

this is just the infant stages of a very unsettled period as we head into the beginning of the weekend. as we take a look at the temperatures right now, it is rain cooled especially parts of berks county, up into the lehigh valley, temperatures have fallen into the lower 70's. but it's not a comfortable 71 with that higher humidity. 80 right now philadelphia. we hit a high today of 84 degrees. and you can see upper 70's down to the south. again as those clouds continue to move in, those temperatures are coming down just a little bit. we have a cold front to the west. that cold front comes through tomorrow evening so until it arrives, we have the clouds, we have the high humidity, the southerly wind and the chance for these scattered thunderstorms to pop at times. in fact around midnight you can still see some drifting even around philadelphia. they could try to sneak in before the phillies game ends here this evening. even up in the lehigh valley you get a break but more could be arriving late this evening. even in the wee hours of tomorrow morning, a couple of hits of some scattered storms. 8 o'clock tomorrow morning you can see a lot of clouds. 1 o'clock again scattered through the area. it's not a washout tomorrow but just unsettled at times

and then the front starts to come in during the evening hours to the north and west and that's when we could even see a gusty thunderstorm pass through. in fact, there's an isolated risk across the entire area tomorrow afternoon and evening that any of the storms that pop could contain some very strong gusty winds and even the possibility of some small hail. then behind it, this is the pick of the weekend. on sunday the front is off the coast. this big high pressure comes in to push everything to the east, 84 degrees. the sun returns and the humidity drops. for shore tomorrow it's kind of an indoor day. you can get out at times. it will be cloudy but just watch for those pop-up downpours and thunderstorms definitely not sitting on the sand type of day. sunday is though clouds, 81 a moderate risk for rip currents and a very warm ocean of 77 degrees. as we look at the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast here, temperatures will be in the 80's as we go through pretty much the next seven days t a little bit below
