before 2 o'clock this afternoon when police received a call about the home invasion. that's what they're calling this at this time and also a robbery. it happened in queen village in the 700 block of south front street. an 84-year-old woman inside was tied up with belts while police say the robber stole money from her. there's only a vague description at this point of that robber, a white male 30 years old wearing dark pants. now, back out here life again we're told that the robber did flee in a back alley. we're told that that alley is behind the home. of course we're still waiting for details about that suspect description. for now reporting live in queen village annie mccormick channel6 "action news." back to you. >> annie, thank you. violence in virginia with the country still reeling from the deadly weekend in charlottesville president trump took the podium to denounce hate again. this time calling out white

supremacists as criminals and thugs. the president is addressing the race fueled violence ass the judge orders the alleged attacker live without bail. elizabeth hur live. the suspect only answered yes or no questions from the judge. still no motive in this case but we now know local on federal investigations are under way to get to the bottom of this. 20-year-old james alex fields jr. appearing before a judge via video is ordered to remain in jail and his bond denied charged with the murder of heather hi and a hit-and-run in charlottesville could face additional federal charges. >> racism is evil. >> reporter: president donald trump responding to critics who blasted him for not initially denouncing the white nationalists and today announced a civil rights investigation is under way.

abc learning the fbi is now reviewing the suspect's background to determine if the attack was a hate crime or domestic terrorism. his mother is in disbelief after learning of his involvement over the weekend. >> i didn't know it was white supremacist. i thought hit something to do with trump. >> reporter: but others who knew fields in the past say they are not surprised. >> he was vocal about his ideas. he proclaimed himself as a nazi and as a white supremacist. it wasn't a secret. >> reporter: were mean in charlottesville. >> we're starting to get back on our feet. >> reporter: love always wins, that's a message from the community members leaving flowers and messages for the 32-year-old victim killed in the car crash. as for that suspect he's due back in court august 25th. reporting live from charlottesville, virginia, i'm elizabeth hur for channel6 "action news." alicia. >> elizabeth thank you. and today we're hearing from the mother of the woman who

died during those riots in charlottesville. 32-year-old heather heyer was killed during what some are calling an act of domestic terrorism. her mother tells abc news she is going to carry her daughter's mission and memory forward. heather was struck by that car that plowed into the group of counter protesters during the white supremacist rally. her mother says she's extremely proud of her daughter for standing up in what she believed in. >> i'm extremely proud of my daughter. i'm extremely proud that she stood for what she believed in, that she not only gave mouth to it but she gave heart to it, she gave soul to it and now she's given her life to it. i love her and i miss her so, so much but i'm going to make her death worth something. >> she actually died for something that she believed in. she was a fighter. she believed in equality and peace and love. >> reporter: so that's blare whose life was spared by her

to gun violence at the very same address. >> he was a great person. i mean, he was so full of life. if he could give you his socks off his feet, he would. i mean, he just had this energy that was unbelievable. >> police have not said how the couple died but they do believe the apartment had been ransacked. "action news"'s sarah bloomquist will have more on the investigation tonight at 5:00ly. >> a teenager is in critical condition right now after being shot at a block party in the mantua section of philadelphia. the shooting sent three other people to the hospital and left dozens of bullets littering that neighborhood. "action news"'s walter perez live this afternoon at the scene with the very latest on the search for the gunman. walter. >> reporter: hey, brian, you know, officers from the 16th district were actually nearby when the shooting occurred because they were working security detail at that block party last night. despite that, dozens of shots rang out injuring four and rattling an entire neighborhood. the shooting unfolded a bit

past midnight near the intersection of 39 and mellon streets. a block party was winding down nearby. we spoke with a young mother who doesn't want to be identified who says she was returning home with her 12-year-old daughter when the gunfire erupted. >> i had just came in the house me and my baby. as soon as i get in the kitchen all i hear is all these gunshots. i didn't know whether to run up the steps or what to do but i know they were real close. >> reporter: by the time it was over, four people all in their late teens or early 20's had been shot. one is listed in critical condition at penn presbyterian hospital. during the ensuing investigation, police recovered 31 spent shell casings from the scene. we spoke with neighbors here who say it's frustrating that they can't feel safe in the neighborhood they call home. >> it needs to stop before it elevates to a higher level of crime. >> there's a lack of security. nobody's doing nothing about the gun problem. it's a gun problem and the world knows it. it's a gun problem. >> reporter: meanwhile the

young mother we spoke with says she can only wonder if things will ever improve for her children. >> when it's time for them to go home they need to go home. they killing each other for nothing. they jealous of each other. like we won't have a generation gap 'cause and i don't understand why are they killing each other like that. >> reporter: now, there are several surveillance cameras in this neighborhood across the area but investigators have not found any video that helps them with the investigation so anyone with any information is asked to call police. reporting live from mantua, walter perez channel6 "action news." sharrie. >> walter, thank you. there are pictures and now video of a man defacing a local house of worship and police want to know who he is. watch as this man approaches the camera, then makes an obscene gesture. he then turns and begins urinating on the building. this happened early sunday morning just after midnight at the congregation beth solomon. the synagogue is in northeast philadelphia. and there have been a couple of other incidents at this

same synagogue in recent months. police want to talk to this man and say he could be facing charges of vandalism. >> very clear picture there so i suspect they'll get him in no time. it is a gray afternoon out there but very much on the warm side. >> let's get the very latest from meteorologist adam joseph who is outside for us today. hey, adam. >> yeah, those clouds have raced in. we did see sunshine early on today but those clouds being replaced by higher humidity, that's also sparking a couple showers around the area. as we look at storm tracker6 live double scan you can see locally to the west we're dealing with a few light showers anywhere from the northeast extension and central parts of montgomery county, chester county, delaware county, northern new castle county and approaching philadelphia. again, no the really -- not really wetting the roads all that much but needing to use that windshield wiper once or twice as they go through. chris if you can hear me hit the play button so we can show you what else is going on here this evening as well as we move forward with those

temperatures 'cause those temperatures have been in the 80's here this afternoon. right now 81 degrees in philadelphia. 78 in washington. 78 in pittsburgh. 79 in charleston, west virginia and near 80 in buffalo as well as syracuse so we're not dealing with tremendous summer heat for this point in the year in august and in fact the evening planner we kind of hover around 80 for the next couple hours and then we'll drop into the mid 70's between eight and 10 o'clock and 72 at 11 o'clock with those showers continuing to drift in and some can turn a little bit heavier as we go later into those evening hours. we will chat about a little bit of an unsettled day tomorrow. that humidity spikes up and we'll let you know if we're back into the 90's in that seven-day forecast and as i cue a few drops are now falling on my head. i'll head inside for the rest of the forecast coming up in a little bit. >> we'll get you an umbrella. adam thanks. time to talk about the traffic report. >> let's go live to gina gannon. >> hi, brian and sharrie. really nice day overall if you're traveling on the roads.

it's pretty quiet. our delays are out there but really nothing significant as of yet. let's take a look at the wide metro map. we have red and slow speeds but mostly on the northbound side of 95 we always have that delay and also don't forget we have construction on the westbound side of the walt whitman bridge out there blocking one lane but looks like you're in the green so delay free as of right now. the vine crowded along with the schuylkill expressway. 6 miles per hour. i want to he should you the schuylkill expressway. look at this gridlock you're facing if you're traveling on the westbound side of 76 right at the roosevelt boulevard it is bumper to bumper. you can see between the vine and the blue route about 20 minutes. this right now is our biggest delay we're seeing on your major roads but on the eastbound side looks like you're good to go. once you go from the roosevelt boulevard out to belmont you will hit the brakes and then again right around the conshohocken curve. let's show you the vine street expressway i like what i'm seeing. as you can see that eastbound side hanging on delay free right there and typically we don't say at this time of the hour but that that westbound side heavy from 24 up through

>> ♪ >> in cancun, mexico today authorities raided 31 resorts and nightclubs in search of tainted alcohol. so far they have confiscated up to 10,000 gallons of illegal and counterfeit alcohol from tourist hot spots. two bars so far have been shut down including a lobby bar where 21-year-old abbey connor of wisconsin allegedly drank tainted alcohol and later died

while on a family vacation back in january. her family believes she drank alcohol that was contaminated with other chemicals before drowning in the pool. she was found face down there in the pool at the ibero starry sort in play playa dell karma. so, regulators say they have turned up illicit and counterfeit alcohol coming from a manufacturer that was supplying several tourist hot spots there in cancun and the popular fat tuesday bar there has also temporarily been shut down. so a big raid there in mexico, brian. >> alicia thank you. all eyes remain focused on north korea today one day before it has said it plans to launch an attack on gaum. america's top general arrived in south korea today urging a peaceful resolution to the deepening nuclear standoff between the north and the united states. general joseph dunford made clear that diplomacy is the

preferred solution but military might on the table should north korea follow through on its threats. >> i don't know if they're going to do what they say they're going to do but we're not complacent about it. we're paying attention to everything they say and do and we're preparing accordingly. >> authorities insist all of the united states including the territory of gaum is safe. despite that residents in gaum are taking precautions and hoping that negotiations are successful. >> here's a look at today's closing numbers from wall street and all indexes closing sharply higher on the day. the dow up more than 136 points. the nasdaq up more than 83. the s & p 500 posting its best day of the summer so far, up more than 24.5 points on the day. an ohio police officer is on paid leave while he's being investigated for his actions during a violent arrest. dashcam and cell phone video shows saturday's incident in which a euclid officers punched a man who where was on

the ground. police say the confrontation began when the 25-year-old identified as richard hubbard was pulled over for a traffic violation. he was ordered out of the car and that's when police say he ignored commands to turn around and begin physically then resisting. the ensuing struggle lasted three minutes. during that time an unidentified woman is seen and heard yelling stop. hubbard was eventually handcuffed when more officers arrived. he was booked on charges of driving with a suspended license and resisting arrest. >> heavy flooding and mudslides overwhelming villages in sierra leone. officials in the west african nation say they found 200 bodies so far and the coroner is struggling to keep up. video shows brown water rushing through the streets. many poorer areas of that country are low lying and have had bad drainage systems making the situation that much worse during the rainy season. >> flooding also inundating nepal as rivers overflow their banks. police say 80 people have died there, dozens more are

missing. even more have had to leave their homes behind. earlier today locals used elephants to help rescue hundreds of tourists from a jungle safari park that had become flooded. >> tons of science research is on its way to the international space station. a space-x rocket carrying the materials blasted off from cape canaveral this afternoon. the cargo is mainly experiments but nasa packed in ice cream also. extra freezer space is filled with vanilla chocolate and birthday cake flavors. the delivery will get to the space station on thursday. i'm sure the ice cream is for the people that are up there. >> they deserve a little treat. >> they should enjoy that. >> we got some rain falling right now. >> yeah, a couple showers here and there kind of drifting through very light but get a couple drops on the lens here on the evening rush for some of us as we take a look outside right now on sky6 over the commodore barry bridge here in chester, this is the location there along the commodore barry, 322 that are

seeing a couple of those light raindrops falling as the clouds have taken over most of the area and temperatures once again staying at or below normal. the tenth day in a row now where temperatures have been at or below normal. right now 81 degrees in philadelphia f are 80 in trenton. 81 millville. upper 70's at the shore and if you look to the north and west, you can see it's a whole lot cooler. allentown, reading, lancaster that is because the clouds raced in there first, kind of capping off that sunshine trying to warm it in our northwestern suburbs. as we go into the day tomorrow, clouds kind of winning out over that sunshine. again, as you go from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. it is very humid tomorrow as well and notice temperatures well below normal, only touching at or above 80 degrees at times and there could be a scattered thunderstorm and still a chance for some pops of sun tomorrow as well so tomorrow's not a complete washout but again, a day where the clouds try to win over that sunshine and we'll see some storms firing up. as we look at storm tracker6 live double scan you can see

in and around the heart of the delaware valley is where we have some of those light sprinkles passing through and barely dampen, the ground in most location. it's a little ripple of energy in the upper part of the atmosphere traveling from west virginia straight across maryland into the heart of our region here and we'll continue to see these waves of energy kind of drift through here, so some showers will fire up at any time tonight. could even be a heavier downpour as that humidity comes up. 66 allentown, 70 philadelphia, 68 in dover and right around 70 at the shore. future tracker at 10 o'clock tonight, again, hit or miss some of those downpours and showers. as you can see they kind of continue to pull from the southwest north and east 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning in the afternoon tomorrow you see again hit or miss variety here with a lot of clouds at 4:30 and some could contain some heavy rainfall. still looking at tropical storm gert. winds 60 miles an hour sustained to the north and east of the bahamas. it is west of bermuda and is no threat to make landfall along the east coast.

you can see all the models here every line keeps it way out to sea this week but the thing we'll have to watch the next two days is rip currents along the shore and some heavy surf so definitely want to obey the lifeguards this week at the shore. as we look at the four day at 4:00 forecast, 85 tomorrow, some sunshine but a lot of clouds with the chance of a downpour or scattered thunderstorm. much brighter but hotter on wednesday, up to 90 degrees. very warm, humid thursday with an isolated storm late, 86. and it could be a stormy end to the week on friday with temperatures hovering near 90 degrees. we'll take a look at that weekend ahead in the seven-day forecast in the next half hour. >> august making a comeback. >> yeah. >> adam thank you. the power house producer behind grey's anatomy and scandal will soon start making shows for netflix. the streaming service inked a deal with shonda rhymes. new scripts will be made only for netflix. rhymes wrote in a statement

science questions. the governor says he's responding directly to criticism he heard during school tours across the state. the education association is applauding the move. for many schools to full testing days -- two full testing days will be eliminated. >> youngsters in camden got an important lesson, water safety today. students at the boys and girls club jumped into the pool to brush up on their swimming. after going over lessons in the water they learned cpr from first responders. the camp put on by the zach foundation teaches these life saving skills to children ages five to nine. emergency personnel from camden and gloucester counties are also helping out. camp continues through the end of the week. >> more children will have the chance to see their dreams come true. all thanks to the danny e dennis golf out in bucks county. the event raises money for the make-a-wish foundation for terminally ill children. over the past 14 years the

12312 dash two. said to be thousands of times darker than regular sunglasses. >> i knew a lady who's husband looked at an eclipse on went mind. so i'm very conscious that you need these glasses. >> reporter: the center line of the total eclipse will traverse the u.s. from oregon to south carolina. normal if we look up to the sun, our body reacts to protect our eyes from damage. >> we squint our eyes, people. >> reporter: would react. >> yeah, react then limit the light going in. >> reporter: but she says with lower light levels of a partial eclipse those reflexes can be overcome. that's trouble. >> it can do damage in as little as 90 seconds of staring at the sun. >> reporter: which is why it's critical to have the right shades for direct viewing. there are other options on the nasa web site there is this animated instruction for taking a cereal box and modifying it into a pin hole viewer. some have of talked of using cell phones to capture the eclipse.

the doctor thinks that would be bad idea without the proper shades. >> i would be a little bit wary. >> reporter: because you're still facing the sun. >> exactly. >> reporter: so, bottom line you really do need lenses like these. they're, as i say very, very dark. where to find them however is not so easy. some eye doctors have them still. a lot have already given them i was away. some of the big box stores, lowes wal-mart and best buy they have stocked them at one time. we called around to about a dozen of them today. we couldn't find a one, though some thought they might get a restock around wednesday. you really have to call around. you can go to our web site. you can go a link we have there with the american astronomical society. they can give you tips of someline retailers that might be able to get them to you quickly. in the meantime if you can't find them then on the day of go to a place like this. this is the wynnefield library. it's one of a number of places here in the philadelphia area they're going to have viewing parties. these folks can probably help you once they set up. they're also doing it at the franklin institute and a number of other places.

>> in other news this afternoon president donald trump has now said that racism is evil couldn't depping by name the kkk, neo nazis and white supremacists at criminals and thugs. this comes of course after the deadly race fueled weekend clashes in charlottesville, virginia. president trump spoke at the white house today after meeting with attorney general jeff sessions and fbi director christopher wray about the violence. in his remarks, the president also called for unity. in the meantime the man who was arrested for ramming his car into a crowd of peaceful demonstrators killing a woman went before a judge today. >> police are investigating a shooting where someone may have been shot because of careless handling of a handgun. it was around 4:00 a.m. on the ramp from the betsy ross bridge off of i-95 in bridesburg. one person was taken to the hospital. police pointed out this was not the result of road rage and that the entire incident took place inside of a vehicle. no word yet on the condition of the person who was shot.

the u.s. marshals have arrested a man wanted in connection to two shootings in philadelphia. 31-year-old xavier gutierrez mendes was taken into custody this morning. police say he shot two men during two different incidents spanning a month. one was june 8th on south fifth street. the other was on july 22nd on bellmawr street. >> many woke up to sunny skies this morning but clouds moved in this afternoon bringing along some rain as well. >> let's get the latest from meteorologist adam joseph who is keeping an eye and tracking whatever is in the area. >> it's unsettled at times this afternoon, some showers are popping up and it will remain that way as we go through tuesday. another thing you're probably noticing is the humidity. that is increasing as well. and as we look at storm tracker6 live right now locally especially right around philadelphia parts of delaware county and over the river into camden and gloucester counties, not heavy rain but there are some raindrops falling as folks are leaving work here but this quick little shower will continue to move along. but it's the first of many as

sky6 live in the weather center here overlooking camden. you can see a little haze in the atmosphere. the humidity is coming up and we also have some rain falling in this area. they're very light showers. but again dealing with some raindrops in the heart of the delaware valley. we'll have those scattered showers and thunderstorms pretty much over the next 24 hours. the humidity feeling that oppressive feel coming back into the forecast for more than one day. and again, a couple of those 90's you will see in the seven-day forecast as well. with the clouds raced in first today, the north and west, that's where it's the cool left right now in the mid and upper 70's. we did see some sun philadelphia especially to the south and east and that popped those numbers to 80 or so degrees this afternoon but again, these numbers not climbing all that much anymore with the clouds thickening up and some of that rain moving in. here it is, this one little batch of showers now about to end in philadelphia working offer to the east but wet drive across the betsy ross bridge right now, the ben franklin bridge as well as the walt whitman bridge, along

route 70, moorestown, new jersey, again very light showers. this is really the only concentration in the area right now that continues to spread from the west to the east but moving pretty quickly and again, not dropping heavy rain. satellite and radar, it's all a part of some energy that continues to ripple way down to the south and east. you can see there's little hits and green here and there all the way back into kentucky, so this flow will continue tonight into the day on tuesday. so, some showers at times, even a downpour overnight tonight. temperatures stay pretty warm. 66 to 70 for that overnight low. we have a boundary down to the south and that's what's helping throw more tropical air our way. we have tropical storm gert expected to become a hurricane off the coast, stays off the coast, 85 tomorrow, hazy sunshine, very humid with a stray downpour or thunderstorm as we go throughout the day and then as we get into wednesday, cold front still to our north and we'll kind of get rid of the clouds here middle of the week wednesday, lots of sun but hot and humid as those temperatures go back
