ongoing fallout from saturday's racial protest and violence in charlottesville, virginia. much of america is recoiling from the images of the klan members and neo nazis clashing with counter protesters. in court today james alex fields jr. was denied bail. fields appeared by video monitor from jail where he is being detained on charges of second degree murder and other offenses. meanwhile some are now calling emancipation park heather heyer park after the woman killed when fields allegedly plowed into a crowd of counter protesters. at the white house today, perhaps responding to criticism that he hadn't been nearly specific enough in his response to the violence, president trump had another statement where he did call out individual hate groups. >> racism is evil. and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs including the kkk, neo

nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as americans. >> meanwhile the ceo of merck kenneth frazier who was born in north philadelphia, resigned from president trump's manufacturing council today citing "a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and extremism." world news tonight with david muir will have much more on the violence in virginia including more on president trump's statement and the continuing fallout. you can watch that following our broadcast at 6:30 tonight. philadelphia police are trying to find the bandit who staged a home invasion in queen village this afternoon and tied up an 84-year-old woman. "action news" reporter annie mccormick is live in the 700 block of south front street and annie, what's the full story there? >> reporter: well, jim, police and also friends of the 84-year-old victim say that she is in good spirits

tonight. she was even able to walk around with detectives through the crime scene that is her home. at this hour they are still looking for the person responsible. >> he had her tied up in the basement. she untied herself and went up and yelled fire. >> reporter: a friend of the brave and quick thinking 84-year-old home invasion victim described the terrifying moments the victim relayed to her how she untied herself. police say a robber restrained her arms and legs with a belt and dog leash after breaking into a queen village home this afternoon. he demanded money. >> if somebody came up behind her, this 84-year-old precious like a kitty cart smart as a whip and, you know attacked her. >> reporter: the call came into police just before 2:00 reporting a home invasion and robbery in the 700 block of south front street. police say the robber stole cash then fled down an alley. detectives and police scoured the block this afternoon. the victim luckily wall -- was

not injured. philadelphia police say they're beefing up patrol in this neighborhood. jim, this is still early in the investigation. they're trying to figure out how that robber did that enter the home. they're also looking for surveillance video in the area and at this hour they only have a vague description, a white male in his 30's with a thin build wearing black pants. of course if you have any information, 215-686-tips is the number to call. for now reporting live in queen village annie mccormick channel6 "action news." jim, back to you. >> annie, thank you. philadelphia police plus state and federal law men are on the scene of a suspected marijuana growing operation in west philadelphia. chopper6 was over the scene along the 4800 block of cedar avenue. "action news" has learned that officers went inside and found a large amount of plants and growing equipment. this was the scene last night after police found the bodies of a man and woman inside their apartment. it happened in the 1300 block

of federal street in south philadelphia. "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist is live at police headquarters tonight. sarah, what have police learned about this and what about the search for the killer? >> reporter: jim, philadelphia police are still waiting on the medical examiner to rule on the cause of death. so, it's unclear at this point if authorities are making progress in this investigation after notifying family members of the murders this afternoon police did release the victims' identities. >> i mean he just had this energy that was unbelievable. >> reporter: family members of 50-year-old candido gonzalez described him as a single dad doing his best for his young son with the help of his girlfriend 23-year-old caitlyn jaje. >> she was a wonderful person that came into his life about a year ago and she became a stepmother to his son. like she had great energy, too and they just tried. they tried. but on this day god wanted them and he had a better plan for them. >> reporter: late last night police were called to the

couple's apartment in the 1300 block of federal street in south philadelphia after a family member discovered the victims unconscious. they were in separate rooms apparently at salted -- assaulted and they had something tied around their necks. there were no signs of forced entry. neighbors awoke to police activity and then saw the medical examiner removing the bodies from the residence. >> i saw the coroner. i said wow. >> reporter: gonzalez's son was not at home but his mother was upstairs. family members say she didn't hear anything. they added that a few years ago her other son was shot and killed on the steps of the very same address. >> all we can do is just ask for prayers and for the -- anybody that may have seen something to come forward. >> reporter: again, many details yet to be released including why this couple might be targeted. live at police headquarters, i'm sarah bloomquist channel6 "action news." jim. >> sarah, thank you. a new jersey man has been accused of killing his

girlfriend in hamilton mercer county. 38-year-old daniel torres jr. was arrested yesterday after 31-year-old jennifer beer was shot to death in the couple's apartment on south olden avenue. police also found a dead dog inside the home. torres is facing charges of murder and animal cruelty. philadelphia police are still looking for the person who shot four men near a large block party in mantua. it happened near 39th and mellon streets just after 11 o'clock last night. a 24-year-old remains in critical condition. the three other victims an 18-year-old and two 21-year-olds are expected to survive. police are using very clear surveillance images in hopes of finding this man. he committed the unspeakable act of urinating on the exterior walls of the synagogue congregation beth solomon at 198 tomlinson road in the somerton section of philadelphia. brooks is live at northeast detectives. bob, what's the story there? >> reporter: well, jim, there's noplace for something like this. so the story is that find this guy, find him quick and put him behind bars. the goal today, show this man face. get it seen by as many people as possible. the philadelphia police say he targeted a local synagogue by urinating on it early sunday morning. the incident was call caught on tape. the suspect's identity isn't hidden rather, the still frames taken from the footage is very clear. what's also clear, the police department's stance on anti-semitic attacks. >> we have a zero tolerance for any kind of hate. >> reporter: it was 12:30 a.m. yesterday. police say a man in his 20's walks right up to the security camera. he makes no effort to hide his face. he makes an obscene gesture and proceeds to urinate on the walls. he jumps into this white bmw and takes off. it happened at the congregation beth solomon on tomlinson road. neighbors are disgusted. >> that's just horrible. that's a disgrace to do that to a synagogue to do that to

>> senator chris coons is in wilmington celebrating how far the city's west end neighborhood has come. he had a chance to mingle with residents while the youngest ones enjoyed some water ice. children from the west end performed an original song coons says there's been a lot of progress in housing and development in this neighborhood over the past number of years. it has been nearly 38 years since the last total solar eclipse. if you don't want to miss the show you have to make sure that you're wearing the right eye protection and that they are the real deal. >> so can i. >> reporter: these kids among those with the proper kind of eclipse shades given out today at the brandywine hundred library in wilmington. they were gone in a couple hours. these shades meeting international iso standards said to be thousands of times darker than regular sunglasses. >> i knew a lady who's husband looked at an eclipse and went blind so i'm very conscious. >> reporter: it's not clear how many eclipse glasses sold recently do not meet proper standards. amazon reaching out to customers who bought deficient merchandise. the doctor says consumers should go to reliable sources like eye doctors or libraries. >> there are some authorized retailers toys r us wal-mart. you want to make sure outplaces they have the iso code meaning that it is approved and it is legitimate so -- to avoid any counterfeits. >> reporter: there are other so-called indirect ways to view the eclipse. on the nasa web site this

practice with the bills. buffalo visits the birds on thursday for the second preseason game. there's no chance matthews will appear in that one. the bills are hopeful he'll be ready for their season opener in four weeks. eagles cornerbacks study this video. that is giants receiver odell beckham jr. making a ridiculous catch in practice t1 hand snagged it out of midair over the defender. the birds host beckham and the giants in week three. to baseball the phillies begin a seven game road trip tonight first stop san diego. eickhoff gets the start. he was sharp in his last outing against atlanta. how about little league softball world series highlights. delaware hannah chambers gets her glove stuck in the fence. little help here. delaware puts up a three spot in the fourth inning. olivia with this single. bear delaware wins 11 to two to advance to tomorrow's semifinals. looking good for those young ladies. >> absolutely. we'll keep track.

families with critically ill children spent their afternoon together enjoying the outdoors today. the casey cares foundation hosted a private party at smith memorial playground in fairmount park. really it was a chance for the kids to have some fun and their parents to meet other families dealing with similar issues. the smith memorial playground features the 16,000 square foot playhouse with special slides for children in wheelchairs. >> blank how would you like to earn four times gas reward points?

temperatures are on the cool side for august standards. philadelphia 79 degrees down from our high of 82 which is 4 degrees below normal. allentown 76. cape may 77. and wilmington currently 79 degrees. so, storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we do have a little bit of activity but these are all real light scattered showers, nothing heavy, nothing severe, no thunder and what this is, it's a boundary layer. it's like a warm front that's moving in and as it does, it does bring us an increase in humidity. so, tonight a few showers, with the clouds and winds out of the southwest it's going to be a lot warmer than last night. 66 degrees in the suburbs. about 70 degrees for center city and future tracker showing tomorrow plenty of clouds to start the day and we will see some scattered showers around and as we head into the afternoon, we could get some thunderstorms developing, especially i-95 and areas south and east into the afternoon hours. so, somewhat unsettled and then wednesday, this is when

90-degree weather returns. going to feel like august again with a high around 90 degrees. hot and humid. this boundary will move through on thursday bringing us a chance for thunderstorms and also kicking out gert to sea. tropical storm gert right now between bermuda and the southeast coast and if you look at this infrared satellite you can see an eye is starting to form. this storm is really strengthening. it likely will become a hurricane but there's really good consensus on all the computer models this will be pushed out to sea. no threat to land. however the next few days there will be rough surf and rip currents down the shore. do be careful tomorrow. some sunshine with that risk of rip currents 78 degrees atlantic city, ocean city 79, rehoboth and bethany 80 degrees. that ocean temperature pretty mild, 76 but listen to the lifeguards tomorrow and on wednesday. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow could see some sunshine late in the day but also the possibility of some thunderstorms very
