>> we do say good morning on a busy friday. we'll start with that breaking news and there has been another arrest in the terror attacks in spain. >> authorities say the suspect was captured about 50 miles north of barcelona. the arrest came hours after a raid in the resort city of cambrils where five suspected terrorists were killed. those suspects rammed a police vehicle before hitting a group of pedestrians while wearing fake bomb belts. six people were hurt. >> officials are kemging the cambrils incident to the attack in barcelona. a moment of silence there today honors the 13 people killed and more than 100 others injured when a van sped into crowds of pedestrians. this morning we know an american is among the victims. >> the world is showing its support both one world trade center in new york and paris' eiffel tower are lit in honor of barcelona. the barcelona attack left a horrific scene on the streets of spain, second largest city. >> a live look at the la rambla

district less than 24 hours ago filled with victims, first responders and police trying to find the people responsible. this normally a huge bustling part of spain. abc's james longman has more. >> reporter: an all too familiar scene with terror striking another major european city. the dead and injured lining the streets. first responders racing to the scene while others flee from the carnage. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: at tackers using an increasingly common tactic, turing a vehicle into a weapon of slaughter. the assault left 13 dead and more than 100 injured. south of barcelona police killed another group of alleged terrorists in what they're calling a related attack. the attack began just before 5:00 p.m. on la rambla an iconic boulevard and popular tourist destination in the heart of barcelona. >> it happened in an instant. it was this white van just shooting just driving on the road. >> reporter: mowing down

pedestrians at what witnesses guessed was 50 miles an hour. >> when i saw it he was traveling at high speed. there were supreme flying into the air. [ speaking a foreign language [ speaking a foreign language ] teixeira i saw a ton of people screaming. seeing all the bodies by la rambla, it was like, i don't know, horrific. >> reporter: the van careening down this path for more than a thousand feet before coming to a halt. the front smashed. we are right at the point where that mounted the sidewalk. you can see debris there on the floor, discarded clothes. it came up here all the way down this street. people taking shelter running into stores and restaurants. this woman and her family found sanctuary in a shoe store. >> i saw the people running and we stay in this store. >> reporter: police on foot guns drawn combing the streets in search of the assailants. >> translator: this is clearly a terrorist attack intended to

kill as many people as possible. >> reporter: i'm james longman in barcelona. >> isis is claiming responsibility for the attack and learning more about one of the three suspects. >> a man from morocco accused of renting the van that was used in the attack. here's abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross. >> reporter: police are calling the 28-year-old moroccan born driss oukabir one of three suspected terrorists whose activities they are right now trying to unravel. authorities say he recently traveled to morocco arriving back in spain last sunday and then rented the van used in the attack but police say he was not behind the while. driss oukabir's facebook page shows hip as a skinny kid at the beach listening to rap music and recently shared this anti-semitic video in praise of nazis described as true heroes. the barcelona attack comes straight out of the isis playbook. the terrorist group has urged its followers to carry out similar vehicle attacks even

providing details on the kinds of trucks to use. >> as isis suffers more defeats in iraq and syria, we can only expect to see more attacks. >> reporter: isis took responsibility for the deadly barcelona attack calling those involved soldiers of the islamic state. >> that report, of course, from brian ross and there was worldwide condemnation of the attack in barcelona including from president trump. >> but another tweet from the president is also sparking some controversy. abc's emily rau joins us from washington with the details on that. good morning, emily. >> reporter: good morning, diane and kendis. president trump's first tweet about the attack on barcelona, spain, was pretty standard. it said, quote, the united states condemns the terror attack in barcelona, spain, and will do whatever is necessary to help. be tough and strong, we love you. but it's his second tweet that raised plenty of eyebrows. the president reviving a claim he often made on the campaign trail saying study what general pershing of the united states did to terrorists when caught. there was no more radical

islamic terror for 35 years. now, that is a reference to a widely debunked story that in the early 1900s pershing had muslim rebels in the philippines killed with bullets dipped in pig's blood. it's controversial statements like that making some of his republican allies uneasy. republican senator from tennessee bob corker, for example, offering some harsh criticism yesterday. >> the president has not yet -- has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful. >> we're at a point where there needs to be radical changes take place at the white house itself. it has to happen. >> i think our president needs to take stock of the role that he plays in our nation and move beyond himself, move way beyond

several new developments in our breaking news, police say they've killed five suspects in a second attack in spain. the suspects used a car to plow down pedestrians in the seaside town of cambrils. of course, this follows that van attack that took place in the heart of barcelona yesterday and a third suspect was captured overnight just outside of the city of barcelona. now we've seen the same strategy of using vehicles as weapons in other european cities over the past year. abc news contributor and former fbi counterterrorism official steve gomez says it's a sign of a growing problem. >> isis essentially learned what al qaeda was failing in trying to get these attacks to be done in the u.s. and throughout europe. they realized that these terrorists were being caught because they were traveling internationally and they were communicating with different people in other countries. the other side to it from the
