lightning, heavy rainfall and we have severe thunderstorm warnings in effect until 4:30 for the next half hour for most of berks county, allentown, lehigh valley. winds near 60 miles an hour and large hail with this storm as it's moving to the east at about 25 miles an hour and you can see the most severe part of this storm right now is over downtown reading. 205 lightning strikes in the last 15 minutes so you're seeing constant flashes and that constant roar of thunder. heaviest rain between 222, route 661 here as you look north of reading and here's the hail swath with this storm as we change storm tracker6 live mode and you can see the brighter pinks hail moving across blue marsh to downtown reading and five points as it heads off to the east. as we look at the severe thunderstorm watches in effect for the entire viewing area until 9 o'clock meaning of the

storms as they pass through could turn severe, even down towards the shore later this evening. in addition because the humidity is so high we're really bringing out the atmosphere so a flash flood watch in effect until midnight during the evening rush so this broken line of storms will be passing through, a major impact on the evening rush. it should hit 95 between 5 o'clock and 6 o'clock and at the shore between 8 o'clock and 9 o'clock. we'll continue to monitor the radar and i'll have the latest coming up in about 10 to 12 minutes, rick and that's the accuweather forecast. >> this reminder stay on top of the weather any time on your phone or tablet bleat using the 6abc app. >> now to breaking news from the nation's capitol where president trump's chief strategist steve bannon is out. this is the fourth major resignation from the trump administration in recent weeks. >> that's right. bannon was a key adviser in trump's election campaign.

abc's jen name norman -- janai norman as the latest. >> reporter: the white house confirms bannon is out. it's the fourth major shakeup of the trump administration in as many weeks. now with the exception of mike pence all of the president's original men are out. in the last month first press secretary sean spicer resigned then chief of staff reince preibus. anthony scaramucci resigned as communications director after 10 days and now steve bannon, days after president trump wouldn't commit to saying whether he has confidence in bannon. >> he's a good man. he is not a racist, i can tell you that. he's a good person. he actually gets very unfair press in that regard. we'll see what happens with mr. bannon. >> reporter: many close to trump had been privately urging him in recent weeks to fire bannon who also fought

rampage in finland about 90 miles west of hell sin key. police detained him but they are still looking for possible accomplices. security is now stepped up across that country. >> in barcelona this afternoon a memorial continues to grow for the victim of the terror attack in the heart of the city. this as secretary of state rex tillerson confirms that an american citizen is among the 13 dead. the manhunt for suspects is ramping up in spain as details emerge. police officials say they would only tell us this, they've issued an order for the arrest of four suspects in connection with the attacks. again, 13 people are confirmed dead and hundreds were injured after a white van going 50 miles an hour mode down a crowd. some american survivors share

happened yesterday at a hindu temple on main street in robbinsville. a 16-year-old boy from hatfield montgomery county was volunteering on a construction project inside the building when he fell approximately 45 feet. the victim was taken to a hospital in hamilton where he died about an hour later. police say the fall appears to have been a tragic accident. a delaware man is under arrest. 25-year-old rydal mills was arrested last night on east 23rd street. police were investigating drug activity reported in the area when they confronted mills they say he tried to run. during the ensuing struggle police say one officer suffered cuts and strained his foot. mills was also treated for minor injuries and then booked on charges of drug possession and resisting arrest. >> the galaxy is creating a lot of buzz. come monday, millions will pause and take a moment to marvel at the sky for the solar eclipse. trish hartman live at the

franklin institute where the scientific world is gearing up for a massive watch party there. trish, the safest way to watch the eclipse is with those special glasses but they aren't the easiest things to get your hands o look at you, you've got a pair. >> reporter: these are the coveted glasses, shar regional rail seems like everyone wants them. not many places can keep them in stock. that means many hopeful eclipse watchers are in a scramble. they hoped to score glasses to watch the eclipse but came away empty handed. >> we wanted to to be by and see if we could get a pair but unfortunately it's a hot item today. >> reporter: managers say they've given out 3300 glasses over the past few days and won't be getting any more. the coveted iso compliance glasses will allow users to look at the sun during monday's solar eclipse. we did find some at the franklin institute where dozens of people waited in line. 3500 eclipse glasses were

>> ♪ >> today workers power washed the words black power off the statue of a former philadelphia mayor and police commissioner. the bronze statue of frank rizzo was vandalized once again late last night with those words and also this, the black community should be their own police. all of it in white spray paint. this is the second time in two days the statue outside the municipal services building on j.f.k. has been targeted. critics have been calling for this statue to come down. critics claim rizzo was racist and made police brutality the

accepted norm. rizzo's son is defending his father saying he was a fair person who treated people equally regardless of race. mayor jim kenney says he's never been a fan of the statue but he did condemn the defacing of it. >> never any excuse for vandalism, never any excuse for any kind of action like that and people who do that should be arrested. >> police have arrested a suspect and they just identified him as 40-year-old wally ramen facing several charges including criminal mischief. this news just into our news room and all of this comes as public and private memorials and monuments across the country have been vandalized following those clashes in charlottesville. rick. >> all right, alicia, thank you. a virginia state trooper killed in last saturday's helicopter crash outside of charlottesville was laid to rest. a public service was held for trooper berke bates.

the copter was providing video before it broke off to lend support for motorcade for virginia governor terry mcauliffe. there was no distress signal before it crashed on saturday. the governor spoke at today's service. the funeral for the helicopter pilot is tomorrow. >> boston deploying hundreds of officers for tomorrow's free speech rally and planned counterprotest. >> we have to support those who are targeted and we have to stand together in unity and we ask everyone to help us promote peace. >> the boston free speech coalition who is organizing this says the rally has nothing to do with white nationalism and they are not affiliated with the organizers of last week's rally in virginia. many of -- organizers of a counterprotest expect 20,000 to 30,000 people to join them on the 2-mile march.

>> a fire at philadelphia international airport caused a bit of a scare today for some of our "action news" viewers. we received a number of phone calls from concerned residents after they spotted smoke from a burning plane. firefighters say they started the blaze on purpose as part of a live burn training exercise to practice their response in case of a real emergency. the fire department tells us the drill was a big success. >> here's a look at today's closing numbers from wall street. a mixed bag on this friday as they close out on the week. the dow down more than 40 points nasdaq up near and seven and a half while the s & p down marginally on this friday. we told you about the special glasses you'll need to safely enjoy the solar eclipse. today we learned how to make a pin hole camera using a shoe box aluminum foil and a white index card. you can start by cutting a

in effect until 4:30 p.m. for parts of berks county, the lehigh valley. in this zone we have winds near 60 miles an hour with some of the storms and hail the size of quarters as well especially just to the north of downtown reading. and because the storm is moving at 25 miles an hour, it is releasing a lot of water in a short amount of time. we have a flash flood warning for basically all of berks county where they've seen a couple of inches of rain and an additional two to 3 inches are like. if you encounter any roads covered by water do not try to drive through. find different route. manatawny the storm moving east at 20 miles per hour heading towards valley, boyertown, barto and even another nasty storm on its heels to the south of west and reading. we have a severe thunderstorm warning for allentown, bethlehem, eight lightning

strikes a lot of heavy rainfall and could be a little bit of hail with this as it heads towards hellertown, spring town a lightning bolt well ahead of this storm. that's why if you start to hear a rumble of thunder get indoors. the lightning can discharge before the storm arrives. as we take a wider view you can see this line extends through lancaster and all that has to push to the east into a very moisture rich atmosphere. these dewpoints are some of the highest we've seen all rear round. you barely ever crack 80 degrees in our region. 77 in philadelphia, meaning there's a lot of water vapor in the atmosphere cooking up those heat indies well over 100 degrees to kind of charge these storms as they move from the west. the line is in the form of a cold front coming through. philadelphia, trenton, wilmington, 6 o'clock this evening. then along the coast as we get towards 8:00 8:30 tonight, then it moves out, we start to dry out overnight but it does

how he managed to save two rottweilers from the schuylkill. >> an accuweather alert for the entire delaware valley. it may look clear across center city right now but that will soon change thanks to the radar image you're seeing on the right here. storms are firing up across the area as we speak and some of them could be severe. >> in fact much of the region is under some type of watch or warning. >> let's get the latest from meteorologist adam joseph with a look at the track and timing of these storms as they push closer adam. >> they'll move right into philadelphia near the heart or the tail end of the rush hour. bad timing. dealing with sunshine breaking out and dewpoints and humidity really spiking here this afternoon as a cold front is passing through. as we look at storm tracker6 live you can see that nasty line of severe storms in parts of lancaster county as well as berks county, in fact downtown reading getting hit a second time in the last 25 minutes and that extends all the way up into the lehigh valley,

nearly 500 lightning strikes in the last 15 minutes in these storms. as we take a look right now live from the pagoda cam in reading they're getting whacked with very heavy rain reducing visibility. there's a flash flood warning in effect for all of berks county because inches of rain has already fallen this afternoon and we have numerous severe thunderstorm warnings. these are now until 5:15 p.m. for southern parts of berks county, northern chester county, northwestern montgomery county and a little slice of bucks county near perkasie. winds near 60 miles an hour with these storms and the possibility of hail up to 1 inch in diameter. so, some lightning safety for it. when you hear undergo in doors. we've seen on the radar that these lightning strikes are actually being discharged ahead of the storm. before it starts raining until it's completely dark you still can get hit by a lightning bolt. they can strike 10 miles away

from the actual storm itself so the highest risk here this evening is that dangerous did you have individual lightning. those torrential downpours because of the high humidity, strong winds and large hail isolated tornadoes are low but we have had seen some signatures on the radar showing some upper level rotation so we'll continue to monitor these storms this evening and then we'll talk about a beautiful weekend and give you that many forecast for next week which includes the partial eclipse on monday. that in a littley little bit. >> a lot going on in the weather world. thank you adam. we turn to the latest on breaking news we've been following this afternoon and that's the resignation of steve bannon. what and none tells -- the white house and chief of staff john kelly reportedly agreed today would be bannon's last day. before joining forces with the president, bannon was best known for running the far right and often inflammatory web site breitbart news. the move marks the fourth major resignation in the trump

administration in less than a month beginning with press secretary sean pricer followed by reince preibus and anthony scaramucci. >> a new jersey state trooper celebrated for saving a life alongside the garden state parkway. this is trooper paul. he thought he was responding to an accident near middle township around 4:30 yesterday but when he arrived he discovered it was actually a medical emergency. a 70-year-old woman was outside of her car struggling to breathe. at first, trooper paul tried to get the north wildwood woman identified as joan murphy to sit in the passenger seat but when her breathing stopped completely, he placed her on the pavement and began cpr. within seconds murphy was awake. >> can you talk to me? talk to me, okay. you stopped breathing for a little bit.

>> wow. an ambulance arrived moments later and rushed murphy to cape may regional hospital. at last check, the senior citizen was doing well all thanks to trooper paul's quick actions. we turn now to another hero, credited with saving not one but two lives yesterday. the champion rescued a pair of rottweilers who found themselves stranded on the schuylkill river and the story doesn't end there. "action news" reporter gray hall live along boathouse row with what that good samaritan now needs from the public. rick. >> reporter: hi, sharrie. what a tough time for these two dogs. we're thankful for good people like the one in the story you're about to meet. take a look behind me. you'll see along the schuylkill where the two dogs were trapped and thanks to one man with a really big heart those dogs are safe. meet buttercup and sasha, these are only temporary names given to the two rottweilers rescued by marcus brown. he saw the two female dogs stuck along the schuylkill

river thursday and immediately knew he had to help. >> i think somebody abandoned them. i don't want to think that. i think they got really far and happened to fall in the water. >> reporter: these pictures show the dogs covered in algae in need of a helping hand. brown is a rower and his boss called him about 6:00 a.m. thursday when she saw the dogs stranded in the water not far from the saint joseph's university boathouse. >> it was good seeing those dogs get up on the dock. >> reporter: brown says his friends call him rottweiler whisperer because he has a two-year-old named mocha. mocha said he called police who called animal control. he left thinking those dogs would be okay but says he only returned to find the officers gone and those dogs still there. if they're still there i'm going to save them some way, some how. >> reporter: animal care and control team of philadelphia says the initial report came in for loose dogs. she says by the time the crews made it to the scene the dogs had fallen into the water.

solar power among other things but some local high schoolers have spent the summer studying solar energy. in fact, they were the first students to participate in the city's solar training program and today they were congratulated for completing the six week course. mayor kenney and other city officials helped to honor the high schoolers here at city hall the kids have been studying clean energy and solar installation as part of the city's find your power program. >> a group of students at the philadelphia college of osteopathic medicine took a big step towards their career. these future physician assistants gathered at ginsburg auditorium for their white coat ceremony. this is a significant rite of passage. students were called up one by one to put on those white coats in front of the class. afterwards, they all took an oath. it's been a busy but productive summer for philadelphia teenagers taking part in the city's summer work project. 14 to 18-year-olds have now completed their internships as part of the summer youth

employment program and urban affairs coalition. it taught the teenagers financial responsibility and gave them a taste of what life will be like after high school. philadelphia mayor jim kenney was on hand to help the teens celebrate. students created posters to show off what they learned during the program. >> all right. well, an ocean county new jersey woman lost her engagement woman lost her ring in italy. the couple returned home to brick township thinking the ring was gone forever. well, the family recently returned to their other family's home in italy and a sparkle in the sidewalk caught justin's eye he tells us. >> i thought maybe it was a coin or something but never in my wildest dreams did i think we would ever actually find that ring again. >> nine years later. >> he kept saying he saw something shiny in my head i said he probably things it's the ring and i thought it's no

>> sandra alvez says she decided to play a "wheel of fortune" slot machine in the terminal. her five dollars gamble paid off and she walked away with more than $1.6 million in the airport. the grandmother says the jackpot was a wonderful surprise but it won't stop her from working at her hair salon. >> ♪ >> those things never happen to me. love that story. big talkers now. ahead of monday's solar eclipse some schools are canceling classes. not so much so that kids can take the time off and witness the event but so that they don't create a liability because they kind of just don't trust that students will not stare directly at the sun on their watch. schools from south carolina to pennsylvania to ohio are either closing entirely or letting students out early. many say they can't provide eye protection to all students or ensure that they'll use the glasses properly. they even fear that kids will inadvertently look out the window at the sun while they're at school or on the bus ride home.

as we've been telling you staring directly at the sun without approved glasses can be dangerous burning retinas even causing vision loss. some schools are using the eclipse as a teachable moment in class. big talkers today. if you've ever been to which you can e. cheese then you've surely been entertained by the animal characters. the chain is breaking up the band and people are either rally sad about it or relieved. it doesn't seem to be a middle of the road emotion on this one. the band first got together in 1977 when which you can e. cheese first opened but now at some or possibly all locations that band is retiring. the chief executive says and i'm going to paraphrase this kids are basically over the animatronics and they simply wait for the live chuck e cheese to come out. expect more costumed real people. they're changing the look and

little better. there was an accident down by the black horse pike that's gone now. it's still slow as you head towards the a.c. expressway but not as slow as it was during the last half hour. in mount laurel a vehicle broke down along 73 approaching the turnpike. that's gone much the turnpike has southbound speeds in the teens headed towards mount laurel exit four. until that point i would use 295 but then head over to the turnpike because south of 73, 295 has speeds in the 20's. a crash by delaware park along route seven stanton christian ya' nan road. in concorde township on rut one baltimore by k and m auto is gone. we'll check it again in the 5 o'clock hour. >> see you then matt. >> meteorologist adam joseph coming back with that exclusive accuweather forecast.

here now with a closer look at the forecast. the weekend we will salvage it, right. >> weekend is perfect from start to finish. we have to get through some nasty storms this evening. we have some severe storms that are approaching philadelphia. you can see some of those dark clouds starting to build in the western sky here over the center city skyline and give it another hour or so and it will be here in philadelphia. as we look at storm tracker6 live double scan there you can see a solid squall line of storms arcing all the way from the lehigh valley through berks county, down to reading and baltimore as they are pushing from the west to the east. as we close in, this is a nasty severe storm, winds near 70 miles an hour with this. at this time this is starting to indicate a bow just to the west of pottstown and then it pulls into northern chester county near elverson as that rushes to the east those towns and the times you see there, buck town 4:55, pottstown 4:57, spring city 5:09.

that's when you get the rush of wind and tremendous amount of lightning and very heavy downpours as well and you can see those lightning strikes, they are meaning business near 358 in the last 15 minutes from elverson down to honey brook into sun owe lancaster county. this is one nasty storm pushing to the east at about 25 miles an hour and again, even bringing some very torrential rain and some quick rising waters on some of the roadways so definitely watch that in the evening rush. here are the warnings with those storms. until 5:30 p.m. for berks county, western and central chester county, montgomery county and even a little clip of berks county in bucks county, 70 miles an hour winds, 1 inch hail even possible with these storms as they blast through. in addition a flash flood warning where we've seen a few inches of rain already in and around reading and most of berks county so again if you

encounter any water on the road turn around. these heat indices are well over 100. philadelphia, millville and dover, so these storms are not going to weaken. they will hold together as they move through the delaware valley and eventually to the shore. satellite and radar this is a cold front coming through which opens up the door to nicer weather. there could be some pop-ups ahead of the storm in south jersey but the main line pushes to the shore around 8, 9 o'clock tonight, southern parts of delaware and then it's long gone and by midnight even some of those clouds trying to move on out. the humidity over the weekend will be dropping as well. how it's going to feel, dewpoints which are now near 80 in spots, will be back between 60 and 65, just slightly humid. water temperature 80 degrees. looking good both days t lots of sun on sunday, a few extra

outside today, you know it was seriously humid. now we're watching a system that threatens to bring severe storms to much of the area. meteorologist cecily tynan tracking the threat and joins us now live with the accuweather forecast. hi, cecily. >> hi, sharrie, hi rick. that line of severe storms is moving into our north and west county. you need lift, we got that with a cold front moving in and the fact that these are moving in the in the max heating of the day is also an ingredient that's really intensifying them. in fact, this line the past 15 minutes about 950 lightning strikes as it continues to push to the east at about 30 miles per hour. so, we have severe thunderstorm warnings really lining up all in advance of this system from parts of bucks county montgomery county berks county, a large portion of chester county and lancaster county. this means any storm in addition to to the heavy downpours and the lightning can contain wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour and even some large hail. so, we zoom in on this one part of the storm i'm
