total solar eclipse and there it is, monday night rick is off walter perez joins us this evening and the big story on "action news" is today's great american eclipse. >> although delaware valley is a was in the in the path of totality. millions of us paused this afternoon to watch as the moon moved in right in front of the sun. we have live team coverage tonight from across the region and from one of the best viewing spots in the country but we begin with new jersey correspondent nora muchanic live near princeton university. nora. >> reporter: hi there walter. we're right across the street from princeton at palmer square the main viewing site in this area today. thousands of people showed up here to watch the eclipse and i can tell you they were not disappointed. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: palmer square in princeton was the place to be at new jersey new jerseyans what happened the eclipse. >> you see something blocking the sun that you know is the moon. >> reporter: pretty wild.

>> it's wild. >> tiny circle of light. >> reporter: you can see that the moon is getting -- some slowly like very little. >> it's amazing. don't look, don't look. >> it's so tempting to look up. >> reporter: people shared the special eclipse glasses so everyone could take a peek. >> great time and being able to catch something that -- >> don't look up. >> i won't. to catch something that you won't normally see. >> reporter: someone brought out the heavy gear like this welder's mask. >> kind of like a pac man. >> reporter: where did you get the gear. >> my mom found it in our attic. >> reporter:. >> the big challenge is that the pin hole is so small and making sure you're in the right angle. >> reporter: organizers never imagined that the turnout would be so big but about 2,000 people jammed into palmer square to share this rare and unusual event. >> i think it's wonderful that the library and the town does this and it's educational. >> reporter: there were princeton university astrophysicists on site to

explain the science and astronomers who were tickled by the huge turnout here. >> i have never seen something like this in my entire 35 years. this is amazing. what we like about this as astronomers is it gets people interested in science. >> reporter: at the peak of the eclipse clouds covered the remaining sun but that didn't ruin any of the sun. >> because of the clouds you can look directly at it on my camera -- on my camera on my phone i've got some pretty solid pictures of it i'm not too disappointed. >> reporter: it really was a great event and i'm happy to report that these much sought after eclipse glasses they really do work. now i guess they're just collector's items. live in princeton i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> thank you nora. while many folks around our area paused this afternoon to see that partial solar eclipse, millions also flocked to the 70-mile wide path of totality that cut across the country including one of the so-called capitols of the clips saint joseph missouri.

our own meteorologist adam joseph experienced total darkness there this afternoon along with some local astronomers. he's live from missouri now with more on that. hi adam. >> reporter: yeah, monica it did not disappoint. the weather was a little iffy at times early this morning but we were in that like almost middle of that 70-mile path so we were 35 miles from the southern part of the 70-mile path, 35 miles to the north it was a perfect alignment where totality lasted the longest right here in a field that you could call the field of dreams. and in fact, many people came from around this country as well as the world lining up on a dirt road to head what most are calling the biggest watch party in missouri, an estimated 20,000 people set up camp waiting for a once in a lifetime experience that would only last two minutes 38 seconds. when the eclipse began at 11:41 a.m. people cheered and began looking up from a comfy

blanket maybe a chair or just standing up. no matter where you were it was a great view. soon after that started the storms started rolling in, rain started falling lightning crackled across the sky and some people packed it up and called it quits. we saw a major line exiting this field but for those who stayed hoping for a miracle it completely paid off. at 1:06 p.m. day became night and you could only see a faint light on the horizon and the clouds parted in a perfect moment that totality happened. it was witnessed and cheers overpowered the rumbles of thunder in the distance and then emotions completely took over. >> you can't explain it. it's just awesome and the goose bumps and tears, it was just fantastic. >> i started crying. it was just really amazing and it was really overwhelming and so lucky that we even saw it for 30 seconds. >> when we got to see the total eclipse it was amazing. people say it's spiritual. i really do believe it is p my

husband cried so -- >> reporter: i tried myself. >> yeah. >> reporter: i did and it's just -- you can't express when day turns to night and the what you see with that corona around the moon that atmosphere of the sun monica, as well as walter it is something i will never ever forget. it's on tape but it's in here for the rest of my life and hasn't happened on this soil in 214 years and right where i'm standing not going to happen foreclose to 200 years. i'm so happy to you in the delaware valley. >> hard to explain why the heart pounds watching something like that. thank you adam. plenty of people from delaware got a case of the eclipse here. action cam at the delaware museum of history in wilmington today where it was a full-on celestial celebration. today's party included a special children's story about the solar eclipse and a live look at nasa's eclipse themed and other interactive events. former nasa space ambassador was on hand at

wilmington university. terry blanche is a wilmington university alumnus and was expert on this heavenly event. the university had dozens of telescopes on the green so everyone could get a nice closeup view. >> "action news" reporter vernon odom spent the day with eclipse watchers in chester county. he continues our coverage from west chester university. hi vern. >> reporter: hello walter. it was a glorious day here in west chester university's campus. a huge turnout far more than expected and a powerful telescopes belonging to this university worked like a charm.p on thequad at univ midday the planners of this viewing party expected about 300 folks but that many figure w eclipsed as eas1500 converged on the quad. as the bee witching hour grew near and portions of the sun began to disappear the high powered cameras fired up and those with the proper glasses focused on what they had come to see.

>> i said before i can't explain why but it makes your heart race. >> something big. i love it. time for a check of the "action news" traffic report. this could be big. >> yeah, really. let's go to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. >> in a bad way. >> we wish the traffic was racing like the heart but no, no not so much. typical afternoon delays monica and walter northbound side from penn's landing to this point where the vine street expressway joins in on up to the work zone at girard avenue. it's normal stuff but it is definitely slow this afternoon and slowing persists on the schuylkill, a lot of speeds there this afternoon in the 30's. our crash on the northbound side of 295 in bellmawr is now long gone but it's still extra jammed there as you come off the 42 freeway. and an accident in winslow township along the white horse pike and in williamstown along sicklerville road have also cleared out. some are clearing. we're still trying to recover in a few spots. burlington bristol bridge just wrapping up an opening for a northbound ship so we're recovering there as well. still slow on both sides. and mass transit just a couple of septa regional rail issues

>> police in spain have confirmed that the suspect from the barcelona van attack has been shot and killed. the man wearing what appeared to be an explosive belt was shot by police there. the suspect had been the focus of an intense manhunt after authorities say he used a van to mow do you pedestrians on thursday. 13 people were killed and more than 120 were injured. president trump set to

address the nation outlining this strategy for the war in afghanistan. the president tweeted over the weekend he's reached a decision on a way forward but offered no clues as to what that might be. mr. trump met with his national security team at camp david over the weekend to review all possible options. they range from sending more troops to withdrawing completely. we'll have live coverage of the address at 9 o'clock tonight right here on 6abc. >> a decision on whether to remove the statue dedicated for the late philadelphia mayor frank rizzo is coming soon that's according to mayor jim kenney. he met today with supporters of the center city statue which is surrounded by barricades now after it was vandalized twice. critics say rizzo was a racist mayor and police commissioner. supporters say the statue represents a part of the city's history whether you like it or not. >> you don't know at this moment what the right thing is to to for everybody and it won't be the right thing for everybody in the end. >> a south philadelphia mural of rizzo was vandalized again.

>> in health check tonight for nearly 25 years new parents have been told to put their newborn babies to sleep on their backs. well initially it worked and rates of sudden infant death syndrome or sids fell but parents may need a bit of a refresher on that. more thans of new moms say they tend to put their infants on their backs now less than half say they always do it. researchers found african-american moms and those with less than a high school education were more likely to put babies on their stomachs. >> concussion patients are normally told to stay away from computers and smartphone

enthusiasts eclipse chasers nasa astronaut and other guests. passengers were among the first to see the total eclipse about 1,000 miles off the coast of oregon as the plane left the path of totality flight attendants handed out champagne for a over to the. >> wonder if they had to use the glasses the eclipse glasses. >> i know who knows. >> they would still have to. >> wha the champagne glasses -- or cups -- bottles the real little ones, you know.i was trying to make a joke. i couldn't get it out. >> i was with you. >> all right, let's talk more about the eclipse because i want to share this photo. this was sent to me from the mother of aiden myers. he lives in cape may county and the family myers family started planning their eclipse trip three years ago. so, they went to tennsee and is is what he captured. what i like here is you can actually see see right there that little pink dot that's one of the bailey's beads you

see around the moon and that's caused from the topo graphy. the good news if you don't like the heat and humidity it only lasts for one day. big changes by the middle of the week. by the end of the week it will feel like fall and looking ahead to our next eclipse we have another one in seven years. i want to show you this. this is really neat graphic and it shows all a total solar eclipses in the 21st century. this was the path of today's. if you look up here 2024 that's re i be close to 90 peent and if you want to see it, if you want to travel, you just have to go to the northwest corner of pennsylvania and then this one here may first 2079, the path of totality basically begins here so for our very younger viewers that's something to look forward to. back at home right now we do have a few thunderstorms beginning to pop in parts of

lancaster and berks county. you can see this one cluster right now right north of 422. this view, the past 15 minutes we've had 16 lightning strikes. they're beginning to move towards the east and what this is, it's a piece of energy known as a short wave that is triggering some of that activity also bringing in a little bit of cloud cover today. right now 84 degrees in philadelphia the same in millville. allentown 85. cape may that sea breeze kicking up currently 79. satellite and radar it disappears momentarily thanks to the eclipse. i love that because our satellite is visible it needs the sun but you can see that cluster of some showers and thunderstorms trying move in from the east. so tonight very, very muggy. it will be partly cloudy an isolated thunderstorm, 74 degrees in philadelphia. allentown 70, cape may 74 and lancaster 70. tomorrow the heat is on. this is our heat index tracker and it shows it really ramping up by 2 o'clock in the afternoon, it will feel around 100 degrees and then we have a cold front that will bring us some changes.

official observation site so students, future scientists could collect data, the time, the temperature during the time of the eclipse and i got to tell you whether you're a future scientist os someone just wanting to see the show, it certainly didn't disappoint today. eclipse glasses to protect the eyes and protected lenses your cell phopot outside and a view of the sky is all you needed to watch the moon pass in front of the sun. >> it's like a little circle. whoa. look it. you got to try this. >> some people don't get to see this, some do. it's like a cool experience. >> reporter: an experience that you might not see until 2024. that's why the mckaig education nature center was packed. 300 people attended the great american eclipse watch party in wayne. families gathered to see the show in the sky. >> that's amazing. just like the moon and the sun is out and you can see like clouds still rushing by. >> i thought the moon looked like cheese.

the color of it looked like the really dark orange cheese just like a slice of it. >> reporter: yeah. >> and then the clouds looked like a cracker behind it like hey, i'm ready for you to eat me. >> reporter: are >> no. [laughter] some of the young kids here are aspiring scientists. nat t children like jada collecting data and wind is s the solar eclipse. >> did you notice a change with the temperatures. >> yeah. >> reporter: what did you notice. >> it got a little cooler and then it raised up back again. >> reporter: while this was an educational experience organizers say this became a family affair and one to remember for years to come. >> the very cool thing i thought was that the community got together. i mean, there was 300 of us from this area that got together and just happen wonderful time together as friends and neighbors. >> reporter: it really was a lot of fun. you know, once you were looking at the solar eclipse you can't help but have the kid come out at you. look up at the sun and the moon passing over the sun and just say wow, that is so cool.

now, the next total solar eclipse happens in 2024 and the next totality passing through pennsylvania is in 2079. so you might want to keep these eclipse solar glasses on standby for those events. reporting live from the mckaig education nature center in wayne, melissa magee channel6 "action news." >> keep them in a box in the closet. thank you mels as a result of the accident the great american eclipse was also quite a show in delaware county. officials from the free library in darby handed out viewing glasses during its eclipse viewing party at the darby rec center. they hosted science exhibits and quizzes and provided the crowd a live feed from nasa so they wouldn't miss a second of the action. >> "action news" on the campus of villanova university in radnor where folks gathered for a solar eclipse open house. students and staff with the department of astro physics and planetary science provided the glasses and solar telescopes so everybody could get a closer look. >> and in south jersey people

tonight. donya bacchus live in los angeles with the latest for us. >> reporter: monica, this collision marks the second time a u.s. naval destroyer crashed with another vessel in the pacific in the past two months. now the navy's top admiral is calling for a comprehensive review. the search continues for 10 missing sailors aboard the u.s.s. john s. mccain after the guided missile destroyer collided with the orange line nick mc a 600-foot oil tanker east of singapore. five other sailors were injured with four of them being airlifted to the hospital. >> my thoughts and prayers are with the sailors and the families of the u.s.s. john s. mccain. >> reporter: the destroyer has significant damage to its hull. the crew's sleeping quarters among the parts flooded e damp from the two ships seem to indicate they were crossing paths or attempting to move in different directions at the time of the collision. >> it was nighttime. it was one of the busiest parts -- shipping lanes in the world. one third of all maritime

shipping goes through here. >> reporter: this marks the second collision involving the navy's seventh fleet in the pacific in just two months. back in june, seven sailors aboard the "u.s.s. fitzgerald" died after it collided with a much larger cargo ship. the u.s. navy is now ordering a broad investigation. >> we'll look at all related accidents, incidents at sea that sort of thing. >> reporter: the navy's top admiral is also calling for an operational pause in the region. the u.s. s mccain bears the name of u.s. senator john mccain's father and grandfather. monica. >> thank you donya. french police ruled out terrorism as a motive for the van that ran into two marseilles bus stops morning. a woman was killed at one of them. investigators say the 35-year-old man at the wheel of the van was being treated for psychological problems. the van hit some bus stops in two neighborhoods in the old port neighborhood. world news tonight with david muir will have more on the collision involving the u.s.s. mccain as well as

burlington county, north of route 38 by marne highway and they just got it pushed off to the two shoulders the left one and the right one. police are still on the scene so all three northbound lanes are opened but you can see on the travel time there dealing with about a 14 minute delay as you travel northbound from route 73 on up toward route one in mercer county. meanwhile in deptford we got a crash we're watching along delsea drive near 295 so expect some congestion in that neck of the woods. and live downtown center city this is the vine street expressway westbound side some police activity right here under the overpass blocks the left lane. so you come westbound away from 95, it's extra heavy traveling through this point at broad street because that left lane remains blocked. here it's the right lane that's blocked in bucks county. this is 95 and northbound side and here it's just construction between this point at newtown and the scudder falls bridge. we see this many afternoons but it does cause a little bit of slowing. and again this afternoon in chester county, we're seeing slow speeds like just 16 miles per hour on the southbound side of the route one oxford

for a moment a whole bunch of strangers are outside looking the the sky and smiling. >> it's bigger than the rest of us. it's really neat. >> we need more of this. we need another one. >> more eclipses next. >> week. >> that's a presidential campaign right there. more eclipses. >> work on that. sky conditions were pretty good. let's go live on sky6. taking a look over the ben franklin bridge. and yeah, it wasn't completely clear today. we did have to fight with some clouds but mostly sunny right now and we got some great photos of the eclipse. bob watts editor here at channel6 got this through a special lens and you can see the sun, you can see the shadow of the moon. you can also see some of those clouds intermittent. they were passing through here and there and it's all associated with a short wave that's moving through. it's also sparking some thunderstorms across berks and lancaster county. temperatures on the warm side. our high 88 degrees, that's 3 degrees above normal. 84 in philadelphia right now.

allentown 85. cape may got the sea breeze 78 and wilmington 84 degrees. so the evening planner shows temperatures really won't be falling much after about 7 o'clock. slowly dropping down into the upper 70's but with winds out of the south it's going to be very muggy and again a few isolated thunderstorms as we head through the evening hours. so let's show you what i'm talking about. double scan live showing most of the region is rain free but we do have some of this activity again popping up western berks county, also lancaster county and the problem with these is that they're barely moving at all. so, this dash right now just north of 422 northwest of reading, has been dropping a lot of rain in a short period of time so there is a flood advisory posted there. be careful. do not drive through any flooded roads. also we have this one batch north of lancaster right now. visible satellite across the nation showing what happens when we had that solar eclipse. i love this. the clouds you can see just clearing, it's because visible

satellite depends on the sun to really reflect off the clouds so you could see that path of totality. tomorrow, the heat is on. 93 degrees with winds out of the south. an evening thunderstorm possible with that cold front. you add the humidity. it will feel like 100 degrees. so, because of that, we have an excessive heat advisory posted along i-95 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. tuesday where it's going to feel like a hundred. take it easy, find air conditioning, drink lots of water. a good place to be down the shore with temperatures in the mid 80's. it will be warm and humid. that ocean temperature 76. but do be careful. there's a high risk of rip currents tomorrow. listen to the lifeguards. bethany beach 90 degrees and definitely don't go swimming where and when the lifeguards are not on duty. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, tomorrow is an accuweather alert day with that excessive heat advisory, it will feel like a hundred degrees. 93 degrees some late day and evening thunderstorms with that cold front. best chance of powerful storms

folks dawned special glasses to view the wonder in the sky. yes, it took the sun and the moon to bring americans together today if just for a moment. it is monday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is eclipse mania here at home and across the country. "action news" reporter john rawlins is live in cape may today and john, if you're going to be pieing into the sky for an hour or so why not do it from the beach. >> reporter: well, that seemed to be the thinking. to be honest we didn't find anyone who came here specifically to cape may who said they wanted to see the clips. they came to cape may because they wanted to be at the beach. to are them the eclipse was a bonus. >> looking forward to it. >> reporter: at noon, some beachgoers still looking for those hard to find eclipse glasses. a last minute save came when a local astro photographer chris bakely handed out 200 glasses
