people flee to safer ground. >> with catastrophic flooding expected this could be the strongest hurricane to make landfall in the u.s. in more than a decade. we have team coverage for you tonight beginning with meteorologist cecily tynan tracking harvey's path. cecily. >> just got the latest update from the national hurricane center and harvey continues to strengthen maximum sustained winds up to 125 miles per hour. hits 130 it becomes a cat four hurricane and this storm was just a tropical depression two days ago and now you can see that sharply defined eye, it's only 60 miles east of corpus christi. it's moving northwest at 10 miles per hour so if it continues that track it will be making landfall along the southeast coast of texas within the next six hours. now, this is the 3-d imagery and you can see that this is a massive storm. it's very strong. we have very good symmetry. we have that deep eye. it's also 280 miles across and it's already starting to rain very heavily from houston through corpus christi and it

will be raining here likely through next wednesday. we've also been seeing some tornado watches and warnings cropping up which is typical with the outer bands. so, this is one of the buoy reports here. shows a wind gust just to the east of corpus christi at 67 miles per hour and hurricanes come with a whole package of problems. you have the wind gusts, you have the storm surge but with this storm system since it's a slow moving disaster, the rain will be the biggest problem. it's going to meander there for days and we're looking at rainfall that could exceed 25-inches, some areas could get up to 35-inches of rain and this is low lying country. it's almost like a bowl so it's very hard to actually get rid of flooding rains once they move in. so, this is what to expect. category three landfall later on tonight likely before midnight eastern daylight time catastrophic flooding power outages for days and that storm surge of six to 12 feet. i'll have more details on this

storm and also our local weather coming up in the accuweather forecast. brian. >> all right, cecily, thank you. storm is more than 1500 miles away it will have an impact on our region. "action news" reporter john rawlins live outside the local red cross where people are already getting involved. >> reporter: that's right, they're already gearing up here. two volunteers have departed part of an advanced guard. others will follow. we'll get to that in a moment. this is also as well how people can help the local red cross here. we were also at the airport talking to travelers who were coming in from houston in advance of harvey. the o'connor-stover family of houston arriving at phl after deciding to push forward a family vacation to get out of the path of harvey. >> we don't know how the house is going to hold up. we'll keep in touch with neighbors. >> reporter: irena sims with a schedule to drop her daughter off at temple. back home her husband and her

pets on her mind. >> worst case scenario something will fall on the house or a flood. >> reporter: they're packing stand by trucks with supplies, the call center already handling hurricane related inquiries from the storm area. the regional ceo explaining if people want to help, they should give blood shipments are getting ready or give a cash donation by phone or online or text. >> 90999 and that will make $10 donation to the american red cross and it will be used just for harvey. ism harvey is bearing down on people and petroleum production. the dots on the map represent gulf coast refineries. they are shutting down. the question, could they be damaged impacting gasoline surprise. it's something aaa watches. >> production sites they want to get back online as quickly as possible. but again, we don't know how much damage this storm will do. >> reporter: it's still too early to tell if gas here selling in this case for $2.45

story in sharon hill delaware county today where firefighters are still trying to get the upper hand on a stubborn apartment fire. that blaze broke out on the 1000 block of woodland of a just after two. ooh 30 this afternoon. flames and thick smoke could be seen pouring out of the top of the building. so far we've heard of just one minor injury. no word yet on how many residents have been displaced or how this fire started. an "action news" crew is on the scene with a live report this evening at 5:30. >> in south jersey the former chief of the audubon park volunteer fire company is headed to prison. today a camden county judge ordered a six year sentence for john ter uso. prosecutors say he used a fire station computer to view and distribute disturbing images and videos. after serving his sentence he will be forced to register as a sex offender. we have new video of a man police say tried to kidnap a young woman. take a look. the victim got off a septa bus tuesday night. that's when the man approached

her in north philadelphia. he continued walking with her to the 2500 block of ridge avenue where police say he then grabbed her and tried to drag her into a vacant lot. fortunately she broke free and called for help. police are still trying to identify and the locate her attacker. >> two people remain behind bars tonight accused in a murder for hire plot in chester county. "action news" reporter vernon odom explains why the couple allegedly tried to hire a hit man. >> this defendant got caught with 813 baggies of heroin. >> reporter: that defendant is 29-year-old christopher percard of state college and now his girlfriend latrice harrington is in hot water as well. they allegedly concocted a murder for hire plan to kill a man who was with picard when he got busted. >> when the defendant believed that the passenger ratted him out he decided you know what i'm going to get a hit man and i'm going to kill the passenger in the car and that's how i'm going to beat this case. >> reporter: so, picard and harrington started brainstorming inside the

chester county prison during her visits. on wire taps they allegedly came up with the idea of getting a professional to kill the man they feared was ratting picard out. so the d.a. provided them with a hit man straight out of central casting an undercover officer. >> the defendant had his girlfriend latrice harrington set this whole thing up. she ran communications back and forth between the hit man and the defendant and then latrice harrington actually supplied the hit man with two guns and money. >> reporter: late last week picard and harrington got confirmation that their plot had been carried out successfully. >> the hit man reported back to the defendant and to latrice harrington that he had killed the victim. and the response was, "that's great. thank you ." >> reporter: picard and harrington remain jailed at the county prison. if convicted in this case, they're both likely to spend many decades at a state penitentiary. i'm vernon odom, channel6 "action news" in west chester.

>> a man was taken away in handcuffs today after he rode his bicycle in the middle of the schuylkill expressway. one of our "action news" producers was actually among the motorists who spotted him. she was able to capture a photo of him riding between the left and center lanes obviously slowing down westbound traffic at the height of the morning rush. state police also caught up with him near the girard of a exit and took him away in a patrol car. no word how he wound up on that highway or what charges he may face. >> the delaware river deepening project which could help bring jobs and money to our region and hit a milestone today. deepening that channel to 45 feet will allow bigger ships and more cargo to move through the packer of a marine terminal in south philadelphia. officials revealed today that they have secured the final $29 million needed to finish that job by the end of next year. pennsylvania senator bob casey and congressman bob brady are credited with keeping that project alive. >> a professional football team is preparing to defend its title, only one game stands between the

of texas. time is running out for those folks to get out of the way. dozens of residents are forced to run when flames start tearing through their apartments in delaware county. we're live on the scene of this developing story. and president trump promised on the campaign trail that he would be safe. he says he's considering doing away with a program that actually protected a certain group of children and we will explain. >> but first, a live look now at the shores of galveston texas. this area and much of the lone star state will be inundated with record setting rain, fierce winds and dangerous even deadly flooding. >> hurricane harvey strengthened to a category three hurricane about two hours ago. that means the winds alone will be more than 120 miles an hour. >> texas governor greg abbott has already requested a presidential disaster declaration in anticipation of that storm. >> meantime folks are enduring

these long lines at gas stations to fill up waiting up to three hours. stores are quickly selling out of essentials like water generators even sand. despite the rush to get out, fema officials are still worried. harvey is the first hurricane to hit the lone star state in 18 years. >> afraid that people may not be taking this storm seriously. they may not be heeding the warning and again, that window to evacuate is coming to a close. >> voluntary and mandatory evacuations are in effect and a state of emergency has been declared for all of louisiana and parts of texas. >> and for the most at-risk residents of texas now is the time to get out. doctors across south texas worked with cook children's medical center in north texas to move patients in the neonatal units in the hospitals of harvey's path out of danger. >> good idea. meteorologist melissa magee with the latest on hurricane harvey's track and strength. >> melissa what's the latest.

>> monica and brian we're starting to see some strengthening with this hurricane. s were ohio take a look at live double scan radar 3-d that well defined eye is getting closer to to the close state of texas right now. heavy rain in houston even into corpus christi. this will continue to move through the north and west as we go throughout the rest of tonight and into the day tomorrow. we've got watches and warnings posted, a warning, a tropical storm warning just to the south of austin texas and it's as far inland as san antonio texas, a hurricane warning across the coastal communities encompassing corpus corpus chris well. winds sustained at 120 miles an hour. with storm tracker double scan radar 3-d we have the ability top track the wave height so that the center of the storm waves are as high as 26 feet and this will be a concern as they come crashing with that northwesterly wind along coastal sections of texas. so, as far as what we can expect as we track this storm

here with harvey, it's a category three. more than likely going to make landfall within the next several hours now and winds sustained at 125 miles per hour and the concern with this storm is that it makes that landfall later tonight and then it sits and spins not just over the weekend but over the next several days right into early next week as it is currently 60 miles to the east-southeast of corpus christi, texas. the wind is certainly a concern. but catastrophic flooding as the storm sits over the same location. more details in the full and exclusive accuweather forecast guys. >> thank you melissa. stay with "action news" and 6abc.com for continuing coverage of hurricane harvey as it approaches the texas gulf coast. we'll have the latest updates for you on air and online at 6abc.com. >> we are continuing to follow a developing story out of delaware county today. firefighters are battling a fast moving blaze inside an apartment building in sharon hill. let's get the very latest from "action news" reporter trish hartman who is live at the scene with details at this

point. trish. >> reporter: yeah, brian, officials say that fire is still going right now. take a look. you can see plenty of crews are still here on scene. the ladder trucks are still up over the building and they've been periodically flying a drone over the scene to get an aerial view of the roof to help the firefighters get the bigger picture as they try to knock this down. officials say everyone is out of the building. one minor injury has been reported. hundreds of fire and employees have been working on getting this fire under control. take a look at some video from a couple hours ago when the flames could be seen from the roof of this three-story apartment building containing six units. officials say the call came in around 2:30 p.m. for a possible explosion and fire in the 400 block of sharon avenue. it's now a three-alarm fire. ladder trucks have been did youring -- dumping water on the blaze for hours. officials say that minor injury reported was a person who lived in the building, was

taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. neighbors are you they heard a loud boom and then saw heavy smoke. >> kind of shook offer the building you know what i mean? i never seen a fire like that. i seen fires but not like that especially when it's dark, you know what i mean? it was black. >> right now due to the collapse of the roof, we can't put anybody inside the building. we're surrounding it and drown and it with all the large diameter hose in the ladder trucks. once we feel we have the bulk of the fire knocked, we'll carefully ascertain how the building is, maybe send somebody in the first floor to check and see how it is and then eventually i'm sure it will have to be demolished. >> reporter: so, volunteers from the american red cross are set up at borough hall. no word on how many people have been displaced. firefighters say they will be here for the rest of the evening. we're live in sharon hill trish hartman channel6 "action news." brian. >> trish, thank you. wilmington police are looking for the man who shot at two officers late last

night. police were patrolling in the area of tulip and scott streets when they saw a man looking suspicious. he fired several gunshots at officers then took off on foot. the officers shot back but they do not think they hit the suspect. >> now to the latest from washington. it appears now that president trump is considering doing away with a law that protects children of parents who entered the country illegally known as daca. this despite previous promises to keep the law. abc's karen travers with more. >> reporter: in the past president trump has called this one of his toughest decisions. candidate donald trump's top promises. if elected he said he would immediately end the deferred action for childhood arrivals programs that allowed nearly 800,000 undocumented young immigrants known as dreamers who were brought to the country as children to stay

here in the u.s. and work legally but now several conservative states led by texas are threatening to sue to end the program. white house officials say the president is seriously considering giving in rather than defending the program in court. on the campaign trail mr. lashed as daca as unconstitutional. his tone softened when he took office. in january he said the so-called dreamers had nothing to fear and then this in february. >> we're going to show great heart. daca is a very difficult subject for me. it's one of the most difficult subjects i have. >> reporter: president trump could end daca with an executive order as early as next week but the key question is what happens to those individuals that have already been processed? would they be deported and if they're not would they be allowed to continue to work here. reporting from the white house, karen travers channel6 "action news." >> meantime president trump continues to put the pressure on republicans in congress.

>> police are looking for the man caught on this surveillance video robbing a star in north philadelphia. it happened just before 5:00 a.m. at the sky deli on the 3400 block of germantown avenue. once inside the suspect took cash and 10 cartons of cigarettes. he's described only as a black man in his 20's. his face was partly covered but he did have hair on his chin and a tattoo on his right forearm. >> six people were hurt in a late night pileup in atlantic city. it happened in the westbound lanes of route 30 about 11:30 last night. police say six cars were involved. investigators are looking into the cause of the accident and the extent of the injuries. >> sports director ducis rodgers joining us here as we start to dissect what was a pretty good night for the

just kind of ties in very well. >> meteorologist melissa magee on high alert with hurricane harvey of course. >> that's right. we'll be tracking it as we go throughout the rest of tonight and into the weekend. expected to make landfall in the next several hours. we'll show you what's going on with hurricane harvey. as we walk to the weather sent you can see that this storm is quite massive here. right now it is a category three storm with winds sustained at 125 miles per hour. it's moving to the northwest at 10 miles per hour. maximum sustained gusts at 150 miles per hour. so, when you look at the scale, it's right in that range and on the verge of becoming a category four storm

so this is something we're going to be tracking as we go throughout the rest of tonight and for that matter into the day tomorrow as well. so, the wind is certainly a concern. but also the rain. catastrophic flooding is a big concern so this will more than likely make landfall within the next several hours and the problem with this storm when you look at the spaghetti plots here right into early next week, the storm just kind of sits and spins and meanders. we're talking about rainfall from 15-inches in some spots close to 3 feet of rain is likely so we'll be tracking hurricane harvey, a category three storm. back here at home it's gorgeous outside. 77 in philadelphia, 66 up in the poconos, 77 in lancaster, 72 for allentown and also reading. down the coast in beach haven 75. millville coming in at 81 degrees. satellite6 along with action radar showing you we've got quiet conditions right now. a few more clouds starting to trickle across the region but these clouds will break later on tonight as a northerly wind

>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with ducis rodgers, meteorologist cecily tynan and jim gardner. >> ♪ >> friday night. a historic statue is stolen from fairmount park but then discovered in south philadelphia. and police bust a cyclist who was riding on the expressway during the morning commute. but the big story on "action news" tonight is harvey bearing down on the gulf coast of texas. it is now a category three hurricane. and officials say a storm surge has already begun near corpus christi. millions of people lie in the path of this storm and a substantial number of them have already evacuated their homes. others have loaded up with supplies to support four or five days indoors. let's get the latest on the actual storm from

meteorologist cecily tynan and accuweather. cecily, they're saying this could be the worst storm this country has seen in decades. >> jim, you think about hurricane katrina and the devastation it caused to louisiana. well, this storm could be katrina for texas. it's big enough, it's going to be very slow moving. the actual center of the storm, if you look right here you can see the eye is very close, it's only 50 miles east-southeast of corpus christi, it's very close to the barrier islands. it's moving northwest at 10 miles an hour so do the math. this likely will be making landfall before midnight eastern time tonight and with it we're looking at the potential for catastrophic flooding. if you look at this in 3-d you can see the high cloud top. you can see this is a massive storm. the eye itself is 28 miles across. tropical storm force winds extend nearly 300 miles across this storm and likely will actually get bigger as it moves inland. so this is the radar and you can see that houston corpus christi already getting hit
