galveston, texas. it's after brutal storm and it's going to get worse before it gets better. it's friday night and the big story on "action news" is the potential for catastrophic events with hurricane harvey on the verge of landfall. this is corpus christie, the primary target at this hour. officials don't know how many residents heeded strong recommendations to evacuate their homes. county officials say they have not seen the travel inland they would have expected. the city is confident pumps can clear out the storm water if water inundates downtown. communities throughout the gulf coast are bracing for their own problems. we haven't seen video from houston, but the city is

dangerously flood prone and could get 20-inches or more. the port is closed keeping luxury liners and passengers out at sea. cecily tynan is monitoring the storm and has more from accuweather. hurricane harvey is maximum sustained 130 miles per hour. it's slowed its forward motion moving at eight miles per hour at last report. rockford emergency management texas with people trapped inside. this storm will sit there for

days. i want to show you wind gusts from the center. galveston reporting 40 miles per hour. can't report from the station because the power has been shutdown but we have storm trackers reporting maximum wind gusts 140 miles per hour making landful near rockford right now. this is the first to hit texas since karla in 1961. once it moves inland, it will stall along the coast. what that means, the storm surge of six to 12 feet continues for days. we are looking at epic amounts of rain falling from the sky, some areas 30-inches of rain, a year's worth of rain in a matter of days. we'll talk about this storm system for a long time because it will likely effect the area well into next week. we have the local forecast later

on. jim? >> let's go to "action news" reporter jeff chirico at international airport. what are arriving passengers saying about all of this? >> jim, we saw a number of flights from houston. the paperings had plans to fly to philadelphia. the storm pushed their plans up a day or two. their thoughts are with those they left behind. >> i'm lucky to get out of there. >> university of pennsylvania student jennifer lee is one of those that got one of the final flights out of texas for days. she will start classes while her family rides out the storm. >> definitely concerned. everyone is kind of concerned about what's going to happen during the storm, flooding, and what's going to happen

afterwards. >> as flights arrive from houston, passengers express uncertainty about what they'll see when they return. >> we live north of the city. our home is fine. people in the city and apartments on the streets, they are going to be not in good shape if the storm stays. >> the boards don't show it but airlines have grounded 200 flights across testify country waving rebooking fees as travelers scramble to get out. >> they were asking people to volunteer to stay back. >> did anyone volunteer? >> i don't think so so. >> marty due began cut short his trip to see his daughter's family. he remains optimistic they'll be spared the worst of it. they are on high ground. i think they'll be okay. >> major airlines are offering travel vouchers to those flying to the area.

to help. you can follow the track of hurricane harvey at "6abc".com. we'll be streaming ktrk's live coverage from texas all weekend long. >> other news at this hour, firefighters got a three alarm blaze under control in sharon hill but not before it did a great deal of damage to an apartment building and people's lives. trish hartman is on the 400 block of sharon avenue. what is the situation there now? >> well, jim, crews are securing the scene. the fire was placed under control around 9:00 p.m. the building was then torn down. this is what is left on sharon avenue, 14 people are displaced and dozens of others have been evacuated from nearby buildings. >> diana live on the third floor of the apartment building on sharon avenue and says she lost

everything. >> i went to walk my dog and next thing you know, my boyfriend hears pop, pop, pop. he's like there's smoke coming from your apartment. i ran as fast i could. >> crews responded to reports of an explosion at the back of the building around 2:30 p.m. one resident was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. flames shot from the roof and thick smoke flooded the area. >> when i came out all you could see is thick black smoke. you couldn't come through. you had to take the long way around. >> the neighborhood, it was like a smoke bomb went off. you couldn't see anything. >> angela was at work when the fire started. her two cats are presumed dead. >> i hope they didn't suffer. i hope they went quick if they were going to go. >> six apartments made up the three story building. crews say it's the first time

the eye wall. we have reports of wind gusts at 140 miles per hour in rock port. the storm is about 300-miles across. it's been a long time since texas was hit by a category four hurricane. two days ago it was a tropical depression. it ramped up fast, pressure is slow moving northwest seven miles per hour. it will continue to weaken. maximum wind gusts 160 miles per hour. talking about a category 4 hurricane, this can cause tremendous wind damage, storm surge damage and since it's stalling, it will cause a lot of
