>> [whipping winds] >> hurrican harvey is wreaking havoc across southeastern texas t. it made landfall at 11:00 p.m. and continues to unleash it's furry with punishing winds and lane. christie ileto joins us, "action news" has the latest on hurrican harvey it is lashing the gulf coast of texas with damaging winds and torrential rainfall. >> the storm made landfall as a category four and weakened to a category two. it slammed ashore north of corpus christi.

we are seeing pictures of damage left behind by by the storm. trees are down and what appears to be a wall has collapsed from the wind. signs on the ground, officials say they won't be able to assess the damage until daylight. here's more from houston. >> reporter: hurrican harvey roaring on to the gulf coast. >> the best way to describe it is a continue can being kicked down the road. >> reporter: the strongest in the u.s. in more than a decade. >> this is not going to be quick one and done we're not measuring in inches of rain, but feet of rain. >> reporter: residents of texas and mississippi and louisiana getting hit the hardest. rock port texas in its path. trees on roads, buildings destroyed and emergency crews facing difficults -- difficulties standing to the damage. >> we have not been able to get

out and see what we've got going, but it's not looking good. >> reporter: the mayor urged those staying behind to write their scattered -- social securs on their arm with a sharpy. >> you hear the wind, you don't hear the rain, but the rain is going on. you can hear the boards on a the house shaking. >> reporter: winds so fierce they rattled the ceiling tiles at our affiliate. governor activating 100 members of the national guard and pleading with residents who didn't evacuate to have a plan. >> they need to prepared to be without power an maybe have inadequate access to food and supplies for couple of days. >> reporter: tornado watch is in effect for parts of texas and louisiana until tomorrow. crews are on the ground emergency crews trying to assess

the damage. in rock port people are are beig taken to the county jail after a roof of a housing complex collapsed. >> we've been monitoring the monster storm for day, we continue to track its path as it unleashes winds abbey rain on the gulf coast of texas. >> chris sowers is at the "action news" big board with the latest. >> reporter: hurrican harvey became the first hurricane to hit the united states since 2005 that was about 12 years ago when katrina struck in new orleans. it's the first hurricane category 4 to hit the coast of texas that was carla. it made landfall in san jose island, quat -- category 4

moving with gusts up to 140 miles per hour. the strengths extend from the center 35 miles per hour. it's a huge rainmaker. flipped it over to storm tracker 6 live, the feeder bands off the gulf of mexico, the heaviest winds in the reds, oranges and yellows. it came here the northern side, where the worst part of the storm hit. that where we're seeing the wall of water, what we call the storm surge up to 12 feet. the barrier islands were flooded. now we're seeing the heavy rains fall on top of that. on the other side, the winds blow this way, it's an offshore flow, the flooding has been kept to a minimum south of corpus christi. it is this area right here that we worry about with the heavy driving rains and flooding. rainfall totals up to this point are yes, impressive.

7.1, houston, 5.4. victoria, 4 inches of rain already. the problem with the storm, as we look at the spaghetti plots, each line representing a hurricane model, it doesn't know where it wants to go over the next several days. it drifts over southeastern texas as a result, some areas could see 25 to 35 inches of rain. isolated months moo it is not up to -- isolated amounts up to 40 inches, when i come back we'll have the forecast for the delaware and lehigh valleys. >> hurrican harvey is having an impact in our area, flights in and out of the airports because of the storm's path have have bn canceled. jeff chirico spoke to those who had to make changes in their

plans because of the harvey. >> reporter: jennifer lee is counting her blessings she got a final flight out of houston for days, she'll start class while her family in texas rides out a potentially catastrophic storm. >> everybody is concerned about what's going 0 happen during the storm, the level of flooding and what will happen afterwards. >> reporter: as flights arrived from houston, passengers express uncertainty about what they will see when they return. >> we live north of the city, our home is fine, the people who are in the city in the apartments, on the streets, they are going to be not in good shape if the storm stays. >> reporter: the boards don't show it, but airlines preemptively grounded 200 flights across the country. >> they were offering people in new orleans to stay back. >> reporter: did anyone

street early this morning. the men tied up the family and stole a safe. police are looking for the suspects. time 6:07 a.m. new information to tell you about this morning. philadelphia police are investigating a shooting they call suspicious. according to investigators is a driver who was rushing the shooting victim to penn presbyterian hospital actual flagged down police. he said the 22-year-old was shot near the intersection of greenway avenue and cemetarywesa after 2:00 a.m. police assisted with transporting the victim to the hospital. he is in critical condition. investigator say they found a ski mask in the shooting victim's car. delaware county, firefighters battle a three-alarm blaze at an apartment building in sharon hill. chopper 6 hd was over the 1,000 block. flames shot through the roof and thick smoke flooded the area.

one resident was taken to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation. >> i came out all you could see was black smoke. >> the whole neighborhood just it was like a smoke bomb went off, you couldn't see anything. >> the fire was placed under control around 9:00 p.m. the building was immediately torn down, the red cross is helping 14 people affected by the blaze. police have issued an arrest warrant for 35-year-old brendan hay. surveillance images of the suspect were released earlier. police say he was behind the wheel of the white jeep when 53-year-old anne broad -- brodrick was struck and killed. police recovered the vehicle in delaware county. president trump has blocked

the rain turned this street in corpus christi into a river. two inches of rain fell there. that is expected to increase as the rainfall continues. and right now this is a live picture in gallon -- gallon gallon -- galveston, texas. >> reporter: it is beginning to weaken now, now that it's over land, once it moves inland, it loses energy, warm waters it needs to intensify. winds are down to 90 miles per hour. we're seeing rain with the system. let's start you out with sky6 live hd here looking over the commodore barry bridge. we have a gorgeous weekend coming up for the delaware and lehigh valleys. high temperatures today and tomorrow only topping out in the upper 70s and we've lost that humidity, the humidity that has

just been a thorn in the side for the last several weeks in the region, all that tremendous muggy air, the dewpoints in the 60s and 70s all that stuff is to the south across the gulf coast. we'll enjoy a nice weekend overall. hurrican harvey it is has come onshore north of the rock port in texas north of corpus christi of there's the center of the circulation right here. what you're looking at here is the infrared colored satellites. you can see the brighter reds wrapped around the center of the circumstance -- circulation. it is moving slowly that means we'll see a tremendous amount of flooding. 90 miles per hour, category 1. pressure 976 millibars drifting off to the northwest, this is

the scale that we rate hurricanes. it started out as a category four when it made landfall. it was the first category four to hit the united states in the 12 years, and the first to hit texas since carla. category one storm in terms of winds maximum sustained winds up to 90 miles per hour. as we look at at the positioning of harvey we have a blocking area of high pressure off the maps pushing off the four corner states, the jet stream is up to the north, across the heartlands of the nation getting into the ohio valley. basically there's no steering mechanism to push the storm along. it will sit and spin and do a loop deloop over the next three to five days. the ladder portion of next week it's -- latter portion of next

week it's hanging around. we're talking about the surge and the flooding for coastal portions of texas. we're looking anightmare scenario setting up for texas. the rainfall totals is something i've never seen, victoria seen close to ten inches of rain. we're forecasting 28-inch. the national hurricane center this area in the yellow could see anywhere from 20 to 30 inches of rain with isolated heavier amounts up to 40 inches of rain to give you an idea how much water this is, if it was snow it would be 400 inches of snow. can you imagine that. don't worry we'll not see that this winter. just to give you an idea how much rain we're talking in texas. back home, allentown, 53 degrees. poconos, 46. feeling like fall in the mountains. philadelphia, 67. trenton, 62. millville, 62 on the boards in atlantic city, 64. there's no humidity out there at

forecast. >> reporter: good morning to you, i'm sure many of you don't have a problem with that, as well. it's been a hot humid summer across the delaware and lehigh valleys. >> reporter: hurricane harvey there's victoria, heaviest part of the storm is indicated by the red cloud tops spike spiking 40, 50,000 feet. the cruising attitude for a jetliner is 39,000 feet. the feeder bands from corpus christi up to houston texas. future tracker 6, we zoomed into the area. here's corpus christi. this buoy report which is just in the middle of one of the feeder bands coming onshore is seeing maximum stained winds out of the of the southeast at 40 to 5 miles per hour. some of the gusts up to 7 # miles per --

77 miles per hour. this is where we're seeing 90 to 100-mile an hour sustained winds, the feeder bands we're seeing the heavier rains and good gusts. they extend into houston, texas. racism totals look like this because the storm is going to meanders about over the next several days. some of the rainfall totals could exceed 30 inches in southeastern, texasment victoria picked up ten forecasting up to 28. hurricane center has isolated heavier months to 40 inches. catastrophic flooding is expected north of corpus christi the national hurricane center is using wording like this, extended power outages and some neighborhoods could be uninhas notable for weeks is -- ininhabitable for weeks if not months, that's the same wording they crew used for hurricane katrina.

i will be back with updates. hurricane harvey hit texas late friday night, but it continues to drop heavy amounts of rainfall. >> this is a shot of galveston, texas. looks like the rain has stopped, but the wind is blowing things around there. we don't know the full stenlt of the damage -- stenlt of the damage, but we have seen buildings damaged and roofs torn off homes and trees and power lines toppled over. much of the area is in the dark, we're waiting on the daylight to get an idea of damage. 200,000 people are without power. we got video of a massive fire that destroyed three homes near galveston. no word on how it started. witnesses say the strong winds helped the fire to spread. >> it's constant howl, you hear the wind, you don't hear the rain, even though the rain is going on. you can hear the boards on the house shaking.

>> frightening time for the folks in texas. this is video missouri city texas where possible tornado touched down there. you can sue see the damage. looks like the roof ripped off the home there. we're being told minor injuries have been reported there, president donald trump whole visit the area next week has assigned a disaster declaration for the state of texas. >> in the delaware we'll see a low impact from hurricane harvey most of which will affect travelers. airlines have grounded 200 flights across the area this weekend. major airlines are offering travel vouchers for those flying to the affected areas. if you're heading to the airport check the websites before you leave home. >> hurricane harvey is having an impact on petroleum

what happens wuk see the -- owe you can see the eye close over victoria, that's a sign that the storm is starting to weaken that's why the winds dropped down to 90 miles per hour. the latest spaghetti plots looks like, each line represents a forecast model, we want to see these lines come together that would show an agreement within the modeling. these lines are all over the place that means the models have no idea where it's going to go over the next 3 to 5 days. we don't see any system that's going to approach from the west to the north to kick this out of here it will sit and spin for days, saturday we'll see rainfall totals again 30 to 40 inches in parts of the area. as we look at the water vapor shot this is florida right here. we have invest 92l a small low pressure system over tampa and moves into the open waters of atlantic. temperatures are very, very warm, temperatures in the 80s,
