"action news" sunday morning, the deluge continues in texas, this is new video from the coast guard towns on the gulf coast are flooded by what could end up being several feet of rain by what is now tropical storm harvey. we learned a woman died after being trapped in flooding. houston one of the country's largest cities caught in the middle of this.

good morning to you, it is sunday, nydia han is off, alicia vitarelli joins us. >> the pictures tell the stories. >> rock port a small community where the heaviest damage happened. two deaths are confirmed that rain is expected to fall for several more days. >> this is a brand new piece of video right here, it shows a band of firefighters from philadelphia in the harrisburg area helping with the rescues in texas. >> so many couldn't get in place to help out because the wind and rain was too dangerous to venture out. >> you can see all the rain move very, very slowly, the system is hanging over southeast texas. >> all eyes on the storm, meteorologist chris sowers has been on top of it all weekend long, chris what is the latest from accuweather. >> reporter: the latest it is has weakened from a hurricane

which was a category four down to a tropical storm. the flooding rains will continue for the next several days unfortunately as the storm continues to sit and spin across southeastern texas. there's the center, actually, 25 miles per hour south of austin, 50 miles east/southeast of san antonio texas. houston is getting pounded at this point. we're seeing rainfall rates 2 to 4 inches an hour. we have a tornado watch box across the houston area and southeastern through galveston and west of lake charles and alexandria in louisiana. the brighter reds is where the heaviest rains are falling. the center is well off to the southwest. the heaviest rains are falling in downtown houston. the purple shades representing 2 to 4 inches of rain per hour. the rainfall totals are very, very impressive. league city within the houston

area, shy of 2 feet. clear creek, 21.4. pasadena, 7.72 inches. barry bayou, 16.8 inches of rain. and elenger receiving 14.83 inches of rain. this is the second part of the storm that continues to spin, the result will be a tremendous amount of rain over the next several days. monday night it's pretty much sitting southwest of victoria, it will take it through friday, east of dallas, texas. during the overnight hours on friday, again, the winds not a big concern, but we're talking about at least five more days of heavy torrential rain. what we're expecting here on top of the rain that has already fallen an additional one to two feet in victoria and houston areas.

a tremendous amount of rain falling, the flooding will be anything less than catastrophic. i'll be back with the rest of the forecast for harvey and our beautiful weather in the delaware valley. >> harvey is sticking to the script. as forecasted came the destructive amounts of wind and days of rain expected. >> two people have died as a result of the storm, it's too early to assess all the damage because this is an on going weather system buses made the treck through a flooded road in houston, the flooding is overwhelming streets there, as you can see the city's mayor pleaded with people to stay off the roads because some are impassable. this is coming in from missouri city texas outside of houston. a tornado took out a chunk of a shopping center. 50 other homes in the town had their roof damaged. our sister station ktrk in

state capital under a cloud of darkness and under water. this suv no match for mother nature. texas governor greg abbott lending a handle. >> we'll take care of our fellow techians, but we do -- texans, but we do it as a team. >> reporter: in the meantime, the director of fema said he is monitoring the situation and send down rescuers, but that could several days before that happens. from houston, natasha barrett, abc news. >> 40 members of the pennsylvania urban search and rescue team are on the road heading to texas. 20 of them are firefighters and other members of firefighters from across the state. they loaded tractor-trailers and other trucks with water rescue equipment. they will hope texas fire crews

search homes and buildings for missing residents. they are bringing rescue dogs and their handlers, it will take 22 hours to get to texasment american red cross of eastern pennsylvania is looking for donations for folks struggling because of the weather conditions and the damage due to harvey. to make a ten dollar donation text the word harvey to 90999. you will hear from a local volunteer on the ground in texas in the next half-hour. 6:07 a.m., new information to tell you about this morning, a man is in critical condition after he was hit by an suv in north philadelphia. the impact at broad and susquehanna shattered the front windshield of the suv. a 38-year-old man was hit crossing broad street in the middle of the block at 12:45 a.m. he was rushed to the hospital with a head injury and two broken legs. the driver stopped and is cooperating with police. from our delaware newsroom,

firefighters face add battle contending with a house fire in new castle county. this video was shot by an "action news" viewer, the home is located on the unit block of north trail in brandywine hundred, the home was severely damaged, but everyone is okay. >> the susan g.komen walk is coming to a close today at the philadelphia navy yard. since 2005, they have raised $68 million to find a cure for breast cancer. philadelphia soul are back-to-back arena league champions. >> the sole won it on their home turf. it was a game you saw live on 6abc. >> a whole lot of excitement and awesome moment this was, the players celebrating as confetti rained down from the rafters at

system gets, at this point we're not looking at anything tropical, it will be a sub tropical area of low pressure moving up the eastern seaboard. today, mostly sunny, 78 degrees in the lehigh valley, reading, 79. philadelphia, 79. millville, same number, dover, 78 degrees. 76 in cape may. on the boards in atlantic city, also 76 degrees. here's the latest on what is now tropical storm harvey. maximum sustained winds down to 45 miles per hour. center of circulation northwest of victoria texas. the heaviest rain falling where you're seeing the bright red. this is the infared cloud cover tops. from houston to lake charles, louisiana they are seeing this tremendous rain. and this came onshore, it was a category four strength it was

the first time time ands 1961 when -- since 1961 when carla came onshore. over the next day several days, the problem continues to be there's no steering currents here, so the storm will sit and spin and spin and spin, right throw friday it's over southeastern texas we're looking at winds at 30 miles per hour. over the next 3 to 5 days, this storm goes anywhere. the areas that are seeing the heavy rains today are seeing it tomorrow, tuesday and wednesday, until the storm gets out of here by the end of the week. additional rainfall this is for victoria texas to give you an idea. they are seeing 2 feet of rain and the modeling is printing out a foot and 17 inches additionally on top of the one to two feet of rain you already have. a tremendous amount of flooding continues to be the biggest

rising in houston and cities across the state's gulf coast. the state's soaking may last days leaving towns in ruins. alicia vitarelli is in for nydia han, of course we're following tropical storm harvey which is not done with texas just yet. >> chris sowers is watching the storm and has the latest for us. >> reporter: harvey may be spinning around wednesday thursday and friday, there's no steering currents to push this storm along. very similar to what we were talking about yesterday, nothing has changed with the thinking it is over land now, it is beginning to weaken, it is no longer a hurricane. we have to wait and see where

this wants to go. in the meantime we'll see the heavy rains on the northern and western sides here. what we've done we're showing you the infared satellite loop and showing you the cloud tops. the reds is where most of the rain is falling. it's east/northeast to the center of circulation west of victoria, texas. these reds and oranges represent rainfall rates anywhere from 2 to 4 inches an hour. some locations in this part of the country picked up almost 20 inches of rain and we're expecting an additional one to two feet here because the storm isn't moving all that much. the latest stats, 50 miles per hour east/southeast of san antonio, texas the winds, 45 miles per hour, we're seeing gusts up to 50, 55 miles per hour, but the wind are not a concern with the storm any more. it's where is it going to go? you can see how large the cone

is, which is giving me an indication that the national hurricane center doesn't have a good handle on where the storm is going to track. you would like to see the cone tighter that would represent agreement in the modeling. by friday it is over southeastern portions of texas. that's another good three to five days. little movement expected over the next five days, very little downpours continue in that time frame, catastrophic flooding over 40 inches. >> wide area of southeast texas gets hammered by a deluge of water. you can see the images right here. this is a stalled tropical storm harvey. the most recent coast guard video shows floodwaters between corpus christi and houston, texas. the storm's powerful winds knocked out power to a quarter of a million households. harvey is blamed for killing two and injuring 14 others. one was a woman in houston

texas, americancy workers say she -- emergency workers say she appeared to have tried to escape from her car. high winds and floodwaters damaged almost every building in the town of rock port. the coast guard is warning evacuated residents to stay out of the area. >> the storm is not over, it's stagnated, it's a slow moving storm, do not come back into the affected areas. >> we hope that people he'd -- heed the warning. harvey has been downgraded to a tropical storm it continues to pound the area with torrential rains that are expected to continue for days to come. the center of the storm swept through the town of arkansas pass. >> that's when everything went to hell, bouncing and sheer

hell. >> president donald trump met with officials for updates on the storm. he praised the coordination between federal state and local governments. >> in disasters like harvey, people left in shambles by the storm, need a lot of help. "action news" was in northeast philadelphia as 20 members of the philadelphia fire department and 20 others first responders from pennsylvania packed you mean and started the day heading to texas. they will help with water rescues and scour homes looking for people who may be trapped. a mid the devastating scenes in texas, the american red cross is doing what it does best helping those in their most vulnerable moments. trish hartman has that part of the story. on the third floor of the american red cross buildings in center city. >> volunteers are fielding hundreds of calls from

texas as the storm pummels the state. many of them are people looking for shelter. >> you're helping people on the worst day of their lives, but you're talking to them on their worst days of their lives. people calling in tears and freaking out, you do the best you can to work through that. >> reporter: the american red cross of pennsylvania sent two volunteers to texas, we spoke to one of them on the phone. it. >> makes you feel good when you see how you're helping niece people and it makes you realize how lucky you are none of these storms have hit us up there like other areas of the country. >> reporter: fred is in the houston now preparing emergency response vehicles, when the storm dies down he'll head to corpus christi. >> there were kitchens down around there, our vehicles will run out and feed people. we'll make sure they are running all the safety items are working

on them. we don't want anyone to get hurt. >> reporter: a way for folks here to help donating blood. >> people who give blood in our community well e we -- we will t that blood to texas because they will be challenged with supplies. spca said it has helped shelter animals before and they could be called upon again. red cross officials of new jersey are encouraging people to donate money or their time if they would like to help. reporting in center city, trish hartman channel 6 "action news." >> time 6:36 a.m., it was a close call for ems crews in west philadelphia. they found themselves caught in crossfire as they rushed a patient to the hospital. "action news" reporter, annie mccormick has the story. >> reporter: emergency responders in the city of philadelphia say situations like this don't happen like this all the time, but they are not rare.

in this case the first responder and the patient were not hurt, the first responders went back to work the same night. >> if the attendant was sitting in there, they would have been missed by mere inches. >> reporter: ray a trustee of local 22 firefighters union is talking about the bullet hole you can see in this picture. the stray bullet pierced medic 40 before 10:00 p.m. with a paramedic and emt in the back tending a patient. >> they took the appropriate position got down on the floor and protected the patient and the gunfire ceased. >> reporter: the deputy commissioner is commending the paramedic an emt action. a man pulled a gun in the street near 51st and market and fired. one bullet hit a man involved in the street fight. that victim was taken to the

hospital. police are looking for the shooter. >> 52nd an market is a busy intersection and numerous people could have shot in this situation. >> reporter: the bullet hit the electric panel. the first responders arrived with another ambulance and took the patient to the hospital. >> it's unfortunate a lot of times that our people are put in these positions. when you hear firefighters take their hands in their lives everyday, they don't realize our paramedics and emts take their lives in their hands everyday. >> reporter: the shooting victim in the case was taken to pen presbyterian hospital in stable condition. he was later arrested on weapons and drug violation. the shooter that they say is responsible for hitting medic 40 with the stray bullet is still on the loose. reporting in grays ferry, annie mccormick channel 6 "action news." >> the head of the fraternal order of police says he is pleased that the names of officers involved in police

involved shootings will not be released at least not for now. fop officials say they successfully obtained an emergency court order to stop mayor kenny's policy of releasing names within 72 hours of a shooting. this followed a mass demonstration outside a northeast philadelphia officer's earlier this week. >> it's important to our officers on the street, their families, as well. you saw what happened the other day, this was a result of a city releasing the name of the officer and eventually they are getting the address, so his family has been going through hell. >> the temporary injunction barring the release of those names without the judge's approval will remain in effect until a hearing in september. 6:39 a.m., much more to come on "action news" sunday morning. from lunch boxes to backpacks we're helping you green your back to school supplies. we'll run down a list of things good for your kids and the planet. army navy football battle

sunday morning, 6:42 a.m., this is a live picture from the houston space center as we continue to track harvey and the devastation caused by harvey. the folks in houston, texas will be dealing with torrential rain over the next few days, flooding a big concern. we'll keep an eye on it for you. >> reporter: the damage will get much, much worse. we were talking about this yesterday, this is an area that typically floods during an everyday thunderstorm. it's five to ten feet above sea level. imagine what happens you get one to three inch of rain for five days. it will be unbelievable by the time we get into thursday and friday. in the meantime, let's give you a shot of sky6 live hd, a gorgeous day coming up. clear skies this morning we'll have a couple of puffy cumulus clouds later this afternoon. today mostly sunny skies, comfortable in the humidity department and temperatures struggling just to get out of

the 70s. it's 62 degrees in philadelphia right now. comfortably cool. wait until you see the numbers north and west, feeling like fall in the poconos. dewpoint, 53. no humidity, wind out of the north at 3 miles per hour. pressure holding steady, 30.24 inches. the ocean temperature, mild, 73 degrees. 46 in the mountains that's a little chilly. 53 in allentown. you get into the wilks-berre scranton area, 43. satellite and radar, high pressure plant the right about there, maybe a little bit off to the north. this whole area today will have another very nice day, they will enjoy lots of sunshine across the mid atlantic states and the northeast. just a gentle breeze out of the north/northwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour. there's a lot to talk about as we go wider across the country. the jet stream or the storm track runs like this, all the

big storms are to the south there's nothing to push them along, that's why harvey is having a difficult time moving right now. it's moving two miles per hour off the north/northeast. it's at a crawl. it will be at a crawl for the next three to five days. this is invest 92l most of this drags this up the eastern seaboard, but a cold front by the end of the week should knock it out to sea before it intensifies, it's something to watch over the next several days. tropical storm harvey, maximum sustained winds 45 miles per hour. houston getting into lake charles and louisiana a tremendous amount of rain. they are seeing rainfall rates 2 to 4 inches an hour. it is moving south/southwest it is moving this direction at one mile an hour. pressure is rising. you get the idea over the next

several days it will drift to the north, at a position friday night somewhere off the southeast of dallas. we're talking five state days of heavy rain. parts of area down through here have picked up one to two feet of rain. 22.89 inches is expected in houston, giving them a grand total of close to 40 inches when the storm pulls out. lake charles we've increased that, as well, 10.5, victoria, an additional 1. back here at home, poconos looks beautiful. 74. jersey shore, bright blue skies, comfortable clouds and nice day high of 76. again that ocean water temperature, 73. there's a low risk of rip currents today, as the system off the florida coast moves up the eastern seaboard the rip current risk increases tomorrow
