harvey including a police officer caught in flooding while on his way to work over the weekend and the death toll is expected to rise. more than 2000 others have been rescued by the coast guard and one area in houston got nearly 50 inches of rain, the most rainfall from a tropical system over the u.s. main land. we are following the local relief efforts and tracking where harvey is next. first chad pradelli on the ground in houston for us tonight. >> yes rick, we are called at rescue row one area that is heavy et hit and one area with the heaviest -- many search and rescue operations, this family just showed up on the kayaks and they were out there and she saved this dog. we saw a lot of stranded

animals. >> what did you find here? >> puppy little girl. >> really high water and neighborhood and nobody there. >> you see a lot of strands animals with this hurricane. and stranded families, this family was just rescued by a good samaritan in the houston area, trying to help people out. look at the floodwaters, this is waist deep and moments ago i see heavy trucks with tires up to the tops of the vehicles, making their way through the waters and getting into the neighborhoods to do more rescues, we spoke to a woman a short time ago. she was in tears, and she was trapped in a trailer park. >> the texas ride trailer park. >> how long has she been there,? >> the whole storm. no lights. >> when did you talk to her?

charles at the texas liouisiana border harvey continues to move. winds are 50 miles per hour that is up just a bit but the rained emtend now to the panhandle of florida. as the tropical rains continue to flood in from the gulf of mexico as the storm is now just starting to move a little bit faster, to the north-northeast. but still sitting near houston and downtown houston, light rain and the edge of the rain is just to the west of houston but cedar bayou just to the east of houston, still being inundated with this very torrential rains. that is where the record was set for the most rainfall in history. they have now picked up 51.88 inches of of rainfall.

over 10 inches a day beating the previous record of 48 inches from one tropical system from amelia in 1978. it made landfall in corpus christi still directing to the east of houston and making landfall late tonight into tomorrow and in texas. it goes to the north and east. and starts to pick up steam into thursday and friday. heading to the tennessee valley and ohio valley and bringing rain for the weekend. and speaking of rain. we are deal weighing solid area of green i-95 to the south and east. it's one nasty wet day here with beach erosion and coastal flooding. we'll talk more about this system and harvey for the upcoming holiday weekend in the seven day. >> thank you we'll check back in later. abc is hosting a network wide day of giving on thursday. 6 abc is joining in the effort.

"action news" continues. >> hello again here is what is happening on "action news" tonight. the waters continue to swamp much of southeastern texas leaving thousands of texas clinging to high ground before help arrives. that is tropical storm harvey continues to churn of the coast. volunteers are answering the call in answering disaster relief efforts this texas. yes smoother skies for one airlines for one group. and texas continues to suffer under several feet of floodwaters, more than 17,000 people are turning to shelters for a dry place to sleep and food and clothing.

cannot get through to 911 and they sent out an email to all residents asking for a doctor or nurse, the plan was to move the woman to the second floor and out of harms way and the houston fire department showed up and made a human train to guide her to a waiting military truck to get her to a medical facility. and getting pets and livestock to a facility look at this cattle drive through floodwaters in beaumont. they waded through waist deep water and got cows across the state highway. and the governor spoke account concerns of the state. eight people are dead and countless others are now homeless and the damage done to structures and home will likely break records. >> re focused now on saving every life we can and then help

with the evacuation and process and in typical texas fashion we'll rebuild and may go it better than ever. >> before harvey hit texas and governor abbott declared a presidential action declaration so rebuilding can begin. well, the houston mega church led by televangelist joel osstein opened the doors to people seeking shelter. osstein received criticism for not using the massive church for a shelter because of the sheer size and location high above floodwaters. osstein tweeted out his decision to open the doors this morning. he wrote victoria and i care deeply about our fellow houstonans and lakewood's doors are open and we are receiving anyone that needs shelter. >> the opening of the lakewood church is a welcome site to thousands. five bus loads of evacuees

for victims of harvey, and it's this thursday starting at 4:00 here on 6 abc. world news tonight with david muir continues coverage of hurricane harvey includingests to house thousands of evacuees and rescue those trapped in floodwaters. following "action news" at 6:00. police are working to track down a thief that did not just want cash from a local chinese takeout. cameras were rolling as the suspect parked his bike outside, in southeast philadelphia. this past sunday evening, once inside the man appropriated a 23-year-old woman pointing something at her back. he stole her cell phone money and food. >> the fbi and philadelphia police are asking for help finding a bank robber that targeted a bank in the middle of the day. these are from inside of the

santander bank on walnut street. a man walked in and acted like he had a weapon and demanded money from the teller and after he got the cash in a bag he ran out. nobody was hurt. if you recognize the suspect authorities want to hear from you. a police officer inadversely caused a shelter in place alert at princeton university. the school issued the alert on campus. it was their own plain clothes officer escorting a group on a museum tour. the officer had a badge on and gun in his holster but never told museum staff he was there. the alert was lifted 10 mined later and the officer is cooperating in the investigation. fire officials are investigating an attempted arson in kensington and that happens along the 1800 block of frankford avenue. people tried to burn down the

we are dealing with a flood advisory until this evening, a small sliverer along 95 the entire state of delaware in extreme southern new jersey. and not a lot of rain but minor drainage problems here where you have some drains backing up and leaves collecting and dealing with ponding on the roadways, and not looking at significant flooding with the rain today across our area. as we look at stormtracker 6 live double scan we are starting to break the rain apart especially to the north and west. still dealing with it wilmington and trenton. a little yellow popping up showers south of the city and the heaviest rain in delaware county. northern newcastle county and philadelphia county and stretches up towards trenton and mercer county. moderate rainfall at this point. we are starting to see the edge of that rain breaking apart in malvern and paoli, that sinks to

the south and east here. to matter what it's a cool day in allentown. reading, philadelphia and millville to the shore. everybody is stuck with the 60s today and the poconos 56 degrees, and remind ourselves it's technically august. low pressure to the south spinning up the rain and hammering the shore. with the northeasterly wind beach erosion back bay flooding and rip currents. and swells of 6 to 10 feet today. and all of this starts to lift away. by 9:00, midnight, starts to fade away on the radar scope, 9:00 a.m. we start to see the sunshine appear and that continues into tomorrow afternoon. in fact, 78 allentown philadelphia, millville 77 degrees, watch for dangerous rip currents tomorrow and the storm over the open waters will churn up the swells for another day

tomorrow despite the weather above is improving. harvey's remnants are coming through the tennessee valley and aim over our area in new england fort weekend. doesn't mean flooding rains and a washout for the weekend and we'll get a round of rain up to an inch it improves the second half of the holiday weekend. low humidity and it's warm and maybe an isolated storm with a front on thursday of 85 and sets up for a beautiful mark on friday. 73, low humidity and rain develops on saturday. again possibly up to an inch of rain. not looking at any sort of significant flooding by us over the weekend and sun returning on sunday and the best day is labor day and 73 degrees. more "action news" coming your way.
