stranded. tuesday night, jim's off. i'm rick williams. the big story is hope in the face of harvey. let's go to lana zach in houston. >> good evening. rescues continue in houston and communities affected by harvey throughout the gulf coast. for the first time they see a glimmer of hope as bayous and reservoirs are starting to decline. the sun peeked out of houston's sky. there have been nine confirmed deaths including houston police officer steve perez, drowning in flood waters, two days shy of his 61st birthday. >> it was too treacherous to look for him. >> the rescues totaling 13,000

and still they pour in. more than a thousand in houston are waiting for help. >> linda says she was stranded in her car with rising flood water for two days. >> all i can say is there are angels out here. help is pouring in by the truckload and there is still more need. >> it's gut wrenching. what can i do for my neighbors? >> we encourage people if they need shelter to come here to seek shelter. we may not have the amenities for them like a cot. those in new orleans are using sandbags on the 12th anniversary of katrina. >> it evoked memories and

heartbreak. >> houston's mayor says no city welcomed more from katrina than houston. >> reporting live from houston, lana zach. back to you. >> chad pradelli hit the ground in texas surveying the flood zone. he's facing an emergency situation in the suburbs. chad, what is the latest where you are in texas tonight? >> >> the evacuees are on busses being taken to the park where the houston texans play. accommodations will be how long, we don't know. we were here because of concerns a chemical plant in crosby would

catch fire. there are explosive concerns because of massive flooding in the region. it was a chemical plant, refrigeration compromised, back up generators. it was a precaution but right now the evacuees are moved to houston. we have been in houston most of the day and have seen all sorts of flooding, devastation and peril. >> the flooding in northeastern houston has been dubbed rescue row. the waist deep water off beltway eight into the neighborhoods looking for people. people like veronica's mother at last check okay. >> she has been without lights since yesterday. >> when was the last time you spoke to her? >> 30 minutes ago. >> what did she say to you?

>> for me not to get her, but i have to get my mom. residents are risking their own lives to find the victims. this young woman and hr family are among those lucky to be found. >> a couple of weeks ago we had to get out. i was trying to keep calm. i was trying to stay strong, but we made it. thank you, everybody. rick we have not seen clean up in the last couple of hours. clean up can begin and likely last years. chad pradelli, "action news," channel6. >> louisiana is bracing for more flooding as tropical storm

harvey takes aim there. low-lying areas were bearably passible. forecasters say another 20-inches could fall. the storm is expected to make landfall at louisiana's border tomorrow morning. louisiana faced hurricane katrina 12 years ago. >> meteorologist adam joseph is in the "action news" weather center with a look at what's ahead tonight for the gulf coast. >> it depends on where you are. houston is beginning to dry out as heavy rain pushes east. tropical storm harvey continues to spin over the open waters of the atlantic, spinning the moisture around the large storm. where you see the brighter reds, beaumont texas, parts of interstate 80, three feet of rain in that part of texas. in houston, it's pouring in

parts of the gulf coast states. in cedar bayou, just east and south of houston, they set the all time record with any tropical system in the lower 48, none to this point has dropped this much rain in one storm, nearly 52-inches over the five day period, previously breaking the record of 48-inches from what was amelia back in 1978 also in the state of texas. it's all because of the erratic path of storm that made landfall friday near corpus christie, looped around and went back over the open waters. it's zig zagging over the area since friday moving northeast six miles per hour, making landfall early tonight and tomorrow morning and as it heads to memphis, then the tennessee valley and for the weekend in a

much-weakened state. i'll let you know what it means for us in the full forecast, which is labor day weekend itself. >> so many dramatic stories of heroism continue to come out of texas in the aftermath of harvey. one man taking to rescue victims there, used to live here. dann cuellar is live in the satellite center with his harrowing story. >> a delaware county native diverted his boat to rescue almost a hundred people, dogs and cats stranded in flood waters. >> he is john mccracken, a native who moved to houston eight years ago. he noticed people threatened by rising flood waters and swept

into action. >> the current was tough to fight. we had people that refused to leave and get saved. i said what did you do? he said i didn't have time to debate it. there were so many people to rescue, he had to move on and get the other people. the former army veteran who did two tours in iraq rescued 49 people, 11 dogs and two cats. after getting his own family out of the way, he went back and rescued four more people. >> i get goose bumps thinking about it. very proud of him. not only did he serve his country, he's doing his civil duty too. >> mccracken refused to be interviewed saying he wasn't looking for publicity. >> i said you wanted to talk to him. he said no. i said why, you are a hero?

he said i'm not a hero. i'm an american. >> he found a dog in the flood waters and couldn't leave it. >> he named it harvey and now it's part of the family. >> mccracken rose above personal tragedy to do heroic work and it's humbling. rick? >> >> dan: , thank you for the report, members of the pennsylvania disaster relief team left the international airport for texas. in camden, the m.d. anderson cooper cancer center has received houston patients there. the hospital in houston is okay but the out patient center has flooding. the blood bank of delmarva is responding to the call from texas for special blood types. >> an update on the five-year-old boy we introduced you to last night at 11:00 who so many are talking about across

ileto is live with all the details new at 11:00. christie? he's being interviewed, but we have learned he was released from prison august 21, and within that week, he's back in cuffs. edward holmes iii was arrested on a tip. >> repair costs estimated in the thousands, police say a day after his spout of vandalism, surveillance cameras caught the 51-year-old entering the camden county police department to report his bike was stolen while he was staying in the shelter. wearing the same clothes as the night before, officials were able to identify the man

responsible for the brazen act of violence. >> when he identified himself to them, it was a no brainer at that point. >> he's still speaking with detectives. he will be taken to the camden county jail. to clear reason for his actions. rick? >> christie, thank you. police in montgomery county need the public's help finding a man and woman that stole $2,100 worth of clothing from dick's sporting good store. they had their children with them. >> not a good example. >> the adults could face child endangerment charges on top of theft charges. the couple fled the scene in a gold vehicle. if you have information you are asked to call police.

adam joseph is in for cecily tynan. >> minor changes as we head into labor day weekend. looking at the weather center right now, it was a gloomy day today, temperatures in the 60s, rain, chilling wind out of the north ayes. it did end on a bright note. bob watts one of the editors here outside of the studios here in channel6. you can see the bright primary rainbow and a secondary rainbow to the north of it there. a glimmer of sunshine and spots before the sunset. as we head into the next couple of days, it's brighter and warmer. despite that, the sky can'ts are going to improve. if you are at the shore this week, a rough surf another day tomorrow with dangerous rip currents. the waves continue to pull in off of a developing storm off

the coast. rain from harvey will be here in time to begin the labor day weekend. temperatures now, 63 philadelphia, 62 allentown. everyone has a chill, damp feeling to the air presently all due to the rain. the rain is beginning to break up north and west even to the south and east, light from dover, vineland, heading into burlington county and there, it starts to fall apart. the low pressure which yesterday the national hurricane center center was debating whether it would be tropical storm irma. it won't be named because it's a cold center. if it was a warm center, they would name it as a tropical entity. it's warming up and it has hurricane force winds with it propagating dangerous swells our way. the morning rush breaks the sun as it moves away, cool starts upper 50s to near 60.

high tomorrow, 10-degrees above today's temperature, back to the upper 70s, clouds and sunshine, rough surf with dangerous rip currents down the shore. then for the beginning of the weekend, harvey, still in the gulf inland thursday into friday and for the beginning of the week right to the delaware valley, no strong winds or flooding rains. we see a round of rain saturday into saturday night. 78-degrees tomorrow. warm thursday, 85 with a cold front ushering in cool weather with sunshine friday, rain developing saturday. up to an inch in spots. no flooding concerns. for the second half of the weekend and labor day itself, warm, humid, 83 with a late day tomorrow and tuesday, partly sunny at 82.

>> thank you, again. many dogs and puppies separated from their owners during hurricane harvey will be looking for homes in the delaware valley. 100 pets were brought from texas to the northeast where they'll hopefully be adopted. darla myers joins us from one of the shelters in north jersey where the animals just arrived. >> darla? >> that's right, the animals got off the vans behind me. they were flown in this afternoon. they have been flying all day long from texas. here's one of dogs that arrived. these are dogs already in texas shelters, up for adoption there but they had to be moved to make room for dogs displaced by the houston floods. all they want to do is walk in

the grass and get settled in. they have had a long day and they want to put the houston floods behind them. the cold damp hangar at the airport is nothing like the deluge the dogs left behind them in texas. >> we know how everyone came out during super storm sandy, so it's important to be there for texas to do what we can. >> 78 dogs left houston to clear the shelters there for animals displaced by the flood. they were loaded on to the plane, brief layover in tennessee and landed this afternoon. their trip chronicled on the facebook page. >> in this block here, we have 21. we have more pods and areas available for them. >> this is where the dogs will sleep tonight. one wing of the st. hubert

welfare center is marked as their temporary home. they asked the madison new jersey shelter to take the dogs in. >> they contacted us to ask if we could take a plane load. so many groups have responded. we may not have that many up for adoption for our program. >> one of them drove two hours from voorhees to give the lone star evacuees a loving home. >> we try to make sure they have great care and commitment and put so much love toward them to make them think it's home. >> rick, as you can see, this sh roscoe. he's getting lots of love in madison, new jersey tonight. some of the dogs go to rescue partners as far as toronto. next week they are expecting another load of dogs from texas.
