good afternoon the big story on "action news" is the death and destruction from hurricane irma. the powerful storm is now barrelling towards the bahamas and south florida after leaving some caribbean islands in shambles. officials say that 90% of the homes on anguilla and barbuda are destroyed. and at least 10 deaths are confirmed. and we are live in miami where people are evacuating ahead of a possible direct hit. >> this storm is no joke, it reduced the island of barbuda to rubble and is expected to head this way. florida's governor is telling people to leave their home as soon as the evacuation is in place. >> hurricane irma is suppose to be the most powerful storm to

travel across the atlantic ocean. and half of puerto rico are without power. and on saint martin scenes of widespread devastation. 185 miles per hour winds tore through the island paradise. up to eight deaths being reported. and on the tiny island of barbuda, officials report 95% of the structures are damaged. >> the entire country has been decimated. >> i have never seen anything like this before. >> people are scrambling to escape from hurricane irma's wrath. hundreds lined up before the grocery store opened its doors. and gas lines are long with many soldout. >> we have to get people out so people can evacuate. >> the governor says expect a long wait but will not get fuel to everyone. >> i am driving around for 30

minutes and my car is on e for the last hour. >> and people are boarding up homes and businesses and officials are ordering mandatory evacuations for low lying areas especially the keys. and urging residents to get out now. >> that is not a storey you can get through. >> residents on both coasts should be prepared to evacuate. abnews miami. many airlines are cutting fairs for travelers trying to get out of irma's past. but as hundreds flee people are heading into it. we are joined now at philadelphia international airport. >> reporter: floridians are scrambling to get out of the state. as you mentioned they are capping prices at $99. that means they are going just as fast forcing evacuees to take to crowded highways.

>> all the gas ran out and people were waiting 45 minutes and prices are high and can't find water anywhere it's crazy. >> travelers were waiting at philadelphia international airport describing stories of chaos rushing to get out as hurricane irma is getting ready to roar across the state. >> it's mayhem. lines for everything. everything was already gone and taken. all the gas and the water. there was nothing. and just pandemonium honestly. the category five store sweeping past the dominican republic and haiti. claiming 10 lives. jocelyn knows full well the destruction this magnitude is capable of. >> you have been through andrew you understand what can happen. i have two small children and i said we got to go. >> these new jersey natives go

to college in florida and they touched down this morning. >> they suggest every student evacuate south florida because of the storm. >> as thousands are in a mad rush to get out of the state volunteers like adrian are headed to the path of destruction. just another team that the red cross is mobilizing as it prepped crews in georgia all the way up to virginia and maintaining crews in texas for the aftermath of the devastate hurricane harvey. >> people are across the country and irma could potentially strike and affect the entire east coast that. is something we have not seen for a long time. >> the red cross currently has volunteers in six states including in canada as well. they are covering and helping with fires in canada and california. and helping with the aftermath is of hurricane harvey in houston and at this point they are not sure if additional resources will be needed once

hurricane irma passes through. channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. lets get the latest on the path irma is expected to take after raking the caribbean. meteorologist, david murphy, is tracking the storm over at the weather center. >> all right hurricane irma clearly a strong dangerous storm with a clearly defined eye. notice the high is well north of the dominican republic and haiti but the eye itself is headed to the turks and caicos. than is the next area feeling the full brunt of the storm. because of the storm's inaction with the mountains of hispaniola. the maximum dropped from 185 to 180 and now 175, but it's still a strong category five storm and the win gusts are certainly up there at 215 miles per hour. not all that below this time

yesterday. damage path of this storm. anywhere from 180 miles out from the eye you'll get some sort of damage. we are expecting that in haiti and the ref of hispaniola and the dominican republic. but catastrophic is within 50 to 70 miles of of the eye. turks and caicos is in line for that. south florida, some are calling it potentially catastrophic but that depends on how strong it is. the latest model shows it heading into florida as a strong major category four hurricane. that would be sometime in the wee hours of sunday morning. conditions would deteriorate during the day on saturday. but ground zero if the center track in miami would be wee hours of sunday morning until a couple of hours past dawn. you see how the most likely track is east of florida, east

of melbourne that wouldtain to make it a strong storm and then down to a three, and quickly over land it loses the fuel it needs to survive. the warm water and degenerate into a tropical storm, and tropical low after that. and the possible range of tracks is anywhere within the wide cone and once you up past mel born you are uncertain as the track. on the gps model we start saturday morning into saturday evening. look how the gusts get closer on this projected model ruin, 6 miles per hour in miami and it gets a lot worse. how about 127 miles per hour gusts in miami the potential for a hurricane comes in there. that would indeed give you a long period of time there are catastrophic damage would we possible. we'll have more on irma, and our forecast looking better. all ahead in the seven day.

is suspended for 30 days with the intent to dismiss. and up to the attorney general to decide if the officer faces criminal charges. bucks county murder suspect. cosmo dinardo is waiving the the preliminary hearing. he is held without bail and faced the judge this morning. he admitted to killing four men on his parent salisbury farm in july. nora muchanic will have more on today's hearings coming up in the next half hour. delaware county investigators cracked a cold case from ten years ago announcing an arrest this morning. the 34-year-old from new york was taken into district court. goody is charged with first degree murder in the stabbing death of gary jenkins at his home in 2007. his girlfriend lived with jefrn

jenkins at the time. he was arrested for assault in new york in 2014. one person has died after reported being hit by a bulldozer at this northeast philadelphia construction site. first responders rushed to the 5100 block just after 6:00 a.m. the site is located between i-95 and the delaware river, investigators have not said how the person came into the path of that equipment. police are looking for the thiefs that stole rental cars from a thrifty rental lot in south philadelphia. a man distracted the man at the gate and others snuck into the lot and drove away with the vehicles all were later recovered on willow street and one person was taken into custody but five others remain at large. a centennial celebration of

here at this construction site. this is the 700 block of campus drive the incident was called in at 11:45 just a short time ago. we don't know the extent of injuries but we are watching as they place the worker on to the backboard. a larger building on the second or third floor and a tricky rescue. and a beam came down on the construction worker and here in collegeville, montgomery county. we'll monitor this rescue effort and bring up the latest on 6abc.com and here during the newscast. meteorologist, david murphy, here now with a lot to talk about in the weather department. stormtracker 6 live double scan around here we have rain overnight and it's gone. taking a look outside we have sky 6 hd we have penn's landing across the river and the camden waterfront ain sun and clouds mix across the region. 67 in philadelphia and the dew point 55 and winds light at 11:00 and the ocean temperature 72 and breezy this afternoon.

temperatures in the 60s across the region and a couple of 70s beginning to pop up south of philadelphia and parts of south jersey, there is the rain from overnight and cloud cover is around today and we are look agent brighter conditions and not a bad day overall. partly sunny in the lehigh valley, and breezy and high of 72 and down the shore a high of 73 sun mixing with clouds and moderate risk of rip currents in the ocean. 74 and sun and clouds and pleasant, a pretty nice day overall. and 50 is the overnight low and philadelphia itself only gets down to 58 and partly cloudy and cool overnight. hurricane irma a category five storm, the winds have dropped to 180 miles per hour. and even a category four or three, it's still dangerous, that is where the caicos islands

are in and it's there as a category five in the afternoon and evening. spaghetti notes show a plot north to miami some move to the west and east. but up in here, the farther north we go the less agreement and certainty we have. and interest in florida and right in through georgia and the carolinas, they need to keep an eye on this because it could be a category four when it hits florida later on in the weekend. sun and clouds today and not bad. 73 tomorrow and sunny and nice and saturday bright and pleasant to start out the the weekend with a high of 71. we get milder on sunday and lots of sun and 74 degrees for a high on sunday and monday 76. we are back to 72 on tuesday and wednesday. and that is when rain from irma may arrive. >> we'll keep watching it. thank you. quick break and more "action news" when we come right back.
