>> sara bloomquist is live at philadelphia international airport but we begin with meteorologist, cecily tynan, who is tracking the path of the storm. >> reporter: yes, it looks like irma is more likely going to be hitting southern florida and going up the peninsula. a worst case scenario for florida. this is about the size of texas, already set records in terms of its strength and bearing down on the turks and caicos islands. it looks like that island chain will be decimated by the storm. we have hurricane warnings that extend through the bahamas and hurricane warnings from west palm beach to key west. that means hurricane conditions felt there within the next 48 hours. future tracker 6 shows that is definitely the case. key largo 114 miles per hour. and miami could be in the northeast quadrant of the storm that has the highest wind gust

and storm surge, 127 miles per hour wind gusts by sunday morning. so the latest track has shifted a little farther to the west. that means irma will likely be hitting southern florida by saturday afternoon and sunday afternoon as a category four hurricane, the latest track bring its up the center of the peninsula. that means the entire peninsula of florida will get hit by hurricane force winds and not making a second landfall but decreasing to a category one as it pushes north of jacksonville. the take away from irma's impact likely the worst damage since hurricane andrew in 1992, could be worse than that. storm surge making places uninhabitable for months. and running out of time to evacuate. more coming up in the full accuweather forecast. >> meanwhile hurricane irma has cut a path of destruction through the caribbean leaving as we mentioned at least ten people

dead and thousands homeless. tonight it's headed straight for florida and mandatory evacuation orders are in effect for the coastal communities but as those residents try to get out. they are running in major gas shortages in the miami area 35% of gas stations are without fuel and the stations that have fuel, lines are stretching for miles. florida's governor has ordered state police to escort fuel trucks to gas station as long evacuation routes. >> we have to get the fuel as fast as we can so people have the fuel to vevacuate. >> my car is on e for the past hour. >> irma has done catastrophic damage to the caribbean and in the tiny island of barbuda 90% of structures are destroyed there. >> and some areas in puerto rico could be without power for up to six months.

as folks get out of florida, airlines are trying to keep up with demands. but that could prove difficult as the weather worsens. sara bloomquist is live with more on that. >> monica all the major airlines are suspending operations to and from south florida by tomorrow evening. some as early as late afternoon tomorrow. they did add flights and bigger planes to the south florida airports today. but it doesn't seem to be enough. the clock is ticking and there is an increasing sense of desperation among the people trying to escape irma's path. the passenger as rived this afternoon from a flight from miami. a few departing as the airlines wind down flights to and from florida. they describe the scene at the airport as chaotic. >> a lot of concerned people wanting to get out of town, make their flights and get out of town and they didn't seem to have the personnel to man the flights.

it was a little freaky. >> these passengers were on a flight schedule to arrive in philadelphia yesterday but american seems to be having staffing problems as they work to end operations. the final flight departs miami just before 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. >> it was a nightmare with american. they had to put us up and then delayed us over and over again. i was suppose to be here yesterday. >> they were talking about sheltering us it got that close. >> wow. you must be relieved? >> we are happy to be home. >> they were visiting cuba but with limited internet access they didn't grasp the severity of the storm. >> she missed her first day of school and we got to the airport delayed. delayed. canceled. but it feels good to be moment i'll tell you that much. >> justin drove to daytona from

orlando with her kids and like other airline passengers this time feels different. >> i just look at what is happening in houston and other places, and i feel like these storms are just different, they are bigger and dangerous now more than it has ever been. >> passengers told us they left behind friends that now cannot get fuel for their cars, they are describing gas lines that are two miles long and can't get a seat on any flight. they are realizing they will have to stay. we'll hear from the university miami student from villanova that had to leave his friends behind. live at philadelphia international airport i'm sara bloomquist, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. as people try to get out of the storm's path volunteers with the american red cross are rushing straight into it. to try to help out. they fanned out across florida and the carolinas to get supplies and resources to the tens of thousands of evacuees.

add that to the volunteers already deployed in texas in the wake of harvey and the organization you can imagine is stressed very thin. >> we are stretching potentially over five or six states and we have the wild fires still in california. and we is even have a couple of folks still supporting the canadian red cross with the wild fires up there. it's definitely a stretch on our human and material resources but the red cross plans for this, this is what we do and we are ready if and when irma strikes. >> officials with the red cross say making sure that shelters are set up is the most critical task now but they believe that they are ready. >> we are also tracking the path of hurricane irma on the 6 abc app and we'll alert you to any updates as the storm progresses and get the latest from the team of meteorologist on possible impact here. the 6 abc app is a free download for your mobile device. "action news" reporter, trish hartman is live now where the family of jenna burley is preparing to say good-bye. >> reporter: that viewing is just getting underway for jenna's friends and family at williamsburg funeral home. it goes from 5:00 until 8:00 tonight. earlier today jenna's temple university community also gathered to remember her. >> dozens of temple university students came together on campus holding red flowers, mourning the death of 22-year-old jenna burley of harleysville. she was new to the community enrolling as a transfer student majoring in film and media arts. police say that burley was

killed last week. a 29-year-old is charged with her murder along with abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence and the instrument of a crime. she was seen leaving a bar near campus and they believe they just met before they left the bar. and burley's body was found in wayne county on a lakefront property owned by the suspect's grandmother, another viewing for jenna's friends and family will be held tomorrow morning at st. marie goretti and a private bural. >> folks that new jenna says she was an advocate for the homeless and instead of flowers donations for jenna's blessing bag. we posted the information at 6abc.com. trish hartman, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. well, a centennial celebration of the ben franklin

time for the accuweather forecast. thursday night. meteorologist, cecily tynan with the latest on irma. >> it remain a dangerous storm. a deadly storm. lets head over to the "action news" weather center. this is the latest satellite on irma. it remain a dangerous category five hurricane and the eye is affecting the turks and caicos island it's over salt kay, and the islands will get decimated by the storm system. if you have seen the damage from saint martin, it looks like it could be even worse for turks and caicos. the maximum winds 175 miles per

hour. and category five starts at 157. it remain a dangerous cat five. it's moving at a good complaint for a storm this size. west northwest 16 miles per hour. and maximum wind gusts 215 miles per hour. and we have three hurricanes in the atlantic basin that is typical when you look at when hurricane season does peak, september 10th that is sunday and that is likely when irma will be making landfall along the florida peninsula. this is the latest track on irma, it remains a dangerous category five hurricane through the bahamas and making that turn and hitting near miami, sunday actually in the morning on sunday. and that is bad timing because this is heading towards high tide and the latest track brings the center of the storm right up north through the center of the florida peninsula. typically the hurricane will favor water one side or the

other, if this verifies it means the east coast of the florida peninsula. it is hit the hardest, wind and rain and tremendous storm surge and turks and caicos, we are talking about 15 foot storm surge and south florida. 5 to 10 feet that is above the actual high tide than will cause problems, back at home, we have quiet cool weather, a nice day 73 in philadelphia and allentown 71 and wilmington 73. satellite 6 along with action radar showing a few building clouds this afternoon and some fair weather clouds building to the north and a cold front moves through tomorrow and that brings us a reinforcing shot of cool air and feeling like fall and temperatures dropping down into the 50s under a moonlit sky and tomorrow again cool only up into the low 70s and a few building clouds if the afternoon and maybe a sprinkle northern and west with the cold front behind the front and temperatures dip more on saturday.

now and this area will be decimated. moving 16 miles per hour fast for a storm of this size. it's about the size of texas and the latest track maintains category five status into the southern bahamas and interacting with cuba, it lessens a bits and making landfall by miami by sun morning as the tide increases and the latest track brings it right up to the center of the florida peninsula. east of center that is close to a worst case scenario for florida. it's rare for a storm to take this track. the latest on irma with that track to the west. staying over the florida peninsula. that means the hurricane storm force winds that extends 60 miles north of the center will affect the entire peninsula. that means hurricane storm force winds across the entire peninsula. and widespread damage and the

worst part of the storm is the northeast quadrant, that puts it over the east coast of florida as it moves in and i'll have more details coming up later on. back to you. >> thank you. well, we are getting a look at the utter devastation on the island of saint martin from the air. the dutch ministry flew over head to survey the damage and homes and buildings are scattered about and the airport suffered heavy damage and boats were strewn across the harbor and smaller islands are dealing with dangerous conditions tonight on saaba that lies south of sane martin much of the island's vegetation was destroyed season homes destroyed as well and roofs ripped right off and the main concern is a shortage of food. people are not expecting boats to deliver aid until at least late next week. >> "action news" was in philadelphia as the aaa flat bed

truck packed with pallets of water set out for houston, texas. that joins two others from the mid-atlantic fleet bringing supplies to residents impacted by hurricane harvey. and tow trucks will head there to clean up cars, aaa is monitoring the situation in florida and will deploy other trucks down there if the need arises. meantime an it is containing supplies for the victims of hurricane harvey is heading down to texas. it was packed with 20 tons of supplies, gathered by the fraternal order of police members and supporters and raise the $10,000 going toward relief efforts. it was blessed by father wetzel before departing. and we are tracking the path of irma on the 6 abc app. we'll alert you to updates as the storm progresses and get the

latest from our meteorologists on the possible impact here. in other news a construction worker was hurt in an accident on a job site in collegeville, montgomery county today. chopper 6 hd is over the scene of the 700 block of campus drive where a beam fell down on a worker around noon. the victim was rushed to the hospital and no information on the extent of the injuries or what caused the accident. one person was killed in a crash on pike creek on lyndon hill road. no clear what led up to the collision and a passenger in one of the cars died of their injuries and police have not said if anyone else was hurt. in washington today president trump touted his deal with the democrats that took congressional republicans by surprise and at the same time the president's eldest son, don jr. spend time on capitol hill. emily is live in washington
