sara bloomquist is live at philadelphia international airport where flights are pouring in from florida. but first lets go to cecily tynan with the latest on the storm and the possible intentions. >> jim i can't stress enough what a large and powerful storm this is. about the size of texas and the staying power is phenomenal. it's interacting with the mountains of the dominican republic where storms typically go to die but the eye is north and it barely weakened at all. it's still a strong category five and lashing out at the turks and caicos islands. getting swallowed up by the storm. it's moving at a fast clip 1 miles per hour. hurricane warnings extend through the bahamas. we have hurricane watches posted for south florida from west palm beach through miami and key west. that means hurricane conditions will be experienced there within

the next 48 hours. and future tracker 6 shows us key largo experiencing wind gusts 114 miles per hour and heading into sun morning, miami wind gusts 127 miles per hour and the latest track from the national hurricane center shows pretty close to a worst case scenario for florida. it brings the storm from the florida keys to miami sun morning as the tide is coming in. this is so unusual i can't remember a hurricane from this path north to the center of the peninsula spreading out the damage and hurricane force winds through the entire peninsula. and we are looking at enormous damage. this is the frantic scene at miami international airport. thousands of floridians scramble to escape before they halt all

plane traffic there. sara bloomquist is live at philadelphia international airport the destination for some of those florida travellers. what are you learning there? >> jimming all the major airlines are suspending operations to and from all south florida airports by tomorrow evening. some as early as tomorrow afternoon and that means the clock is ticking, fewer and fewer flights are left and we heard problems about going on with those flights already on the board. we heard some real relief from passengers arriving here this afternoon. they are grateful they got out but deeply concerned about people and property they left behind. >> it was scary because we almost didn't get out. >> passenger as rising on the american flight from miami to philadelphia. thought they may be forced to ride out the storm in south florida. they were scheduled to arrive here yesterday but kept getting delayed. and the airline's explanation they couldn't find a flight

atte atte atten attenda attendant. >> they were talking with sheltering us. >> we didn't get to the hotel until 1:00 in the morning and had to be out at 7:00. just hard you know. >> passengers describe miami airport as chaotic. airlines added extra flights and larger aircrafts but seats are selling out. >> all the prices like $1500 or sellout while we were trying to buy a flight and people were freaking out about it. >> they were capping their flights at $99 but it doesn't matter, you can't get one any way. >> jimmy attends the university of miami and has friends that can't fuel a car or find a seat on a flight. i have friends that may not get out. i have friends that are hunkering down their houses. >> these passengers are relieved

breening deep sighs of relief but the worries are not over because they have no ideas when their loved ones will get back to our area. >> hurricane irma has been especially brutal to the island of saint martin a lovely tourist destination with a mix of dutch and french cultures. the hour is out and the island destroyed and leaving vacationers from these parts marooned at their resorts, malory from pottstown and her boyfriend and his grandparents are trapped in their resort. but better than others in the caribbean. >> she was able to call out a few times, just brief information like are you okay? what are they doing where are you at? >> getting the call was reassuring to karen and now word of looting in saint martin triggering calls to the u.s. government to see when the

indicated decision. in order to fire at a fleeing suspect there must be an imminent threat of death of injury or another person. >> commissioner richard ross determined that was not the case when officer richard parnell when he fired the fatal shot. he stopped jones on his dirt back. >> he used his left hand to grab jones and felt a gun in the waist band. he pulled his gun and told the male not to move but the male kept reaching under his hoody and broke free from the officer and pulled his gun from the waist band. >> parnell's gun initially jammed. calling the shot within policy. but once jones ran the opportunity to fire changed. parnell had time to clear the jam and take cover but didn't instead firing twice hitting jones in the back.

it's clear from the video that officer parnell believed he was still armed but the problem is that nothing on the video suggests that was the case, he was running away he never turns back to officer parnell in a threatening way. >> black lives matter call the decision a good start but want parnell charged with murder. the attorney general's office is handling the investigation. >> what are the past months like for you? >> it's a nightmare i wake up every morning missing my child, i can't get him back. >> this is the second shooting by officer parnell in 2010 he paralyzed another suspect but that was not part of his decision to dismiss. attempts to reach parnell was unsuccessful and the fop had

grim details of the murder of four bucks county men in court today. cosmo dinardo waived his hearing but his cousin sean kratz was there. he described the scene as a massacre and that he and dinardo went for cheesesteaks after the murders. the four your found dead on dinardo's family farm in salisbury township in july. a viewing is held tonight for jenna burley. family and friends are gathering at the koppel funeral home tonight. earlier today dozens of temple students gathered on campus holding red flours in burley's honor. her suspected killer is charged with murder and abuse of a corpse and other crimes. police are looking for the

thiefs that stole three rental cars from a thrifty rental lot in northeast philadelphia. someone distracted a security guard when others stuck into the lot and drove away in the vehicles. the cars were recovered on willow street and one person was taken into custody but five others remain at large. whole tech international cut the ribbon on the third u.s. manufacturing plant. new jersey governor, chris christie and camden mayor, dana redd were there for the opening of the christa peace in camden. the manufacturing company make a range of parts including military and aerospace and pharmaceuticals. they are recruiting locally to fill manufacturing positions at the new plants.

it's always the big suspense what is the track going to be? what is the path going to be. at this point the worst possible case for florida. >> if it continues this will be worse than hurricane andrew. i want to show you the worst infrared satellite on irma. it's a monster storm the size of texas and bearing down on the turks and caicoss islands which will be decimated. maximum sustained wind remain at 175 miles per hour even though it's interacting with the

dominican republic, it has staying power the pressure is low 922 millibars moving north-northwest at 1 miles per hour. maximum sustained winds 215 miles per hour. and we have two other hurricanes in the atlantic. the timing is amazing when you look at this. the peak is september 10th that is sunday likely when irma makes landfall over florida. it remains a category five, moving through the southern bahamas almost threading the needle north of cuba and the latest track brings it over the northern keys right into miami by sunday morning. as the tide is coming in. very unusual. this is unprecedented. a track that takes it north through the peninsula of florida as a cat one and east of atlanta as a tropical storm and this

would be a worst case scenario. if it verifies, the shift a little bit to the west that means staying over the florida peninsula. hurricane storm force winds extended 120 miles per hour across that is the width of the peninsula. that means hurricane force winds and widespread damage especially the highly populated east coast of florida. taking it on the chin. that is the worst part of the storm. locally we have quiet weather here, can't complain about the weather, philadelphia 72 and allentown 69 and cape may 71 and wilmington 71. satellite and radar showing a few clouds bubbling up and dissipating and tonight is moonlit and cool for september standards, 50 degrees for the suburbs and 56 for center city. tomorrow if you like today you'll like tomorrow. partly sunny skies and could get a sprinkle north of philadelphia in the afternoon.
