reason why. this is what hurricane irma has already done to the caribbean. there is death, and as you can see, almost total destruction. this is truly a brutal storm, and it's headed for the sunshine state. >> thursday night, the big story on "action news" tonight is hurricane irma. first the story in the caribbean. irma is currently pummeling the turks and caicos island known to be the most beautiful tourist destinations. the dominican republic is savaged by the storm. a minimummion people without power in puerto rico. st. martin is the place of terrible damage. the death toll stands at 11:00. ground zero for irma will be the state of florida. here's governor rick scott. look at the storm.

it's wider than our entire state and could cost major impact coast to coast. >> forecasters say it could slam into the miami metropolitan area home to 6,000,000 people and the condos could sway 12-inches in hurricane force winds. the evacuation is on by road and by plane. the cruel reality is, hundreds of flights are being canceled. gas stations are being shut down. the governor of georgia ordered 540,000 coastal re residents to move inland. said one local official, if a freight train is coming at you, get off the tracks. >> until now hurricane andrew was the hardest to hit florida,

but irma has staying power. it's still a category five hurricane. maximum sustained winds, 165 miles per hour and irma, over the past 24 hours, has actually expanded. it's now 650-miles across. put that into perspective, irma is big as the state of texas. it's moving northwest quickly about 16 miles per hour. this is the latest track we got from the national hurricane center. this maintains a cat 5 toward the bahamas, reducing to a cat 4 a major dangerous hurricane, north of cuba by saturday evening and it jogged slightly west bringing it over key west, everglades of florida by sunday morning.

category 3 as it moves north through the center of the florida peninsula. that is an unprecedented track. typically hurricanes choose one side or the other. they are attracted by water. if it moves through the middle, it brings hurricane winds across the peninsula. these are potential impacts, a storm surge five to ten feet, rainfall eight to 12-inches. some places uninhabitable for weeks if not months. i have more details in the forecast. jim? >> cecily, dann cuellar is live at philadelphia international airport. it's like a mass migration florida to points north and philadelphia is one of the points north. >> that's right, jim. thousands have traveled to

philadelphia. many that made it here feel lucky to have gotten out when they did. >> it was chaotic. >> it was a disaster. >> their hectic. it's a nightmare. >> we got out just in time. >> one after another people describe florida to get out. lots of accidents. our plane was delayed over two hours. >> it took forever to get gas. >> propene, people waiting for the tankers to fill up the fuel, gas stations. it was crazy. >> the effort was crazy. it was booked, completely filled with people trying to get out. we were on the tarmac an hour before we could take off because of the delays. they want there were no more planes departing the airport so everyone got into a panic. >> we had to wait and wait some

melon street. >> in the head, in the face, there was a pool of blood. >> the victim parked the family suv on their naked block when two men approached with a gun. >> we believe it was a robbery but for some unknown reason, the perpetrator fired two shots. >> at point-blank range, the 38 hit in the head. he was rushed by police to hahnemann hospital where he later died. if it's not clear if they knew the victim personally, but the 38-year-old was the intended target of the robbery. residents left in utter shock of the violence in front of their door. >> we have been here two months and it's completely quiet. >> the once quiet street now the scene of a homicide.

suspects were seen going north on 15th. they are described as late teens early 20s, wearing dark colored hooded sweatshirts. police are on scene looking for surveillance tooj that may have captured this footage. anyone with information is asked to contact detectives. jim? >> thank you, christie. homicide detect is are working another case tonight. the murder just after 6:30. police have not identified the victim or a motivate. >> the philadelphia police commissioner plans to hire the officer that fatally shot a fleeing suspect in the back. while the pennsylvania attorney general considers if it amounts to a crime. the commissioner refused toe weigtoweigh in with that opiniot said officer parnell clearly

violated procedure several times ending with the death of david jones. first parnell pulled over jones while already transporting someone in his patrol car. he tried to shoot the armed jones but his gun jammed. the officer then shot jones twice as jones ran away. >> just because you had an opportunity and the right to fire at one pin point during an encounter does not mean you have the same right throughout the encounter. there is an on occasion to reassess the situation. black lives matter called the decision a good start. the police union had no comment. >> members of the temple university community came together to grieve for 22-year-old jenna burleigh

let's head to the "action news" weather center to show you the storm. it's relentless. the eye wall i is over, a categy five hurricane. maximum sustained winds 165 miles per hour. pressure has risen slightly interacting with land. it's moving west northwest 16 miles per hour maximum sustained winds, 200 miles per hour. we have three hurricane in the atlantic basin right now. this is really "the peak" of tropical storm season peaked september 10th. talk about timing, that is the day irma will likely make landfall over southern florida. let's talk about the track, got the track from the national hurricane center at 11:00.
