of shelters and the state's highways are clogged with a mass evacuation. molly hunter is live in new smyrna beach. >> reporter: it's relatively quiet on the east coast but the waves are getting progressively bigger as we wait for irma. hurricane irma churned through the northern caribbean overnight devastating small islands. it's the strongest recorded storm to hit the atlantic. >> the worst time of my life. i would not want to see this again. >> irma stayed largely offshore in port week but saint martin and turks and caicos and the tiny island of barbuda taking direct hits. >> the entire country has been decimated. >> irma with wins of 150 miles per hour taking aim for the bahamas and cuba and tomorrow south florida. and here on the coast of florida, people are boarding up

their houses and many houses are actually empty and people are heeding the call to get out of town. people are ordered to evacuate and stocking up on water and food. >> i am trying to get as north as possible. >> shelves wiped clean of bottled water. >> the storm is wider than our entire state and expected to cause major and life-threatening impacts from coast-to-coast. >> the florida governor warning everyone that can to get out now. remembering the last monster storm here 25 years ago. hurricane andrew is one of the worst storms in the history of florida. irma is more devastating on its current path. >> the governor emphasized they will not come rescue you in the middle of a storm. rescue crews stop when winds hit 40 miles per hour. and we expect winds three times that. back to you. >> thank you. lets get the latest now on

the hurricane's dangerous path. meteorologist, melissa magee, is tracking irma from the weather center. >> this is an extremely powerful storm. and we see fluctuation in the strength of the storm in the next several days and nonetheless one that we are watching as we head into the weekend. hurricane irma and the well defined eye in the center of circulation. we'll give you the latest on the stats here. irma is a category four storm and winds sustained at 150 miles per hour. moving north-northwest at 14 miles per hour and maximum sustained gusts of 185 miles per hour. and this is not the oath system in the tropics we are tracking now. it goes in line with the tropical activity during the month of september and by september 10th we see a peak in activity. we not only have irma but we have katia and we have jose we are tracking closely. but sticking with irma right now we have hurricane warnings up for the bahamas, and also as far north as west palm beach and

down into key largo for the keys of florida and to the west in areas in naples. as we look at the current track. it's 405 miles to the southeast of miami, florida. as a category four hurricane moving north of cuba and central bahamas later today and expected to make landfall early saturday or sunday morning i should say across the florida keys and also across florida. something we are tracking as the storm is taking a westerly jog. that whole cone we'll be tracking as we head into the weekend as far as the cone uncertainty. as far as what to expect. hurricane force winds across florida peninsula. storm surge 5 to 10 feet and rainfall 8 to 12 inches and isolated spots could find 20 inches of rain and some places will be uninhabitable. >> all right wheel check in later thank you. many people fleeing the hurricane's path are heading

north, some of them arriving on flights in philadelphia. gray hall is live at the philadelphia international airport where he spoke to florida residents after they just stepped off the plane and gray you have that part of the story. >> reporter: indeed i do. you have seen the storm it's huge and massive and scary and dangerous. the folks we talked to are evacuated it's not worth the risk they have to get out. as the ferocious hurricane irma heads to south florida many are heeding the word of caution and evacuating. for these families it was a no brainer. they had to leave. >> we were not so much concerned until about tuesday and then we kind of breathed a little bit because it shifts east. and then as of yesterday it got real. it got much more real. it's coming straight through the middle. >> it's scary, we don't know it

could turn any minute. safer to get my family out, two little kids, i'm sad because my husband is still there. >> thousands are expected to leave florida to escape the fast approaching storm. many airports if florida are canceling flights and others will suspend operations and close saturday and sunday. >> we covered everything up. we have the generator for the whole house. we are set. >> we were trying to fly home on sunday night but probably not. that won't work. and i know that it's hitting us mostly sunday night into monday morning. so probably we'll extend the stay. for those that made it out their fears are not over, concerned about those that did not evacuate and those that got out. they are watching to see what irma will do. watching how everyone is trying to get out. like i can selled yesterday the people are crying at the airport. and older people at the

scene in logan with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: rick, this is a sexual assault investigation, the victim is an 18-year-old la salle student released from the hospital this morning. police say she was walking by herself near the park late last night and on the phone with her boyfriend and she sensed something was wrong. this morning investigators back near the basketball court in logan. searching for evidence after a college student was attacked late last night by two men. >> these are two violence predators we have to get off the street before they do something else. you don't do something this horrific and then stop there. officers were called at 11:45 to ogontz in olney. the victim was walking near the park by la salle's campus and noticed two men were following her. she was on the phone talking to her boyfriend and felt uncomfortable and asked her to

call police. and the males grabbed her. >> the suspects threw bleach on her during the attack. >> there is alligation that some sort of bleach substance was flown on her face and they threw her who the ground and she was physically assaulted and probably sexually assaulted. la salle officials were notetived. she was interviewed at the special victim's unit and the advocate remained with her to provide her resources. officials are reiterating that there are services to help students get home safely. >> we believe you can be anywhere near campus and you are in your escort zone all they have to do is contact the public safety, and we have a shuttle that goes around campus for most of the day and night. >> reporter: and so far police have not released detailed tripses of the suspects, they

are looking for surveillance cameras in the area to see if there is footage to help in the investigation. live in logan, katherine scott, channel 6 "action news." a temple university student murdered near campus is being laid to rest today. friends and family are gathering in hatfield to remember her. police say that the harleysville native was killed after leaving a popular bar. police have identified the man killed in front of of his 2-year-old daughter last night in spring garden. 38-year-old gerard grandall parked his car and two men approached him and took his wallet and shot him in the face. the victim's young daughter was with him at the time but was not hurt. the suspects are believed to be in their late teens or early 20s. bob brooks will have more coming up in our next half hour.

at least 32 people were killed this morning in one. the most powerful earthquakes to strike mexico. it hit with a magnitude of 8.1 and hundreds of buildings collapses and efforts are underway to find anyone trapped in the rubble. at least 20 large aftershocks were felt and a major aftershock could still happen. the magnitude is more powerful that one that killed thousands of people back in 1985. a man shot by police at the

miami airport last night was armed with a gun. the airport was packed at the time with people trying to leave florida ahead of hurricane irma and the suspect was trying to get access to the terminal from the runway. an officer responded and the men fled into a room and tried to get back into the terminal from a ceiling and the police confronted and shot the suspect. he was taken to the hospital in stable condition. they believe that the man acted alone. a $15 billion disaster aid package is heading to president trump's desk. it passed the senate yesterday and meant to fill depleted emergency accounts as texas rebuilds from hurricane harvey. and tied to a temporary increase in the government's borrowing authority and keeps the government funded until december. eliminating a shut down next month. and fs employees were

from the national hurricane center, the winds at 100 miles per hour. this is something we are tracking as it gets closer to mexico. and as we have hurricane irma a category four 150 miles per hour. and also hurricane jose, this is upgraded to a category four storm with the latest advisory with winds at 150 miles per hour. right now it looks like jose will curve to the north heading toward bermuda into early next week, within that cone that is something we are tracking. as we get closer we are watching hurricane irma into the weekend. a category four storm. about 405 miles southeast of miami, florida. moving north-northwest at 14 miles per hour. expected to move to the north of the central bahamas overnight and we have seen a shift with the track it's moving farther to the west but still this entire cone that we have to watch as we head into the weekend, all eyes
