thousands of people homeless. irma smashed homes, businesses be roads, and schools. now many residents and tourists are dealing with power outages and water and telephone service. in south florida, time is running out. irma is expected to hit the flew keys tomorrow morning. one of the largest evacuations in u.s. history is underway. 5.6 million people more than a quarter of the state's population ordered to leave. as a result there is bumper to bumper traffic on major highways wedding north and the drivers are taking a risk because nearly a third of gas stations have run out of fuel. this is a live look at hollywood beach florida, you can feel the tensions as residents await what some fear could be the big one to cause major damage to the southeast coast. there's the live picture, you see the winds picking up there. hollywood beach, florida, as the state of florida perhaps for the

impact of hurricane irma expected to make landfall sometime tomorrow morning. abc's stephanie ram mows live with the latest on the system. >> reporter: so many iconic miami spots are ghost towns, no traffic or people, so many homes boarded up as the deadly storm rages toward the coast. hurricane irma is inching closer and closer to south florida with winds with 106 miles per hour. the storm shifting further west. the eye of the storm with its sights on the florida keys and tampa. the national weather service tweeting this is as real as it gets. nowhere in the florida keys is safe. >> we are running out of time. the storm is almost here. if you're in an evacuation zone you need to go now. more than 5.6 million people have been asked to evacuate. many in low lying coastal areas. >> cars for miles.

>> reporter: as time runs out people are trying to escape the storm. traffic so bad on the three routes out of the of south florida, some abandoned their cars. those trying to get out by air finding themselves stuck. those who tried to get in hoping to get a last minute ticket stranded and bussed to shelters. >> we spent hours trying to find a flight. we have not slept. >> reporter: some are counting on their storm-resistant structures and staying put. >> we have electricity and we have hurricane proof house, it's a brand new built building with cement. >> reporter: here in miami we're starting to feel the outer rain bands of irma which is expected to reach south florida by tomorrow morning. reporting in miami, stephanie

ramos back to you. >> our team coverage of hurricane irma continues with meteorologist chris sowers who, of course, has been tracking the catastrophic storm. do we have a better direction in which irma is heading. >> reporter: we have a strong storm that could make two landfall it is in southern florida in the next 24 to 48 hours. first the keys and naples fort meyers beach area. it weakened it's down to a category four. maximum winds 130 miles per hour. it's interacting with the cuban coast. mountain terrain at 5 to ten thousand feet tripping the storm of some of it's energy. it's moving west it's encountering land it could weaken further before it makes the turn to the north over the florida keys and into the southwestern tip of florida. let's flip it over to storm tracker 6 live. here's a look at the outer edges

"action news" anchor brian taff is in florida and saw the problems trying to escape a hurricane firsthand. >> reporter: there's a sense of unease in fort lauderdale, florida, that's the sentiment shared by many back home who have relatives in south florida. some of the concern is being mitigated by the fact that the storm has a changing westward course that would take miami,

not self driven. mandatory evacuations underway in the southern most cities. a florida highway patrol officer told us so far so good. >> they have been in good spirits. we've had a few here and there, but for the most part everybody has been cooperative, we're trying to keep an orderly fashion to keep the traffic from backing out on the main line weep keeping that open. it's been successful, but there's been times when it has come close. >> reporter: amid the flow of the people out, a delaware county family was heading in. determined to take their vacation at disney. >> it's our first time at disney, we're hoping and praying for the best. >> i hope it's safe, and turns out all right and no damage where we are at. >> reporter: sad news for the family, disney world will shut down today at noon and it will be closed tomorrow and monday, possibly longer.

the officer who responded to the scene. an officer was shot in the leg. the officer was taken to the hospital to be treated. the unidentified suspect was arrested without incident. this morning, police want to talk to people who might have witnessed a shooting in philadelphia's spring garden section thursday night. 38-year-olderald grandsall two men approached him and robbed him. they wanted to take his car, when he tried to stop them, he was shot twice in the face. no arrests have been made. troy gentry a member of montgomery gentry has died following a helicopter crash in medford, new jersey at 1:00 p.m. shortly after signaling distress. we learned 50-year-old gentry was pulled from the wreckage,

>> rescue efforts continue in mexico following an 8.1 magnitude earthquake that killed 61 people thursday. strong wind and rain is making it difficult for crews there. katia hit mexico as a hurricane one -- category one hurricane. a caribbean helicopter tour company took to the sky to assess the damage, help with evacuations and check on residents. you can see the destruction left behind there. they found a landscape littered with debris from the thousands of homes an businesses ripped a

part. 4 of the 22 deaths across the caribbean were in the british virgin islands. irma is grabbing the headlines. she is not the only storm in the atlantic. this is what hurricane jose looks like from the international space station 250 miles above the ocean. nasa says jose is a category 3 when they shot these images. it is now a category 4, but will not threaten the u.s. mainland. chris sowers tracking the forecast watching irma right now, i guess tomorrow morning it is expected to make landfall. >> reporter: we're seeing the outer edges work across southern florida now, the bulk of it comes in first thing tomorrow morning and goes up the western side of the peninsula the rest of the day. irma, a category 4 storm has maximum stained winds of 130 miles per hour it has weakened over the past 12 hours

because of the interaction with the cuban coast. the terrain the hills, the mountains are 5 to 10,000 feet. we would like the storm to hug the coast a little bit longer before it makes the right hand turn and weaks more. the pressure is 937 mill -- millibars, moving to the west, gusts 170 to 190 miles per hour range. storm tracker 6 live showing the outer edges, what we've noticed over the last few hours, we're seeing the eye, and the eye wall interact with the land, we're seeing drier air work in on the north side that's beginning to weaken the storm a little bit. eventually as the storm makes the rnld -- right hand turn it will move into the warm waters of the florida straits where we have current temperatures in the

low 90s. that's pouring gasoline on the fire. it will use that and strengthen again. how much is the big question, at this point. you can see the florida keys and right in through here, this is the everglades national park southern florida seeing the heavier rain. latest moving to the west at 12, moving 125 miles per hour south of miami florida. i had should move over key whoas and sugarloaf key as a category four. sunday afternoon, fort meyers beach it will gradually start to weaken as it stays over the peninsula of florida as a category three monday morning. eventually it goes into places like georgia and tennessee. the spaghetti plots are coming together. we have a couple of lines that are well off the coast, this

would be a great sign because it would take naples and fort meyers beach out of the of worst part of the hurricane. the wynfield is massive. we have tropical storm force winds that extend 2 miles from the center of circulation. hurricane force winds 75 miles per hour. in places like fort meyers and naples and everglades national park, the keys getting battered at that point. miami 50 to 08 miles per hour. the storm surge will be tremendous for southwestern florida. 9 to 1 feet -- 12 feet for naples and 6 to 9 feet for the florida keys. the farther north you go into tampa, certify -- sarasota, you could see storm surge ever

the production snafus were related to the organic light and diode screen and fingerprint scanner. rick williams meets animals displaced by the massive storm hurricane harvey, being held by providence animal shelter in delaware county. >> these pitbulls were in water for three to four days. >> reporter: these images show the devastation left my harvey. providence animal shelter in delaware county got the call for help to transport and take in 37 dogs and cats straight out of the impact zone. >> all these pets that we took were in shelters prior to hurricane. either their shelter became a place they could not stay because it was not habitable. or the shelter was needed to house displaced pets.

for miles. at the pumps gas stations are running out of gas. atms are running dry. for those in miami dade county 43 shelters are open. chris sowers has more on the path of hurricane irma. it will make landfall tomorrow morning. >> reporter: it will not have the power when it moved over the leeward islands and the turks and caicos. when you look at the gulf of mexico and the carribean and atlantic waters, it was the second strongest storm of all times 185 miles per hour. the only storm stronger than that since the satellite era was hurricane alan. barbuda, 90, 95% of all the homes were destroyed and acrossd over saint martins. it is estimated that the damage

was 100 millions dollars to the two islands. it ran west over the turks t. entire airport all the runways under water. you can see all the trees are stripped because of the powerful winds. now the storm is approaching the coast of southern florida. it is weakened a little bit with winds 130 miles per hour. we're expecting it to make two landfall one around sugarloaf key and once west of naples getting into the fort meyers area. the storm surge will be ten foot plus, in west palm beach miami they could see a storm surge of 5 feet above the normal high tide. storm travels through florida, sunday through sunday night. the wynfield is massive like this, as the storm is sitting here, you're picking up the wind and seeing a 3 to 6-foot storm

surge. the wrap around, the winds shift out of the west, they are seeing 3 to 6 feet in the tampa area. eventually it heads into georgia as we head into monday afternoon. more specifically what to expect, the florida keys over the next 12 to 24 hours, actually this is the naples area. winds 95 to 125 miles per hour. rainfall total 6 to 12 inches. storm surge a wall of water heading inland of at least 9 to 12 feet. >> thank you for the update. 9:33 a.m. some of florida's evacuees have flown here into philadelphia. the final flight from orlando arrived at 9:30 p.m. last night. getting out of the storm's path is not as easy as getting on to a plane. dann cuellar spoke to the evacuees about the problems they faced. >> it was chaotic. >> everybody was trying to get out. people were starting to feel the

police arrested a man accused of trying to take two infants from a newark day care. 47-year-old calvin davis forced his way into the happy kids academy on old baltimore pike. here's the man police arrested. they say he got into a confrontation with two employees. he picked up two babies and attempted to walk out the door with them. the employees stopped the man from taking the children. the owner of the day care spoke exclusively to 6abc where we are protecting her identity she said herb employees are heros. >> they stood in front of him, they wouldn't let him take anybody out of here. i called them the heros of the day or the heros of the life. >> police arrested davis a short time later they confirmed to "action news" that he was arrested earlier this week for entering albert jones elementary
