♪ action news delaware valley's leading news program hurricane irma has made landfall in florida. as a category 4 storm. so far, throw people in florida have died and storm related incidents. hurricane irma was already being blamed for killing at least 20

people as barrelled through the caribbean and puerto rico. we're waiting for an update from the governor, rick scott and we will bring you as it begins. we know more than 6 million people were evacuated from florida. it includes roughly 1/3rd of the state's population. not everyone was able to or chose to get out. take a look how hurricane irma looks on radar, in some area, the rain and winds so strong, emergency crews are no longer able to respond to sfts calls. we're going to take you live. this is a live picture in west palm beach. this is actually inside of a news conference we're waiting on the governor to give us a briefing on the storm so far and as he steps to the podium we'll bring it live. in fort lauderdale, a tornado warning was issued. take a look at this video. appears to show a tornado forming, residents have been urged to stay inside and to

hunker down. a man riding out the storm in key largo captured this piece of video as the strong winds ripped off a piece of the roof. difficulty to see because of the heavy rain but we can tell you hurricane irma sustained winds at 130 miles an hour at the time it hit the southern tip of florida and you can see the trees practically horizontal from the force of the winds there. >> this is a monstrous storm. we have live team coverage for you. action news anchor brian taff is on scene with the latest >> bob brooks spoke to local companies heading south. we begin with chris sowers tracking this all morning long, you have a look at the path and how much rain floridians are dealing with >> the update that came in was 11:00 a.m. remains a powerful category 4 storm with winds of 130, those are sustained winds, we're

seeing gusts to 160. they're expecting property losses to be extensive, the damages to crop and property. irma made landfall in the lower keys earlier this morning. and now, the eye is starting to parallel the coast. we've been expecting this all morning long, what we've done to make this easier for the viewers. is colorado the cloud tops. the worst part is indicated boy the red. almost the entire lower part of florida at this point. so there's the eye. here is the eye wall. right here and it's just now starting to kind of hug the coast. so as the eye continues to pull to the northwest, hugging the coast, the worst part of the storm currently here, will also pull to the northwest and hug the coast. conditions in marco island, naples, fort myers, fort myers beach extending north to tampa, st. pete, the western shores of the state of florida conditions will begin to go downhill

rapidly here over the next six to ten hours. here's a look at satellite 6 along with action radar, you can see the feeder bands wrapping around the center of circulation. it includes homestead, miami, west palm beach and fort lauderdale. all included in the watches now, they've extended it north and west into the tampa area as well. peak wind gusts, now, big pine key, we've had 120 miles an hour winds, that's the peak wind gusts so far, smith shoal about 94 per hour, marathon, 88 and fort lauderdale about 82 miles per hour. so what we'll do is take a quick look at future tracker 6, stop it at 3:00 this afternoon, marco island you'll see gusts around 125 miles an hour, and keys reporting winds gutting over 100 miles per hour and the evening hour, 7:00 fort myers about 98, mark still about 116, 11:00 same

thing, gusts anywhere from 50 to 99 in tampa and by 7:30, we're still reporting hurricane force winds in the northern half of florida but calmed down a little bit to tropical storm force winds, 30 to 50 miles per hour in southern florida and as we get non, all of this lifts north and away from some areas that will be hardest hit. i'll be back in a few minutes, we'll focus more on the storm surge, amount of rain and when this clears and be back along with the accu-weather seven-day forecast coming up in about ten minutes. >> that you know. hurricane irma made landfall in the the florida keys, the coast to coast coast feeling the is storm's wrath >> as irma continues north, conditions in those city, we'll go from bad to worse. >> live now at west palm beach garden in florida, you can see the wind just whipping the trees there, of course, it is the storm surge that people are worried about, as much as 15

the roof of that building pealed away, metal roof pealed away and went flying somewhere else. precisely why you do not want to be outside in a storm like this, even though the winds are not even a fraction of what they're expected to be. let's take a piece of video that we shot a little bit earlier today, from outside the hotel. the front side of the hotel, where a tree came down, early this morning, this when winds were 30, 35 miles an hour, so one can safely assume it will get much worse, still yet to come. this should you it looking a irma unleashed on the florida keys delivering near 90 miles an hour winds, those small islands sit at sea level and lost power almost right way overnight. that contributed to a staggering 1 million floridians without electricity and that number will dramatically rise. but the loss of power is just one early element of this monstrous storm, there's already a loss of life today. officials say there have been

three storm related deaths so far, the driver of this truck in marathon, key among them. this is a huge storm, not just in power, but in physical presence. video now from miami. this morning, the other side of the state from where we are, those streets are flooding, they dealt with the whipping winds associated with the northeast quadrant of irma earlier. they are thankful that at least as far as the wind is concerned, the worse is behind them. but they too will deal with storm surge in the hours and days to come. one more piece of video r state wide, a martin county sheriff's boat rescuing someone, stuck on their sailboat, why anyone would have been on that boat to begin with a beyond me. let's come out live and give you the scene where we stand off our small balcony in the hotel in naples florida and tell you that cattier county is taking precautions, it's not the case here, they will not respond to

911 calls, there's a shelter in place right now. police are off the streets for their own safety. this will get a whole lot worse here the next couple of hours, winds while they're whipping right now are expected to approach about 125 miles an hour in terms of gusts, and the sustained winds is the issue, possibly near 100 miles an hour for a period that could be seven, eight, nine hours, taking us into the late hours tonight. inside this hotel, we begun to lose power, every in our and again the lights flicker, we expect at some point in the next hour or two, we'll be gone if good. the other major element is the surge. officials now estimate that here in the naples area, we're dealing with an at least nine-foot storm surge possibly as high as 15 feet. the general manager of this hotel assured us that we should be ok, according to her, we're at 16 feet above sea level and

continue today and tonight. this is a life-threatening situation. in southwest florida, the storm surge comes after the strongest winds. do not think the storm is over when the winds slows down. local officials will let you know when it is safe to go out. the storm surge will rush in and could kill you. we have thousands of national guard members official why would wildlife officers on stand by as soon as it is safe. they cannot help you until the storm has passed. you need to stay in the safe place. with storms latest track, families into the pan handle need to be on high alert for all severe weather including tropical storm and hurricane force winds, here in tallahassee, it is likely we'll experience hurricane force winds and families must prepare. we're doing all we can to be prepared to respond to this storm. today, i requested a major

. the eye has been wobbly but now looks like instead of paralleling looks like it wants to come inland in south florida where the everglades are. let's go over to the infrasatellite and here are the last few images, you can see how the eye a little bit. it seems like it wants to come

on shore, which would be outstanding, because once the hurricanes use the resources warm ocean water, they begin to weaken, this is all just everglades and marsh land, that would be much better news as opposed to if the storm wants to parallel coast with the eye staying offshore and continue to maintain strength. we'll see, hopefully it will come in land. moving to the north at nine miles per hour, and the gusts right now are currently 160 miles per hour, again this is a very powerful category 4 storm. this is key largo, this is marathon, and there's key west. that last reports, winds in key largo were out of the southeast at 75 miles per hour gusting to 92. now, as we look at the forward track, most of the tropical forecast models agree that this

should hug the coast. graphic a give 20 miles or so either side. it looks like it will be close to the shore line and will eventually go over fort myers and tampa and make its way up to the pan handle and southern georgia and the tennessee valley. take a look at future tracker. the heavy rains indicated by the red and purple. by 9:30, we think the center will be right over fort myers or maybe just to the north went the heavy feeder bans to tampa, getting founded this evening, as we progress tonight, we get to northern florida, where some of the greater effects will be, gainsville, tallahassee, heavy rains and gusty winds in excess of 70 miles per hour easy in this part of florida and the storm begins to weaken, once it losses the fuel source, the state of emergency will start to wind down, still, we could see gusts as high as 60 miles per hour, even in the atlanta metro area by the time we get to tuesday morning.

rainfall totals now here's the saving grace, harvey installed over southeastern texas, result was 30 to 50 inches of rain, this storm is zipping along. we're expecting rainfall to range anywhere from six 12 inches but isolated maybe 15 inch it's but we're not expecting the widespread catastrophic flooding like southeastern texas and it's because the storm is moving along at a pretty good clip. this is the biggest clip, the storm surge anywhere from nine to 12 feet from marco island through naples, and they cleared the immediate tampa area, that area water comes in and there's no scrapping. that's an area could be hard hit. we'll take a look at the florida keys. 1:00, 2:00 this afternoon, gusts still 100, 125 miles an hour, rainfall totals ten, 15 inches

crews say more than 1 million customers lost power as irma hits the states, power companies from the delaware valley are prepared to help >> bob brooks local power crews were headed that florida and they will hope all the need they can get >> nydia and gray, absolutely. this help that will be much needed as irma continues to make landfall, we know things are getting worse down there. at the beginning of the morning, first it was 400,000, 500, now more than a million customers in

florida do not have power as things continue to deteriorate. loaded up, water, gatorade and food. now 200 peco employees and contractors just departed from the station in eddy stone, destination, the damage and destruction sure to be left by hurricane irma. they left the property at 10:30. these crews are preparing for the worst. maybe the largest storm restoration project. they've ever faced. as of now, more than 1 million people in florida are without power. peco communications specialist craig smore, >> we know there will be a lot of work, preparing for the worst prior preparing for the put best >> this is part of 1800 utilities and employees heading south. >> this includes atlantic city electric and delmarva power as

west before moving up the west coast. >> i just had to console a coworker who was pretty devastated because he'll lose his house probably with the storm surge. and it's hard. >> reporter: a storm surge is one of the biggest concerns here in florida. the water could rise significantly even lifting a boat this size on to land >> what people don't realize is ten to 15 feet of storm surge above ground level, that's -- that's just devastating, it will go all up the coast >> the power is out to hundreds of thousands of customers and more than 100,000 people have flocked to shelters. >> very stressful. i didn't really know what to do. >> the state-wide size storm is massive. almost everyone in florida is bound to be affected one way or another. this storm producing tornados in parts of south florida. we're expecting the worst tonight. reporting in miami, stephanie

ramos, abc news. thank you, team touch continues with meteorologist chris sowers and chris, this is a major storm we're dealing with >> it's still a category 4. still packing winds of 130 miles per hour. and it now becomes the second category 4 storm to hit the united states within the past month. that's the first time that's happened in 102 years. the first time there's been two category 4 storms hit in the same season in 102 year, in 2005 we had katrina, wilma, but a lot weakened before landfall, katrina was a three when it made landfall around new orleans, unlike harvey who had which hit a couple of weeks ago, irma is not expected to stall. the storm is going to zip on by. therefore, rainfall totals what we're talking about these tropical systems should kept down to a minimum, six to 12

inches 50 inch, nonetheless coastal devastation is likely as the eye wall hugs the coast all the way up to marco island, getting into fort myers and tampa, st. pete area later this evening, amid the overnight hours, take a look at this massive wind field, we're piling the water on now across southern florida, naples, starting to see that storm surge move in same thing with the everglades, key west reporting a huge storm surge, eight to 12 feet above. in time, this will start to lift to the north. look at the massive wind field. as the storm lifts to the north, we got an on shore here piling the water on, places like cape canaveral, you're seeing a storm surge, and picking up the return on back side, the westerly piling the water on here in naples, we'll see the storm surge on the other side as it continues to lift to the north, the tampa area expecting six to

nine feet below average. then heads into georgia and the storm will weaken, these impacts are expected overnight. winds over 100 miles per hour, rainfall seven to ten inches, that wall of water coming in anywhere from six to nine feet. hurricane irma left more than a million people in the dark so far. many more power outages are expected in florida. >> but power companies in our area hope to turn that around, on their way down to the sunshine state. >> bob brooks is live spoke with some crews about how they plan to help. >> reporter: they want to get down there and oh to work, there's over a million people in florida and we're sure that number will rise. that don't have power. i'm at the peco station in eddy stone, i want to bring up video, this was approximately 10:30

this morning, you'll see trucks pulling out of here, that was at 30, truck car van, 50 employees from here, 150 contractors combined, 200 crew members on their parkway down to north carolina, they will stop and spend the night. in the morning, it's all hands-on deck, wherever they're directed to go, they will head to. southward, the keys, the might be parts of georgia or alabama, we know the damage and devastation from this hurricane is going to continue to grow, officials here say this is a chance for them to give back to the so many crews that helped them through super storm sandy and up to the challenge. take a listen >> there's going to be a lot of work, obviously preparing for the worse, hoping for the best. but our crews are standing by, making their way and ready to respond where they're needed the most. >> reporter: about 1800

employees from the delaware valley and surrounding areas are heading down south right now. again, with more than 1 million people without power, we know that number will continue to grow. is this going to be help that is much needed. reporting live in eddy stone, bob brooks, channel 6 action news. >> we wish those workers a safe trip. irma causing potentially life-threatening storms surges throughout the state of florida, one person captured this piece of video near miami where you can no longer tell where the ocean is supposed to start because the water and the waves are taking over areas of land there in miami. the surge ton as high as six to 12 feet in some area, we have shown you live pictures of florida all morning, this is a new live shot coming in from tallahassee. you can see the waves churning and the wind and you heard the governor say not too long when the wind dies down it's not over because the storm surge will be the problem there.

>> this will be a problem coast to coast but we're looking at the west coast right now >> it's a massive wind field. we were looking at the east coast. you can see the trees whip in the worst part of the storm is well far away. it's almost about maybe 50 to hundred miles away to the west. and yet you're still picking up that kind of wind on the east coast of florida. that kind of shows you how strong the system is, the tropical storm force winds extend 225 miles from the center of circulation or the doughnut hole you see, the eye, hurricane force winds extend 80 miles, and what we're seeing now is it's kind of growing at least in terms of the outer edges here, this eye wall starting to gather strength. currently winds of 130 gusting to 160 miles an hour. here's a better look on storm tracker 6 d.

that's where they're picking up the 160 miles per hour winds, each band producing tremendous amount of within, gusts coming out of key largo look at the distances, this is a massive wynnfield, the entire state is going to be impacted. all counties are under a state of emergency, all schools and universitying will be closed. the latest is about 25 miles to the northeast of key west, florida, mainland fall cou >> oe, pressure readings, winds of 130 miles per hour moving to the north at nine miles per hour. by 6:00 this evening, we expect it to maintain 130 miles an hour wind speeds and should come on

shore? around fort myers beach getting close to tampa and around 2:00 tonight early monday morning it will hug the coast line be north of tampa, 150 miles an hour, weakening a bit to category 4 and then monday night eventually tuesday, it will start to weaken dramatically as it loses its fuel source, the warm water the gulf of mexico. hurricane force winds 10:00 this evening, whole area, fort myers, naples, sarasota, tampa, the whole area seeing winds 75, 100 miles per hour, there had been some areas that pick up wind up to anti-trump 25 miles per hour, by 7:00, the wind field starts to lift to the north, gainsville moving into the tallahassee and then starts to weaken this area shrink as he were get to monday, the storm surge will be the worst part of the storm, the wall of water between nine and 12 feet fort

and it's now shaking we're just fearful it could give way and go whipping in the winds, we're at the point where it's not going to get better, we get occasional 30 seconds calm periods but that's followed by something worse, we know now that we're getting into the worst of it. latest forecast track has the eye going over marco island, which is just south of where we are and hitting naples 3:30 this afternoon, so many of you have been asking if we're safe and we appreciate that. this is our hotel whom. that clearly the balcony from which we've been broadcasting. come in here with me, if you will, i want to show you what we've done into this bedroom right here, we have taken the mattress and put it up against that window. behind that, another layer, just want to make sure if the window breaks, they're not shattering glass or anything. but this is not our shelter of
