the aftermath of irma as that storm continues to move north. >> we're starting to see the impact on south florida now that the storm has moved out. boats have been washed ashore roofs torn off and cranes have been toppled. but now all eyes are on north florida and coastal georgia tonight suffering record flooding as irma continues to move north. >> at this hour, two deaths have been couldn't confirmed, one in florida, one in georgia. there's reports of a third death coming in. more than 7 million people are without power. that includes more than half of the state of florida. and now the main concern is flooding and the storm surge. >> all right, we have team coverage tonight. meteorologist cecily tynan is tracking where irma is heading next. bob brooks has more on local relief efforts for the storm but we begin now with abc's marci gonzalez who is reporting from tampa florida tonight with the latest on irma. >> reporter: hi, rick and monica on this still windy day

a big sigh of relief for so many people that this storm didn't leave the kind of catastrophic damage that was expected in places like this. but irma is still leaving its mark. today flooding in charleston, savannah and breaking records in jacksonville. what was hurricane irma now moving north. while floridians statewide start to assess the destruction left by this giant storm. >> we got a lot of damage, a lot of cleanup. >> reporter: neighborhoods like this one in naples under water homes, airplanes and the front of this senior living center torn apart. >> it's unbelievable. >> reporter: trees uprooted, this one in bradenton taking part of a house with it. >> it's an incredible sight. >> reporter: the first image from the keys where irma made its initial u.s. landfall as a category four yesterday morning now coming in showing houses barely standing, cars buried beneath sand with bridges closed, residents who evacuated are now trying unsuccessfully to get back.

>> very anxious and we all just want to go home and see what's going on. >> reporter: irma's second landfall on marco island. >> total whiteout now. >> reporter: leaving damage and gratitude. >> we were getting pictures that we were going to have 10 to 15 feet of storm surge and we're grateful we were spared. >> reporter: a sentiment shared by so many in the sunshine state. >> it was not as bad as i thought it was going to be. >> reporter: even while florida's largest power company says as many as 9 million people still at one point today still had no electricity. >> no power, no internet. we're living like savages. [laughter] >> reporter: trying to have a sense of humor as crews from as far away as california work to get the lights back on for everyone but people are being warned, it could take weeks. in tampa florida, marci gonzalez channel6 "action news." >> all right, marci thank you. even though irma has weekend weakened to a tropical

storm her effects are being felt. >> even though monica isn't a hurricane there's still a lot left with it. if you look at this radar you can see just how big the storm s it's a tropical storm and we can measure the rain shield and the rain shield extends across about 700 miles. so, this is having a very large impact pulling in a lot of moisture especially across south carolina even tornado watches in effect there and that's the big problem now. charleston, south carolina reporting the third highest storm surge. the rain is decreasing in jacksonville but they have record flooding there, a record by more than a foot and a tropical storm warning be in effect for most of georgia and for the first time in history in atlanta. so, this is the latest from the national hurricane center. the center of now tropical storm irma 150 miles south of atlanta georgia moving west-northwest 17 miles an hour packing maximum sustained winds of 50 miles an hour.

at this point it's not the wind damage it's the rain that's the big problem with irma. irma will continue pushing to the northwest and then once it moves into the tennessee valley, it will essentially die off to a remnant low and then it starts to drift closer to us and it will have an impact on our weather. i'll explain why and details on hurricane josé in the full accuweather forecast. back to you. >> thank you cecily. >> right now more local help is headed to florida to help with the recovery efforts of irma. 23 members of the pennsylvania incident management team left harrisburg today and are expected to be deployed for up to two weeks. >> that's right. but it's not just florida that needs help. this is new video from the caribbean where irma's wrath was felt in full force. communities around the u.s. and british virgin islands are in shambles tonight. many have been without power for nearly a week. >> now an aid group has set up shop in philadelphia in hopes of helping recovery efforts on the island. "action news" reporter bob brooks continues our team coverage in the northeast. bob, good evening. >> reporter: good evening,

rick and monica. it's happening at the northeast philadelphia airport. you know, when irma hit, parts of the caribbean, it was at its peak, a category five hurricane. well, now, there's a lot of people down there in desperation. they'll get some help from right here at the airport. behind me it's the atlantic aviation company, when you walk through those doors right now there's an effort going on inside we hope that grows much, much bigger. a quick walk through the lobby of atlantic aviation and then a ride down the runway. there's a modest campaign of relief growing at the northeast philadelphia airport and there's hope that it becomes much bigger. >> you have diapers, you have rice. >> reporter: these are just volunteers that care about the u.s. virgin islands who are calling philadelphia home for the next few days. >> tarp. >> reporter: the goal to connect donations to take to saint john's and saint thomas after being ravaged by then category five hurricane irma. >> last couple days have been super dire. there's been no government interaction. there's very limited national guard. stuff is getting stolen,

looted. >> reporter: that's steve. he lives in saints john but escaped the storm. as you heard he says conditions are getting worse and worse and help is desperately needed. do you think this kind of stuff will help alleviate that desperation. >> absolutely. >> reporter: he and friends who are state side came to philadelphia. they created the virgin islands relief. what they need daily supplies, food, drink, anything first aid. >> all the stuff that people need in a situation like this when there are no grocery stores open. >> reporter: inside this trailer that was donated heavy duty stuff that's going to be needed chainsaws almost a dozen. several tents for camping and inflatable mattresses things that are going to be so important in this massive cleanup effort. for those within driving distance of the airport you can bring a car load of donations like stephanie and vaughn. >> they're in desperate need. >> reporter: for those too far away to drive you can see amazon boxes scattered everywhere. you can mail supplies right to atlantic aviation. >> it's huge for our deal.

[bell tolls] that included thousands of people who gathered at the site of the attacks here in lower manhattan. this morning the names of every single victim were read

aloud as a tribute to their lives and legacy. >> in washington, hundreds more gathered at the pentagon, another target of the attacks. president trump spoke to the crowd this morning, his first september 11th ceremony as commander-in-chief. vice president moss mike pence laid a wreath where flight 93 crashed along with friends and family of those on board. those passengers charged the cockpit in an attempt to regain control of the plane from the highjackers who had taken it over. flight 93 was the only plane that day that hit its intended target. >> people in our area also remember the victims of september 11th today. the action cam in mantua gloucester county for the town's annual patriot day ceremony. today's memorial a tribute to three gloucester county residents killed in the attack and all the others who also died that day. hamilton township held a remembrance ceremony as well

for hamilton residents were killed in the attacks. a steel beam from the world trade center now sits in veterans park in their honor. >> well, for some of the memories of 9/11 are still clear but very raw. for others it's now a moment in history making its impact years later. >> "action news" reporter katherine scott has that story from limerick. >> ♪ >> reporter: at this ceremony outside western montgomery career and technology center in limerick, they stood in silence, students, faculty, local first responders, military. for some, the details of september 11th 2001 are still vivid. >> i remember 9/11 specifically. beautiful day just like today, blue skies and sun. >> reporter: a day that had a profound effect on the country. on first responders everywhere like limerick fire company battalion chief scott miles. >> i remember the tragedy, where i was, the sadness that i had in my heart.

and the reaction of my family when i got home imupper perkiomen high school 11th grader zachary was only one when the towers fell. he's wants to serve in the army. doesn't have his own memories of 9/11 but for him that does not diminish the day's significance. >> i think that it was important to show that 9/11 was history but we haven't forgotten about it. >> reporter: protective services is one of 18 programs at the center where students get hands on experience in their chosen career paths. many students in the protective services program go on to join the military or become local first responders. learning about this terror attack is vital. >> heading into that field and there's the one that run to the fires or run to the emergency when that people are running away. so i think it's really important that they have this opportunity to learn about it. it's a somber day, a day of reflection and for some of these students, a day that reaffirms what they want to do. zachary remembers the fallen.

>> makes me want to even more to know that i would be protecting the country and people i love. >> reporter: in limerick katherine scott, channel6 "action news. >> time for a check of our "action news" traffic report monday night. >> let's go live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. >> we're thinking red, white and blue and we're seeing lots of red brake lights and travel times here along 95 southbound side. we're on the brakes from cottman through this point at allegheny. they're wrapping up the remnants of this vehicle fire. now mostly off to the right shoulder but it's a 46 minute ride about three times what it should be along 95 southbound because of that earlier vehicle fire by allegheny. over on the schuylkill just one vehicle left with that eastbound accident at the conshohocken curve. that's all off to the side but still slow. then the crash approaching girard approaching the zoo has cleared but jams still there back to city avenue. a crash in hatboro by the dunkin donuts and the cvs along county line close to york road but in lower gwynedd our issues along welsh road

>> police question a man in a shooting in north philadelphia but no charges have been filed. the victim was shot in the back at about 12:30 this morning at 12th street and west susquehanna avenue. police responded quickly because they were actually in the area at the time they heard the shots. officers questioned a man who sped off from the scene. the victim remains at temple university hospital tonight. philadelphia officials came together today to let daca eligible youth know they have help as they face a big challenge ahead. the dreamers initiative is a new fundraising campaign that

will help philadelphia's 5,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the u.s. as children. president trump announced last week he's phasing out the daca program that allows them to have permits to work. there is an october 5th deadline to apply for a permit renewal. this new initiative will help pay the $495 fee needed to apply. >> ♪ >> health check tonight the government has put out an alert about an outbreak linked to contact with puppies. >> that's right. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman is at the big board to run down the details for us. >> this is affecting our area. the puppies were sold through pet land. that's a national chain. the cdc says some dogs or puppies there may be carrying a bacteria. 39 people have gotten sick in the past year and nine were hospitalized. they're from seven states including pennsylvania. pet land has four pennsylvania stores including one in bucks county. it causes diarrhea, vomiting

or a fever. the cdc says whenever you have contact with dogs or puppies you want to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. a tick which causes an unusual allergy to red meat seems to be spreading. the lone star tick named for a spot on its back used to be limited to eastern and southeastern states but it's now showing up in minnesota, missouri and eastern long island. the allergy is hard to pin down because the reaction can be delayed. >> people have gone weeks to months trying to figure out what is causing the reaction bought it happens so far away from when they ate the food. >> when ticks bite they transfer a sugar called alpha gal. people develop antibodies do to it and have severe reactions when they eat meat. the only known treatment is just to avoid eating meat until the allergy goes away and that can take years. rick and monica, back to you. >> all right, ali, thank you. >> still ahead on "action news" at 5:00 a record

>> time for the accuweather forecast monday night. >> that's right. meteorologist cecily tynan here with details for the week ahead. it's been a busy one. >> yeah, down to the south dealing with horrible weather. here it's beautiful weather. high pressure in control head to the "action news" weather center taking a look at cape may where some people are on the beaches, it's breezy, low humidity, loads of sunshine and as we head toward the middle of next week we will begin to feel the effects of

irma. really more just the humidity. it will turn tropical as far as the air mass and it will also bring us a threat of showers wednesday, thursday, friday and possibly even into saturday and then of course we still have hurricane josé just spinning out in the atlantic. more on that system in a few moments. but temperature-wise pretty comfortable out there. definitely on the cool side again. that's been the trend this september. philadelphia 75 allentown 76. and atlantic city 74. dover 73 and trenton currently 75 degrees. so, satellite and radar showing really the big story. the only thing happening in our country right now is irma now a tropical storm. and you can see how it continues to spin up to the northwest. it's moving out of florida, the center has moved out, it's pulling all the heavy rain out of there. south carolina and georgia really getting hit with the heavy rain right now and that will continue to push to the northwest. so, tonight just a few clouds around, very comfortable, 59 in philadelphia, 52 degrees allentown, cape may 59 and

trenton 54 degrees. tomorrow we start the day with a good amount of sunshine. as we head into the afternoon the clouds will increase especially areas to the south and that will cap temperatures around 80 degrees. at 10 o'clock, 69. by 4 o'clock, 79 degrees. it should be a dry day. wednesday is when we begin to see kind of the outer bands of what's left of irma begin to move in. 10 o'clock clouds and some showers moving up from the southwest and a threat of showers right into the weekend but no day will be a washout. hurricane josé, if you look at this you can see this is not a very organized storm. it's now decreased to a cat two hurricane. the big impact along the east coast for the next several days will be the risk of rip currents and the spaghetti plots show that josé will just meander out in the atlantic for the next several days and then where will it head? will it head out to sea? will it head towards the midatlantic, towards florida? these extend out a week so at this point it is too early to tell but right

tropical storm. it lost its strength but not its ability to bring widespread flooding and damage. >> jacksonville was inundated by a record setting storm surge. something officials are not expecting. irma is slamming georgia and south carolina with strong winds and heavy rain. >> the first area to feel the full force of hurricane irma was the florida keys and today for the first time officials got a first look at the damage. ground zero of the hurricane hit in marathon. the national guard has arrived in the island chain. state transportation officials have cleared six out of 42 bridges as safe for travel however roads remain closed because of debris and fuel is still a concern. also there is no water, no power and no cell service in the keys. >> the second landfall of irma happened in marco island just south of naples in the fort myers air. the storm surge is expected to be above 10 feet but thankfully it wasn't nearly that high. however, the winds and driving

rains did significant damage. many roofs were ripped from homes and numerous trees were downed. tonight there is no running water in naples and no power. there's also no telling when crews will be able to get fourth back up and running any time soon. >> as we mentioned the northern part of florida wall street's major averages lopped by irma this morning with an unexpected storm surge. in jacksonville the saint john's river burst its banks and sent rushing water into every direction and in addition. far away system governor rick scott explained how a short time ago. >> hurricane josé is also pushing water into the northern part of our state which is prevent, the water from flowing out as fast. >> also officials are telling floridians that just because the storm has left the state doesn't mean that it's safe to go home. they're urging everyone to wait until roads are cleared of debris downed power lines and flooding. stay with "action news" as

we continue to follow the very latest developments in the aftermath of irma. anchor brian taff will be along in our next half hour with a live report from naples, florida. you can also see more on our web site at 6abc.com. >> now first at 5:30 a man on a trip to the grocery store risked his life to help a police officer struggling with a shoplifting suspect. but the dramatic story does not end there. new jersey correspondent nora muchanic live outside the shop rite in brooklawn with the rest of the story. good evening, nora. >> reporter: hi there monica. it was supposed to be a quick trip to the store while his mother took a nap but it turned out to be much more than that for a local man who aided police chasing a suspect and wound up getting hit by the getaway car. >> this guy's running out. eyes as big as saucers and he had three or four boxes and they kept telling him to stop. >> reporter: 56-year-old john kotch of gloucester city ran to this shop rite in

brooklawn last wednesday to pick up a few things. that's where he ran into these two. conwell becton and anthony marcione. a police officer chased marcione down and was struggling to subdue him. >> i think the guy was grabbing for his gun. that's when i said, you know, i jumped on top of him and held him down. >> reporter: soon after becton put the car in reverse almost hitting the officer an shop rite security guard. he then put it in drive and then headed towards kotch. >> he put it in gear and as i'm running over, he headed for me and i ended up on the hood and then off of the side of the car and out into the drive way. my neck. i landed on my knees. my left knee is still hurting me. >> reporter: kotch is a retired employee of philadelphia electric who has raised nine kids and has eight grandchildren. he cares full time for his 88-year-old mother who has alzheimer's. he was at the shop rite picking up food for her when this all happened. brooklawn police posted a

thank you to john kotch on their facebook page for being a good samaritan. it says although he didn't have to he echoes to assist an officer he felt was in need and we cannot thank him enough for that. his run to the store turned out to be may wore exciting than anticipated but kotch says jumping on that suspect was the right thing to do. >> i would do it again. i mean, you can't print things, you don't know how things are going to be but you have to do what's right. >> reporter: now both men are facing numerous charges including robbery, eluding and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle. john kotch is still nursing some bruises but he says he's okay. police chef tells us that city council will honor him soon for his actions. live in brooklawn, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> terrific. thank you nora. an overturned tanker truck furled traffic in burlington county. the truck flipped about 6:00 a.m. and immediately started

leaking some sort of liquid. traffic was rerouted so crews could clean up the spill and remove the wreck camp. the driver was taken to the hospital to be checked out. >> well, today hundreds of people gathered at the site of the 9/11 terror attacks. the president and vice president spoke this morning about that day and president trump also spoke about the ongoing devastation from hurricanes harvey and irma. abc's emily rau now has more from washington, d.c. tonight. >> reporter: president trump and first lady melania beginning the day with a moment of silence on the south lawn of the white house before visiting the pentagon. >> today our entire nation grieves with you. and with every family of those innocent souls who were murdered by terrorists 16 years ago. >> reporter: the president spoke of unity and strength using the occasion to acknowledge the millions of americans affected by hurricanes harvey and irma.

killed at the pentagon. president trump laid a wreath at the pentagon memorial today to remember them. in washington, emily rau, channel6 "action news". >> back here students at upper dublin high school paid tribute to the victims of 9/11 by placing small american flags outside the school. it was part of a project created by the senior class. they put together a video sharing the history of the 9/11 attacks. they also had a special speaker into school today, artie van why who wrote that day in september came in to share his account of the day at ground 016 years ago. several cannon blasts and bell rings honored the fallen during 9/11 ceremonies in atlantic city this morning. mayor don guardian was and joined by members of the military police and firefighters as well as those who lost loved ones in the

season, pretty soon we'll kind of whiten up this scene here as we get ready for another fantastic season ahead. but those dewpoints are in the 40's and the 50 right now. again that's that very comfy air that has been in play for the last few days. 46 philadelphia, 50 allentown and trenton but as we move forward here, tomorrow again not a bad day how it's going to feel. very comfortable with that dewpoint at 54. then we bounce it up into the mid and upper 60's wednesday through the end of the week so again, you're going to feel the weight of the atmosphere when you head outdoors and that will get us into trouble for on and off showers and a lot of clouds. so, as we look at the forecast temperature-wise right now, 76 in allentown, 75 in trenton. so, everyone in the middle 70's still below average for this time of year but it has felt so nice to be outdoors in that sunshine without really breaking a sweat. high pressure has been our friend with respect to all that sunshine and low humidity but it is also was what is holding irma at bay way down

to the south and this high is so dry that it is ripping a lot of moisture apart and it will continue to do that here tomorrow but it is allowing some high clouds to stream in ahead of irma with the actual circulation now just to the south of atlanta, sustained winds down to 50 miles an hour, so fairly soon it will not even be a tropical storm anymore, it will be a depression and then eventually just a remnant low but still bringing severe weather, strong winds tornado watches parts of charlton south carolina and heavy rain in northern georgia into parts of the tennessee valley. for us it's partly cloudy with lows 52 to 59 with a very light wind out of the west-southwest. areas of high pressure protecting us for one more day tomorrow with sunshine and some high clouds with low humidity and temperatures back to normal of around 80 degrees and then a warm front swings in here on wednesday, throws a lot of clouds our way. the humidity comes up, on and off showers, showers not a

wash out, 77 and the actual center of what was irma will ride through here on friday with an additional shower or two but no heavy rain. hurricane josé is out there category two storm, winds at 100 miles an hour moving to the north at 12. will bring rip currents this entire week along the east coast. it will kind of do a circle here as we get into the next couple of days and then start to aim towards the southeast coast over the weekend as a category one. the problem is there will be a high pressure to the north so it really can't move out to sea so we have to see if it continues on that direction or does it curve up the coast. we'll have to follow this closely especially as we go into this time next week. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, 80 tomorrow, sun and some high clouds and then wednesday, thursday and friday every day is pretty similar, very humid, lots of clouds, on and off showers here and there and that even continues into saturday with temps in the upper 70's but again those upper 70's won't feel all that pleasant with the humidity and then we'll dry it out sunday into monday

>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with ducis rodgers, meteorologist cecily tynan and jim gardner. >> ♪ >> it is monday night and the big story on "action news" tonight is hurricane irma even though she is now a tropical storm, she is still wreaking havoc in parts of florida. this is jacksonville. it is the city under siege. the city is experiencing some of its worst flooding in 100 years. officials have been telling people living near the saint john's river to get out and get out now. irma has left enormous

destruction in its wake. nowhere was harder hit than the keys where the hurricane first came ashore but florida's major metropolitan areas are showing the scars of the storm like part of the roof torn off the miami marlins baseball stadium. trees have been felled across the state knocking out power lines to the tune of six and a half million customers without electricity. authorities are reporting only one irma related death in florida but the caribbean death toll stands at 36.
