and hello, everyone. good morning. we begin with the bipartisan dinner at the white house leading to an apparent deal and confusion. >> the two top democrats in the house and senate say they've cut an immigration deal with the president to replace the defunct daca program but conflicts details about the border wall. with chinese food and chocolate pie on the menu, president trump had dinner with new friends, democratic leaders chuck schumer and nancy pelosi. >> any message from the white house today? >> reporter: at first it sounded like it went well and schumer and pelosi said the meeting was productive and both sides reached an agreement to protect the d.r.e.a.m.ers. that agreement was in ex-change for new border security measures but did not include money for the president's signature promise. a border wall. >> build the wall. >> reporter: but but less than a

half hour later sarah sanders disputed the claim tweeting while daca and border security were both discussed excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to. schumer's spokesman said the president made clear he would continue pushing the wall, just not as part of this agreement. >> pleased to welcome this bipartisan group of democrats and republican lawmakers to the white house. >> reporter: before the dinner president trump held another bipartisan meeting where he sounded more like a democrat when it came to taxes. >> if they have to go higher they'll go higher, frankly. >> reporter: it all has the white house answering about where the president stands. >> the idea that the republican party ideas are not represented in that room is just ridiculous. this president's done more for bipartisanship in the last eight days than obama did in eight years. >> this is the president's second deal with the two lawmakers. he once referred to them as a clown and a loser. last week he stunned fellow republicans by siding with democrats to raise the u.s. debt limit and extend the current

budget for just three months. well, the president heads to the sunshine state today and that will be his main focus, florida. where a criminal investigation is now under way following a deadly nursing home incident. >> eight senior citizens died in that heat after the hurricane knocked out air-conditioning at the facility and even though there was a hospital right across the street, abc's tom llamas has more from hollywood. >> reporter: a life and death situation at this nursing home. the rehabilitation center at hollywood hills, the first sign of trouble an emergency call about a heart attack. but it soon became clear it was much more serious. >> the facility called and said that incidents were occurring. something's going on in the center, unknown how many patients or their injuries. >> reporter: what came next an all out evacuation. >> it was chaotic when i arrived. we had at least 115 patients we were trying to evacuate and bring them to safety. >> reporter: the scope of this tragedy heartbreaking. eight people dead. three at the nursing home and

five more later at the hospital. the nursing home was running on generators since hurricane irma hit. the lights on, but no air-conditioning. ellie came to visit her 96-year-old mother here shortly after the hurricane struck. could you see the suffering? >> yes, i did. yes, i did. >> reporter: what's also troubling, the nursing home is just yards away from one of the biggest hospitals in the area. >> we're conducting a criminal investigation and not ruling anything out at this time. >> reporter: florida's governor says the health department had been in contact with the nursing home over the past three days and told them to call 911 if they had any reason to believe the patients were at risk. >> we depend on those people in those facilities to care for our most vulnerable elderly population. >> reporter: tom llamas, abc news at hollywood hills, florida. and the u.s. death toll from irma has now risen to at least 30 with millions of people still with no power. the military is flying food and water into key west where search

and rescue crews are still going door to door looking for possible victims and thousands of desperate residents remain isolated with bare necessities in short supply. >> we got some water and food and my son can eat. >> for your son. >> we should have evacuated but we thought we will be okay but thank god we finally got something. we're going to get help down here, please, everybody. come help us. >> local officials are disputing fema's claim that 90% of the homes there were damaged saying it's not as bad as it looks. seven people have died in the county that includes the keys, but it's not clear h irma. and officials in the hard hit u.s. virgin islands say it could be several weeks before full power an water is restored there. one church leader calls the territory a destruction zone, more than a week after irma hit, president trump is expected to

travel to the area in the next week. three businesses in texas are being charged with price gouging during hurricane harvey. a hotel allegedly charged three times its original room rate during the storm. two gas station owners are also charged. one accused of selling fuel for almost $10 a gallon. the businesses could face stiff fines if found guilty. now let's take a look at your weather. hurricane jose is slowly churning out in the atlantic with winds of 75 miles an hour. but be careful if you're heading to the beach this weekend on the east coast, it's causing high surf and rip currents straight up and down the east. and forecasters say a direct hit from jose next week cannot be ruled out. at least not now. in the meantime, just over a week away from the start of fall, it's still feeling like the middle of the summer today across most of the nation. 96 in dallas.

a candlelight vigil vigil as well at a nearby shopping center. that stunned community gathered to mourn. hours earlier the scene at freeman high school was chaotic with worried parents rushing to reunite with their terrified children. the shooter is in custody. a school custodian is being credited with stopping the rampage by ordering that boy to surrender. police haven't released the or motive but reportedly say he may have been bullied. also on the west coast more dozen marines recovering this morning after their amphibious vehicle caught fire in san diego county that happened during a training exercise. 15 marines rushed to the hospital. eight of them transported to a burn center. now, the command is investigating the cause of the incident but one official said the vehicle got stuck and caught fire as the marines were trying to free it. in arizona, a man is facing deportation after a hotel tipped off immigration agents he was there. that's according to the man's lawyer who claims a motel six in

phoenix was sending its guests -- its guest list to i.c.e. agents and says that's not legal. it's up to the hotel whether or not -- illegal, rather. it's up to them to protect their privacy. a spokesperson said the policy of sharing information has been discontinued. a bit of controversy for steve mnuchin, the treasury secretary. he asked for use of a government jeso he and his new wife, louise, could go on their european honeymoon this summer. it would have cost taxpayers several hundred dollars -- several hundred thousand dollars. mnuchin, by the way, is worth at least $300 million. the treasury officials questioned how it would look if he used a government plane for a personal trip. the mnuchins wound up paying for their own travel but now the inspector general is looking at all of the requests mnuchin has made for government jets. hillary clinton says she didn't realize things weren't going her way until election

a wildfire that's been raging in washington state is now covering more than 53 square miles. more than 800 firefighters are battling that jolly mountain fire. this morning it's just 15% contained, but so far no damaged homes and no serious injuries. a pregnant high school teacher from maryland who had been missing for more than a week has been found dead buried in a shallow grave. >> police are awaiting autopsy result force 31-year-old laura wallen but have now charged her boyfriend, tessier tessier with her murder. on monday tessier appeared with her family pleading for her safe return. >> if somebody has her, police understand that you've taken away a huge, a huge person and so many people's lives. >> and police say they don't yet have a motive for wallen's murder but do believe tessier was the father of her unborn
