issued for the coast from delaware to cape cod. hurricane jose is tracking north, bringing wind and rain that could mean rough surf and even some flooding at the shore. sunday night and the big story on action news tonight is the approach of hurricane jose. >> that's right. the storm is now a category one and while the current track has it moving well off the coast, jose's effects will be felt. >> meteorologist melissa mcgee has been tracking this storm for the last few days and joins us now with the latest on the path. >> yes, sarah and walter, we are tracking jose. and the latest update has the storm as a category one hurricane with maximum sustained winds at 90 miles per hour. it's about 305 miles to the southeast of north carolina. so it's moving to the north at about 9 miles per hour. right now it is in the gulf stream. it is in water that is fairly warmer than at our latitude. so as we put this into motion and it moves to the north, it will start to weaken. and we will find some fluctuation in the strength of this track over the next couple

of days. but you notice, even on its most person path, it stays well offshore of the jersey coast and the delaware beaches. but it does weaken to winds of 75 miles per hour by tuesday evening. the wind speed, however, with this storm and the wind field will expand as we get into monday into tuesday. that's why a tropical storm watch has been issued for the jersey beaches and delaware as well. so as far as what we can expect, indirect impacts as a result of jose. a brush of rain for philadelphia and points to the south and east. wave heights anywhere from 10-15 feet high at the coast. minor to moderate coastal flooding, especially at the time of high tide. and winds inland gusting as high as 35 miles per hour. but at the coast, you have the gusts, tropical storm force. up to 45 miles per hour. so this takes into effect as we get into monday night right through wednesday morning. we have more details on jose plus our weather back here at home with the full and exclusive

accuweather forecast. back your way, guys. >> thank you, melissa. you can start to see the impact at the jersey shore. north wildwood a few hours ago. the churning surf a prelude of things to come. meanwhile, this life guard shack in cape may. they pulled it away from the shoreline. and a week after hurricane irma, people who lived in the florida keys were allowed to run home today. their relief was coupled with heartbreak. many returned to find their houses are gone. while rescue crews are going door-to-door, trying to make contact with survivors. we continue to track hurricane jose throughout the night. an early start tomorrow to bring you the latest or not storm and the impact on the east coast. join them at 4 a.m. in other news tonight, cabrini university is investigating a picture spreading across social media that shows racist graffiti

written on a student's dorm room door. christie ileto spoke with the victim and joins us from the cabrini campus in radner. >> reporter: she said this stuff happened at other schools but never thought it would happen to her here. a racial slur smeared on her dorm room door, specifically directed towards her. >> as i'm opening the door, i see the slur that's kind of faded right here. >> reporter: this is a picture of the hate speech inked on cabrini university freshman's sydney's door. we blurred out a portion because of the vulgar nature. you're the only minority in this room. >> i'm the only minority in this room. >> reporter: at that moment you know this is directed specifically to you. >> yes. i was shocked. i was angry. i was confused as to why such a thing would be written on my door. >> reporter: cabrini university tells action news they're investigating the report and released a statement reading

in part, cabrini does not tolerate any form of hate speech or racist language and our priority remains to make our students feel safe and supported. we spotted flyers posted in the hallways reading mandatory meeting to address the incident. they were able to scrub it off the door. she worries it will escalate to more than just words. >> i get a little bit emotional when i look at this. because i don't know if this will ever truly genuinely go away off the door. and every time i look at it, it will be a reminder of someone's hatred towards me because of the color of my skin. >> reporter: again, the university is investigating the report. she is meeting with the dean of students monday morning. live in radner, illinois. channel 6 action news. >> all right, thank you, christie. within the past hour we learned

that teachers in the ma effectton school district will go on strike. the teachers union sent notification of the intent to walk off the job. many districts flow employees working without a contract. two well-dressed thieves targeted an 87-year-old woman in south philadelphia this morning. forcing their way into her home and committing a violent robbery. neighbors say they saw the suspects behind the home on the 3100 block of south 20th street. investigators say they knocked on the back door and forced their way inside. one of the suspects was armed and threw the woman to the ground and took her jewelry. residents of this quiet neighborhood are shaken. >> never think that somebody would come into your house and do such a horrible thing. >> the woman was not seriously injured, but her daughter took her to a local hospital just to

get checked out. a community is mourning the death of a former professional boxer from philadelphia who died during an industrial accident in camden. david bey challenged larry holmes for the heavy weight title in 1985. holmes won the fight. and seen in the photo with boxing great muhammad ali. he was a piledriver with local carpenters 179. and while working on cooper street on wednesday he was hit by a steel sheet pile. federal investigators are looking into the accident. david bay was only 60 years old. time to talk to the eagles. a great fight against the kansas city chiefs today. made a run in the fourth quarter, but came up short. jamie apody has highlights in a game that could have gone either way. >> be proud any way. the eagles can say that they're taller than we thought, but still short. held the chiefs to just six points at the half.

but the better team got the best of them. it was fun to watch doug pederson try to outcoach his mentor, andy reid. a 6-3 lead, and finds jeffrey giving the birds three. but that was the last of the game. and in the fourth quarter, kelsey put the chiefs ahead for good. leaping 15-yard score. made it 20-13. and after recovering an onsides kick, the eagles had a chance at a miracle on the last play of the game. but it was an unanswered prayer. eagles lose it 27-20. wentz was 25 of 36 for 333 yards and two touchdowns, but picked off once, sacked six times. it was a game of close, but no cigar. >> that's football. we learned it last year. a lot of close ball games we didn't find a way to win. last week pulled it out on the road. this week, a little short. again, a good football team. a lot of things we did well and can fix. we will learn from it. >> however the game plays out, we try to find a way to win at the end.

time for a check of the accuweather forecast. so far no indication this thing is going to make land fall on the eastern sea board. >> jose looks to stay offshore by a good 200 miles. we will be indirectly impacted monday night through wednesday. we'll talk about the details and show a picture outside. the action cam was outside earlier today in cape may new jersey. and some time lapse video showing you a life guard station that we're looking at. and then later on tonight, it was tilted over. so there will be some concerns at the coast as we go throughout the next 24-48 hours here as we begin tracking he say. but if you are at the coast, there is a concern with rip

currents and beach erosion. look at the weather headlines, the latest on jose, the stats and the track of the storm and coastal impacts parallelling the east coast. large waves, once again, a big concern. right now in philadelphia, 69. 67 in allentown, 70 in beach haven. out to the west in lan it'ser, upper 60s. the temperature once again across the region, stay in the upper 60s. here is satellite 6 and action radar. partly cloudy and dry. but look off to the east, out in the atlantic. and we already have some of the clouds from jose billowing up and moving into our region. so the storm for the most part will stay offshore. for the day tomorrow, we're dry for the majority. it's clouds and sun, staying humid. high temperature in philadelphia, 82. 80 in lancaster. 77 in dover. toms river, 79. and trenton tomorrow, a high temperature of 80, 81 in

allentown. the latest with jose. it is still a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds at 90 miles per hour. moving to the north at about 9 miles per hour. as this moves to the north, it will reach our latitude and the waters are relatively cooler in comparison to the gulf stream down to the south. so we will find some intensity that will start to weaken into tuesday evening. and this stays well offshore of the jersey beaches from the delaware beaches. but the wind field with this storm will likely expand. that's why that tropical storm watch has been issued. look at the chances of tropical storm winds closer to home along the immediate coast from surf city down to atlantic city. the beach not so much included in that. but 30% chance of finding tropical storm-force winds. so calling for gusts anywhere from 40-45 miles per hour at the coast. so we look at the indirect impacts as a result of jose. monday evening, right through wednesday morning, waves of 10-15 feet high. rip currents and beach erosion.

inland gusts in philadelphia as high as 35 miles per hour. but at the coast, 45 miles per hour. we also have hurricane maria. the tropics are heating up here. this has winds at 80 miles per hour and more than likely strengthening into a major hurricane moving over puerto rico and hispaniola into the middle of the week. busy over the next seven days. clouds and sun tomorrow, high of 82. showers around on tuesday as a result of jose. windy at the coast, a high of 78. jose passes and turning sunny on wednesday. high of 86. thursday, dry with high pressure returning. 84. a warm start to fall on friday. little after 4:00 in the afternoon. a high of 84. and summer-like as we get into next weekend, guys, with the highs in the lower 80s. tracking jose throughout the rest of the week. >> all right, melissa, thank you. television's biggest night. handing out the prime time emmy awards. it was the night for cable and
