ur >> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and meteorologist, david murphy. >> ♪ >> good morning. it's 4:00 a.m. on this tuesday september 19th. >> we're on a half hour early this morning as we track hurricane jose. >> the category one storm is far off the coast but it is churning surf and causing strong currents at area beaches. we'll have team coverage from the jersey shore. >> hurricane maria wavers from a super strong category five storm to a now still extremely dangerous four and threatens islands still cleaning up from irma. >> let's get going taking a first look at your weather and traffic. we've got dave murphy and

karen rogers. good morning. >> maria is really a monster. my thoughts with everyone in the path. we have a storm for us. >> it doesn't have major impacts on our area. as you take a look at satellite you can see that there is cloud cover obviously pouring in off the ocean and we're getting close to seeing some rain bands as well. these are on the way in on storm tracker6 live double scan but at 4:00 a.m., they're still off the coast so if you're down on the beach on the boardwalk you might be able to get a little bit of a quick walk in before that rain becomes an issue. it is getting blustery down the shore and even though we're not looking at tropical storm force winds coming in off the water it will be a little bit blustery and gusty today. 72 degrees right now in philadelphia. 68 allentown, 70 trenton, 71 in wilmington and 71 in cape may, new jersey, and as we roll through the day expect it to be cloudy breezy and at times damp with a little rain popping through in the form of some showers around i-95 and perhaps a little bit more rain down the shore. 74 degrees by noon. 77 degrees by 3 o'clock.

75 by 5 o'clock and still rather cloudy by 7 o'clock with a temperature of 73. if your kids are on the bus stop this morning, it looks like the temperatures aren't too bad. 67 degrees in the suburbs. 71 in center city. cloudy and a little bit on the humid side. so far so good on the rain though. as we take a look at shore issues, however, we are looking at wind gusts coming in along the beach. not all that strong right now. 25 miles per hour gusts in beach haven, 17 in cape may and this is going to change in the story today. the gusts will get a little bit higher than this as we get closer to the center of josé coming up the coast but it's not going to be as bad as originally suspected. the there's a coastal flood warning until 1 o'clock in the morning on wednesday and the big concern would be high tides. the morning high tide probably only minor flooding but moderate between 7:30 and 8:30. the breakers will be somewhere between the 10 to 8-foot variety enough to churn up the seas and give you rip currents

and beach erosion. more on josé and maria coming up. >> we'll be watching the coast to see if we see coastal flooding to see if that impacts your commute. along the garden state parkway everything is clear and dry at the cape may toll plaza. southbound traffic we saw one or two cars headed towards wildwood. nobody in sight at the moment on the garden state parkway so looking pretty good out here. let's take you outside live to bucks county. we see flashing lights on i-95 at route one. construction blocks the left lane. should be clear in an hour. no delay yet and a vehicle stopped off to the side but traffic is very light so no big problems here even through the construction zone on i-95. looking on the vine street expressway, we can see it's still shut down for the overnight construction. again, this is scheduled to clear in about an hour but in the meantime no vine for you. the ramps out there are closed as well as the vine street expressway. crews will return at 11 o'clock and shut the vine down. on the schuylkill at gulf mills no delays just yet, matt and tam.

>> thank you, karen. hurricane jose is well away from the east coast but the storm is causing dangerous surf and rip currents. >> swimming is not advised today along the new jersey and delaware beaches. plus, waves as high as 15 feet could cause beach erosion and minor flooding. >> we have reporters the the new jersey shore. bob brooks is live in wildwood. we'll get started with jeanette reyes in ocean city. good morning, jeanette. >> reporter: good morning, tam. we are noticing the waves are kicking up and the surf is increasingly rough. we also started feeling especially within the last few minutes some strong gusts of wind. take a live look behind me. i'm going to show you what we're feeling right now. you can see the flags in the distance. this is kind of coming and going similar to what dave said and we do expect it to get a little stronger as the day progresses. i want to show you the waters. it's a bit dark but the waves are certainly crashing onto the shore here and we also expect that to get stronger throughout the day. this is all of course the result of hurricane jose which

is churning up the southern part of the east coast. for many residents last night the tall waves than anticipated active weather was an excited sight to take in but there are some warnings to heed. we're expecting some dangerous rip currents, rough surf, beach erosion and of course that pounding surf along the delaware beaches and the jersey shore. today some locations could see some tropical storm winds and one to 2 inches of rain. we're keeping an eye on everything out here. the best that we would suggest as far as how close you could get to the water what we saw yesterday, maybe take some pictures. the last thing you want to do is get in this water. the surf is pretty rough and we expect that to be increasingly so throughout the day. we'll keep you posted as far as what we see out here. reporting live in ocean city, jeanette reyes, channel6 "action news." matt and tam. >> thank you, jeanette. now let's switch live to "action news" reporter bob brooks who is in north wildwood cape may county. pretty windy there this

morning, bob. >> reporter: matt, good morning. absolutely. conditions are starting to get worse and worse throughout the morning. we've been stationed here for about a half hour at the end of j.f.k. and second and the wind gusts are just steadily picking up. i have my wind gauge in my hand right now. this morning they were at about 10 miles an hour, 11. now they're up to about 20 and as the wind picks up, you can see the waves behind me, they are getting bigger and bigger, too, this morning. they're white caps crashing against the rocks and suddenly they're getting closer and closer to where we are and we are elevated a good 10, 15 feet above the water from where we're standing right now and as jeanette was saying, people were worried about beach erosion, things like that as these big tides come in and these strong currents come in. so far looking down at the beach, the waves haven't gone that far up yet here and started any kind of erosion like that but something to keep an eye on. here's the main thing. do not go out in the water today. we've seen reports of rescues throughout the week because of

josé. and today conditions are going to get worse and worse as it gets closer and moves up the coastline so the biggest piece of advice to everyone is stay clear of going out to the water until this storm blows through. reporting live in north wildwood, bob brooks channel6 "action news." >> thanks bob. we'll check in with you later. let's go live top to mobile6 on the atlantic city expressway heading down to the jersey shore. calm conditions here right now but mobile6 will be deployed in some of those shore communities that are looking out for some flooding also some beach erosion and high winds so stay tuned as mobile6 provides other elements of coverage to our hurricane josé story. crashing waves brought spectators to the beaches of atlantic city yesterday. the beach patrol there made 12 rescues on sunday. the beaches are opened but as bob just alluded to officials are discouraging people from going into the water. >> i think we're just immune to all of that by now. >> yeah. >> i really do. because the bad ones, maybe

we'll have big winds. >> officials are warning people in flood prone areas to be aware and take necessary precautions. >> hurricane maria is powerful category four storm but it made landfall on dominica as a cat five storm. this is what it looked like as maria began to lash martin. roosevelt skerrit said he had to be rescued himself from the storm. he posted that the island "lost all what money can buy and replace." up next, the eye could brush by americans in saint croix. that was the u.s. virgin islands. it was mostly spared from irma and then it will be on to puerto rico where the catastrophic storm is projected to make a direct strike tomorrow. evacuations have been ordered. residents are busy boarding up their homes and rationing food. of course members of our local puerto rican community here in philadelphia are very concerned for the island. they're worried about what maria will do to the island which is skirted by hurricane

irma. city officials say they're working with nonprofit tom collect cash in hopes of making donations to storm victims after maria makes her way through. >> tracking josé maria and our local weather here david. >> how about. all right, well, let's start local. we've got storm tracker6 live double scan showing that you so far the precipitation is off the coast coming in from the ocean and these are bands that we do expect to make the shore a little bit later this morning. but it doesn't look like the impact rain-wise is going to be all that much and we'll talk more about that in a moment. let's get you outside. we have sky6. there's the commodore barry bridge and we are looking at cloud cover out there and yesterday we did that manage a few sunny breaks. today it looks like we'll probably be just stuck under the clouds. your temperatures currently 72 degrees, dewpoint at 67 so fairly humid out there. that might even rise a little bit during the day. the winds right now not bad at 9 miles an hour. hurricane jose still a category one. it took a little jog toward

land but in general it's still taking that progressive track to the north and then wrapping around to the northeast as we go into the weekend degenerating to a tropical storm and then to a tropical low pressure system. the big issue today is tonight and maybe into early wednesday morning as that's when we're going to get the rain popping through and also the other issues down along the coast. we're going have a tropical storm force winds though a little farther from the coast and so we have canceled the tropical storm watch along our immediate shore line. in the waters, mariners are still going to have to be very careful. future tracker6 showing you that as we go between now and 9 o'clock a couple sprinkles come in. by noon there could be some of that rain riding along the coast, steady at times. the rest of us are dealing with just a couple sprinkles and brief showers and later tonight the storm is pushing away from us and so is the rain. obviously these rain bands not coming in as far today as it looked like they were going to yesterday and now rather than an inch and a.

had a of rain in atlantic city we're only going for about a half inch on this model. storm surge only expected to be a foot. breakers on the beach will be up to eight to 10 feet producing rip currents and beach erosion, not a good day to be in the water and your gusts down the shore could get to 30 to 35 miles per hour but they're not going to be as bad as it was looking yesterday. today's forecast 70 degrees by 8 o'clock in philadelphia. 72 by 10 o'clock. 74 by noon. and by 3 o'clock, we'll get a high of 77 degrees. still cloudy, still slightly damp. dodgers and phillies will get that game in tonight. might be a little damp with a sprinkle or a light shower but i think not a big problem. 73 for the first pitch, 71 in the ninth inning. hurricane maria showing that telltale eye of a strong hurricane as this is a major hurricane having made landfall in dominica last night and the it looks like it's going to be a category four and even a five at times as it gets close to san juan puerto rico, they're really expecting a major hit there tomorrow. you can see how it comes

through the eastern bahamas, still a category three as it starts to march past about miami's latitude and we'll have to see where that storm goes from there. there are some models suggesting that it comes up more or less in our neighborhood but then kind of juts out to see. we'll see about that. a lot can still happen. breezy and damp today, cloudy, 77. tomorrow clouds will break. 80 degrees is the high. and the afternoon looks pretty good. rosh hashanah arriving at sundown. thursday 84 and low to mid 80's on friday as autumn arrives and straight through the weekend on saturday and sunday where we expect partly sunny skies. more clouds build in on monday and monday guys there could be another round of rain on the way. i would still caution people even though things are getting a little bit better in terms of this forecast with josé to stay out of that ocean water today because it is going to be dangerous. >> will do. thanks, david. time is 4:12. a drive-by shooting leaves a chester high school student dead, two other teens injured as they were just walking home from school. >> protests and violence erupt after a vigil for a college student shot and killed by

>> ♪ >> good morning everyone. 4:15. it is tuesday, taking a live look philadelphia international airport. somewhat clear right now. >> let's go on over to karen rogers. hopefully at this hour those roads are pretty clear, too. >> yeah, this is the time where we have lots of construction crews out there but nothing major happening as you're heading out. we're still dry through the region and looking pretty good. this is cherry hill, camden county, route 70 here at kings highway where construction has been blocking the left lane. we still see the cones set out here but this should be cleared by about 6 o'clock. so you got a little longer that you'll be dealing with this. let's check the vine street expressway. it was closed overnight for construction. still closed at this hour. we see no traffic here on the vine, all the ramps are shut down. it should reopen about 5:00

a.m. this morning and then crews will return again tonight at 11:00 and shut the vine down in both directions. how about over here on the schuylkill expressway? we had construction here blocking the right lane. this is the schuylkill at gulf mills. westbound as you head towards king of prussia, they've been in the process of picking up that construction so the crews are clear here. not entirely clear on the schuylkill. they're in the process of that but watch for that construction. also eastbound between the turnpike and gladwyne, the left lane is blocked for construction there. in new castle county, lots of crews out there working all night on i-95 southbound near 202. i-95 between mlk boulevard and 295 and the ramp from 95 southbound to 295, two lanes blocked on that ramp. let's go to the commuter traffic report. looking in south jersey, we see here's route 55 looking pretty good right now. if you're coming up from deptford headed towards 42, maybe coming into the city from there, not seeing any delay. now we're scanning around the coast even though we're watching josé carefully and any impacts not seeing any coastal flooding on the roads

at this point, tam. >> thank you, karen. a chester high school sophomore was gunned down in a drive by shooting while walking around after school. two other teens were also shot and injured. "action news" reporter katherine scott is live outside of chester high school with more on the victim. good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam. police have no clear motive in this case. they believe this is a drive-by shooting. two of the victims are in stable condition, the third identified by family as 16-year-old ronald lundy succumbed to his injuries. ronald lundy was only 16 years old a sophomore, a member of the jv basketball team. family members say he was on his way home from chester high school yesterday afternoon when he was shot twice in broad daylight. >> even if somebody was to go after the person he was with you ain't got no right to shoot somebody if they had nothing to do with nothing. >> reporter: police were called out to the 1300 block of west seventh street shortly after 3:00 p.m. officers found three teens

with gunshot wounds. a 16-year-old was shot in his thigh, an 18-year-old in his rear. lundy was hit twice in his torso and was rushed to crozer chester medical center where family members waited in droves to see if he would pull through. >> good kid. he went to school. he had good grades. he played basketball. >> reporter: his cousin reggie evan coached him and his brother on their aau. he was the cousin of tyreke evans. those who knew him say there was no way he was the intended target. >> he's not a street guy. he don't -- he don't hang out. he always with his dad, ronald, sr., you always see them together. >> reporter: this is the city's 23rd homicide of the year. there were 26 in all of last year. we're live in chester, katherine scott, channel6 "action news. matt. >> thank you, katherine. protests on the campus of georgia tech turned violent. at one point authorities told

students to shelter-in-place. it happened after a vigil ended for 21-year-old scout schultz shot and killed by campus police over the week. a police officer's car was set on fire you saw there last night and three protesters were arrested. two officers were injured. now, police say they shot schultz on saturday night because he refused orders to put down a knife and instead moved towards an officer. protests continued for a fourth night in saint louis missouri. hundreds of protesters gathered outside the saint louis justice center last night. they are calling for the release of more than 50 people who were arrested during protests on sunday night. some businesses closed early last night over fears the protests would turn violent again. the unrest began on friday after a white officer was acquitted and shooting and killing a black man. >> tarps no longer cover two confederate statues in charlottesville. the statues of robert e. lee and stonewall jackson were covered in tarp after a rally

where a woman was killed after she was run over by a car. the charlottesville city council said they put the tarps up as a show of respect for that victim. a group of people against the idea of the tarps took them down. police were on hand but they did not interfere only saying that if the statues were damaged, then it would be considered an act of vandalism. >> 4:20 now. new on "action news" a bucks county banker is sentenced for stealing from the bank. >> what's more important a good night's sleep or a pay raise when it comes to your happiness? a new study has the answer. it's up next in health check. >> ♪

>> a 32-year-old driver has been arrested and charged for critically wounding a cheerleader in front of abington high school. this was back on august 23rd when 14-year-old kelly williams was struck with such force that police say she landed more than a hundred feet away. the montgomery county d.a. says williams was in the crosswalk and that 32-year-old james clark was speeding. clark was arraigned yesterday for aggravated assault by vehicle and reckless endangerment. >> new on "action news," a bucks county judge sentenced a wells fargo bank employee to

prison for stealing almost $84,000 from the bank. 40-year-old christine bait admitted to stealing from the tullytown bank and two bank atm's over a two year period. she then submitted falsified entries to try to hide the thefts. her crime led to the firing of seven coworkers. the judge sentenced bait to nine to 23 months in jail. children in northeast philadelphia met an eagles player while celebrating a big donation. beau allen visited the boys and girls club in frankford last night and tried his hand at another sport, basketball. allen was visiting as the nonprofit donated $5,000 worth of equipment to the club. >> 4:28 and we continue to track josé. up nix we'll have more live team coverage from the shore. >> atlantic city police officer is caught on camera saving a man's life. the video later on "action news." >> ♪
