this is new video coming in from mexico. the quake was centered 80 miles outside of mexico city and the search is on for survivors. right now mexico city airport the busiest in latin america has been brought to a stand still as officials expect for signs of damage. it marks 32 years since a much stronger earthquake hit the mexico city area killing roughly 5,000 people. >> it's so powerful -- i can't imagine -- last night we saw people out there surfing. we were thinking they were taking their lives in their hands. >> hurricane jose continues to make its way up the east coast. tonight that storm is churning up the sea and along the jersey shore as we look live outside now. mobile 6 is down the shore watching for jose's impact on coastal roadways at this hour. officials are keeping a close

eye on the surf and the potential for flooding and following an accuweather alert for parts of our region as the impact of hurricane jose begins to peak. >> we have live team coverage tracking the effects at the shore and we begin with cecily tynan with the latest from the national weather center. >> monica and rick hurricane jose remains a category hurricane maximum sustained winds 75 miles per hour. it's tracking 200 miles off coast and you can see the highest winds, the most intense rain right around the center of it, beginning to make the turn to the north-northeast. moving at 8 miles per hour. some showers are moving in south jersey and delaware and even a few light showers near philadelphia and the reports show you that we are dealing with gusty winds and one buoy in the mouth of the delaware bay winds sustained at 28 miles per hour and gusting up to 40 miles per hour but the most intense

part of jose is the wave action. it's really whipping up the surf wave heights impressive up to 25 feet at the center of the storm and closer to land wave heights of 11 feet and constant wave action piling up the water at the shore and that produces the tidal flooding. the next concern is the high tide cycle between 7:30 and 8:30 along the shore. the back bays one two two hours after that. and looking for moderate tidal flooding tonight and even tomorrow morning the potential for minor flooding. the coastal flooding and the beach erosion the main concern with jose. jose is a category one hurricane and we have hurricane maria a powerful cat five. 165 miles per hour winds heading toward st. croix and puerto rico. i'll have more details on this storm in the full accuweather

forecast. >> thank you. chad pradelli is tracking jose's impact for us on the shore firsthand. live in ocean city tonight. >> reporter: hey monica, impact certainly being felt in ocean city. and the rain picked up in the last 10 minutes, here on 5th street at the boardwalk, want to show you the surf. the main issue is with this storm is the high surf. the waves are powerful and peaking hundreds of yards from the shore line and you see it coming all the way here under the boardwalk. i was talking to a woman that lived here in ocean city for 20 years, she says this is the first time she saw the water come under this section of the boardwalk, i want to show you the beach erosion the second aspect with the jose impact. so far with this storm. you see that dune was extended out yesterday i would say 20 to 30 feet according to residents that were here that is washed away into the atlanta ocean.

you see the sharp cliff look there on the dubs and they are now getting washed into the atlantic ocean. not a whole lot of people on the boardwalk, take a look. a few people were coming to take pictures and for the most part not a lot of people. i was talking to people and they say they saw people out in the waves, and you see how strong it is. yesterday an adult and three children were in the waves. phonings you need to stay out of the water, that is the warning from officials. rip tides have been particularly bad this year and with this storm, the rip tides are deadly and people need to stay out of the water. it is dangerous and looks inviting but stay ashore. we'll watch the tidal flooding later this evening and more reports later on on "action news." chad pradelli, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. lets head down to north wildwood and that is where jeff is continuing the team coverage tonight. >> reporter: rick, the rain is picking up here as well.

so is the tide. take a look. we are still several hour as way from the official high tide. but within the past 30 minutes, we see this water, the waves get larger and stronger and coming and crashing over the rocks. jose is several hundreds miles out to sea and the folks in north wildwood are feeling the effects. >> it came up to here and jonah came up to here -- >> flooding is nothing new to mike newell and mike clark, they are keeping an eye on the back bay. just feet away. >> streets around the men's home flooding during high tide and is expected to be worse tonight. >> what are you expecting tonig tonight? >> i expect it to go in the house but i hope not. >> north wildwood fire department is getting ready and high water vehicles are fueling up in case of emergency. >> meanwhile onlookers gathered to watch the rough seas and high winds and crashing waves gave

residents and visitors quite a show. >> it's almost never this high. this is low tide, and it looks like full high tide. >> the waves are ridiculous and you can't walk on the beach the sand was blowing in our face. >> and the waves washed away part of the beach and this pavilion was closed for fear of collapse and the city is facing erosion and possible flooding the mayor is keeping a positive outlook. >> i'm having a hard time not moving around. i can't imagine going through a category one or two. that would be something that would be really devastating. >> reporter: back out live the winds continue to crash ashore. i have a feeling when we are back here at 6:00 tonight we probably won't be able to stand in this spot and the waves continue to get larger and closer. the mayor says he is expected two feet of water. and some of those low lying areas after tonight's high tide.

story. >> reporter: rick, the da says that the investigation is not over yet and toxicology tests are not back yet but the story told by witnesses seem to corroborate in this case and paint the picture of an accident and nothing criminal akin to the penn state case. >> the da means that after interviewing everyone that had contact with whlafayette mccray williams there is no reason to believe anything criminal occurred. >> i have no evidence of criminal conduct on the part of anyone. >> witnesses said williams was drinking through the weekend beginning on friday. and never appeared to be out of control or overly intoxicated but by saturday afternoon williams was in his dorm room and started vomiting and a fee

female student went to check on him and he vomited again. she is not paying attention and hears a loud sound. and turns around to look she sees mr. williams on the ground. >> he reportedly said he was okay and when to sleep in his bed. >> over the next 24 hours or so his teammates popped in to check on him and then williams slept through the morning and when the teammates check on him again they described him as groggy and agitated and decided to take him to a doctor and called the coach who instructed them to call 911. williams was in the backseat of a vehicle and then taken to the hospital where he died the following day. it seems the blunt force trauma occurred when he fell and the only thing the witnesses are guilty of is not knowing what is going on. >> he was saying from what i gather, get out of here i'm

kohls says some of its stores will begin accepting return items to amazon 82 stores in the chicago and los angeles areas are tabbed to pack and ship to amazon with no charge to customers this after kohls says they will sell amazon brand devices in a dozen stores no word if that will expand to kohls stores worldwide. and federal regulators accepted the plan to buy up half of rite-aid stores. walgreens gains nearly 2,000 stores in the deal. the plan is in the works for two years after walgreens tried to buy rite-aid out right in 2015, that led to the partial deal approved today. people in west philadelphia got important free health screenings today. pen medicine came together for this event.

time for the accuweather forecast. tracking jose as it continues to bear down on the jersey shore. moving northeast at 8 miles per hour. we see showers developing from jose moving inland. lets head to the weather center this is radar on jose and you see the showers reaching the i-95 corridor and not reaching the northwest suburbs as jose spins up the coast 200 miles off the east coast. so the rain showers are ending around midnight as jose

continues to push to the northeast and once it is out of here we are getting set for summer like temperatures, actually right through the weekend, our first weekend of fall, jose is weakening offshore and it will kind of sit and meander there for days. if you head to the jersey shore and delaware bays this weekend, the rip currents and high surf continues through the weekend. and with the temperatures you may want to head to the with each. double scan live radar showing now we have showers moving from jose and hammonton and glassboro and pinwheeling in from the north and east off the atlantic and that is piling up the waters. temperatures you see depends where you are. allentown and reading they say jose it's not affecting us? sunshine and temperatures in the 80s and mixture of sun and clouds and right along the shore with the clouds and showers, quite a bit cooler with temperatures in the upper 60s. you see satellite and radar here is the center of the storm again pushing to the northeast holding

on to the category one status with maximum sustained wins of 75 miles per hour. and moving into cooler water as we head through the week and that means it will continue to weaken and the time we are concerned about for high tide is the tide cycle. moderate tides in atlantic city but tomorrow morning and even tomorrow evening we'll still see some coastal flooding but it should be on the minor side. once we get rid of jose temperatures begin to warm. we have a little bit of an upper level disturbance moving through tomorrow. so it won't be completely bright and sunny, 11:0078 degrees and temperatures in the low 80s in the afternoon. the big story in the atlantic is hurricane maria. maximum sustained winds up to 165 miles per hour. a cat five bearing down on the u.s. virgin islands, st. croix likely the next target for maria with a hurricane force winds and

then it looks like it make a direct hit in puerto rico heading to the turks and caicos islands after of that and hopefully after that out to sea. the five-day at 5:00, a mixture of clouds and sunshine and warm day 84 degrees and thursday 86 and fall arrives and it's warm. 84 degrees and look at the weekend 86 on saturday, and sunday up to 90 degrees and let you know if things cool off in the seven-day forecast. >> thank you cecily. quick break and more news stay with us.

is so far off. it's overwhelming. >> along for the ride is occasional bands of rain and significant wind. at the peak we clocked 25 to 25 miles per hour gusting to 30 many shore birds stayed out of the sky and huskering down into the wind and that wind is not a threat to property. and some minor back bay flooding occurred and that is expecting to peak during high tide tonight. and people ventured out and took in the wave action firsthand. >> it's magnificent and a little scary today. >> it's amazing to watch. i think -- >> from a safe distance. >> yes. you don't see this too often. >> a force we have no control over, it doesn't discriminate and looks like an angry sea. and it's awesome. >> reporter: awesome as in the case of stunning and brecht taking and frankly fear some.

on the free 6 abc app for your mobile device. meantime communities in texas and florida face a long road ahead as they continue to piece together their lives after hurricanes harvey and irma. and volunteers that volunteered their time return home. sara bloomquist is here now with that part of the story tonight. >> they were near for nearly a month. pennsylvania task for one spent the days helping in the after knowledge and both harvey and irma. helping families in both texas and florida dealing with destruction and home now with their own families and ready to go again at a moments notice. >> this afternoon a caravan came rolling into pennsylvania's center northeast philadelphia. one by one 19 members of pennsylvania's task force one stepped off the buses. >> back into the arms of loved ones waiting to greet them.

>> the task force made up of firefighters and first responders departed on august 27th they headed to the houston area. and rescuing people that might be trapped and from there they moved on to the florida keys to help the victims of hurricane irma. they did water rescues of and searches in texas and irma structural assessment and things like that. got down as far as the upper keys. >> we helped the residents and people of florida and it did exactly what fema set forth to go out and do our job and help out everybody that needed help. >> my role of technical information and mapping and other things, we were everywhere from houston to the florida keys. helping everybody on the way. >> it was an unpress denned deployment.

two hurricanes in rapid succession, members a they are glad to help but ready for hurricane season to end and happy to be home. >> great to see the family, we have missed each other. >> i'm going to have a beer. 23 days without a beer, my first line of activities. >> i think he deserves it. the team members get 48 hours to rest and right back in the fema rotation, some team members are already in position in puerto rico ahead of hurricane maria. the group that came home today could join them there or even somewhere else given the way this hurricane season is going. republicans are working quickly to try to repeal and replace obama care. they have a few days to do it because the reconciliation process expires at the end of this month. that allows republicans to pass a major policy proposal with minimum number of votes.

a sixth grader in new hampshire is helping houston, texas recover from hurricane harvey. first graders brooklyn murray decided to collect books for kids that lost everything. she started with books she already ready and word got out at school and social media kicked in and the number keeps on growing. >> books are a way to bring back a little normalcy to their lives. >> brooklyn's mother has connected with a houston elementary school and that is where most of the books will go. >> good for her. adorable. nice. time to check the accuweather forecast not so nice for folks

in the storm's path. >> especially at the shore or in a flood proned area. as we look at the weather center here dealing with showers that have rotated through the city in the last 20 to 30 minutes. starting to clear up again as that particular shower sinking south of the city. again, some of those bands on the western edge of jose have made it as far west as philadelphia. we look at stormtracker 6 live double scan northern and west of the city we see a decent amount of sunshine and more clouds now and we were absent of any rain showers once you broke out of philadelphia county and delaware county. but you see some drifting showers into chester and now wilmington is next hit by the quick hitting shower and right around route 70 and medford lakes and the atlantic city expressway and light rain that continues to rotate from the northeast to the south and west again around jose and as the showers progress through, it

kicks up the winds just a little bit. not all that strong. as we look at temperatures, big difference from the southeast to the north and west. by almost 20 degrees because of the cloud cover and not enough rain in the 60s and muggy and 75 in the middle ground in philadelphia and low 80s to the north and west and mid-80s with a lot of sun in the areas. as the showers pass through they kind of bring down some winds and it's nothing to worry about whatsoever but get a gust from 24 to 25 miles per hour as the showers pass through, 26 right now in cape may that just popped up but areas not seeing much in the way of heavy rain. no reported wind gusts as they are not strong enough. satellite and radar, still hurricane jose, winds sustained at 75 miles per hour. moving to the northeast away from the coastline by more than 200 miles and you see that dry air to the north and west. we are still dealing with the

large breakers of 8 to 10 feet hitting the jersey shore carving into the sand because of the northeasterly direction of the wind paralleling our coastline and the next round of high tide 7:30 to 8:30 on the ocean side later in the back bays creating flooding higher than what we saw early on this morning. tomorrow summer like and muggy with sunshine and clouds and the clouds may fight the sun at times and a nice day with temperatures topping off at 84 degrees, hurricane maria. winds sustained 165, and the pressure is dropping as the storm is strengthening heading toward st. croix and st. thomas and san juan puerto rico. into the night as a catastrophic storm and category four near turks and caicos and weaken to a two as it squeezes between the

east coast and bermuda. still up in the air what happens to maria and if it reacts to the remnant low of jose off the coast. as we go into the first weekend of fall it's not going to feel fall like at all. the humidity is up the next few days and the human drops friday into the weekend and temperatures running away above arm and in fact 90 come sunday with autumn heat and stay ago above normal into the beginning of next week. so our weather here can't complain about it. unless you want fall we'll continue to watch maria and what happens with jose. >> we are lucky overall. >> we are. much more when we come right back.
