are raising money to help those impacted by hurricane maria and a massive earthquake in mexico. the big story on "action news" is the intense rescuests underway in mexico following that deadly earthquake, among those trapped in the debris and believed to be alive is a 12-year-old school girl. at least 245 people were killed in the quake. >> reporter: over 50 people have been rescued since that earthquake and some of those rescue efforts focused on two schools that collapsed during the quake and now on a young girl still trapped in the rubble who is a symbol of hope. desperate rescue efforts are a race against time in mexico city. >> we don't know yet. probably there are people there. rescuers tunnelling closer to the 12-year-old girl buried in

debris and possibly two classmates trapped with her. >> rescue teams made contact with her. they talked to her. >> rescuers have given her water and oxygen but the scene is still chaotic. hundreds of crews, including wellers and carpenters and medics swarming the size. the massive 7.1 earthquake leveling the school. crews are listening for signs of life using infrared cameras to scan where 20 children and four teachers died. but some rescued. kids plucked from the debris. >> dusty but alive. >> dusty but alive where 40 buildings are collapsed and half the city is without power. >> the rescuests are more a race against time because kids are more susacceptable to hypothermerthermi

hyperthermia. kids trapped in the school may only have hours left to live. channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. well, mexico faces the aftermath of one natural disaster the caribbean is being hit with another. hurricane maria. maria caused at least 10 deaths across the caribbean and headed towards the turks and caicos after leaving behind massive destruction in puerto rico. hurricane maria slammed into the island nation as a category four storm knocking out power to the entire island. >> puerto rico was absolutely obliterated. puerto rico got hit with behinds, that they have never seen winds like this anywhere. >> president trump says he plans to visit puerto rico, and their airport announced they plan to resume operations as soon as tomorrow. >> the devastation from both hurricane maria and mexico entired people in our area to step up and help.

several organization and community groups are holding events and raising money to help with relief efforts for the natural disasters. gray hall is at one event he spoke with those trying to make a difference. >> reporter: we can tell you there is an event scheduled for 1:00 at the west kensington ministry and they will disgust the natural disasters and let church members know how they can help out and people are stepping up and opening up their hearts. >> we have seen the heart breaking images in port week after the area was slammed by hurricane maria. and many are in the dark and unable to communicate with the outside world and then the devastation in mexico after it was hit by a massive 7.1 earthquake that killed hundreds. those areas are far away but the pain, prayers and the longing to help can be found in our backyards. many the hispanic and latino communities have families in the impacted areas and looking for

ways to help. >> it's overwhelming to see everything. it's devastating. >> i saw the videos. my cousin was in the house when it all started. >> the mexican student association at penn state is helping in the aftermath of the earthquake that killed both young and old. students have already raised $20,000. a local at lino organization is collected funds through its website and "action news" learned that organizers of this weekend's annual puerto rican day activities this affair is not just a celebration but used to raise much needed funds and a social media campaign will help to raise money along with volunteers walking the parade route to collect donations. >> we'll go out and try to do our best and we are doing it for them. >> all right back out live this event at west kensington ministry starts at 1:00 this

afternoon an cross the area as people continue to see the need they continue to open up their wallet. gray hall, channel 6 "action news." >> gray, thank you. >> people on the u.s. main land are keeping an eye on hurricane maria as it pummels the main land and hurricane jose continues to cause problems off the coast. david murphy is in the weather center tracking all of this activity. >> jose a tropical storm weakening a bit off our coast and the circulation is farther away from the coast as yesterday and not as much cloud but sunshine in play. but a sweep of clouds for a time this morning. the winds have died down it's a drop. and the movement is stationary now than may be an indication that the storm is stalling and getting ready to drift back to the east. the maximum wind gusts are 60

miles per hour. not a major issue for us in terms of sky cover or any sort of precipitation. and the weather in fact over the beach should remain nice over the several several days over the weekend. and bad at the beach if you try to get in the water, rip currents and rough surf probably through the weekend. and we have to worry about maria because it looks like that storm is making a run up the coast. what jose is doing for us now is causing that issue with heavy surf and rip currents and a high risk today. swimmers if you don't have lifeguards use extreme caution maybe go in to your ankles but if you have a lifeguard swim near the guard and make sure they keep you safe. that is a continued problem through the weekend. hurricane maria the eye of the storm spinning to the north of the dominican republic and heading in the direction of the turks and caicos and of course

home after a dangerous forest fire raged out of control and more than 9800 acres are scorched so far. and people are forced from their homes on the island and the island is a popular destination for tourists. an investigation is now underway in oklahoma city where a deaf man was shot by police. 35-year-old magnus sanchez was holding a metal knife approaching the officers, one shot him with a gun and the other with a taser. witnesses were yell, quote, he can't hear you before the officers fired. but officers did not hear what they were yelling due to tunnel vision. sanchez died at the scene. and robert mueller's team is seeking documents from the white house. he is looking for information related to michael flynn's stint at national security adviser and about the meeting with the

weather cumulous clouds, but overalmostly sunny conditions and 84 degrees is your current temperature. the dew point at 63 and just a little bit humid not bad. winds from the north-northeast not as blustery at 8 miles per hour. and the ocean temperature is 72. allentown 83 degrees 83 in reading and up over 80 in lancaster and 84 in philadelphia and wilmington and down the shore just 78 in cape may and inland at a.c. airport 83 degrees. everybody is nice and warm. satellite shows you that jose has shifted a little farther out to sea today. there say possibility that every now and then a band of clouds tries to get through but so far so good. after an initial cloudy start. tropical storm jose has diminished in strength, now down

to 60 and in general are you looking at this storm continuing to weaken and meandering off the coast by sunday it will be starting to push away from us and that is actually good news because maria will eventually come up the coast the second storms that come along want to migrate toward low pressure and it would tend to bring maria off the coast. and that is one theory we are work on. even though it's beautiful on the beach itself we are look agent continued rough surf and dangerous rip currents in the water. and a high risk of rip currents today and watch out for eroded dunes. there may be more action along the ocean front depending on where maria goes exactly. bright overall with a high on the beach of 75. and lie hive sunny and warm and 86 there and philadelphia 86 and mostly sunny skies and not as windy today as yesterday.

overnight tonight mainly clear and comfortable and 66 and light winds once again. and tomorrow is also looking like a warm one to bring in autumn. hurricane maria is a hurricane and wide and well pronounced. this one is passing by the northern shore of the dominican republic and looking at storm surge along the northern side of that island. turks and caicos looks like they are in line for this storm with the 115 miles per hour winds and probably stronger than that over the next couple of days. but it looks like this storm will curve away a little bit from the turks and caicos, minimizing the impact and they are bat onning for possible problems after that we go to a two and eventually a one around tuesday morning off the coast of north carolina and virginia. the latest tracks though you can clearly see are suggesting the cone of possibility is off our coast and not coming in our direction, things could change

but looking better for us, but still looking at rip currents and rough ocean. 86 degrees and mostly sunny and warm and autumn arrives at 4:02 tomorrow afternoon. and for the weekend saturday and 86 and 89 for the eagles home opener, and lots of sunshine there and baseball weather with the phillies out of town someplace and monday the humidity starts to tic up and we get close to 90 and feeling like summer tuesday and wednesday with highs of 85 and 83 and both of those days i'm thinking thunderstorms are possible. >> summer weather holding on thanks david. >> a michigan father is putting all other fathers to shame with the epic play house he build his daughter. two stories high crown molding and cherry wood and a lost and included an attached rock wall and slide. and he created this for his 5-year-old daughter and 1-year-old daughter and much of
