>> this as maria once again gained strength as it churns to the north. we have live team coverage and cecily tynan has the latest word from the hurricane center but we begin with elizabeth live in new york tracking the damage in puerto rico. >> reporter: in puerto rico the governor says they are still not in the clear and he is still asking families to stay in their homes for their safety but today some residents ventured out to try to get their life back. puerto rico beginning the process of cleaning up from hurricane maria. a daunting task with in streets left impassable and neighborhoods submerged as rain drop 30 inches. and the governor heading out himself with the national guard rescuing families including children from flooded homes. the storm so destructive the

entire island of puerto rico is still without power. >> so puerto rico is in very, very tough shape. their electrical grid is destroyed and it wasn't in good shape to start off with. >> president trump is promising puerto rico federal funding to help with recovery as the prime minister of dominica the caribbean island made an emotional plea for help. >> if anybody is listening to me helicopter services is critical to get the supplies to people. >> the damage assessment is continuing but the prime minister says the situation there is dire. there is no electricity and some villages are only accessible by boat or helicopter. >> and as you can imagine authorities across the caribbean say that rebuilding first from hurricane irma and now maria will take months if not longer.

and president trump says that in addition to government aid he will personally visit puerto rico. i'm elizabeth herr channel 6 "action news." >> now cecily tynan is live at the big board with the latest on the track of maria. >> hi rick, maria is back over the atlantic and since it is, it is getting stronger. back up to a category three hurricane, the outer bands are lashing out at the turks and caicos islands and the north coast of the dominican republic and northeast puerto rico is getting more rain. the eye expanded and is 30 miles across and moving northwest at 9 miles per hour. 95 miles east-northeast of grand turk but looks to take a turn up to the north. what that means the actual center of the storm should pass east of the turks and caicos islands and east of the bahamas and starts to curve to the northeast. looks like the remnants of jose cause a weakness and ridge of

high pressure and that is good news for the southeast coast of the main land u.s. and maria likely remaining offshore passing between cape hatteras and bermuda and we could be in a heat wave here i'll talk about that in the accuweather forecast. >> thank you. maria and jose continue to impact the jersey shore. and the u.s. army corps of engineers says that sandy recovery efforts. have been hampered by the storms, work to widen beaches and dunes in mantoloking was suppose to start in the past week and instead work there and other nearby shore towns will begin early next month. and in florida officials say that 10 residents at a fort lauderdale nursing home have now died after the hurricane irma pummeled the sunshine state. the air conditioning stopped working after the storm hit and workers brought in portable units but not enough to cool down the building to a safe level. police say that a criminal investigation is still underway.

now to new developments out of mexico after the deadly 7.1 magnitude earthquake there. tonight the search and rescue efforts continue. that include a school that collapsed in mexico city 80 miles from the epicenter of the quake. the mexican navy thought there could be a girl trapped inside and the officials tell the associated press there is evident that someone is alive in the rubble but believed to be a school worker. >> both the earthquake in mexico and the devastation in the caribbean has inspired groups in philadelphia to help out. and students with the mexican student association have raised over $30,000 to help those earthquake victims. the reason why it's money based we can't be there and pick up what is left on the streets but the money can go to medicine and things that are needed. >> others are collecting funds to help those collected by

recent storms that ripped through the caribbean and funds are collects online and it's the annual puerto rican day festivities will be used for fundraising efforts as well. >> now at 5:00 a warning for residents in one bucks county neighborhood after a man fell victim to a burglary scheme. john rawlins live for us in perkasie with the full story on this one. >> reporter: the thinking is the bad guys they are looking for are looking for their targets wherever they can find them. >> tuesday, 78-year-old bob was at his house when a woman popped up claiming she was with a tree service and going around the properties and looking to get trees and give estimates. she asked if bob was alone. >> and asked if i was married and was anybody else home. >> in a flirting manner gave the focus to the trees behind the

property and more than 20 minutes the talk was about trees he didn't own. and we have trees that need to be trimmed and we don't know. the woman's accomplice entered through the front door and ransacked bob's office taking envelopes including crash for christmas gifts. >> give so much money to my kids a year and put it away every month when i get my pension check and have that in the back of my filing cabinet envelope and it's late in the year and it has pretty much money. >> detective says that what occurred was a classic distraction burglary, good at what they do, they saw a single elderly resident in his driveway an approached him. >> the young lady in case described as a hispanic female 35 years old and wearing what he says was a floresent green hat and shirt.

tic and for some people it could be deadly. >> it's overwhelming. >> christina is still in shock, her fun loving husband, jeff died nearly two months ago from an infection spread by a deer tic. >> it's a long hard road ahead. we had so much to do, he was only 50. in late july jeff came down with a fever and sweating and fatigue and it took several days to make the diagnosis. they didn't treat jeff but specializes in infectious diseases and that is tran mitted by the same tic as lyme disease. and many people infected won't have symptoms but others -- >> the problem is that the disease can get severe if the person doesn't have a normal immune system. that includes people on

chemotherapy. transplant and elderly and anyone without a spleen and jeff had his spleen removed as a child but never caused problems. >> in 26 years he was sick maybe twice. and she and their children nicole and max are hoping to raise awareness about the disease. it's considered reportable and tracked by many state health departments including new jersey and delaware but not pennsylvania. dr. fishman says it's rare in the state. >> we see more and more lyme disease in the state so we may start to see an increase. >> we live across the street from a state park and i want people to know there is other harmful diseases carried by tics and not just lyme disease. >> wear insent repellant and deet and check your body for

the dow jones reversed a week long trend today at the closing bell for the first time in 10 days the dow finished in the red. the dow dropped 53 points be the nasdaq lost 33 and it's s&p down nearly 8 points, the historic building is now home to a company that helps businesses keep up in the changing world having technology. mayor eric jackson helped leaders cut the ribbon on their new headquarters earlier today. the company is using space in trenton new intervention hub on west state street and they are promoting startups in that city.

turning now to the forecast we are talking warm or hot. >> officially the last day of summer but continue on the seven-day forecast. lets head to the weather center and take a live look as we approach the last sunset of summer and a lot of high clouds out there compliments of jose still spinning off the coast and it is pulling back a lots of those crystal clouds 20,000 feet up in the atmosphere. and if they are thin enough here this evening. they can display beautiful colors in the sky. tomorrow we say hello to fall the autumnal equinox. that is when it officially arrives and we go through the next three months and through the fall season, our normal high is dropping 33 degrees. the amount of daylight drops

2:50. and the average frost is around halloween and the first snow of the season typically falls in the city around december 15th. but we are not talking snow or frost and not talking fall we are talking summer. 87 now stretching from reading and allentown and 80 in dover and sea breeze at the shore temperatures in the upper 70s. you see the clouds that continue to spin around tropical storm jose and even rain bands effecting eastern parts of massachusetts and the islands of nantucket and cape cod. but for us some fringe clouds and those stick around at times overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow. >> and tonight it's warm and not too bad. 60 to 67 and not overly humid and the humidity at least will stay down through the day tomorrow.

as we look at future tracker 6 temperatures, mid-80s for us but see the 90s building and summer taking over the eastern half of the country and that continues into saturday with the temperatures going to 86 and we go beyond what on sunday into early next week. as we look at the upper level patterns of the atmosphere this is what steers our weather systems and we talk about maria. two areas of high pressure and weakness between the highs, that is where maria will likely go between the highs as the ridge builds it acts as a shield. we think at this point maria will curve out to sea at bermuda and the east coast sparing anymore landfalls. as we look at the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast the high builds and protects us it bakes us for the next seven days, heat wave sunday, monday into tuesday with record tying warmth likely with low 90s for highs and going into the beginning and middle of next
