comments denouncing players who take a knee during the national anthem. athletes, coaches and team owners link arms in a show of solidarity against mr. trump's statements. some took a knee while other teams didn't even take to the field until after the national anthem was performed. sunday night, the big story on action news is the convergence of sports and politics in the national football league. >> it was an unprecedented show of solidarity as the nfl took a stand and sent a message to the president. >> please join us in singing the national anthem. the eagles joined other teams to send a message to president trump. at lincoln financial field, players linked arms. owner jeffrey lurie joined them. >> we're going to be united and the owner was down there as well. says a lot about him and the change he's trying to create in the city. >> wide receiver smith stood just mind him with malcolm

jenkins, fists raised. chris long was at their side. he's from virginia. >> you have to support them. you might not agree 100%. i tend to agree with a lot of what's being protested. but i think it was a good day to show solidarity. >> reporter: the controversy boiled over on friday after president trump said this about players who take a knee to protest racial and social injustice. >> wouldn't you love to see one of those nfl owners when somebody disrespects the flag to get that son of a [ bleep ] off the field. he's fired. he's fired! >> honestly, it was no different than a troll on, you know, social media that i have been dealing with for a whole year. so that same rhetoric is what i hear on a daily basis. >> reporter: in stadiums elsewhere, teams stayed in the locker room during the anthem.

one exception, steelers left tackle, a former army ranger and philadelphia eagle. he stood outside the tunnel at soldier field, hand over his heart. the president was asked if he was inflaming racial tensions. >> i never said anything about race. this has nothing to do with race or anything else. this has to do with respect for our country and respect for our flag. today's demonstrations were most visible on the field, but off the field, they had their say. >> bob brooks has that part of the story. >> i hate you! >> american made! >> we love you. >> reporter: as you can see and hear, it wasn't just about playing a football game outside the link this morning. groups marching and those who didn't like it shouting back and forth. here's what it was, a group marching around tailgates, supporting their right to kneel. >> if i don't stand, who will? everybody should be standing for

democracy. >> reporter: and many fans supported them. >> they have gone through the journey. >> takes away from a human's right. this is the land of the free. we can protest whatever we want to protest. we have a freedom to do that. >> reporter: but there's a large contingent siding with president trump. >> if you don't like this country, find another one. >> reporter: for one woman from blue bell, she said it's a slap in the face to all the military men and women. >> it's the united states of america and i'm proud to be here and i think you should stand for the national anthem. that's what we fight for. >> reporter: minus a few heated exchanges between the protestors and those who didn't want them there, it was peaceful. the philadelphia police department was prepared and kept things in order. reporting at the link, bob brooks, action news. amid the protest and discussion, there was an amazing game played at the link today. >> amazing, absolutely. there's the guy who has been on the team less than two weeks and the eagles pulled off a big win

to remember this one for a long time. >> put it in the scrapbook. >> to say the least. >> yeah. >> moving on to the accuweather forecast. how about some summer heat a few days into fall and it's not over just yet. meteorologist melissa mcgee is here with the first check of the accuweather forecast. melissa. >> yeah, walter, it was unseasonably warm for the first week of fall. and mother nature not done with summer just yet. on friday, high of 83. yesterday's high, 88. and today it was hot in philadelphia with a high temperature of 92. typically we should be close to about 75 for daytime high. we were well above that today. it wasn't just in philadelphia, but all across the mid atlantic region, numbers were above average. 90 for buffalo and pittsburgh. 91 the high temperature in new york city. and 92 degrees was the high down to the south and west in washington, d.c. satellite 6 with action radar, high pressure dominating the region. although a few more clouds are moving into the virginias and

the carolinas. but as we look at the weather headlines, it's warm and humid for the start of the workweek tomorrow. temperatures still a good 10-15 degrees above average. but we are tracking rough surf and rip currents as a result of hurricane maria. the latest on that with the full and exclusive accuweather forecast. back over your way, sarah. >> all right, melissa, thank you. terrifying moments in montgomery county. one neighborhood this evening when a pilot lost control and crashed, narrowly missing a house. trish hartman is live from the scene in woodpane township with more. trish. >> reporter: sarah, right in front of the house on meade road where this happened. you can see pieces of the plane scatteredded across the lawn. the plane is registered to a maryland man and classified as experimental and listed as amateur-built. no word tonight on the pilot's condition. but he got help from some quick-thinking neighbor who is rushed to cut him from the

plane. >> and i opened up the door. and saw people running down the street and then someone said, oh, my god, there's a plane crash. >> reporter: it was just after 5 p.m. when police say the small, single engine plane crashed dangerously close to this house on meade road in woodpane township. >> there was one person in the airplane -- the pilot. he was injured and taken to the hospital -- flown down to the hospital in philadelphia. >> reporter: douglas lives across the street and in his backyard when he says he heard the small plane overhead stuttering and flying low. >> too close to the house. and no way he was clearing the trees. i heard the crash and ran out front. >> reporter: they frantically senned for the pilot and found him with a gurgling sound from the bushes. >> brian noticed there was a strap around his neck. brian called for scissors. we elevated to get the pressure off his neck because he was not breathes and so we could get the

strap cut off. >> reporter: that's when he said the pilot started gasping and the paramedics arrived. first responders at the scene. the pilot took off from wing's field, about a mile from the crash site. neighbors say it's unusual, but alarming. >> planes four, five, six -- ten a day. it's nice to see the planes go down across the field right there. but this is a reality wakeup check. it's kind of scary. >> reporter: now, ntsb officials are due out here tomorrow to investigate what happened. in the meantime, authorities will be out here overnight to make sure the scene isn't disturbed. live, trish hartman, channel 6 action news. >> thank you. much more to come on action news. a frightening experience for a pair of police officers targeted by a gunman in philadelphia. action news reporter annie mccormack is live with a preview. annie. >> reporter: and walter,

philadelphia police are looking for the driver who sideswiped a police captain during today's puerto rican day festivities. they were riding and hit the captain. officers pursued the drive who went the wrong way on 95 before escaping over the ben franklin bridge into new jersey. the police captain was not injured and remained on the job. >> tonight, hearing the 911 calls as a gunman allegedly targeted two philadelphia police officers on a street. annie mccormack is live at

police headquarters with the details. annie. >> reporter: and sarah, that's right. tonight philadelphia police are looking for two men. they believe at least one of them opened fire on two police officers. one of those officers did fire back. >> assist for officers. >> reporter: the call for help over police radio. two 22nd district officers faced fire after reports of a stolen cell phone. the thief offered to sell back the phone. two men approached the officers, at least one armed. >> you have shots fired at police? >> affirmative, sir. >> reporter: according to the police report, moments before the officers heard gunfire, one of the officers saw a red laser dot on his shirt. the officer reported it was indicative of a firearm with an attached laser being pointed at him. one of the officers hit the ground and fired six rounds in the direction of the gunman who

fled west on york street. officers recovered a magazine clip in a nearby driveway. there was no evidence at the scene that the assailants were hit. police officers were not injured. and police have also been checking area hospitals for any gunshot victims, but haven't heard of any at this time. they're looking for any information from the public. they also say the victim of the theft did remain at the scene. if you have any information at this point they only have a vague description. you can call 215-686-tips. reporting live outside of philadelphia police headquarters, annie mccormack, channel 6 action news p thank you. a quiet sunday morning in tennessee ended with a gunman on a deadly rampage. the man wearing a mask killed one woman in the parking lot and went to the pulpit. he opened fire and juried seven others. he was identified as emmanuel sampson. he was stopped by a church usher who ended the carnage.

the motif is unknown and he had no known connection to the congregation. >> developing news from washington. president trump issued a new order banning almost overtravel from iran, somalia, chad and north korea will be indefinitely banned from entering the united states. calling for iraq and venezuelan citizens to face heightened security. the supreme court is set to hear arguments on the original travel ban next month. the puerto rican community in philadelphia is working to get aid to the island destroyed by hurricane maria. at north marshall and west indiana, they are prepping for delivery. organizers say they have several truckloads of items but need help to get everything shipped to puerto rico. a woman from allentown trapped on dominica during hurricane maria has returned

home. she moved to the island two weeks before the hurricane to begin her studies in had medical school. she said the storm lasted eight hours and she took is shelter ia bathroom. cell phone service was knocked out and she wasn't able to contact her family for days. she plans to return to school, but admits she has no idea when that will happen. >> nice to see her home. still to come, a hot start to the workweek. >> we have the exclusive accuweather seven day forecast when action news comes right back.

philadelphia on this sunday night. sky 6 live in hd at the ben franklin bridge. and quiet conditions across all of the delaware and lehigh valleys. dew point numbers in the fall season. we're talking about it. dew point numbers in the upper 60s. notice the humidity in the air. in fact, look at the trend over the next four days. dew point numbers tomorrow will be relatively high. on tuesday and wednesday, the temperatures drop a little bit. but the humidity stays up. and then finally by thursday we get a bit of a break across much of the delaware and lehigh valleys. the highs today well above average. 92 the high in philadelphia. 17 degrees above average today. right now in philadelphia, it's 74. that's 1 degree shy of the typical high for this time of year. 66 in the poconos, 74 for allentown, reading and lancaster in cape may, 68. action radar, clear and quiet across much of new england across the mid atlantic region. a few more high, thin clouds

moving into the virginias and carolinas because of money maria that is starting to weaken. but we are tracking the clouds building offer to the north. mostly clear and quiet for the rest of tonight. warm and muggy. drop down to 66 in the suburbs and 70 in philadelphia for the overnight low. future tracker 6, 6:00 in the morning, a mild start to the day. most locations in the middle and upper 60s. and by lunchtime tomorrow, already in the upper 80s in philadelphia. 79 in the poconos. wildwood, 77, and in tom's river, in at 82. we have a tropical storm watch for the outer banks of north carolina because of hurricane maria. there is a big concern with some of those tropical storm-force winds affecting north carolina. but maria right now has been downgraded to a category 1 hurricane. winds right now at 90 miles per hour. it is starting to find some cooler air to the north because of jose. it churned up the seas in advance of maria. so we're starting to get that

upwelling that's taking place. so the winds are moving to the north at 8 miles per hour. and this will continue to move to the north, but by wednesday, it moves out to sea and out along the atlantic. but some of those tropical storm-force winds could affect the carolinas -- at least the outer banks -- and that's why this watch has been posted. for our region, rough surf and rip currents are a concern. warm and humid. 89 for the high temperature tomorrow. humid and not as warm on tuesday. 84. warm on wednesday with an isolated shower possible, otherwise a high temperature of 84. turning less humid by thursday. in at 83. refreshing by friday. that feels better. in at 75. sunny and cooler into next weekend with high temperatures in the lower 70 deletess, guys. a little bit for you. >> a little bit for everybody. all right. thank you. >> thanks, melissa. >> sports is next on action news >> today's home hoper at the link will go down in eagles history. the amazing last second win
