buttons in their games. we're going to check out this little girl baffled by this outdated technology wondering why that gameboy isn't a touch screen. it is a mystery on this monday, september 25th. from abc news, this is "world neworld news now. >> wait until we give her a cassette player. let's start with the controversy and backlash growing at stadiums across the country, sparked of course by the president's criticism of football players. >> many stayed seated, took a knee, or locked arms in a show of solidarity. the protests started last year in opposition to police brutality and racial injustice. but president trump says his comments have nothing to do with race. >> last night, the nfl aired a commercial called "inside these

lines", depicting the league as a unifying force. it was a commercial they aired during the super bowl but decide last night would be fitting. here's abc's mary bruce. >> reporter: on this football sunday. ♪ oh, say can you see >> reporter: the nfl is sending a pmessage to president trump from detroit to buffalo and all the way to london at anthem plays the chorus of opposition on the field is growing. arms linked, fists raised. the national anthem at ford field ending with this moment. ♪ brave >> reporter: the patriots tom brady shoulder to shoulder with his teammates. in chicago, all but one of the steelers declined to take the field. the lone football player standing. and the titans and seahawks

sitting out the anthem all together. it started with this jab and crude language from the president on friday, taking on football players like colin kaepernick who kneel during the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice. >> wouldn't you love to see one of these nfl owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say get that son of a [ bleep ] off the field receiight now? he's fired. >> reporter: the president doubling down. >> they're making a lot of money. i'm not begrudging anything. i'm just saying they have to respect our flag and have to respect our country. >> reporter: and insists this has nothing to do with race. >> this has nothing to do with race or anything else. this has to do with respect for our country. >> reporter: on twitter a flurry of comments, if nfl fans refuse to go to games until players stop disrespecting other flag and country, you will see change take place faes. fire or suspend. but the nfl is backing its

players. in an unusually strong rebuke, the commissioner says divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the nfl, our great game and all of our players. now 66% of americans say he is doing more to divide the country than unite it. now the president says he did get a chance to watch some of these games, but he says what he saw was tremendous solidarity for our country and our flag. and on twitter, he add standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable. mary bruce, abc news, landover, maryland. the president has been a unifying sore for many. there were maybe ten players who took part in the protests by kneeling, this weekend you had more than 200. there will be another opportunity when arizona plays dallas. >> it increased the issue more so. but it's not just football having issues with the

president. the golden state warriors were supposed to be invited to the white house. steph curry made comments about how he might not go, same with kevin durant. the president tweeted they're no longer invited. >> the entire team said they're not going to go. and other teams have said they're not going to go as well. mens basketball champions. >> the issue is now in the spotlight, like it or not. so far those protests have not spread to the world of racing but some have made it clear it won't be tolerated. >> richard petty was among those siding with president trump saying he would fire for any driver who did not stand for the national anthem and suggested anyone protesting in that way does not belong in the country. >> and president trump meanwhile has announced a new travel ban. last night he tweeted making america safe is my number one priority. we will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet.

the new travel restrictions impact those from chad, iran, libya, north korea, somalia, syria, yemen and venezuela. some of those countries face a full ban. the rules are less severe for others. but some critics say despite the addition of non-muslim countries it still impacts muslims. the through restrictions take effect mid-october. the u.s. and north korea teetering toward confrontation. over the weekend. b-1 bombers and f-15 fighters took off under cover of darkness flying closer to the demilitarized zone than in decades. the president's use of rocket man in reference to kim jong un only makes a north korean attack on the u.s. more inevitable. in response, president trump tweeted just heard foreign minister of north korea speaking at u.n. if he echoes thoughts of little

rocket man they won't be around much longer. angela merkel has won a future term in office. but her party had one of the weakest showing at the polls since world war ii. that means she will have to form a governing alliance with other parties. the alternative party ran on a nationalist, anti-immigrant platform. the death toll in mexico stands at 320. it's been more than five days since the deadly magnitude 7.1 quake hit. no new human survivors have been found since wednesday, but a dog was pulled alive from the rubble just yesterday at one of two sites where rescuers are focussing efforts. and in puerto rico, a weakened dam is posing an imminent threat. families are scrambling to get away from potentially

life-threatening flooding. >> reporter: a dire situation. officials warning this dam at puerto rico could fail at any moment. >> we're encouraging folks to leave. >> reporter: aerial footage shows the spillway overflowing and ripping up everything in its path. now dam itself, more than three football fields wide, cracked and threatening to collapse. rescuers say getting to those in need is difficult. >> most of the searches that we're doing, the contacts that we're making with people who need help, we're doing it with boots on the ground. >> reporter: now describing conditions as apocalyptic. for five days millions cut off from the rest of the world without water, fuel or power. >> i know we're not going to get to everybody in time. >> reporter: the line for just $20 of gas, stretching for blocks. >> eight hours. >> yeah. >> reporter: as desperation mounts, an argument erupts

>> reporter: the first calls came in at 11:15 as the service at burnette church of christ let out. >> this is a level one mass casualty incident. >> reporter: police say the gunman killed one woman in the parking lot, then made his way inside, all the way to the pulpit. >> the guy came from the right side of the church and he was just shooting. he was just shooting. he just came right to the middle. >> reporter: minerva's dress bloody from helping the pastor, one of seven hurt along with 68-year-old linda bush. >> she was pretending to be dead so he wouldn't shoot her again. >> reporter: after several moments of horror, robert engle, a church usher confronts the shooter. >> he tackled him. he was hurt in the head. without him, i think can be worse. >> reporter: the gunman now identified by police as emmanuel sampson was shot during the struggle. police say that heroic usher saved lives. >> this church usher, an extraordinarily brave individual.

>> reporter: police are still looking into the shooter's motives. he is a former member of this church. the u.s. attorney's office has opened up a civil rights investigation into the shooting. adrian bankert, abc news, antioch, tennessee. we move on to puerto rico. there are fears that a dam protecting thousands of hurricane maria victims may fail at any moment. >> thousands are in the path of the dam and have been told to evacuate. an area that holds excess water from the dam is already overflowing. mean while, millions are affected by hurricane-related gas crises. some people waited as long as eight hours to fill up for gas. more than 120,000 gallons of diesel fuel are being sent to the island. >> and maria is expected to bring tropical force winds. to east coast of the u.s. mainland. the surge could be up to four feet. high surf and dangerous rip currents expected along the east coast throughout the week.

advisories stretch from florida all the way up to new england. and the u.s. made a show of force against north korea over the weekend. american b-1 bombers and f-15 fighters flew further north of the dmz in two decades. it came after a sharp exchange of words between president trump and a north korean official who spoke at the u.n. steve mnuchin defended the president's stand against kim jong un. >> this is not about personalities. this is not personal. this is about someone testing nuclear weapons, a hydrogen bomb that was dramatically bigger than any bomb used. this is about sending missiles over japan's airspace. these things are not going to be continued to be allowed. and the president has made that very clear. >> mnuchin said the world should unite against north korea's mom promise to test a hydrogen
