you. we begin with the defiant reaction from the nfl hitting back at president trump with the dramatic show of solidarity. players across the country got down on one knee, remained seated or stood arm in arm during the national anthem. after the president called on nfl owners to fire those who refused to stand for the anthem in protest. the oakland raiders tweeted this photo of their silent protest. nearly every member of the team took part ahead of last night's game against the redskins. abc's lana zak has more on the growing backlash. >> reporter: in games across the country, players in the nfl linked arms or took a knee in protest of racial injustice. what started with colin kaepernick has broadened to a response to president trump and these comments. >> wouldn't you love to see one of these nfl owners when somebody disrespects our flag to say get that son of a [mute] off the field right now, out, he's fired. >> reporter: this morning he is

doubling down. >> they're making a lot of money. i'm not begrudging anything. i'm just saying they have to respect our flag. >> reporter: and insists it has nothing to do with race. >> this has nothing to do with race or anything else. this has to do with respect for our country. >> reporter: the president's harsh words seemed to do more to unite the nfl. in nashville the anthem blaired over a n steelers were absent during the anthem. off the field fans in philadelphia clashed. >> i hate you! >> reporter: and even among trump supporters in the nfl, there was backlash. >> i agree with president trump. i don't think they should be protesting. >> they have the right to take a knee. they have the right to do whatever they want to do. >> reporter: patriots owner bob kraft is a well known friend of president trump's, even flying on air force one, donating $1 million to his inaugural committee. but now he says he's deeply disappointed by the tone of the comments. and hall of fame chiropractory

bradshaw says he disagrees with the protest but stands behind protestors' rights. >> if our country stands for anything, folks, it's freedom. people died for that freedom. i'm not sure if our president understands those rights. ♪ >> reporter: and it seems like the president's comments actually had the opposite of the intended effect. players who previously decided to stand for the anthem now deciding to either kneel or link arms in solidarity. and kendis and diane, this is not just limited to football. it's now spreading to major league baseball and the president continues to be engaged in a twitter feud with some of the biggest names in basketball as well. >> those names include lebron james and steph curry who are not fans of the president. you mentioned that it is spreading to other sports. thanks to lana. so far none of those protests in nascar but some owners are making it clear they won't be

tolerating those protests in their sport. >> that's right, team owner and former nascar champion richard petty was among those siding with president trump saying he would fire any driver who did not stand for the national anthem, and he suggested that no one protesting in that way doesn't belong in the country. the president's son-in-law may have violated federal rules by using a private e-mail account to communicate with white house officials. jared kushner's attorney says the senior white house adviser did use a private account to send government-related messages. federal rules require that they be part of the government record. kushner's attorney says that all those messages used from the private e-mail were forwarded to kushner's white house account where they do remain on record. senate republicans have added more than $14 billion to their health care bill in hopes of saving it. the bill is facing long odds ahead of this week's expected vote. senators rand paul and john mccain say they will vote against it. just one more declared no vote among the republican senators

would be enough to kill this legislation. and president trump has signed off on a new u.s. travel ban. they replace the controversial restrictions on mostly muslim countries which had expired. the new restrictions add chad and central africa, venezuela and north korea to the original list which included iran, libya, somalia, syria and yemen. citizens from some of those countries face a full ban. the rules are less severe for others. the new restrictions take effect in mid-october. the u.s. military put on a show of force against north korea over the weekend. b-1 bombers and f-15 fighters were flown further north of the korean demilitarized zone than any time in two decades. the president said north korea's foreign minister and kim jong-un may not be around much longer. desperation growing in parts of puerto rico devastated by hurricane maria. in one area, a weakened dam

poses an imminent threat. families are scrambling to higher ground to get away from potentially life threatening flooding if the barrier breaks. 70,000 people are being urged to evacuate. hundreds of residents and tourists packed the san juan airport. a number of flights were cancelled. puerto rico's member of congress says the destruction from hurricane maria has set the island back decades. today north carolina may feel the effects of hurricane maria now a category 2 storm. on the radar you can see the storm swirling off the southeast coast. a tropical storm watch is in effect from surf city up to the north carolina/virginia state line. there's also a storm surge effect across portions of the north carolina coast. the spaghetti models show maria gradually weakening as it pushes further north. it will be a category 1 by the

time it heads to the atlantic on thursday, late friday. now let's take a closer look at your weather. it's going to be another warm day in chicago today, nearly hitting the 90s. this after coming off a fifth straight day with some top temperatures there. the ter mom ter rose to 93 on sunday. that made it tough on runners in the city's annual half marathon. it was a warm day in western new york as well as buffalo hit a record of 90. the heat will stick around. chicago could see another record there before a cold snap comes in with more temperatures like that in minneapolis. 62 there. still ahead, some of the biggest names in music performing overnight in charlottesville. plus new details on a deadly church shooting. the gunman opening fire after sunday services. what we're learning about him and the victims.

found. overseas now german chancellor angela merkel must put together a coalition government now that she's won a fourth term in office. despite merkel's victory, her party had its worst showing in the polls since world war ii. for the first time in 50 years, a far right party will have a seat in the german parliament. that party had campaigned against merkel's immigration policies and had a strong performance. u.s. officials are worried about acid attacks here after two in as many weeks in europe. the latest happened in east london after an argument of some sort between two groups of men. officials do not believe this one or the one last week in france are related to terrorism, but u.s. homeland security warnings the use of acid may appeal to lone wolf terrorists. the aclu is questioning the use of force by police in arresting protestors at a mall near st. louis. demonstrators say an officer choked a pastor as he arrested

a first cruise ship since hurricane irma hit the florida keys two weeks ago has now arrived in key west. it carries nearly 1500 passengers and crew members on board. key west's mayor got all decked out and greeted each person personally there. he said the ship's arrival was important because of the city's heavy reliance on tourism. one person is dead and several injured after a gunman opened fire at a nashville church. >> police charge the 25-year-old suspect with one count of murder but they say it might have been more if not for the courageous actions of an usher. abc's adrienne bankert is there. >> reporter: this small tennessee church ripped apart by a gunman on a deadly shooting rampage. >> church the christ, people have been shot at that location. >> reporter: the first calls came in at 11:15 a.m. as the church let out. police say the gunman killed one woman in the parking lot, then

made his way inside all the way to the pulpit. >> the guy came from the right side of the church and he was just shooting. he was just shooting. he came right to the middle and shoot more. >> reporter: minuter va rose's dress bloody from helping the pastor, one of seven hurt along with 68-year-old linda bush. >> she was pretending to be dead so he wouldn't shoot her again. >> reporter: after several minutes of horror, 22-year-old robert engle, a church usher, confronts the shooter. >> he tackled him. without him and -- i think it can be worse. >> reporter: the gunman now identified by police as 25-year-old emanuel samson was shot during the struggle. police say that heroic usher saved lives. >> this church usher, an extraordinarily brave individual. >> reporter: police are still looking into the shooter's motives. we've learned that he is a former member of this church and we've also learned that the u.s. attorney's office has opened up a civil rights investigation into the shooting.

adrienne bankert, abc's news. it was a close call for people in a philadelphia suburb last night after a small plane narrowly missed a home in montgomery county crashing into the front yard. residents heard a gurgling sound coming from some bushes and that's where they say they discovered the pilot. >> there was a strap around his neck, one of the straps holding him into the seat. so brian called for scissors. we elevated, tried to get the pressure off his neck because he clearly wasn't breathing auntil we could get the strap cut off. >> the plane had taken off from a small airfield about a mile away. no word on the pilot's condition but thankfully no one on the ground was injured. a college student in indiana says he was left in a cave for three days. 19-year-old lucas cavar is part of the caving club. after being separated from a group of others he was
