david muir will have the latest on the developments surrounding healthcare and the rhetoric with north korea. that's tonight after aings news at 6 o'clock. >> the latest on the investigation into a plainy plane crash in montgomery county. the ntsb is on the scene in whitpain township, a neighborhood there where the plane went down this weekend. "action news" reporter vernon odom live for us at the scene and vern, you just learned new information about the pilot. >> reporter: i have, sharrie. late breaking even before that the ntsb, the federal agents who are investigating this crash have just pretty much completed their physical examination of the area. you can see behind me tow trucks and workmen about to remove the debris. i now have the pilot's name. he's a financial manager from cost ton manager. philip beg man jr. the pilot remains in critical condition at this hour. investigators from the national transportation safety

board have been scouring the area around the crash scene all day trying to determine the exact cause of yesterday's late afternoon small plane accident in the yard of 25 meade road. the plane hit trees and bushes before slightly damaging the residence itself. part of the plane's wing could be seen on the roof. this happened before 5:30 moments after the pilot took off from nearby wing's field. this veteran pilot saw the two seater plane like this one struggling before takeoff. we're concealing the witness' identity. >> i noticed that it didn't seem to be getting the amount of rpm's that it should be getting and then when it started to roll down the runway i knew it wasn't getting the full rpm's that it should get because it took most of the whole runway to take off and that plane's a light plane and it should have been off the ground sooner than that. >> reporter: the resident of the house identified as francine dana dell recchi was at home but not interviewed. the pilot has been identified by police as philip bent ner

jr. he remains in critical condition tonight at penn presbyterian hospital in philadelphia. after the crash, neighbors ran to see what had happened. many had to help save beck ner's life. they had to cut him out with scissors. >> they come over quite a bit but we've never seen one come in that low. we just heard the crash. i thought a tree had fallen down. we all ran outside and, you know, you could smell the gas, the fumes. >> reporter: sharrie, the full ntsb investigation report will take some time before it comes out. philip beck ner jr. was alone in the airplane at the time t he remains in critical condition at this hour. live in whitpain township, montgomery county, i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news." >> a philadelphia medic unit

got caught up in the middle of a neighborhood melee early this morning and had a tire slashed. the unit was on a routine call in the 4900 block of c street in feltonville around 1:00 a.m. when this all happened. those involved in the melee were running around the vehicle with some jumping on top of it. the crew called for help from police and officers took two people into custody. no one was seriously hurt. >> police are investigating a deadly crash involving a school bus in mount laurel. it happened this morning. chopper6 was overhead as investigators blocked off the area of south church street and country lane. the motorcycleist died at the scene. no children on the bus were injured. no word as to what caused this crash. >> time for a check of the accuweather forecast. >> i mean -- >> hot. >> it's hot. area not only yesterday but today. it was 92 yesterday and it was humid as well as staying muggy today. 91 so far and in fact this is the latest in the year we have had back to back 90-degree days in the city of philadelphia since 1970 but we're going to finally say goodbye to the 90's as we go through the rest of the week. it was in the mid 90's records broken in chicago over the weekend. 92 so far today. near 90 in saint louis, atlanta but notice that big drop, bismarck 53 degrees, so there are some signs of fall waiting in the wings. hurricane irma is off the coast of north and south carolina, hurricane right now winds sustained 80 miles an hour but that's moving out to sea but it's going to bring another day two or he even three of a high risk for rip currents along our shore points from delaware up to new jersey and with that high risk through thursday, please do not swim. we had another death because of rip currents over the weekend in north jersey and

brian, that marks eight deaths this year on the jersey coast due to rip currents, the most ever seen in one year since statistics have been kept for those particular records since 1998 so just stay out of the water. we'll talk about a cool down coming up. >> adam thanks. the beautiful weather we're experiencing has stretched out the beach season but officials are sending an urgent reminder today that though the water may look inviting conditions remain dangerous and as adam just said they have proven deadly. nora muchanic reports from ship bottom on long beach island. >> reporter: there were dozens of rescues up and down the jersey coast and lifeguards are telling us a dip in the ocean in this hot weather is not worth risking your life. >> absolutely life-threatening as we saw this weekend. >> reporter: lieutenant john skolnick on long beach island says the weather has been absolutely beautiful drawing lots of people to the beach during the off season. ship bottom has guards still

posted at selected beaches but most towns don't. and while the water is inviting, swimming right now is a real risk. >> the past week with josé sitting out there for the week and now maria slowly approaching it makes for very rough conditions. >> reporter: as the week goes on its expected to get even worse. >> it could pull you out in the a second. you get tired, scared and egg anything can happen. >> i was in yesterday. i got up to here. it just pulls your feet out and the top is knocking you down. it's brutal out there, it really is. >> i don't go in. i'm afraid to go in. it's too rough. >> reporter: stay. >> i stay up here. >> reporter: most of this guarded beach only went in ankle deep. we watched the lone man who 20 as hawpe pulled in by the undertow. the lifeguard called him closer to shore. >> they're only here for another week and what happens after that? people can drown when they're gone. i mean its 80 degrees. it's pretty tough to say you can't go in the water. >> we always come and try to

find a place where a lifeguard is that i told them not to go out, just stay right here. >> stay out of the water if there's no guards. you get swept away in a second if you lose your feet and it can be very dangerous. >> reporter: and deadly as it was this past week. you may be tempted to take a dip but lifeguards tell us the ocean is very dangerous right now and you've got to treat it that way. in ship bottom, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> crews are working to repair a sewage leak at baeder field in atlantic city. work is under way right now to replace the 40-year-old pipe that broke sometime over the weekend. at one point it was spewing sewage on the old airport grounds and into the surrounding bodies of water. the atlantic county utilities authority called in an emergency contractor and promises to work around the clock to fix this problem. people in atlantic city ventnor margate and long longport are being asked to conserve water so that less of it is flowing through the damaged line. >> it is time now for a first check on the "action news"

[laughter] the news on the traffic front not so great especially in delaware county this afternoon where we're starting the afternoon rush with a crash in the southbound lanes of 95 just south of 476, the blue route. at the moment as they try and clean up they're taking out the two left lanes leaving us with just that one right lane squeezing by heading down toward the delaware state line and we're very quickly backing up on the southbound side of 95 coming away from philadelphia international airport with speeds in the teens at best. i would stay local if i were you, roads like 291, 13, even macdade boulevard or baltimore pike. 95 southbound through delco, not where you want to be at the moment t had some traffic light troubles in north philadelphia by the wells fargo bank. we're getting back up to pace there. a big problem in chester county. a truck flipped over earlier

this afternoon on the ramp from the downingtown interchange to the westbound side of the turnpike. traffic there backing up onto 100. if you have e-z pass i would use the malvern interchange at route 29 instead of the downingtown interchange to get on the westbound turnpike this afternoon. in churchman's crossing crash along route four, churchman's road can get you around that. let's grab the ipad check your ways home on the waze app. in lower saucon coming away from bethlehem on 78 eastbound getting reports of a crash there. you see a lot of people reporting congestion as a result of that accident. we'll check it again, brian and sharrie, coming up in the next half hour. >> all right, matt, thank you. and still ahead on "action news" at 4:00, the eagles fresh off that dramatic win over the giants are now dealing with season ending injuries to one of its stars. we have details about the latest on darren sproles. >> plus, a deadly church shooting in tennessee. why investigators say this was not the suspect's first sign of violence and how a young usher likely saved lives.

>> the eagles have flying high after their last second win against the giants on sunday but the team will be missing a star when they take the field next week. >> darren sproles is out for the season. he was hurt not once but twice on the very same play. sports director ducis rodgers joining us with details on the injuries, ducis. >> reporter: eagles head coach doug pederson calls it a double whammy. darren sproles suffered a broken arm and torn acl. his season is over perhaps his career as well. the injury occurred early in the second quarter. sproles surgery on the arm today, surgery to address the knee injury later. before the season the 34-year-old sproles had said this might be his last season. he has been an important part of the run game and punt return game. he made the pro bowl each of the past three seasons.

the nfl and the first amendment but today during a white house briefing, press secretary sara sanders deflected questions about the specific derogatory choice of words used by the president to describe nfl players who kneel in protest during the national anthem. the president used the full phrase of sob and said the players should be fired. well, outrage followed with many calling the president's words divisive. sanders side stepped the barrage of questions on the topic today. >> this isn't about the president being against something which is what everybody wants to drive. this is about the president being for something. this is about the president being for respecting our country through symbols like the american flag, like the national anthem and the hundreds of thousands of people that actually stand versus the few hundred that may have knelt. >> ♪ >> the president also tweeted today saying his comments were not about race but about the american flag. >> six weeks from now former

congressman anthony weiner will be reporting to prison. a judge handed o down a 21 month sentence earlier today which begins november 6th. weiner put his head in his hands and cried as the news was announced. weiner was also ordered to pay $10,000 and enroll in a sex offender treatment program for sexting with a 15-year-old girl. >> the fbi has launched a civil rights investigation into yesterday's deadly shooting at a church in tennessee. 25-year-old emanuel samson said nothing as he was led to jail on murder charges. samson is charged with opening fire inside and outside the burnett chapel church of christ near nashville. one woman was killed. six other people including the pastor were hurt. a 22-year-old usher tried to get the shooter's gun saving many others. >> pulled the trigger 'cause he had the gun pointed at him but, yeah, i'm proud of him. >> samson attended that church

a year or two ago. he does have a long police record of violence and on record as also having a suicide attempt. >> now to wall street on this monday afternoon. the stocks opening up the work week on the downside. the dow falling 53 and a half points today, the nasdaq also off just about 56 and a third. the s & p 500 down just more than five points on the day. >> what is not down, the temperatures. i had to adjust my air conditioner today. i was actually hot in my house. >> they're cranking again out there, that hum is back in the neighborhoods as that heat and humidity is kind of whacking us in the face here. >> no complaints. you can't complain about it. >> yes, you can. >> no, no. >> we're not complaining. >> some day soon we'll be longing for this. >> let's move on. let's take a look at the weather center here. these two could talk summer all year long. it's a beautiful shot here as you can see that blue sky above. we are sun soaked but the vantage point from this beautiful, you step out and that's when you quickly break

a sweat. in fact, as we take a look at some of those dewpoints again which is a measure of how much moisture's in the air, when you break that 70-degree mark you can say it is tropical, it is oppressive out there and we're at that for millville, cape may, reading 71 degrees. 68 in philadelphia and when you have such high dewpoints, you factor with the air temperature, this is how it feels when you step out. 95 degrees in philadelphia right now, 96 in the lehigh valley, 95 in reading, 93 in wilmington and a little bit better at the shore there with a bit of a sea breeze, temperatures feeling like they're only in the mid 70's despite it is a little bit tropical. the top of the newscast i called this hurricane irma. yes, sorry, it's been a long hurricane season. this is maria, hurricane maria winds sustained at 80 miles per hour. there you can see the center and there's a couple bands now heading to the outer banks of north carolina where they'll feel some tropical storm force winds but that storm and that hurricane will kick out to sea and really not lash any of the

eastern seaboard other than those really large waves and rip currents. tonight mostly clear warm sticky at home. 69 philadelphia, 66 millville. dover cape may at 68 degrees. as we go through our tuesday, we're not going back into the 90's but temperatures still running close to 11 or so degrees above normal. we start in the 70's in the morning. it is warm, humid in the afternoon, hazy sun, 86 or so degrees at 5 o'clock. and that should be our high for the day. hurricane maria moving to the north at seven as a cat one. then as you can see it makes a sharp turn as it goes into a tropical storm and then way out to sea by thursday and friday, it's going tock kicked away by a cold front coming in from the west so good news there for the east coast. as we look at the four day at 4:00 forecast, 86 tomorrow, very warm and muggy. another warm day on wednesday with temperatures in the upper 80's. summer's last gasp here before the breeze kicks up thursday, the sunshine is out, the humidity drops, 82 degrees and

there in the city of philadelphia. trenton 89, 90 for wilmington, 81 a little bit cooler at the atlantic city airport but as you factor in that high humidity feels like 95 in philadelphia, 96 in allentown, 93 wilmington, trenton and again at the shore, because of a sea breeze you kind of cut that number way down to around 82 degrees. as we take a live look right now at sky6 philadelphia international airport you can see the haze in the distance there. again, feels more like a july, august day as opposed to a late september day but no weather woes when you're talking about flying in this kind of weather. so far today 91 in the city of philadelphia and, yes, we are flirting with record territory. the record only 1 degree higher than this set back in 1970 and at this point we are running officially 16 degrees above that normal of 75. we will say goodbye to the 90's as we get into the day tomorrow but it's going to be sometime before we can kind of pull it back into the mid 70's for highs but they are coming. we'll talk about it in that

survive. a tanker truck spilled home heating oil all over a bucks county road this morning after it struck a concrete median. it happened near county line and lower state road in warrington just after 7:30. police say the truck hit the median while trying to make a turn rupturing the tank. traffic was detoured around that scene for several hours so crews could clean up the mess. >> parents of a delaware charter school plan a rally tonight in support of a school principal, apparently removed by the board. well, they were busy making protest signs today in support of sal ome thomas el. beverly white says el was loved and respected by students and parents alike and she wants to know what happened. >> we want answers to why this happened, why the embarrassment to this principal, okay. i don't know what they're going to say but they better have a good one because this is not right. >> well, the school is well known for its chess team which

has won several national championships. >> the widow of a murdered pennsylvania state trooper is now suing the parents of the man who killed her husband. tiffany dixon is the widow of bryan dickson the trooper fatally shot by eric frein outside his barracks in 2014. dixon says frein's parents manipulated their son to strongly dislike the police. she says that dislike is what convinced frein to act so violently. frein was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in april of this year. >> first responders who died in the line of duty last september in delaware were honored today and it's a tradition that will now continue annually. a ceremony was held in wilmington marking the one year anniversary of a house fire that killed three firefighters. captain christopher leach, lieutenant jerry thickes jr. and lieutenant artis hope lost their lives. wilmington mayor mike purzycki signed an executive order declaring september 24th each

matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center with the update for us. hey, matt. >> unfortunately we're not getting home in a flash. we would like that but the brake lights are lighting up this evening sharrie here along 95 southbound and normal technological we wouldn't bat an eye at this southbound delay its kind of a normal one but this afternoon it's extra heavy because of an earlier crash southbound just up ahead just south of 476, the blue route. the good news is the crash is now gone. all three lanes are back in business but we're still trying to recover here on the southbound side of 95 with speeds in the 20's as you come south of philadelphia international airport. if you're headed northbound, the typical fair of just 8 miles per hour by the vine street expressway. and then up ahead on the off-ramp to the betsy ross bridge there is a broken down vehicle blocking one of the lanes but you can squeeze by. just something to watch out for there. we had a crash in bensalem bucks county along street road, the westbound side where the outback steakhouse is on the eastbound side. sounds like that is in the process of clearing out. however, elsewhere in bucks county just south of quakertown we're watching a

bad crash along trumbauersville road at hillcrest road. overturned truck in chester county partially blocking the ramp from downingtown to the westbound side of the turnpike. if you're trying to get on the westbound side of 76, the turnpike this afternoon and you had e-z pass, i would do so via 29 in the malvern entrance ramp instead. but better news down in delaware and churchman's crossing, the crash along route four has cleared out. we're back in business there with just some typical slowing developing on the southbound side of highway one in christiana. we'll check it again brian and sharrie, coming up in the 5 o'clock hour. >> all right, matt sounds good. stepping outside right now, sky6 hd giving us a live look at city hall and look at that. the water is actually on today and for a good reason. it's a hot one out there. >> yeah, and it is still late september. meteorologist adam joseph with the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast coming up next.

>> ♪ >> meteorologist adam joseph joining us now. people may be thinking they're watching "action news" on their dvr from august. >> nearly a record here. the record 92. we're almost there sitting at 91 degrees but it feels a lot hotter than that when you factor in the humidity. so, being near water is a good thing and that's where joan dix was earlier today above the delaware overlooking the moshulu penn's landing. 95 was moving pretty smoothly but you can see the sun glistening off of the delaware there on a very summer-like day. in fact, another place you would probably want to go is the shore. looking at sky6 live lots of sunshine there. but we're still dealing with some pretty strong rip currents and large hayes and that's going to remain the case as we go through this week so i do not recommend if you're heading to the shore to really go anywhere deeper than

your ankles and of course you always want to obey and listen to any lifeguards that are still on duty because the continued rough surf is going to extend through tomorrow, wednesday and thursday. the high risk for rip currents is for the next three days, so definitely stay out of the weather as maria is drifting off of the carolinas right now and will be heading out to sea even though we don't see any clouds or any rainfall from maria we're definitely still going to see those very large waves. feels like 95 degrees in philadelphia and 96 allentown, 95 in inn reading, 93 wilmington and millville and a little bit better at the shore where those temperatures or feel-like temperatures only in the low 70's. satellite and radar, couple things going on. we've got all that heat building on the east coast. you can see the jet stream and where all of our weather is moving from wichita omaha north of chicago into the hudson bay and eastern parts of canada so heat is taking over the eastern half of the

country and due in part a little bit the pattern can't break down quick because you have maria, that hurricane kind of blocking things a little bit here and again, just scraping parts of the outer banks of north carolina with some showers at the present time. mostly clear, warm and sticky tonight, 65 in the suburbs 69 degrees for center city. winds will be very light and variable. tomorrow the hurricane will still be breasting again to the south and east of the outer banks. 86 degrees, warm, a few high clouds around at times but very hazy, very humid and finally the saving grace from the heat and humidity and from blocking maria from moving up the eastern seaboard and kicking her out to sea will be that cold front and a really strong high to the north and west that will finally move things along here, so one last day of the heat and humidity, 88 on wednesday before we start to drop that humidity and those temperatures at the end of the week. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, upper 80's for

with today's new developments. john. >> reporter: well, hi, guys. well, the authorities set aside time to pick a jury today but as you say new evidence turned up over late last week to the defense altered the landscape here. that prompted the two guilty pleas, one for assault the other for fleeing arrest. as for the man who was the target of that assault he is relieved that things are winding down. >> yeah, just happy it's over. you know, every now and then -- the fact that it's over. >> reporter: in this video from last may michael ryan who has cerebral palsy in the gray shirt walking out of a 7-eleven. he is mocked and then punched in the face by barry baker. until today, baker had claimed while the attack was wrong, the video didn't tell the entire story. his defense, he and michael ryan had traded insults earlier at this nearby pub barnaby's but a check of barnaby's surveillance video and a system that records all patron's photo id's dashed that claim.
