police officers we've been told. as you can see firefighters are using bucket trucks to reach the flames which were shooting through the roof, the billowing smoke as well. the red cross says at least 20 units have fire damage. we're continuing to follow this story on air and online. stay with "action news" and 6abc.com as more information becomes available from this huge fire at this condominium complex. >> also breaking, the south jersey father who pleaded guilty to killing his three-year-old son will spend 10 years in prison. it is friday afternoon, i'm sharrie williams. >> and i'm rick williams in for brian taff. the big story on "action news," our other big story is david creato's sentencing. nora muchanic was in court this afternoon. she joins us live in camden with the details. nora. >> reporter: rick, sharrie, only one word out of d.j. creato in the courtroom. he said no when the judge asked him if he wanted to say

anything and tonight as the camden county man is sentenced his family is still maintaining he's innocent. sporting a new short haircut instead of his long ponytail david d.j. creato entered a camden county courtroom for sentencing in the 2015 death of his son three-year-old brendan creato of haddon township. creato made a plea deal with prosecutors weeks before his second trial where was to start in december admitting to aggravated manslaughter. he said he deprived brendan of oxygen but didn't say how. >> he lied to the police. he lied to his parents. worst of all he he lied to brendan's mother who certainly had a right to know exactly what had happened to her son. >> reporter: a 14 minute video was played showing dozens of photos from brendan's short life. it was silent. court rules don't permit music. creato declined to say anything before the judge sentenced him to 10 years in

prison. after the sentencing his family maintains he's innocent. >> he took the plea bargain and my life and i and a lot of family and friends still believe in his innocence. >> he agrees that it's his recklessness that led to this. he's accepting responsibility for that end of what occurred here but that is a very different situation from saying i know what happened and i'm responsible for everything that happened. >> reporter: samantha denoto and christine she was had no comment as they left the courtroom. prosecutors read a statement from dj's maternal grandmother saying that she thinks the little boy was a angel and they hopes one day creato will say exactly what happened to the toddler and why. meantime given the time he's already served creato could be out of jail in six and a half years. live in camden, i'm nora muchanic, channel6 "action news." >> nora, thank you. we have breaking sports news this afternoon. the phillies are replacing

manager pete mackanin. >> he will finish out the last few games of the season and take on a new role come 2018. sports director ducis rodgers joining us with the details. of course this has people talking. some saw it coming, maybe some didn't. >> i didn't see it coming. pete mackanin was named manager of the police phillies in 2015. mccann nick owns a 172 and 237 record during his time with the phillies. this season the team showed some improvement since the all-star break this year the phillies have gone 35 and 37. that's not great but it's not terrible. mackanin got the phillies from point a to point b in this rebuilding process. management is looking for someone to take them to the next step. >> our goal for the search will be to identify a leader that can help lead us into the future and take us where we want to go.

wednesday. even that 78 yesterday is above that normal and today we're just 2 degrees shy of it despite that it does feel on the coolish side. temperatures to our north in the 60's right now for burlington syracuse. that is it. even pittsburgh right now settling in around 71 degrees. so, it is friday night. if you're heading out on the town here, bring a light jacket, 65 degrees at 9 o'clock under a mainly clear sky. a few clouds bubbling up by 11 o'clock at 62 degrees. the low overnight 56 degrees. but then more changes do come. you can see this spin strong low pressure and an associated cold front with some clouds and showers working its way from the northwest to the south and east. i'll let you know what this means as we head into the upcoming weekend in that full accuweather forecast. a big difference between saturday and sunday and we'll chat about that in just a little bit, sharrie. >> see you in a bit adam. thank you. well, president trump today is defending his response to puerto rico's hurricane destruction and says

"big decisions are coming in regard to the cost of rebuilding the island." more help is on the way to puerto rico. medical aid in the form of a ship is heading down right now. the u.s. ms comfort left virginia today. the 894-foot long navy ship is in essence a floating hospital. the president is expected to survey the damage on the island come tuesday. "action news" reporter dann cuellar is live in puerto rico which is a heavily damaged town where people are in dire need. >> reporter: that's right, sharrie the scene is indicative of what is going on in many other parts of puerto rico. long lines of people trying to get necessities, basic necessities like ice, water and gas. and the backdrop for all of this are scenes like this, buildings left heavily damaged by hurricane maria. and then resourceful people using spaces that were damaged trying to run a business. a sign that puerto rico may be

down but definitely not out for the count. nine days after hurricane maria blew through here, the national guard is now directly traffic in the absence of traffic signals. a sign that the government appears to be getting a plan in order to deal with the chaos. there is still no electricity and there may not be for some time. that means people need things like ice to keeper are you surables from spoiling but the lines have been long and the availability of ice sporadic. many of these folks have been waiting for hours. >> one bag of ice per person. >> one bag per person in all this wait for just one bag. >> yeah, right. >> reporter: hardly seems worth it. >> well, you can say that again. >> reporter: but you need this ice. >> yes, true. >> reporter: there are also long lines to get gas to run vehicles and power generators. availability of gas has also been sporadic. the trick is trying to find out when the next tanker truck arrives. sometimes people are told it

will come soon. sometimes they're told it may be tomorrow. frustration is growing here. >> really frustrated with the government and the private agencies. they need to step up the plan here, yeah. >> reporter: the reality is a lot more coordination is needed between the local and federal governments in dealing with widespread issues. until that happens, frustration and anger will only increase in the desperate effort here to survive. live in puerto rico, i'm dann cuellar channel6 "action news." >> ♪ >> dann thank you. there's more breaking news at this hour. there's been an arrest for the deadly gunfire in the typically quiet town of phoenixville yesterday county. 21-year-old keon carpenter was taken into custody moments ago. "action news" reporter vernon odom talked to carpenter's family when he was still on the run. he joins us live from the police department with more. >> reporter: vernon. >> reporter: rick, the police here in phoenixville

had been confident that the suspect had not fled the area that he was somewhere "in the philadelphia region." i did talk with the suspect's family earlier today and they expressed sympathy for the family of the victim as they've lived out this nightmare. tonight this man, 21-year-old keon carpenter of phoenixville remains at lamp and wanted for the murder of this phoenixville resident 20-year-old joshua mitchell. they knew each other. police say it happened at 9:45 on bridge street. witnesses saw the two men arguing then heard two gunshots. later outside a nearby church police found what they believe is the handgun used in the murder. this mitchell family friend say this is the second tragedy to befall this family. >> this is the second shouldn't got killed. the first got killed in pottstown. >> reporter: police have not reached a motive on the

killing but their theory includes drugs and guns. i spoke with carpenter's aunt and mother who are devastated by this turn of events. you won't see their faces. >> first of all i know my son ain't a bad boy. second of all, all kids have their ways. my son out here like the average teenager. one thing i do know he's not going to jump off for nothing. >> my nephew is not a bad child. my nephew is a boy. he is not a bad child. he does not look for fights. i raised him. >> reporter: both ladies say they have not heard from keyon since last night. they extend their sympathies to josh mitchell's family. i'm vernon odom channel6 "action news" at police headquarters in phoenixville. >> vern thank you for the breaking details there. time for the "action news" traffic report. >> all right, let's go live to matt pelman in the "action news" traffic center. matt, t.g.i.f., hm. >> yeah, we made it. happy about that but i'll tell

you rick and sharrie, i walked in this afternoon i said oh, boy, it's going to be one of these afternoons. we have a vehicle that flipped over 10 minutes ago along the blue route 476 northbound in delaware county. this is approaching the media swarthmore interchange baltimore pike. as you can see a lot of emergency crews have arrived on the scene in the last 10 minutes and traffic is only squeezing by on the right shoulder coming northbound on the blue route off of 95. so, quickly, we're stacking up with speeds like 3 miles per hour. you want to think alternates like 320 or 252. we had an earlier crash on 95 southbound by the barry bridge. that was already backed up there. that crash has cleared but the delays now from the blue route accident are spilling back towards philadelphia international airport. as you're detouring through delco watch out, there is a crash along 452, pennell road at marionville road. police activity in bucks county along route one, the super highway at oxford valley. luckily that has cleared out so we're getting back up to pace there. if you're lucky enough to be down the shore there's a crash

officials are telling americans to avoid traveling to cuba after a series of what's being called dramatic attacks on diplomats. the u.s. is ordering more than half of our personnel to leave the island dealing a blow to the already delicate ties between our two countries. the u.s. embassy there will now stop processing visas indefinitely and that embassy could close altogether. this all comes in the wake of unexplained health problems which have left more than 20 diplomats in cuba with hearing loss and traumatic brain injury. cuba's government firmly denies any involvement in this and says that reducing staffing at its havana embassy is precipitous and will damage relations. but travel providers this afternoon say there have been no reports of american travelers being harmed. and also say travel to cuba by americans does remain legal so travel at your own risk despite these warnings, rick. >> all right, alicia, thank you very much. well a 12th patient has

died after being rescued from an overheated nursing home in florida. the facility lost air conditioning during hurricane irma. police in hollywood are treating all 12 of the deaths as part of a criminal investigation. some of the victims had body temperatures near 110 degrees. the nursing home has since been shut down. investigators want to know why the patients were left in such conditions when there was a hospital that had power and was fully functioning right across the street. climbers in california's yosemite national park on alert after two rock falls over the past two days. yesterday a hunk of granite broke off in the park's popular el capitan rock formation leaving one man injured and filling a nearby valley with dust. the slide came one day after another slab of granite broke off the same formation killing a british tourist and injuring his wife. park officials say rock falls happen about 80 times a year but deaths are rare. the last time a rock fall

killed climber at yosemite was in 2013. >> there is a renewed push to rename 30th street station in honor of a long time philadelphia congressman. senator bob casey along with a host of elected officials held a news conference there today. well, they are urging amtrak to rename the station for william h. gray, iii 30th street station. congress approved the renaming back in 2014 but it still has not been done. former mayor wilson goode is among those calling for the change. >> if there's anyone in this city, in this state, in this country that this station deserves to be named after, it is william herbert gray, iii. >> gray who was the former pastor at bright hope baptist church served in congress from 1979 to 1991. amtrak says it has proposed ways to honor gray and looks forward to working with the family to recognize the former

congressman. >> all right. time now to check the numbers on wall street and it was all the numbers on indices were up on this end of the work week. as you can see the dow is up 23 and change nasdaq up 42.5, s & p 500 up almost 10. ikea furniture is notoriously difficult to assemble and now the company is getting smart by buying a startup that can help out. the furniture company just acquired task rabbit which let's users hire people to help do various tasks. one the deal goes through there will be task rabbit kiosks in ikea stores. it will still operate in its current online platform. no word as to how much ikea paid. >> time for a check of the accuweather forecast. adam is back and what a cool night. you said crisp and you were right about that. >> yes, kind of like that lightness to the air today. >> chilly actually this morning, though. >> and that's seasonable, normal but we've been so far above normal that -- >> you for got. >> -- it felt really cool.

outside our window there in the weather center on sky6 live over the ben franklin bridge, a lot of blue today upstairs just a few high clouds at times but, yes, another dry day on tap and as we head into the weekend there are some changes to begin the weekend on your saturday. we'll have some sun in the morning and then as we go through the morning into the afternoon you're going to notice a lot of clouds erupting in the sky because of a weak front that passes through. it could spark an isolated shower but most of us dry tomorrow and a cool breeze, a high of just 67 degrees but we gain all that sun back on sunday. that is the pick of the weekend. wall to wall sunshine, still comfy temperatures of around 71 degrees. look at the numbers right now. basically 71 is a pretty popular number for wilmington philadelphia dover. sunday will be much like today. 70 in allentown, 73 in millville and along the shore a bit cooler in the 60's. now, when we look at the month of september we have one more day to go, tomorrow, but we started the month at least the first half of the month well

below average. it was really cool for the first half of september. then once the 14th hit, all bets were off. that cool month flipped right around and we've had 15 straight days in a row with temperatures above normal, closing out the month close to two and a half degrees above normal. today goes down as a cooler than average day and so will tomorrow. as we look at satellite and radar, there you can see low pressure near toronto. that low and associated front is going to sync to the south and east and bring some clouds our way but again, keep most of us dry here during the day tomorrow despite it looks ominous at times. friday night lights we've got high school football and high school huddle tonight partly cloudy light winds kickoff 654th quarter at 60 degrees. reminder you can see the highlights tonight at 11:00 p.m. for your favorite team. future tracker at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning, there you can see the clouds coming from the north and then they kind of take over at times during the afternoon and again there could be a stray shower around and also in addition to the

>> ♪ >> college students got the chance to see how the sprinklers in their dorms can make a huge difference during an emergency. the philadelphia fire department partnered with the university of pennsylvania for a demo at hamilton field on campus. first they started a fire in a trash can inside a room with sprinklers. it caused minimal damage. the other room without was full engulfed and destroyed in

less than two minutes. the demonstration certainly caught the eye of students who were nearby and taught an important lesson in fire safety. >> well, the addiction awareness task force in camden held a softball tournament today. the games are aimed at raising awareness for those battling opioid addiction. the teams were made up of people in recovery as well as local law enforcement officials and community leaders. today's games were played at campbell's field in camden. >> of the goldbergs is back for its fifth season on 6abc. one of the stars is known for his standup comedy routine and he's bringing it here to philadelphia. the show is based in our area and created by adam goldberg who centers the series on his childhood in jenkintown in the 1980's. brian caln who plays coach miller the gym teacher on the show is here in philly all weekend long doing standup at helium comedy club. he says you can expect an hour

you won't believe what they're trying to sell it as coming up. >> and a deadly fall from grace. a center city real estate agent is now facing murder charges for allegedly shooting her boyfriend. what we know about the crime, the woman accused and the victim. >> all right. but we begin this half hour with the latest on breaking news from lakewood, ocean county within the last few minutes "action news" has learned at least four people have now been injured by this massive fire at covington village. that includes two police officers an ems worker and a civilian. the flames sparked at the condominium complex for people 55 and up at about 3 o'clock this afternoon. the fire on the 100 block of sophie lane quickly exploded and engulfed several buildings. dozens of firefighters still trying to put out the blaze right now. and so far at least 20 units have been damaged. stay with "action news" for the very latest both on the air and online at 6abc.com. >> other news this friday. a center city real estate

agent is behind bars at this hour charged with murdering her boyfriend earlier this week. "action news" reporter chad pradelli talked to the victim's family today. he joins us now live from the scene of this deadly shooting that happened in fishtown. what we know at this point. chad. >> reporter: sharrie the alleged killings happened on the second floor of this fishtown apartment adjacent to i-95. police tell me that the victim was shot point blank in the face. it appears a minor argument escalated to murder. now the victim's family wants to know why. >> i feel -- i almost feel like i want to hug her because what happened? what drove you to do this? >> reporter: the family is numb. they cannot believe his girlfriend jeanette wakefield shot and killed their loved one early wednesday morning with her two young children just steps away in her fishtown apartment. these are photos of the couple just a few weeks ago during

happier times. >> just a senseless tragedy that didn't need to be what it was. it's really a shame. now two families are affected. one which we'll never see again and the young children of jeanette. >> i am dumb founded. i can't believe it. i actually thought that maybe it wasn't my brother that she -- she shot because they loved each other. >> reporter: police and the family say the couple had an argument earlier in the night over a movie and a broken heirloom table. how that turned to murder is baffling. corrigan has a history of drug arrests but police say there were no reports of domestic violence. >> they had an argument. miss wakefield lives there, corrigan is oftentimes a guest. an argument ensued. he was out in the hallway. she opened the door, shot him one time in the face. >> reporter: wakefield was a real estate agent. her sign is atop the building where the murder occurred. police say she had a license

to carry that weapon and corrigan's family says it was terry hoop urged her to get -- who urged her to get it because of her job. >> i don't have a brother, i have one sister and my cousins was like my brother. >> reporter: and wakefield's linked in account says she's a real estate broker with coldwell banker. the company says she's no longer with cold well banker and her last deal was in july. chad pradelli channel6 "action news." >> chad thank you. delaware state police are trying to track down an armed robber who shot a convenience store clerk in the hand today. "action news" was outside the quick mart on the 100 block of maryland avenue as the worker walked over to an ambulance with a shirt wrapped around his wound at the time. the clerk was shot at the richardson park store just before 1:00 this afternoon. the robber fled the scene. >> police are asking for the public's help in identifying a burglar who treated the

philadelphia mills fall food court like his personal atm. surveillance video shows the suspect jumping over the counter of a restaurant space shared by subway and little tokyo back on september 2nd. he left the same way after taking cash from the register. the same man returned again on september 10th but this time after stealing cash from the register the burglar made sure to wipe his fingerprints off the glass. anyone with information on the thefts should contact northeast detectives. police in the city's queen village section are searching for a burglar who broke into a home along the 800 block of south watson street last month. investigators say the suspect knocked on the front door and when no one answered he went behind the building and forced his way through a back door. surveillance video from inside the home captures the suspect as he goes through a child's room. he's later scared off by an alarm. if you recognize the intruder, you're asked to contact the authorities. >> at least three people were hurt in an accident involving

a medical transport van. this happened in delaware today. it happened near east newport pike and latimer street in newport. delaware state police say the collision left some of the occupants trapped. two people in the van and one person in the sedan were hurt. we are still waiting to hear what caused the crash and how serious the injuries are. well, authorities say this man is responsible for robbing four montgomery county banks of recently. police stopped jamil coats in connection to a montgomery township robbery. when they searched the philadelphia man's car they discovered cash linked to a bank robbery in upper gwynedd township much police say coates who is also accused of robbing banks in whitpain and upper dublin townships got away with nearly 20 grand. he's due to be in court on october 11th. >> all right. time now for another check of the accuweather forecast on this final friday of september. meteorologist adam joseph has

the details, the cooler details this weekend. >> one fine friday. little changes here on saturday and then we'll win the sun back by sunday. as we take a look at this evening, though, as you step out again there's going to be that chill so it's friday night many folks hitting the town maybe going on a dinner date or two, bring a light jacket, if you will. 6 o'clock temperature 70 degrees. already going back into the mid 60's by 8 o'clock and in fact low 60's by 10 o'clock at night. that's in center city. you can expect 50's by that time in most of the suburbs but right now that sun is in control. take a look right there. live on sky6 in chester right at our philadelphia union at talon energy stadium, there's a big game here over the weekend on sunday and you can expect a sky just like that on sunday. in fact, as we take a look at the forecast here seattle in town, mostly sunny and gorgeous. the starting temp 67 degrees and by the time the game finishes, a little later on in the afternoon, your temperature settling in around

thanks matt. let's get another check on the highways and byways for you this afternoon. >> you do have one friend in this studio right now matt pelman laughing at your jokes and he's here now with the traffic. >> we share the same corniness. we always laugh at each other. good afternoon guys. you'll be pausing on your way home this evening whether you want to or not because there's a bunch of things in your way including this accident on the blue route northbound approaching the baltimore pike. the good news is it looks a lot better than it did during the last half hour when a vehicle was on its side. that vehicle has since been towed away. we still have emergency crews on the shoulder here, so it is still extra heavy really in both directions on the blue route. northbound's a, pennsylvaniaing lot coming off of 95 with speeds like 2 miles per hour but southbound is not a whole lot better with afternoon volume and the good old gaper delay. you start to jam approaching villanova on down toward 95. and on 95 itself, southbound still extra heavy from just past the airport on down to 476.

as we get ready to head into the weekend and more fall-like days on tap. >> yeah, there is but there's also summer-like air that's going to move in as well. >> okay. >> at the end of that seven-day forecast and a big weekend in town here for a lot of our sports teams. number one, we've got the phillies and the phanatic is back in the weather center here we've got the final series of the season here beginning tonight the mets that will go through the weekend. if you're heading down to the ballpark this evening it is going to be chilly so definitely need to bring at least a light sweatshirt or a jacket, mostly clear, a light wind 7 o'clock temp at 68 degrees. by 10 o'clock, already sliding to around 63 and again we just haven't been used to how cool these temperatures are despite that it is average for this time of year. as we look at sky6 right now over center city skyline from our temple university camera here and you can see just a few high clouds at times but overall that sunshine dominated the sky today and tried to get us close to

normal which is 73. right now we're at 71 degrees in philadelphia. 73 in millville. 71 in wilmington. right around 70 in allentown and a bit cooler at the shore, temperatures there matching the poconos in the 60's. satellite and radar, there is change knocking on our doorstep to the north and west. you can see the spin in the eastern great lakes. there's a cold front here and that will continue to slide in late tonight during the day tomorrow and that is just going to throw a little more in the way of clouds our way but not much in the way of precipitation. so, for tonight, clouds and stars kind of mix in especially late at night. seasonable, though, but chilly, 49 in the suburbs, 56 for the city. behind that front here on saturday, high pressure starting to come in from the north and west but just isn't close enough yet to give us a perfectly sunny day, so heavier on the cloud side than the sun side tomorrow, breezy, though, between that low and high. winds gusting to 25 with a high of just 67 degrees. then we can say hello to this high coming in here for sunday
