left on the top floors. we'll show you that in a moment. jeff chirico just arrived at the scene. he joins us now with the very latest. jeff. >> reporter: monica, this is as close as we can get right now. the fire took place about a quarter mile down that driveway. right now the fire is out but as you said, that apartment complex is destroyed. more than three dozen people are without a home tonight. let's show you what it looked like from chopper6 hd this afternoon. the fire was reported around 2:30. firefighters found flames shooting from the rooftop of this three-story apartment complex. we're told at least four people were injured including two police officers from lakewood. they were first on the scene and suffered smoke inhalation while rescuing a resident who was screaming for help. now, i spoke with the mayor he says those officers will be okay. that resident was more seriously injured and flown to a hospital. now, firefighters were able to put out the fire but as you can see, that rooftop is completely gone.

it is destroyed. they are still on the scene at this point putting out the hot spots on that three-story apartment complex. we're told it has 30 units, 37 people lived there. now, the red cross is on scene to help those who have been displaced by this fire. i just spoke with the red cross director just a few moments ago and she tells me that some 37 people are without a home. however, many of them are being picked up by family and taken home. they are now working to provide some food and possible shelter for those that remain. so, back out here live on the scene, we are still working to gather more details about this fire but once again, some 37 people displaced, four people injured including two police officers. we're reporting live in lakewood, jeff chirico, channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you, jeff. tonight the camden county father who admitted killing his little son is now finding out his fate. david d.j. creato will spend the next 10 years in prison for suffocating little three-year-old brendan. new jersey correspondent nora

muchanic was in court today during the highly emotional sentencing hearing and nora, did creato express any remorse? >> reporter: he did not, monica. he barely said a word and gave us no more insight into how he did this or why. prosecutors believe he did it to please a girlfriend who didn't like children but he is going to prison for the crime even though his family says he's not the killer. he's got a new look the ponytail is done but david d.j. creato of haddon township is still in a red jump shirt and will be for years. he was sentenced to 10 years behind bars in a plea deal for causing the death of his three-year-old son brendan in 2015. prosecutor christine shah read a letter from the boy's maternal grandmother. >> brendan was well cared for. i long to reunite with him one day. >> reporter: d.j. creato's parents were in court and so was brendan's mother. a 14 minute video was played

showing dozens of pictures of the toddler from his short life. the only thing creato said in court was the word no when the judge asked if he had anything to say. >> my grandson is not guilty. >> reporter: ma'am, he admitted it. >> he admitted to stopping -- well, he took a plea bargain. >> reporter: brendan's mother and prosecutors refused to comment after sentencing but d.j. creato's family maintains he's innocent. his first trial ended in a hung jury. >> it was too big of a gamble to go a second time around so he took the plea bargain and my wife and i and a lot of family and friends still believe in his innocence. >> what he pleaded to was recklessly causing his son's death. and that is a far cry from what he was charged with initially which was intentionally causing his death. >> reporter: creato will have to serve at least six and a half years in prison. he's getting credit for time

served. in camden, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." monica. >> now to my late word from the phillies this afternoon after several losing seasons, manager pete mackanin is out. sports director ducis rodgers joins us now with the very latest and ducis, the team just held a news conference to say what happened in the shakeup. >> this was a surprising news that came out this afternoon, monica. pete mackanin was named phillies manager june 26 of 2015. 27 months later he's out but not entirely. next season he'll be a special assistant to the general manager. entering the nightck not great but not terrible. mackanin got the phillies from point a to point b in this rebuilding process. management is looking for someone to take them to the next step. >> our goal for the search will be to identify a leader that can help lead us into the future and take us where we

dann cuellar is live on the ground in puerto rico. it's been 10 days since that storm struck. what are you finding now? >> reporter: monica, after waiting virtually all day to buy ice hundreds of people were finally allowed to buy one bag of ice each, two dollars a bag but guess what, within an hour, they ran out and there's still hundreds of people waiting in line for a bag of ice. the news hasn't even spread to them that they've run out and they don't have any for the rest of the day. long lines seems to be virtually the thing now just to get -- even at this convenience store here in caguas. this seems to be the new normal and frustratingly so for many people. in the absence of electricity nine days after hurricane maria flu through here generators are what's keeping things going for those lucky enough to have them but without gas, they are useless and the lines to get gas can be both challenging and frustrating. what time did you get here. >> about 2 o'clock in the morning. >> reporter: and the station doesn't open until 8 o'clock.

>> that's it. >> reporter: but that's how important it is to get gas. what do you need the gas for? >> for doing things you have to do. >> reporter: to be clear, there are signs of progress. the national guard has moved in to direct traffic in the absence of traffic signals to bring some sense of order to the chaos. >> they had a four staragen rally that came in. a general with one star only. i guess that one will take over the logistics. >> reporter: trash is finally being picked up again another good sign of things returning to normalcy but normalcy in the true sense of the word may be a long time in cupping. the power grid system was heavily damaged. there are miles and miles of downed power lines and it could be months before power is fully restored. and people are getting increasingly frustrated with long lines to get just about anything. >> you do the line, you get a point where they say there's no more ice you got to go back home, you got to find perhaps another ice plant maybe across the city and then gas lines atm lines in branch, lines everything, there's just a line and it doesn't really

seem to be getting any better. >> reporter: so, as you can see, the frustration is growing here as people long to get back to normal but normal considering the power grid was left in shambles may still be a long way off. in caguas, puerto rico, i'm dann cuellar channel6 "action news": mon cap. >> thank you dann. new jersey governor chris christie just announced a plan to activate 1100 emergency responders from the garden state to help with the recovery efforts in puerto rico. his signing of this executive order today also includes sending national guard troops. demonstrators worried about the possible humanitarian crisis in puerto rico have been rallying tonight for the last two hours across the street from philadelphia city hall. they say the government is dragging its feet and they're calling on authorities to get the backlog of food, water and fuel distributed to three and a half million american citizens in need on that island. much more on the crisis in the caribbean is coming up on world news tonight with david muir right after "action

boyfriend. it happened at her fishtown home. that's where chad pradelli is live tonight with the full story for us. chad. >> reporter: monica, the today, the shooting happened wednesday morning around 3:30 a.m. in this apartment building adjacent to 95. police say a minor argument escalated to murder aren't the and the victim's family is wondering why. the victim terry corrigan was shot in the face. the shooter and girlfriend jeanette wakefield pulled the trigger with her two young children just steps away. she then calmly called police. >> an argument ensued. he was out in the hallway. she opened the door shot him one time in the face. >> reporter: relatives of the victim say wakefield seemed to have it all. a good job as a real estate agent, two healthy kids in catholic school and a happy go lucky demeanor. >> i didn't know her to have a bad bone in her body. >> reporter: corrigan's sister says the two had their arguments in the past but were in a good place as of late. police and relatives say on

the night of the murder the two argued over all things a movie then say there was no history of domestic violence. >> i i'm dumb founded. i can't believe it. i actually thought that maybe it wasn't my brother that she -- she shot because they loved each other. >> reporter: police say corrigan had prior arrests for drugs but there's no indication that played a role. investigators and corrigan's family say wakefield had a license to carry the weapon and it was terri who urged her to get it because of her job. >> just a senseless tragedy that didn't need to be what it was. you know, it's really a shame. now two families are affected. one which will never see again and the young children of jeanette. >> reporter: and wakefield's linked in profile says she works for cold well banker. the company tells me she's no longer with the company and her last deal was in july. i'm live in fishtown, chad

>> a dramatic demonstration today of how dangerous a dorm room fire can be and how quickly flames spread without sprinklers. the university of pennsylvania's public safety division intentionally set these two mock dorms on fire with the help of the philadelphia fire department. one side had sprinklers, the other did not. you can see for yourself a huge difference. the organizations behind today's dorm room burn are pushing for all industrial commercial and residential buildings to install mandatory

sprinkler systems. ducis is here with the latest on the phillies shakeup and pete mackanin changing roles. >> yes, he's going to be going to a new role. no longer on the bench with the team after this season. phillies tried hard not to make this seem like a firing. pete mackanin will manage three more games for the team beginning tonight against the mets. he'll be a special assistant to the general manager. he was named manager of the phillies in june 2015. mackanin compiled a 172 and 237 record with this very young team. this year's team struggled but the phillies have been playing close to .500 ball since the all-star break. the organization feels it needs a new voice as the rebuilding process continues. mackanin tells us he's not bitter. >> this organization has been really good to me and i'd love to see this thing come to fruition. it would have been nice as manager but i'm thrilled that i can stick around and play a part in it he it's a different

day for us. >> as a team we're sad to see him go. you know, he's meant a lot to a lot of us in here. >> he's my first big league manager something that he'll always hold a special place in my career and he's helped me feel comfortable walking into this clubhouse any day. >> he'll finish out this season. to the eagles that would be the banged up eagles sunday they'll be short-handed when she she they visit the chargers. cox is out. with him out that means beau allen will see more playing time. jaylen watkins and corey graham also listed as out for this game. sunday's game in l.a. will present challenges like a cross country flight. >> reporter: they play in front of 70,000 fans every home game up to 100,000 on the road in places like dallas but this sunday the eagles will

play in a soccer stadium. >> i haven't played in a 20,000 venue since probably high school, right. so, i know in texas we had 111. so, it's been awhile. >> reporter: the chargers temporary home at the home depot center holds only 30,000 max. they've also yet to win a game. they're o and three but two of the chargers three losses came by three points or less. >> a different venue than most teams in the nfl. but i think the biggest thing we're focused on this week is this team's o and three, but if you watch the tape and you look at the talent that they have, that's a very good defense. >> reporter: normally for a west coast trip the birds would be gone already but they're going to leave tomorrow morning. doug pederson says he's done a lot of research on the subject. >> by leaving saturday and then keeping everything on an east coast schedule, body, the whole thing when we get out there, is the most beneficial. earlier curfew, thing of that nature to make sure that the guys are fresh for sunday at 1:00.

>> meteorologist adam joseph here to talk about a little cooling off period for some. >> yeah a-temporary cool down and then the summer heat will return by the end of that seven day. it's just so stubborn. won't let go. a beautiful shot here from our sky6 live in chester there of the home of the philadelphia union, the talon energy stadium where the union will be playing in town on sunday and it will be very similar to today with that deep blue sky, that cool breeze and really comfy temperatures. right now 70 degrees philadelphia, wilmington, 68 allentown and trenton. 69 degrees in millville. we topped off at 71 in philadelphia today but now that the sun is getting lower and about to set in the next 20 to 25 minutes these numbers will fall pretty quickly. in fact as we take a look at the next eight hours that 68 is replaced by low 60's as we get into that 9, 10 o'clock

hour and then upper 50's by about 2 o'clock in the morning. it is friday night, so some folks will be strolling home at that hour; a little bit on the chilly side. as we take a look at the calendar for the month here as we round out september, it started one way and is ending the complete opposite. we started with temps i think it was close to five and a half or 6 degrees below normal from the first to about the 13th, 14th. then once the 14th hit, we had 15 straight days in a row where afternoon highs were above normal and that flipped everything around here so, what was thought to be a cool month turned out normal. tomorrow will be slightly below average. satellite and radar to the north and west we're watching a cold front. most of these showers will fall apart but a couple could survive towards allentown, poconos around 11 o'clock tonight but as this low swings through here early tomorrow into the afternoon hours, that will erupt quite a bit of cloud cover to begin the

weekend. but for tonight stars, clouds, there could be that isolated shower to the north and west, 49 allentown, 56 by the morning in philadelphia, 53 millville, 55 down in dover where nascar is in town. saturday, though as that low continues to depart, that high pressure still a little too far to the west to give us a bright sunny day. you'll notice a lot of clouds trying to take over the sky at times. winds gusting to 25 and with the clouds and the combo of that wind the high is going to be pretty chilly at 67 degrees but then goodbye to the low. hello to the high. on sunday so we are sun soaked and seasonable, temperatures back to 71 so again, sunday very similar to what we experienced today. if you're still expected to head down to dover or if you're in that area for nascar, saturday breezy and cool, 67 degrees but shouldn't be any interruption with the rain for tomorrow and then a sun filled sky on sunday with your temps a little warmer at 70. the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, pretty decent seven day here if you like fall. you get the first few days.

if you like summer, you get the last few days of the seven-day here. but again, sunshine dominating almost every day with the exception of saturday and next friday temperatures stay below normal, going into sunday and then back above normal monday, tuesday, 76 degrees. even warmer come wednesday of 79. and low 80's are back on thursday and then a lot of clouds friday, some sun, temperatures slip a little to 78 with maybe some late day showers but despite that is a beautiful forecast and you don't want to complain about it -- >> right. >> we do desperately need some rain but not the next seven days. >> thank you so much adam. survivors of fallen heroes from around the delaware valley are gathering in new jersey this week. it is the 18th annual midatlantic police and fire survivors weekend in north wildwood. the philadelphia boat team escorted the ceremonial wreath to honor all the first responders who died in the line of duty. the event brings together families from fallen colleagues from as far away as
