"action news," delaware valley's leading news program, with jim gardner. ♪ >> an inferno destroys a condo complex in lakewood ocean county. several people were hurt including first responders who rush to rescue residents. jim is off, i'm monica malpass.

the big story is a destructive blaze that tore through a three story building at covington village. jeff chirico is there live tonight. jeff? >> monica, in all nine people were hospitalized. eight of them are first responders. we are told none of their injuries appear to be life threatening. fire crews are wrapped up at the scene with you you ca but you ce that left 37 people homeless tonight. >> it was an emotional night as family members reunited with loved ones chased from their homes by fire. chopper 6 shows the fire ripping through the fire at this condo building, at a 55 and over community. >> it was black smoke and then within ten minutes, the flames were just shooting up.

>> joe heard a neighbor yelling and escaped his first floor condo with little more than what he was wearing. >> he said there's a fire in the back of the building. i grabbed my wife and we took off. >> crews searched all 3 30 unit. two police officers rescued a resident and all three were hoppizehophospitalized for smoke inhalation. they say this could have been worse. >> it's lucky it didn't happen in the middle of the night when everyone was sleeping. >> red cross met with most of the 3 37 displaced by fire. >> building manager marion

somato says she has lost almost everything but isn't giving up. >> we are strong. we'll rebuild. >> the mayor says all of the first responders have been released from the hospital but the resident will spend the night at the hospital. the ocean county prosecutor's office and fire marshall are investigating. so far a cause has not been released. jeff chirico, channel6 "action news." >> thank you, jeff. a six-year-old was rushed to the hospital after being shot in north philadelphia tonight. the boy was shot in the shoulder. no word what led up to the shooting. >> friends and family gathered to remember joshua mitchel tonight. the 20-year-old was shot down in nono,nono,inmorrisville.

>> carpenter was arrested and held without bail. >> now to the ongoing crisis in puerto rico. a three star general on the ground saying more help is needed. folks are waiting in long lines for food, gas even money. president trump will survey the damage himself tuesday, he tweeted big decisions will have to be made on the cost of rebuilding. dann cuellar is live in puerto rico. with all of the destruction, crews are having a tough time getting supplies to the victims that need them most, aren't they ithey? >> that's right, monica. that noise is a generator being used to power and give lighting to the sky rise behind me. power generators are a way of life and the people of puerto

and monument at the gate to the field. he was killed serving our country in iraq in 2014. >> along with his sister lauren, the family was honored by so many in the town dedicating the field, mark ryan field. this is where he grew up playing. his brother explains why he was captain his senior year. >> he loved to play the game. >> a flagpole was to honor him as well. his family says mark lived to inspire ore others always. >> everything i do i try to remind myself, he wanted you to be happy and proud and do the best you could in life. >> they say the city has inspired them again. >> this is awesome. they have done so much for my son and his remembrance. >> just keeping his memory

looking for two robbers that left their victims bloody this morning. surveillance video shows the crime in progress at fisher auto in eastlands down 7:20 this morning. despite complying, the victims were pistol whipped and the robbers ran away with the cash. it took 60 years but a man has his wallet back. he got his property returned to him. it was stolen when his house was robbed in 1957. stacey and bob found the wallet tearing down a wall in their house. he said it took a minute for that to sink in. >> strange guy asking me questions. i think i'm getting scammed. then he says basically, i think

it's been on the decline with the closing of the refineries and there's no jobs in the community. if there's no jobs, there's no education, there's no food on the table. what's important is the children. steve sweeney... he fought for 'em. this is where he's from. steve sweeney's been here since the beginning. steve spearheaded the whole project and really brought it to fruition. it would've never been done without steve. it was a pride in building this port and then knowing that we're coming back.
