there will be hours of surveillance we'll have to recall. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> the fusion center? >> reporter: correct. there are cameras everywhere. how could this happen? >> well, i don't understand what you're alluding to. how could it happen? this was an individual described as a lone wolf. i don't know how it could have been prevented if we didn't have prior knowledge to this individual. it wasn't evident he had weapons in his room. we determined there has been employees going to and fro from his room. nothing nefarious was noted. that's what we know now. >> reporter: first responders were integral.

>> you're correct. it's required to supply police officers to insure security. the mandalay bay did a great job of hiring police officers. they had sufficient staffing for the concert. when this individual decided to fire upon the crowd which was approximately 22,000 individuals it's very difficult to manage that side crowd. you have to insure you have the proper staffing. as described our officers responded immediately in conjunction with the fire department. as soon as the fire department arrived, they were able to identify where the weapon was being discharged from in proximity. it's hard to tell what floor from the outside. once they gained entry into the hotel in conjunction with security and through phone calls they were able to get it down to a possible floor. once they made entry on to the

holloway they immediately knew what room. >> reporter: there were reports when s.w.a.t. entered maybe there was smoke alarm from the shells. is there any truth to that? >> i don't know about smoke alarms. i know he killed himself. we'll have to go through our body worn camera and existing video whether we engaged him at the same time or not. >> reporter: you said you didn't believe -- do you have any motive? >> no ma'am. i can't get into the mind of a psycho path. >> reporter: how extensive is the sight of the shooting and will it be shut down while the criminal ises do their work?

>> we have most of the boulevard open. adjacent to the mandalay remains closed. we're looking at a minimum of 12 additional hours for documentation of the crime scene and the removal of the bodies. >> reporter: do you know how long he was able to shoot for and do you know if there was ever any return fire from officers on the ground? >> no i'm not aware of return fire nor the timeline. we had s.w.a.t. officers dislodge weapons. >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> the fbi and atf is helping us with that aspect. >> reporter: the injured or deceased come from the hotel or were they all from the concert? >> i'm not sure. we had people that were deceased

the massacre is now the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. investigators belief a lone gunman 64-year-old stephen paddock sprayed bullets down below onto innocent concertgoers about a block away. authorities say paddock then took his own life before a s.w.a.t. team broke down the door of his hotel room. at this hour investigators are still searching for a motive for the killings. for the very latest let's go to abc's donya bacchus from las vegas. [gunfire] >> reporter: terrifying gunfire on what started as a peaceful night at the country music on the vegas strip. >> i heard it boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: blasts of automatic gunfire on concertgoers enjoying the festival with jason aldean. >> people started dropping around us. a lot of dead bodies. a lot of people were piling on

top of whoever. >> reporter: a high wall enclosing part of the concert venue. >> there was no encase. we were just penned inism it was. it was a kill box. >> reporter: so many shot and wounded. >> a gentleman was shot. he said could you help me. i had six people in my car, people without shoes. >> reporter: police jumping into action. >> one police officer he just was so brave. he was like jumping over the fence like to go -- to go fight this like to take on this guy. >> reporter: police say the gunman 64-year-old stephen paddock sprayed bullets from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel. s.w.a.t. teams racing there to breach paddock's hotel room with explosive devices. >> breach, breach, breach. >> reporter: authorities say he was already dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. >> the number of people that have died associated with this event has increased. right now we're using the number of 58. >> reporter: president trump

"action news" reporter katherine scott is live in our satellite center with more on those terrifying close encounters. >> reporter: witnesses have described the fear panic and confusion in the minutes and even hours that followed. las vegas is a popular tourist destination including for people in our area. >> none of us really knew where to go. >> reporter: katie and her husband were at the music festival. they had traveled to las vegas just to see it. she shot this video on her cell phone as country star jason aldean was on the stage not long before a lone gunman opened fire on the concertgoers from the 32nd

floor of the mandalay bay resort and casino. >> you look up to the sky and someone is shooting off fireworks, you know, and then it was just rapid fire after that. [gunfire] >> reporter: she describes the panic as people fled kicking over security fences and searching for places to hide. >> it was chaos. mass panic, chaos. people running and falling. >> reporter: elsewhere along the las vegas strip people started to learn that something was very wrong. >> as we kept walking, we would see more police cars, a few ambulance cars. >> reporter: christian of south philadelphia is in las vegas with friends. someone called him to alert him of the shooting but he says at that point details were vague as the group approached their hotel they saw an outdoor television and learned more. that's when people started running. >> i guess when a few people started running other people saw that and they started running and everyone decided to start running into the casinos to get off the strip.

>> reporter: they followed the crowd into caesar's and hid. >> as you get into caesar's all the patrons and everyone in there security at that point was outside trying to hold people from going in or out but i guess a whole rush of people went into the hotel on the gaming floor. at that time everyone on the gaming floor kind of just ducked down, tables were flying, chips were flying. >> reporter: christian says afterwards, he made his way up to his hotel room. he says caesar's was on lockdown so that's where he remained for hours. live from the satellite center katherine scott, channel6 "action news. rick. >> our team coverage continues at philadelphia international airport where "action news" reporter jeanette reyes has reaction from passengers arriving today on flights from las vegas. jeanette. >> reporter: well, rick, dozens of passengers arrived from the mccarran international airport in vegas which isn't far from the site of the deadly shooting. you can spot some of the

passengers from quite a distance away. they still have shock on their faces as they learned of what happened back in vegas. >> i don't understand what people are thinking nowadays, you know. it's ridiculous. >> reporter: alicia burns was shaken as she shared she had just driven by the route 91 harvest music festival grounds hours before it would become the site of the deadliest u.s. shooting. >> i was minutes away. the airport is in such close proximity to the mandalay bay and other casinos. >> reporter: she and other passengers landed at philadelphia international airport this morning all departed from the mccarran international airport in vegas where flights were immediately halted following this shooting. >> we were on the plane just getting ready to push back and then somebody came on and, you know, told the pilot i guess what was going on and, you know, they said that we had to wait because, you know, i guess the hotel where it was happening was not too far from the airport and they didn't want anybody taking off or

landing. >> reporter: planes that had already taken off were forced to urn the around. >> a plane that had taken off a half hour before ours but they made the plane turn around and land even though they were up in the air when the shooting occurred. >> reporter: most of the passengers learned just how deadly this shooting was upon landing. >> to find out something like this happened, you know, it's kind of horrifying. we're glad that we were on the plane when it did take place. >> to get on the plane and for this to occur, you know, it's unreal how close, you know, you are to death's door. >> reporter: and one passenger we spoke to who didn't want go oh on camera says he remembers vividly the crowd on the excitement some of these concertgoers had on their faces and of course this all happened just before this tragedy struck that no one saw coming. reporting live at philadelphia international airport, jeanette reyes channel6 "action news." rick. >> jeanette, thank you. all morning long we've been seeing and hearing the tragedy play out firsthand from people who were at the
