now authorities say the 64-year-old paddock set up inside of a room on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay casino hotel. he was looking straight across the street and where the route 91 harvest festival was going on. authorities i was paddock used a hammer of sorts to bust out the window of his room so he could shoot down into the crowd. they say they found at least 19 rifles and handguns in his hotel room. once they breached the door and found him dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. >> mandalay bay. upstairs mandalay bay halfway up i see the shots cupping from mandalay bay, halfway up. >> las vegas police and s.w.a.t. were on the scene within minutes of the first shots. this recordings just -- show just how frantic it was. >> active shooter. multiple casualties.

>> investigators say that many more people would have died had it not been for the quick actions of police officers. >> now, in those frantic moments as scores of people race from the concert finding any safe place to how wide was the first thing on their minds. this video was taken by a woman who found shelter inside the tropicana hotel along with dozens of other people. visitors of other hotels were also told to shelter-in-place for several hours amid false reports of other shooters and suspicious devices in the area. >> we have live team coverage tonight. "action news" reporter vernon odom has more on what philadelphia is doing to protect so-called soft targets. >> but first we begin with bob brooks live in our satellite center with the latest on the investigation into this mass shooting. bob, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, monica and rick. as you said this shooter supposedly acted alone. authorities calling this a lone wolf attack and they also say that this was very well planned. that when they went into that hotel room they found a cache of almost 20 weapons.

when they first heard the gunfire, many of the concertgoers admit they didn't react. >> we refused to believe that it was a shooting. >> reporter: it wasn't until it became rampant and people started to fall that the 22,000 in attendance began the frantic attempts to escape. >> the shots just kept coming and so we were going down and when we got down, there was a man that was shot right there, they were trying to take him out, he was all bloody and he was unconscious. >> there was short breaks in between the shots but it literally felt like it just continued for 20 minutes straight. >> reporter: the man accused of the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history is 64-year-old stephen paddock. police say he checked into the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort overlooking the country music festival on thursday. the distance between the two about a quarter mile. he knocked out the hotel windows and began firing. as of now the death toll stands at 58. but with more than 500

questions federal authorities are still trying to answer tonight, who was the shooter, stephen paddock. his brother eric paddock lives in orlando florida and he spoke to the news media today and says he's equally shocked about what happened. >> i have nothing for you. i mean, i hope someone finds out -- figures out because i -- we'd like to know. >> stephen paddock was a retired accountant who often played video poker. his brother told reporters he last received a text from him last month asking him how their mother was and if they had power. >> well, this outdoor concert was in an open area next to the famed las vegas strip. there was security at the actual event but no system in place for really any way to secure areas outside the performance field around this so-called soft targets. >> with so many outdoor events in philadelphia like the one we saw in las vegas what can authorities do to keep

"action news" reporter vernon odom is live in front of the art museum tonight with more on that. vernon. >> reporter: good evening, rick, and to you monica. obviously philadelphia's police are studying the developments in the investigation out in las vegas very, very closely. we have been talking to them all day. activities here on the ben franklin parkway frequently in the sight of high-rises compel them to study and tenaciously adjust to an increasingly dangerous world. [gunfire] >> get down. >> reporter: last night's massacre in las vegas hits close to home for philadelphia police because they must secure the ben franklin parkway many times a year for various mass turnout events, made in america, welcome america, the nfl draft which the city hopes to bring back. they've got to constantly rethink it. >> we also are compelled to do things that we can't talk about where we are putting people in places that you

don't see or we're monitoring situation that you wouldn't think we would monitor. >> i'm lost for words to say how we can prevent this other than keeping these kinds of weapons out of crazy people's hands. >> reporter: las vegas massacre and the growing list of all those that preceded it has been has the mayor and other gun control advocates crying out for washington to act. >> after sandy hook i swore something was going to get done and when it didn't happen after sandy hook i don't know if it's ever going to happen. i guess this is just the new normal now. >> reporter: late today a member of the police department's top brass held a briefing with the local media hoping to settle nerves here in the wake of vegas. >> this is always evolving so we have to -- we can't just say this is the way we do business and it's always going to work. we got to look at the way we do business every day. >> to be looking maybe in windows that you never looked in before because previously it wouldn't have been uncommon as a result of some things we've had happen to be looking on rooftops but who's thinking about looking inside of a room itself.

green park at meetinghouse lane just 7 miles per hour there as you come off of the northbound side of the blue route, 476. elsewhere on 476, the northeast extension, the news is a little bit better. sounds like a southbound crash about 4 miles south of lehigh valley is now pushed off to the side. we're still dealing with some residual delays coming down from the lehigh valley interchange, but luckily traffic can get by now headed down toward quakertown. just expect some slowing. we have a couple issues this afternoon along 13 in new castle county. one was a crash at 13 and 273 by the burger king and the mickey d's. that's cleared out but farther south in odessa no southbound traffic is getting through because of a truck accident at hyatt's corner road. we'll check it again, rick and monica, coming up in the next half hour. >> thank you so much, matt. our coverage of the mass shooting in las vegas continues for you. coming up the images and stories emerging from those who lived through the tragedy are difficult for adults to process, much less children.

selection started today in the trial of a delaware county man accused of committing war crimes. 51-year-old mohammed was arrested last year in east lansdowne. he's charged with fraud for allegedly lying on his immigration forms while seeking asylum. prosecutors say he ordered brutal crimes as a member of a liberian rebel group in west africa. the u.s. does not have jurisdiction to bring genocide charges. fire damaged a closed down motel in atlantic city overnight. the plays was the second in a month at the bayview inn here in the 1600 block of albany avenue. the molt tell wall -- motel was shuttered in august after an alligator was found in the pool. the official cause still being determined. we're told there were obvious signs of squatters in that building.

>> facebook is hiring 1,000 workers to review ads placed on its site specifically political ads. today the social media giant gave congress copies of 3,000 russian ads put on facebook ahead of the 2016 presidential election. many of the ads did not mention a candidate but rather, worked to stir political beliefs. facebook says feature ads will be more thoroughly vetted

coming to a close. a barrage of rapid gunfire rained down from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel overlooking that concert. the 22,000 people below were caught uncertain where the shots were coming from and unable to escape. police broke into the room of the accused shooter, 64-year-old stephen paddock. he had apparently taken his own life after causing such carnage. and now the focus as they interview the people who knew stephen paddock and relatives of his becomes the ever present question, why. why would someone do something so heinous. abc's lana zak live in las vegas for us tonight with much more on that. good evening, lana. >> reporter: hello there. right there on las vegas strip, thousands of people had gathered expecting an evening of music and relaxation, some even bringing their children. while on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel, a killer was waiting. says he ran to the front and laid face down. >> pulling people down because i -- i think a lot of folks didn't realize at that point that the shooting was taking place. they were still sitting up. i saw like six young women, they were maybe 20, 22, they were all crying on the ground. and i was trying to be calm. >> claypool says the day before the shooting he was staying in the same hotel as the accused shooter. he thought about leaving town to get home to his daughter but decided to stay because he looked down on the concert venue thinking what a beautiful sight it was. hours later of course it became a sight of unspeakable carnage. >> there are dozens of stories of ordinary people becoming everyday heroes to help those in need in las vegas last night. some shielded others from the gunfire, others tried to get the wounded to safety. an off duty nurse says every time there was a break in the gunfire she and others went

back trying to help. >> there was so many people just normal citizens, doctors, cops, paramedics, like nurses, just off duty and everyone was communicating and working together. you got this person, you got this person, you got this person. it was -- it was completely horrible but it was absolutely amaze to see all those people come together. >> she said sadly so many of the victims were young people and some couldn't be saved but that group effort did manage to save others. meanwhile thousands of nevada residents became life savers today by rolling up their sleeves. when officials called for blood donations to help the 500 people injured and to refill the local blood banks people began lining up. at times today there's been a five hour wait outside of the blood bank but donors are not giving up. >> of course one of the prime questions is the type of weapons that the las vegas gunman used, how did he make those weapons so deadly like

"action news" reporter john rawlins is live at a gun range in spring garden with much more on that for us tonight. good evening, john. >> reporter: good evening, monica. well, presumably the investigators will release specific information on those specific weapons that were used whether they were semi automatic weapons or as some have speculated in at least one case possibly a fully automatic machine gun and whether or not those weapons were obtained legally or not. until then all anyone can do is wait and speculate. you're resaltzman is a firearms instructor and operator of a gun range in center city. we asked him about the speculation that given the steady stream of gunfire heard during last night's attack that at least one of the weapons fired was a fully automatic machine gun. saltzman's response. >> sounded to me as though it was a sustained rhythmic fire which would mean possibly i mean we're speculating here, that there could have been a fully automatic gun but the

problem with that is is that the gun fired at a very slow rate. >> reporter: to his practiced here slow enough that he thinks it's not a fully automatic machine gun but more likely a semi automatic weapon enhanced to fire at a faster rate. these internet videos from several firms feature replacement trigger assemblies and stocks that use a gun's recoil to legally increase the rate of fire of a semi automatic weapon. >> it could increase the rate of fire from what is normal with, you know, a fast finger to maybe something that's a little bit faster than that. but the full auto fire is a lot faster i mean we're talking 800 shots per minute. >> reporter: whatever weapons were used, the results were deadly. >> it's beyond me how a person who walks amongst others can do this. >> reporter: but someone

hundreds more injured. monday night, jim is on assignment, i'm monica malpass and the big story on "action news" tonight is the deadliest mass shooting in american history. the gunman took aim at that crowd below from his hotel room in the mandalay bay casino and resort last night. at least 58 people were killed and more than 500 others hurt. the shooter is this man, 64-year-old stephen paddock a nevada resident. authorities say paddock ended up taking his own life. police have yet to determine a motive. despite a claim of responsibility from isis the fbi in fact said paddock had no connection to any international terrorist groups [bell tolls] at the white house this afternoon, that bell tolled three times honoring the victims of the mass shooting. president donald trump was joined by the first
