hundreds more injured. monday night, jim is on assignment, i'm monica malpass and the big story on "action news" tonight is the deadliest mass shooting in american history. the gunman took aim at that crowd below from his hotel room in the mandalay bay casino and resort last night. at least 58 people were killed and more than 500 others hurt. the shooter is this man, 64-year-old stephen paddock a nevada resident. authorities say paddock ended up taking his own life. police have yet to determine a motive. despite a claim of responsibility from isis the fbi in fact said paddock had no connection to any international terrorist groups [bell tolls] at the white house this afternoon, that bell tolled three times honoring the victims of the mass shooting. president donald trump was joined by the first lady, vice

president mike pence and his wife karen, all for a moment of silence on the south lawn. trump will now travel to las vegas on wednesday. the president spoke to the nation this morning calling the shooting an act of pure evil. and saying the nation must stay unified. >> our unity cannot be shattered by evil. our bonds cannot be broken by violence and though we feel such great anger at the senseless murder of our fellow citizens it is our love that defines us today. >> we want to take you live to a news conference right now happening in las vegas with the sheriff and the mayor. let's listen in. >> standing behind me they are going the make some comments associated with today's events so, there's two things we're attempting to achieve. one is we have to finish processing the scenes. we have three separate scenes we are working now actually it will be four at this point. so, we have the 32nd floor the room at the mandalay bay.

we have the event location, the house in mesquite and then now we have s.w.a.t. standing by getting ready to hit the house in northern nevada. at this point we did in the last briefing, i was unable to tell you what we retrieved from the house in mesquite. we retrieved in excess -- how many firearms was it? >> 18. >> in excess of 18 additional firearms. some explosives and several thousand rounds of ammo willing with some electronic devices that we are evaluating at this point. i mentioned that s.w.a.t. is about to breach the house up in northern nevada and then i'm going to give you an update on the casualty numbers. we are currently standing at 527 for individuals injured. and individuals that have died or passed away, 59. so, what we are doing at this point we have several people calling about personal items

located at the stadium. we are not done processing that scene yet and once we are done processing the scene, we will make arrangements for people that attended the stadium that believe they are personal items there to respond to the area and we will help you retrieve your items. at this point i want to bring greg castle forward from the county fire department and he will give you an update on the family resource center. prior to that, i think it's important for and i appreciate -- >> you have been listening to the sheriff joe lombardo give an update on the tragic consequences. unfortunately we have a new number of deceased it is now 59. we have team coverage for you. nora muchanic and walter perez spoke with witnesses of the horrific events in las vegas. health reporter and registered nurse ali gorman spoke to an expert about how to talk to your children about the tragedy. but first let's go to "action news" reporter bob brooks live in the satellite center with the latest on the

investigation. good evening, bob. >> reporter: good evening, monica. so unfortunate we heard the sheriff in say -- in las vegas say a 59th person has died. they say he was planning the attack for many days. it was a country music festival. jason aldean the final act on stage. witness say the initial sounds of the gunfire sounded like part of the show. >> we refused to believe what i it was a shooting. >> reporter: it turned into chaos. 22,000 concertgoers trying to escape all at once and while others around them were being killed. >> it was a man that was shot right there, they were trying to take him out. he was all bloody and he was unconscious. >> reporter: 58 people are confirmed dead with more than 500 injured. police didn't take long in finding the shooter. they say he is 64-year-old stephen paddock and that he shot himself before s.w.a.t. teams got into the room. and police say he checked into the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort overlooking the

festival. the distance between the two, about a quarter mile. he knocked out the hotel windows and began firing. >> this is asteroid fell out of the sky. >> reporter: that's paddock's brother. he says this was totally unexpected. the 64 worked as an accountant and was living in a retirement community in mesquite nevada northeast of. >> there's no political, there's no religious, there's no any of that stuff. >> reporter: we also know this was well planned. investigators say they found almost a dozen weapons inside the hotel room. they say paddock built platforms by the windows so he could better shoot into the crowd. now his family also said paddock liked to gamble, that's why he was in vegas. now again that number 500 injured, the people who have passed away may go up but we certainly hope and pray that it doesn't. for now reporting live in the satellite center bob brooks channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you bob. now to nora muchanic live in our new jersey news room. nora you spoke with some folks from the delaware valley who were caught up in that chaos last night. >> reporter: i did, monica,

they were and they say they were scared to death. bullets were flying everywhere and there was mass confusion and they said they took off running. >> pow pow pow pow so fast. >> reporter: katie and bob fuhrmeister were in that crowd when the gunfire erupted and they ran for their lives with thousands of others. >> you know, the whole place that -- there was noplace that we were able to hide or, you know, get down. even people that got down, you know, were getting shot and hurt, trampled on. >> slipping, falling, just everybody was just fighting to get out the same entranceway. >> reporter: i spoke with the parents from their hotel room. katie hurt her ankle in the chaos as they ran from the gunfire. >> there are people out there who lost their lives or are hurt, you know, there's -- i'm just thankful that we're alive and we get to go home and see our kids. >> we heard the police officers shouting, you know,

32nd floor, 32nd floor. >> reporter: unaway of the blood bath outside the head of new jersey's union. s.w.a.t. team swarmed the lobby. he snapped the photo of the shooter's room this morning. >> a couple stories buffer i don't know maybe eight or 10 rooms over. if i was 15 minutes earlier i would have been in the room when the shooting started. >> reporter: philadelphia native virginia mcdo you nell vegas for a gaming convention said she returned to the tropicana after dinner to find chaos. >> shooting victims, people with shrapnel in their arms and a haunting young woman covered in blood. >> she looked at me and she goes it's not my blood it's my husbands. she said he was shot standing right next to me. >> reporter: that woman's husband was put in an ambulance and taken away hopefully by now she's found him and he's survived. live in our new jersey news room, i'm nora muchanic channel6 "action news." >> thank you so much nora. walter perez now live at philadelphia international airport where travelers coming from las vegas have been sharing their stories about that tragedy. walter. >> reporter: that's right, monica. we spoke with two people from the delaware valley who were there and witnessed what happened and as you would imagine their stories are heart stopping. steve gold of wilmington says it was like something out of a horror movie. >> i could see people running, you know, bleeding and some people just had blood everywhere. i don't think -- sometimes it was people trying to pick people up and they get bloody from that. >> reporter: he says during the chaos people started climbing or tearing down sections of the fence that surrounded the festival grounds but steve says even as he fled for his life, he took a moment to contact loved ones realizing they would soon hear about the attack knowing he was there. >> i actually called my mom while shots were being fired told her i loved her and told her i'm going to run, i'll be okay. >> reporter: he admits though he didn't feel safe until he made it inside a nearby casino. there he met with other

survivors desperately trying to contact loved ones whom they lost during the panic. >> there's people just sitting on the casino floor and some of them were crying. this lady next to me she goes i know my boyfriend's dead, i just know it. he didn't make it. >> reporter: megan was also in vegas with friends enjoying the concert when the gunman opened fire. megan says there is no way to describe the feeling when your instinct to survive kicks in. >> like we were running out of the fence and it was still going on like the gun shots, like a machine gun shots behind you. it was like a terrifying feeling to be running backwards like away from shots right behind you. >> reporter: both megan and steve say they're grateful to be alive and safe but their hearts are broken for the victims. >> just sometimes you just start crying, you know, why did this happen? >> reporter: by the way, megan is a mother of two and we asked her husband if he thinks she'll ever go back to las vegas and he said not

about what happened. same goes for vonda kenner. she doesn't want to scare her youngest maxwell. >> i want him to still be a kid and be able to enjoy him. i want him to be able to go up those stairs and not be scared. >> school psychologist jessica kandorski says for young kids under second grade it's best to shield them from upsetting news but for older school aged kids that can be tough. >> so, when my kids get home i'm going to say did you hear about anything today? is anything going on? >> that way you can clear up misinformation. she says stick to the facts when telling kids what happened. >> be direct about what happened, tell the truth and if they say could this happen here, it could, but it's very rare. >> and reassure them they're safe. also for teenagers on social media encourage them to focus on the positives, the first responders, the acts of heroism. it's also a good time to remind older kids to be aware of their surroundings. the doctor says along with

and it just flooded in a sea of green and it was great to see all game long, they were loud, they were noisy. >> felt like a home game, that's what it was. so, it was awesome. you know, stadium wasn't big but our fans took over and motivated us so, you know, they're as loyal as can be. >> the run game was a huge factor in the outcome. the birds rushed for 214 yards. legarrette blount turned out 68 of them on this spectacular run in the fourth quarter. blount finished with 136 yards on the ground. after the game the common refrain was blount was running angry. >> it's all about confidence, running hard. great guys having your back. all -- all 11 guys doing their jobs. >> we fuel off that emotion when he's making guys miss. any time you have those big plays we just use that energy and it fuels us. >> eagles home with arizona next week. puck about to drop on the

flyers season. they left for the west coast earlier today. before they did the team held a luncheon at the chop house in gibbsboro new jersey. at this time of year all the questions surround expectations and for the flyers it's all about one thing, a shiny thing. >> expectations for our season make a run. i mean, you know, been too long we were saying make the playoffs. it's nice to make the playoffs but when you make the playoffs you got to try to make it all the way so we definitely do -- going to do everything we can in our power to make a run at it. >> the phillies went out on a high note yesterday. granted there can't be too many high notes in a 66 win season but this team showed some promise especially in the second half. phillies went 37-37 since the all-star break. the phils crushed the mets yesterday 11-nothing. they banged out 11 hits. one was maikel franco's 24th homer. homered in three straight games. now the players will go their separate ways with a hopeful eye for the future.

the sun officially setting at 6:42. you can see plenty of blue skies. you can see the sun actually reflecting off the buildings and we'll see plenty of sunshine as we head through the week and temperatures really going up. so, the accuweather highlights show you tomorrow another fall beauty. kind of a carbon copy of today but then winds really increase out of the southwest so by later in the week, temperatures rising up into the 80's. we really could use some rain but we only have a minimal chance of some showers as we head toward the latter part of the week and the weekend. temperatures right now very comfortable. philadelphia 73. down from our high of 75. allentown and reading 72. trenton 71. atlantic city airport currently 66 degrees. so, satellite and radar showing a dominant feature for our weather this week is a very broad area of high pressure. so, what this does, it provides substenance, sinking air. it kind of squeezes out all the moisture from the atmosphere. today dewpoints in the 60's,

very dry and this will edge a little bit farther to the east bring us that return flow out of the southwest and that is what will bring us a big time warmup for the second half of the week. tonight though clear and calm and seasonably cool, not quite as cool as the past couple of nights. philadelphia 54. allentown 43. cape may 56 and wilmington 51. tomorrow with this high pressure in control, wall to wall sunshine, blue skies like today. winds pretty light out of the east-southeast. the high matching today's high of 75 degrees. by wednesday, though, this is when this high pressure kind of expands down to the south we get more of some southwesterly flow, 78 degrees and this front looks like it will likely be hung up so as long as it stays away from us we get that heat pump with temperatures in the 80's, thursday right into the weekend with again a minimal chance of showers. so, if you like things warm, we'll likely stay that way for much of the year, the october outlook showing a big trough out to the west with below

normal temperatures. they're getting snow in parts of the rockies today. but as far as us, greatest chance of above normal temperatures right over our region for really most of the month and the seven-day forecast looks like that for the first week of october. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast, it's sunny, low humidity tomorrow, temperatures again slightly above normal with a high of 75 degrees. wednesday bump it up to 78. thursday feeling like summer, 84 degrees mix of clouds and sunshine. could get a sprinkle on thursday night and friday as long as that front stays away from us, it's partly sunny, still warm, 82 degrees. saturday 80 degrees, slight chance of a morning shower and sunday for the eagles, dress for summer. temperatures running 15 degrees above normal, 84 degrees and monday increasing clouds with a possibility of some showers and a high of 79 degrees. so, summer is not giving up quite yet without a fight. >> thank you cecily. finally tonight members of the camden fire department are
