alone and as they work to learn more about him and why he did this, the focus for so many people who are mourning today is solely on all of those lives lost. in prayer and through tears, the victims honored overnight. >> it's okay to mourn those who you loved. >> reporter: chris roible, hanna allers, a las vegas police officer. >> one of my officers was off duty attending the concert and lost his life. >> reporter: special education teacher sandy casey and stephen paddock breaking the windows of his room on the 32nd floor floor of the mandalay bay casino and shooting into the crowd below before killing himself. >> we've got the east room secure. we've got one suspect down. multiple firearms. >> reporter: two dozen firearms

included an assault rifle modified to fire like an automatic weapon machine gun. 19 more fireairports and ammunition also found at his home in mesquite, nevada. neighbors and his brothers dumbfounded. >> steve had nothing to do with any political organization, religious organization, no white supremacist, nothing. >> reporter: police say several pieces of media were found in the hotel room including a source says a video camera. investigators hoping that evidence could offer some insight into the motive for the massacre that left more than 500 people injured. >> i was carrying -- whether they were dead or alive as many people as i possibly could. >> reporter: the outpouring of love and people waiting in line for hours to donate blood. people from across the country donated more than $2 million to help the survivors and the victims' families. kendis and diane. >> marci, thank you. overnight we heard from jason

aldean, the country music star on stage during that shooting. he posted a message on instagram this morning saying over the last 24 hours i have gone through lots of emotions, scared, anger, heartache, compassion, something has changed in this country. time to come together and stop the hate. overnight we've been learning much more about the victims of this attack as well. >> several of their stories are starting to emerge this monk. one victim, 29-year-old sonny melton from tennessee taking a bullet in the back while protecting his wife. >> we heard that he shielded her from the bullets and that was the type of person he was. he would be a selfless person that would sacrifice his safety for someone else's and very much sounds in character to him. chris roibl, the military veteran surviving a tour in afghanistan celebrating his 29th birthday at the concert with his mom. they became separated amid the chaos.

>> i knew. i knew because i spoke to the person who was can him when he got shot. he said he got shot in the chest. he saw christopher take his last breath. >> reporter: rachael parker being remembered, a special education teacher, an employee with the manhattan beach, california, police department. friends calling her energy infectious. >> she was bubbly. she was enthusiastic. she was giving. >> reporter: sandy casey was also a familiar face around manhattan beach. the middle school teacher of nine years was at the concert with six other colleagues. >> it was painful. there's a lot of pain on the campus. it's a very difficult day in our district. >> reporter: hanna allers survived by three young children. her family describing her as loving, caring and a devoted mother. denise burditus of west virginia, her husband writing on facebook i lost my wife of 32

year, a mother of two, soon-to-be a grandmother of five. denise passed in my arms and carey barnett, the 34-year-old worked at disney california adventure. so many lives lost there, but we also have to remember the 527 people who were injured. many of them with very severe injuries, as well. and the response from people in las vegas has been overwhelming. >> some people waited nearly five hours in line to give blood. abc's linsey davis tells us about the strain placed on hospitals. >> reporter: hundreds of victims remain at area hospitals tonight. at umc the hospital right behind me they initially admitted 104 patients and really they had the good fortune that they were able to just in recent months go through an extensive training and really we got to commend the community here. they answered the call as far as the blood shortage. at some locations there was in excess of a five-hour wait.

service. gas lines in the capital stretching for blocks. in this town, just an hour away, homes remain flooded as fema tries to unclog the drains unsure if bodies lie in the murky waters. >> we're doing disaster survivor assistance right now, the main mission. >> reporter: more than 13,000 troops and civilians handing out more than 1 million meals and 2 million liters of water but the mayor says more help is needed. >> we have no food. we have no water. >> reporter: her pleas after president trump unleashed a twitter tirade over the weekend writing, they want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. asked about those comments white house press secretary sarah sanders said that will not be the focus of the president's visit. >> i expect the focus to be on the recovery efforts, which were fully committed to. >> reporter: as the president arrives later this morning he remains steadfast. the federal response has been, quote, amazing. >> we are going to be seeing all

>> reporter: as investigators search for clues at his home in a retirement community in mesquite, nevada, the motive of 64-year-old stephen paddock seen in this photo posted on facebook by his girlfriend remains a mystery. >> we've checked all the federal databases and local databases and state databases and had no knowledge of this individual. >> reporter: the fbi says no connection either to any overseas terror group despite a claim by isis. yet for some reason this otherwise unremarkable man checked into his 32nd floor las vegas room on a well planned mission to kill assembling a remarkable arsenal. authorities hope his girlfriend, marilou danley, who once worked as a casino hostess for high-end players can provide insight. authorities say she is overseas adding to the mystery, federal officials tell abc news paddock sent tens of thousands of dollars to someone in the philippines in the last few weeks. paddock's only real passion

appears to have been gambling. his brother eric said he recently won a $40,000 jackpot. >> he played multihundred dollar a hand video poker. >> reporter: six years ago paddock sued a las vegas casino when his he slipped and fell on a casino floor. video shows him later rubbing his leg in pain. an arbitrator found in favor of the casino. the only known connection to crime was paddock's late father, a violent bank robber who spent seven years in the 1960s as an fbi fugitive described as psychopathic, suicidal, armed and dangerous. brian ross, abc news, new york. >> our thanks to brian. law enforcement officials are now rethinking their own security measures. >> already difficult to protect soft targets from the ground, but now after that las vegas shooter perched himself 32 stories up in a hotel room, authorities will now be forced to police the sky as well. >> stay up for a long time and

they can get a good view of what's going on. they will probably start putting people on the roofs to get views of those other buildings that are further away. to see if anything suspicious is going on. >> experts say we can expect to see more helicopters and drones hovering around open venues that attract thousands of people. some stories of true heroism are emerging. jonathan smith was shot in the neck while trying to lead 30 people to safety. >> doctors are leaving the bullet in his neck for now fearing removing it could cause more damage. he suffered a broken collarbone, cracked rib and bruised lung. he says he was not a hero and doing what he would want others to do for him. a similar story from mike mcgarry, he flew home to philadelphia hours after shielding his wife and strangers during the concert chaos. he says once the shooting started it was his instinct to provide text people around him.

continuing a deadly trend here in the united states. >> some of the worst in the country's history have taken place in the last ten years. abc's david wright has more. >> reporter: in las vegas, a grisly new record. >> 527 we're standing at for individuals injured and individuals that have died or passed away, 59. >> reporter: this is now the deadliest mass shooting in modern history. a record las vegas may not hold on to for long. active shooter incidents are becoming more frequent and more deadly in this country. they were relatively rare when two columbine high school students killed a dozen of their classmates and a teacher. that was in 1999. this map shows the incidents that have taken place since the year 2000. more than 230 incidents. more than 730 dead. >> people have access to guns and right now in this world there's a lot of mental health problems that people have and this is their solution in their
