central america, hurricane nate is heading toward the u.s. mainland. we have details on the damage that the storm caused as those in its path brace for impact. a crash causes power problems in a just jersey community. after the massacre in las vegas, what we're learning about the gunman. let's go outside to chris sowers, how could nate impact us, chris? >> reporter: nate could bring us beneficial rain. it will impact the gulf coast. it is becoming better organized, you can see the bright reds. a lot of red color is the higher cloud tops, the stronger thunderstorms, wrapping around the center of circulation. the storm is strengthening we have maximum stained wind up to

85 miles per hour. it's a category one storm. with the falling pressure we're seeing the huge wall of water, wave heights are approaching 20 feet in the central portions of the gulf of mexico. we have this wall of water, what we call the storm surge anywhere from five to ten feet about what is known as the high tide levels. all the water will pour into the central portions of the gufer coast states -- gulf coast states. the buoy i'm zoomed into is the gulf shores of mississippi. we're seeing waves 6 feet and gusts up to 22 miles per hour. the bulls eye in the middle of screen is moving toward the coast in the next 12 to 24 hours. maximum sustained winds 25 miles per hour. the wind field with the storm is small.

it's not as big as harvey or jose or hurricane irma it will come in west of mobile. hurricane warnings in effect through gulfport and pensacola, florida where some of the worst conditions from the hurricane are going to start being felt in the next 12 hours. heavy rain a storm surge of 5 to 10 feet above normal. winds up to 85 miles per hour. i'll be back along in just a few minutes, we'll focus on what the storm means for our weather in the delaware and lehigh valleys. heavy rain and winds. there could heavier winds. i'll have the details in the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast. >> we're hours away from when hurricane nate will make landfall as a category one storm. two dozen deaths are blamed on the storm as it barreled through central america.

states i long the coast are preparing for the worst. >> reporter: the deadly storm washed away roads and homes in central america. two dozen people across the region have lost their lives. stranded families used ropes to get out of the rushing floodwaters. there was so much moving water it opened up the giant sinkhole. the storm strengthened into a category one hurricane and speeding toward american cities on the gulf coast. this is a sedate of emergency from louisiana to georgia. thousands of families are under a mandatory evacuation this morning. >> we do not know where it will handle so we're preparing for the worst. >> reporter: in louisiana, president trump has approved the governor's predisaster emergency declaration. federal resources are available. >> no one should take the storm lightly. >> reporter: in new orleans families dealing with the waters from the high tide are frustrated that a dozen drainage

pole brought down wires and blocked the road for a time. the driver is in stable condition. utility crews were brought into to repair the pole and restore power. a big rig was involved in a crash along interstate i-95 in south philadelphia overnight. it collided with a motorcycle near the packer avenue exit in the southbound lanes. the cyclist was thrown from the bike, he was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital in stable condition. a robber shot a woman in philadelphia's mantua section. >> reporter: police say it was 8:30 p.m. when a customer went into freddie grocery to by cigarettes and realized something was wrong. >> she doesn't see the owner operator at the counter where she sits.

she looks back, the other than than -- owner is bent over and can't talk. >> reporter: she called 911 the 48-year-old owner was rushed to the presbyterian medical center. a black male in a hoodie went into rob the place. >> at some point she opens the register and a shot is fired. he critically wounds her. >> reporter: police are sorting surveillance footage to get a better description of the assail ant. >> from looking at the scene, appears that the register was opened, it doesn't appear any money was taken. this is a senseless act where a person going in here early evening hours a business half-hour before closing a 48-year-old female working by herself. he has a gun, no need to fire the gun and put this person in

this position. >> reporter: police have little description on the gunman. they are sorting through surveillance video but again he was wearing a hoodie. dann cuellar channel 6 "action news." >> happening today, vice president mike pence scheduled to visit las vegas this afternoon. the vice president expected to take part in and speak at a ceremony honoring the victims of last week's massacre. it is the first time the vice president has been to las vegas since sunday's massacre. yesterday he was in puerto rico helping with hurricane relief efforts there. the vice president's visit to las vegas comes as the investigators continue to search for evidence of a possible motive in the shooting. electronic billboards are up asking for tips about the mass murderer, stephen paddock. >> there might be some political or social reason we

have not found it yet. >> paddock on pretended to speak with others in the room so it didn't look like he was alone. they found a prescription for vallum and a note with a series of cryptic numbers inside the hotel room. president trump heading to the keystone state expected to make a case for tax reform in harrisburg on wednesday. the visit comes as president and republicans try to overhaul the nation's tax code. it will mark the president's third trip to pennsylvania since he took office in january. a change in leadership coming to new jersey, with the governor race in the home stretch, 6abc is hosting a debate with the democrat phil murphy and kim guadagno.

high clouds filtering in later today. otherwise it is very warm and sticky high of 83. tomorrow a lot more in the way of clouds, as we see the outer edges of nate move in here, showers possible, as well, 79 degrees is the forecasted high. presently in philadelphia, 70. dewpoint 65 that number right there we need to that to drop into the 50s we've -- we instead it to feel better outside. pressure is holding steady. philadelphia, 70. millville, 72. same number for atlantic city cape may, ton of sunshine you're leading the pack right now, 73 satellite and radar, the clouds increase from the west today. this is actually associated with a frontal system out here across the western portion of the great lake states and the ohio valley. these clouds increase first and

eventually some of this increases, as well as we get into the overnight hours and first thing tomorrow morning. maximum sustained winds up to 85 miles per hour. it's a category one storm sitting 341 miles south/southeast of mobile, alabama. moving north/northwest at 22 miles per hour. that's the saving grace with the storm. these storms they feed off the very warm waters of the atlantic and the gulf and the carribean. the waters here are extremely warm right now in the mid to upper 80s, close to 90. the fact that it is moving so quickly it kind of prevents the storm from feeding off all the warm water and therefore we don't expect the thing to strengthen into a huge category 3, 4 or 5. it's a category one, it's strong enough, but not the crippling blow we saw with hurricane irma and hurricane harvey and maria. it should make landfall around

midnight. remember it's the right front quadrant of the storm that's where the conditions are that would put mobile, alabama, gulf shores and that's the area that will see the storm surge. 2 to 5 inches of rain from mobile, up to knoxville. in our neck of the woods, rainfall totals one to two inches. the farther west you go, reading, allentown, lancaster, pick up 2 to 3-inch of rain. this is sunday night through monday, we see the remnant rains of nate. heaviest west of the city. we are not expecting flooding. it's going to be dry, a lot of this will seep into the ground. this is good news here. clouds and sun today, warm and sticky. 84 in reading, 83 in philadelphia. dover, 83 and 77 to 80 somewhere

on a dime. we continue to see the warm temperatures with the humidity pushing in from time to time. it's 70 degrees in center city. that's the normal high for this time of the year which occurs around 3:00 p.m. 70 in new hold -- holland. glassboro, 72. cinnaminson, 70. tuckahoe, 72. fortescue, 71. it will be warm and humid, 83 degrees that's the forecasted high. we're looking for a combination of sun and clouds. back to the tropics we go, down into the gulf of mexico, this is the latest on hurricane nate. it's a category one storm with the maximum sustained winds up to 85 miles per hour. it has gusts up to 100 miles per hour that would be category 2 strength. right now it is moving to the northwest 22 miles per hour. it's zipping along. it looks like it will make landfall somewhere between new orleans and mobile alabama, overnight tonight.

probably around the midnight hour. it will pull north along the spine of the laimps -- appalachians, and get into the delaware and the lehigh valleys. one it gets into the delaware and the lehigh valleys it's nothing more than a super inflated rainstorm. we're not looking at a tremendous amount of wind, we're looking at beneficial rains in the philadelphia area. i'll be back along in 15 minutes or so, i'll have the exclusive accuweather seven-day forecast and a little bit more on hurricane nate. hurricane nate is moving across the gulf of mexico. it is expected to gain strength before making landfall east of the new orleans this weekend. nate strengthened from a tropical storm to category one hurricane before midnight. louisiana, mississippi, alabama, they have declared states of emergency. in louisiana some residents were told to evacuate. officials told not to

"action news" was on the scene in trent, new jersey, yesterday afternoon. a 58-year-old woman was killed, a 14-year-old girl was hurt in the shooting. investigators have not said if the victims are related or if they were the intended targets. there are some new concerns over mold in schools within the monroe township school district in gloucester county. mold was discovered at the holly

glen elementary school. the building is temporarily closed. now there are concerns in the williams town school balls it was seen on -- because it was seen on ceiling tiles there. people are complaining about their children getting sick. >> i'm fine at home and i come here, my throat is itching, i'm coughing. >> "action news" has learned that the kids at holly glen elementary are being sent to other schools in the area while the problem is being corrected. it is unclear when the school will reopen. china section of philadelphia is celebrating what it is calling an urban renewal milestone. city officials broke ground on the eastern tower community center that will include housing and retail space and the very first community center in chinatown. kind in a town plans --

>> reporter: james jones' daughter was at college 1 hours away in atlanta. like any parent, he wanted to make sure he was there for her. ironically enough, she said dad, you're exactly what they need. >> i'll never forget it, there were big time games i've been a part of, i will never forget the experience. it was not only the bucket list, if i thought about it would be number one. i'm glad i was chosen for the position a year ago, no regrets at all. hopefully he feels as though he made a good decision. >> reporter: more importantly than the game duties are the relationships he has. >> he has a smile on his face and positive attitude. we talk about positively affecting the teammates all the time. whenever he is around you want to hang out with him.
